The Composition Lemma for $n$-dependence
We prove that a relation obtained by composing arbitrary functions of arity $\leq k$ with a relation definable in an $n$-dependent structure is $kn$-dependent. This confirms a conjecture of Chernikov and Hempel. We also demonstrate optimality of the result.
Combinatorics in one-based and related structures
We consider some extremal combinatorial questions for bipartite graphs definable in stable one-based (and related) structures. We show that they satisfy both strong Erdős-Hajnal property and linear Zarankiewicz. We also show that the same is true for both collapsed and uncollapsed Hrushovski's ``ab initio'' constructions, and discuss some connections to Zilber's trichotomy principle. For strong Erdős-Hajnal, we show that in fact it holds in a more general class of $1$-semi-equational theories.
Fractional Helly property and combinatorics of forking in NTP$_2$ theories
We investigate the class of FHP theories, i.e. theories of structures in which all definable families of sets satisfy the Fractional Helly Property (and its variants) from combinatorics. FHP theories generalize NIP and form a new subclass of low NTP$_2$ theories. We give many new examples (including ultraproducts of finite fields and of the $p$-adics) and establish some results about forking and $f$-generics for amenable groups definable in FHP theories. We make several conjectures about finitary combinatorial properties of forking in NTP$_2$ theories and establish some partial results, as well as investigate related two-cardinal type counting functions addressing a question of Adler.
On n-distality, n-triviality and hypergraph regularity in NIP theories
We study Keisler measures in strongly n-distal NIP theories, generalizing some results of Simon and Chernikov-Starchenko for distal theories and addressing some questions of Walker. In particular, we establish a hypergraph version of the distal regularity lemma, compact domination for definable fsg groups, and demonstrate that the strong n-distality hierarchy is strict among stable theories using a connection to Poizat's total triviality of forking. We also show that infinite strongly n-distal NIP fields have characteristic 0 using a discrepancy result of Babai-Hayes-Kimmel from multiparty communication complexity.
Higher-arity PAC learning, VC dimension and packing lemma
The aim of this note is to overview some of our work in Chernikov, Towsner'20 (arXiv:2010.00726) developing higher arity VC theory (VC$_n$ dimension), including a generalization of Haussler packing lemma, and an associated tame (slice-wise) hypergraph regularity lemma; and to demonstrate that it characterizes higher arity PAC learning (PAC$_n$ learning) in $n$-fold product spaces with respect to product measures introduced by Kobayashi, Kuriyama and Takeuchi'15. We also point out how some of the recent results in arXiv:2402.14294, arXiv:2505.15688, arXiv:2509.20404 follow from our work in arXiv:2010.00726.
Averages of hypergraphs and higher arity stability
We show that $k$-ary functions giving the measure of the intersection of multi-parametric families of sets in probability spaces, e.g. $(x,y,z) \in X \times Y \times Z \mapsto μ(P_{x,y} \cap Q_{x,z} \cap R_{y,z})$, satisfy a particularly strong form of hypergraph regularity. More generally, this applies to the (integral) averages of continuous combinations of functions of smaller arity. This result is connected to higher arity stability in model theory, that we discuss in the second part of the paper. We demonstrate that all hypergraphs embedding both into the half-simplex and into $GS(\mathbb{F}_3)$, the two known sources of failure of ternary stability, do satisfy an analogous regularity lemma -- hence strong ternary stability cannot be characterized simply by excluded hypergraphs.
On n-dependent groups and fields III. Multilinear forms and invariant connected components
We develop some model theory of multi-linear forms, generalizing Granger in the bi-linear case. In particular, after proving a quantifier elimination result, we show that for an NIP field K, the theory of infinite dimensional non-degenerate alternating n-linear spaces over K is strictly n-dependent; and it is NSOP1 if K is. This relies on a new Composition Lemma for functions of arbitrary arity and NIP relations (which in turn relies on certain higher arity generalizations of Sauer-Shelah lemma). We also study the invariant connected components $G^{\infty}$ in n-dependent groups, demonstrating their relative absoluteness in the abelian case.
Intersecting sets in probability spaces and Shelah's classification
For $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, given a sufficiently long sequence of events in a probability space all of measure at least $\varepsilon$, some $n$ of them will have a common intersection. A more subtle pattern: for any $0 < p < q < 1$, we cannot find events $A_i$ and $B_i$ so that $μ\left( A_i \cap B_j \right) \leq p$ and $μ\left( A_j \cap B_i\right) \geq q$ for all $1 < i < j < n$, assuming $n$ is sufficiently large. This is closely connected to model-theoretic stability of probability algebras. We survey some results from our recent work on more complicated patterns that arise when our events are indexed by multiple indices. In particular, how such results are connected to higher arity generalizations of de Finetti's theorem in probability, structural Ramsey theory, hypergraph regularity in combinatorics, and model theory.
Perfect stable regularity lemma and slice-wise stable hypergraphs
We investigate various forms of (model-theoretic) stability for hypergraphs and their corresponding strengthenings of the hypergraph regularity lemma with respect to partitions of vertices. On the one hand, we provide a complete classification of the various possibilities in the ternary case. On the other hand, we provide an example of a family of slice-wise stable 3-hypergraphs so that for no partition of the vertices, any triple of parts has density close to 0 or 1. In particular, this addresses some questions and conjectures of Terry and Wolf. We work in the general measure theoretic context of graded probability spaces, so all our results apply both to measures in ultraproducts of finite graphs, leading to the aforementioned combinatorial applications, and to commuting definable Keisler measures, leading to applications in model theory.

We study combinatorial properties of convex sets over arbitrary valued fields. We demonstrate analogs of some classical results for convex sets over the reals (e.g. the fractional Helly theorem and Bárány's theorem on points in many simplices), along with some additional properties not satisfied by convex sets over the reals, including finite breadth and VC-dimension. These results are deduced from a simple combinatorial description of modules over the valuation ring in a spherically complete valued field.

A theorem of Elekes and Szabó recognizes algebraic groups among certain complex algebraic varieties with maximal size intersections with finite grids. We establish a generalization to relations of any arity and dimension, definable in: 1) stable structures with distal expansions (includes algebraically and differentially closed fields of characteristic 0); and 2) o-minimal expansions of groups. Our methods provide explicit bounds on the power saving exponent in the non-group case. Ingredients of the proof include: a higher arity generalization of the abelian group configuration theorem in stable structures, along with a purely combinatorial variant characterizing Latin hypercubes that arise from abelian groups; and Zarankiewicz-style bounds for hypergraphs definable in distal structures.
Hypergraph regularity and higher arity VC-dimension
We generalize the fact that graphs with small VC-dimension can be approximated by rectangles, showing that hypergraphs with small VC_k-dimension (equivalently, omitting a fixed finite (k+1)-partite (k+1)-uniform hypergraph) can be approximated by k-ary cylinder sets.
In the language of hypergraph regularity, this shows that when H is a k'-uniform hypergraph with small VC_k-dimension for some k<k', the decomposition of H given by hypergraph regularity only needs the first k levels---one can approximate H using sets of vertices, sets of pairs, and so on up to sets of k-tuples---and that on most of the resulting k-ary cylinder sets, the density of H is either close to 0 or close to 1.
We also show a suitable converse: k'-uniform hypergraphs with large VC_k-dimension cannot have such approximations uniformly under all measures on the vertices.

A bipartite graph $H = \left(V_1, V_2; E \right)$ with $|V_1| + |V_2| = n$ is semilinear if $V_i \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d_i}$ for some $d_i$ and the edge relation $E$ consists of the pairs of points $(x_1, x_2) \in V_1 \times V_2$ satisfying a fixed Boolean combination of $s$ linear equalities and inequalities in $d_1 + d_2$ variables for some $s$. We show that for a fixed $k$, the number of edges in a $K_{k,k}$-free semilinear $H$ is almost linear in $n$, namely $|E| = O_{s,k,\varepsilon}(n^{1+\varepsilon})$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$; and more generally, $|E| = O_{s,k,r,\varepsilon}(n^{r-1 + \varepsilon})$ for a $K_{k, \ldots,k}$-free semilinear $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph. As an application, we obtain the following incidence bound: given $n_1$ points and $n_2$ open boxes with axis parallel sides in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that their incidence graph is $K_{k,k}$-free, there can be at most $O_{k,\varepsilon}(n^{1+\varepsilon})$ incidences. The same bound holds if instead of boxes one takes polytopes cut out by the translates of an arbitrary fixed finite set of halfspaces. We also obtain matching upper and (superlinear) lower bounds in the case of dyadic boxes on the plane, and point out some connections to the model-theoretic trichotomy in $o$-minimal structures (showing that the failure of an almost linear bound for some definable graph allows one to recover the field operations from that graph in a definable manner).

Mekler's construction gives an interpretation of any structure in a finite relational language in a group (nilpotent of class $2$ and exponent $p>2$, but not finitely generated in general). Even though this construction is not a bi-interpretation, it is known to preserve some model-theoretic tameness properties of the original structure including stability and simplicity. We demonstrate that $k$-dependence of the theory is preserved, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$, and that NTP$_2$ is preserved. We apply this result to obtain first examples of strictly $k$-dependent groups (with no additional structure).

We establish a cutting lemma for definable families of sets in distal structures, as well as the optimality of the distal cell decomposition for definable families of sets on the plane in $o$-minimal expansions of fields. Using it, we generalize the results in [J. Fox, J. Pach, A. Sheffer, A. Suk, and J. Zahl. "A semi-algebraic version of Zarankiewicz's problem"] on the semialgebraic planar Zarankiewicz problem to arbitrary $o$-minimal structures, in particular obtaining an $o$-minimal generalization of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem.

We investigate bounds in Ramsey's theorem for relations definable in NIP structures. Applying model-theoretic methods to finitary combinatorics, we generalize a theorem of Bukh and Matousek [B. Bukh, J. Matoušek. "Erdős-Szekeres-type statements: Ramsey function and decidability in dimension $1$", Duke Mathematical Journal 163.12 (2014): 2243-2270] from the semialgebraic case to arbitrary polynomially bounded $o$-minimal expansions of $\mathbb{R}$, and show that it doesn't hold in $\mathbb{R}_{\exp}$. This provides a new combinatorial characterization of polynomial boundedness for $o$-minimal structures. We also prove an analog for relations definable in $P$-minimal structures, in particular for the field of the $p$-adics. Generalizing [D. Conlon, J. Fox, J. Pach, B. Sudakov, A. Suk "Ramsey-type results for semi-algebraic relations", Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 366.9 (2014): 5043-5065], we show that in distal structures the upper bound for $k$-ary definable relations is given by the exponential tower of height $k-1$.

We present a systematic study of the regularity phenomena for NIP hypergraphs and connections to the theory of (locally) generically stable measures, providing a model-theoretic hypergraph version of the results from [L. Lovász, B. Szegedy, "Regularity partitions and the topology of graphons", An irregular mind, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010, 415-446]. Besides, we revise the two extremal cases of regularity for stable and distal hypergraphs, improving and generalizing the results from [A. Chernikov, S. Starchenko, "Regularity lemma for distal structures", J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 2437-2466] and [M. Malliaris, S. Shelah, "Regularity lemmas for stable graphs", Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 366.3, 2014, 1551-1585]. Finally, we consider a related question of the existence of large (approximately) homogeneous definable subsets of NIP hypergraphs and provide some positive results and counterexamples.
Regularity lemma for distal structures

It is known that families of graphs with a semialgebraic edge relation of bounded complexity satisfy much stronger regularity properties than arbitrary graphs, and that they can be decomposed into very homogeneous semialgebraic pieces up to a small error (e.g., see [33, 2, 16, 18]). We show that similar results can be obtained for families of graphs with the edge relation uniformly definable in a structure satisfying a certain model theoretic property called distality, with respect to a large class of generically stable measures. Moreover, distality characterizes these strong regularity properties. This applies in particular to graphs definable in arbitrary $o$-minimal structures and in $p$-adics.

We study model theoretic tree properties ($\text{TP}, \text{TP}_1, \text{TP}_2$) and their associated cardinal invariants ($κ_{\text{cdt}}, κ_{\text{sct}}, κ_{\text{inp}}$, respectively). In particular, we obtain a quantitative refinement of Shelah's theorem ($\text{TP} \Rightarrow \text{TP}_1 \lor \text{TP}_2$) for countable theories, show that $\text{TP}_1$ is always witnessed by a formula in a single variable (partially answering a question of Shelah) and that weak $k-\text{TP}_1$ is equivalent to $\text{TP}_1$ (answering a question of Kim and Kim). Besides, we give a characterization of $\text{NSOP}_1$ via a version of independent amalgamation of types and apply this criterion to verify that some examples in the literature are indeed $\text{NSOP}_1$.
