We use the Mallows permutation model to construct a new family of stationary finitely dependent proper colorings of the integers. We prove that these colorings can be expressed as finitary factors of i.i.d. processes with finite mean coding radii. They are the first colorings known to have these properties. Moreover, we prove that the coding radii have exponential tails, and that the colorings can also be expressed as functions of countable-state Markov chains. We deduce analogous existence statements concerning shifts of finite type and higher-dimensional colorings.
Deterministic Discrepancy Minimization via the Multiplicative Weight Update Method

A well-known theorem of Spencer shows that any set system with $n$ sets over $n$ elements admits a coloring of discrepancy $O(\sqrt{n})$. While the original proof was non-constructive, recent progress brought polynomial time algorithms by Bansal, Lovett and Meka, and Rothvoss. All those algorithms are randomized, even though Bansal's algorithm admitted a complicated derandomization.
We propose an elegant deterministic polynomial time algorithm that is inspired by Lovett-Meka as well as the Multiplicative Weight Update method. The algorithm iteratively updates a fractional coloring while controlling the exponential weights that are assigned to the set constraints.
A conjecture by Meka suggests that Spencer's bound can be generalized to symmetric matrices. We prove that $n \times n$ matrices that are block diagonal with block size $q$ admit a coloring of discrepancy $O(\sqrt{n} \cdot \sqrt{\log(q)})$.
Bansal, Dadush and Garg recently gave a randomized algorithm to find a vector $x$ with entries in $\lbrace{-1,1\rbrace}$ with $\|Ax\|_{\infty} \leq O(\sqrt{\log n})$ in polynomial time, where $A$ is any matrix whose columns have length at most 1. We show that our method can be used to deterministically obtain such a vector.
Ewens sampling and invariable generation

We study the number of random permutations needed to invariably generate the symmetric group, $S_n$, when the distribution of cycle counts has the strong $α$-logarithmic property. The canonical example is the Ewens sampling formula, for which the number of $k$-cycles relates to a conditioned Poisson random variable with mean $α/k$. The special case $α=1$ corresponds to uniformly random permutations, for which it was recently shown that exactly four are needed. For strong $α$-logarithmic measures, and almost every $α$, we show that precisely $\left\lceil ( 1- α\log 2 )^{-1} \right\rceil$ permutations are needed to invariably generate $S_n$. A corollary is that for many other probability measures on $S_n$ no bounded number of permutations will invariably generate $S_n$ with positive probability. Along the way we generalize classic theorems of Erdős, Tehran, Pyber, Luczak and Bovey to permutations obtained from the Ewens sampling formula.

We propose an algebraic framework for generalized graph Laplacians which unifies the study of resistor networks, the critical group, and the eigenvalues of the Laplacian and adjacency matrices. Given a graph with boundary $G$ together with a generalized Laplacian $L$ with entries in a commutative ring $R$, we define a generalized critical group $Υ_R(G,L)$. We relate $Υ_R(G,L)$ to spaces of harmonic functions on the network using the Hom, Tor, and Ext functors of homological algebra.
We study how these algebraic objects transform under combinatorial operations on the network $(G,L)$, including harmonic morphisms, layer-stripping, duality, and symmetry. In particular, we use layer-stripping operations from the theory of resistor networks to systematize discrete harmonic continuation. This leads to an algebraic characterization of the graphs with boundary that can be completely layer-stripped, an algorithm for simplifying computation of $Υ_R(G,L)$, and upper bounds for the number of invariant factors in the critical group and the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalues in terms of geometric quantities.

Let M(n, d) be the maximum size of a permutation array on n symbols with pairwise Hamming distance at least d. We use various combinatorial, algebraic, and computational methods to improve lower bounds for M(n, d). We compute the Hamming distances of affine semilinear groups and projective semilinear groups, and unions of cosets of AGL(1,q) and PGL(2,q) with Frobenius maps to obtain new, improved lower bounds for M(n,d). We give new randomized algorithms. We give better lower bounds for M(n,d) also using new theorems concerning the contraction operation. For example, we prove a quadratic lower bound for M(n,n-2) for all n=2 (mod 3) such that n+1 is a prime power.
Finitely Dependent Insertion Processes

A $q$-coloring of $\mathbb Z$ is a random process assigning one of $q$ colors to each integer in such a way that consecutive integers receive distinct colors. A process is $k$-dependent if any two sets of integers separated by a distance greater than $k$ receive independent colorings. Holroyd and Liggett constructed the first stationary $k$-dependent $q$-colorings by introducing an insertion algorithm on the complete graph $K_q$. We extend their construction from complete graphs to weighted directed graphs. We show that complete multipartite analogues of $K_3$ and $K_4$ are the only graphs whose insertion process is finitely dependent and whose insertion algorithm is consistent. In particular, there are no other such graphs among all unweighted graphs and among all loopless complete weighted directed graphs. Similar results hold if the consistency condition is weakened to eventual consistency. Finally we show that the directed de Bruijn graphs of shifts of finite type do not yield $k$-dependent insertion processes, assuming eventual consistency.

We briefly present a new construction of a 3-to-1 unrecoverable electrical network. This is a taste of a comprehensive forthcoming paper on unrecoverable electrical networks.
