The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph on $V(G)$ with a pair of vertices $uv$ an edge whenever $u$ and $v$ have distance $1$ or $2$ in $G$. Given graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the minimum $N$ such that whenever the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ are coloured with red and blue, there exists either a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. We prove that for all sufficiently large $n$ we have \[R(P_{3n}^2,P_{3n}^2)=R(P_{3n+1}^2,P_{3n+1}^2)=R(C_{3n}^2,C_{3n}^2)=9n-3\mbox{ and } R(P_{3n+2}^2,P_{3n+2}^2)=9n+1.\] We also show that for any $γ>0$ and $Δ$ there exists $β>0$ such that the following holds. If $G$ can be coloured with three colours such that all colour classes have size at most $n$, the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ of $G$ is at most $Δ$, and $G$ has bandwidth at most $βn$, then $R(G,G)\le (3+γ)n$.

For a graph $G$ and $p\in[0,1]$, we denote by $G_p$ the random sparsification of $G$ obtained by keeping each edge of $G$ independently, with probability $p$. We show that there exists a $C>0$ such that if $p\geq C(\log n)^{1/3}n^{-2/3}$ and $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with $n\in 3\mathbb{N}$ and $δ(G)\geq \tfrac{2n}{3}$, then with high probability $G_p$ contains a triangle factor. Both the minimum degree condition and the probability condition, up to the choice of $C$, are tight. Our result can be viewed as a common strengthening of the seminal theorems of Corrádi and Hajnal, which deals with the extremal minimum degree condition for containing triangle factors (corresponding to $p=1$ in our result), and Johansson, Kahn and Vu, which deals with the threshold for the appearance of a triangle factor in $G(n,p)$ (corresponding to $G=K_n$ in our result). It also implies a lower bound on the number of triangle factors in graphs with minimum degree at least $\tfrac{2n}{3}$ which gets close to the truth.

Given a positive integer $s$, a graph $G$ is $s$-Ramsey for a graph $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_s$, if every $s$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number ${\hat{r}}_s(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be ${\hat{r}}_s(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_s\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $k$ and $s$, we have ${\hat{r}}_s(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$.

Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $q$ say that $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_q$, if every $q$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be $\hat{r}(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_2\}$. Answering a question of Conlon, we prove that, for every fixed $k$, we have $\hat{r}(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$-th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$ (i.e. , the graph with vertex set $V(P_n)$ and all edges $\{u,v\}$ such that the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $P_n$ is at most $k$). Our proof is probabilistic, but can also be made constructive.
Tight bounds on the coefficients of partition functions via stability

Partition functions arise in statistical physics and probability theory as the normalizing constant of Gibbs measures and in combinatorics and graph theory as graph polynomials. For instance the partition functions of the hard-core model and monomer-dimer model are the independence and matching polynomials respectively.
We show how stability results follow naturally from the recently developed occupancy method for maximizing and minimizing physical observables over classes of regular graphs, and then show these stability results can be used to obtain tight extremal bounds on the individual coefficients of the corresponding partition functions.
As applications, we prove new bounds on the number of independent sets and matchings of a given size in regular graphs. For large enough graphs and almost all sizes, the bounds are tight and confirm the Upper Matching Conjecture of Friedland, Krop, and Markström and a conjecture of Kahn on independent sets for a wide range of parameters. Additionally we prove tight bounds on the number of $q$-colorings of cubic graphs with a given number of monochromatic edges, and tight bounds on the number of independent sets of a given size in cubic graphs of girth at least $5$.
Extremes of the internal energy of the Potts model on cubic graphs

We prove tight upper and lower bounds on the internal energy per particle (expected number of monochromatic edges per vertex) in the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on cubic graphs at every temperature and for all $q \ge 2$. This immediately implies corresponding tight bounds on the anti-ferromagnetic Potts partition function.
Taking the zero-temperature limit gives new results in extremal combinatorics: the number of $q$-colorings of a $3$-regular graph, for any $q \ge 2$, is maximized by a union of $K_{3,3}$'s. This proves the $d=3$ case of a conjecture of Galvin and Tetali.
On the average size of independent sets in triangle-free graphs

We prove an asymptotically tight lower bound on the average size of independent sets in a triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $d$, showing that an independent set drawn uniformly at random from such a graph has expected size at least $(1+o_d(1)) \frac{\log d}{d}n$. This gives an alternative proof of Shearer's upper bound on the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$. We then prove that the total number of independent sets in a triangle-free graph with maximum degree $d$ is at least $\exp \left[\left(\frac{1}{2}+o_d(1) \right) \frac{\log^2 d}{d}n \right]$. The constant $1/2$ in the exponent is best possible. In both cases, tightness is exhibited by a random $d$-regular graph.
Both results come from considering the hard-core model from statistical physics: a random independent set $I$ drawn from a graph with probability proportional to $λ^{|I|}$, for a fugacity parameter $λ>0$. We prove a general lower bound on the occupancy fraction (normalized expected size of the random independent set) of the hard-core model on triangle-free graphs of maximum degree $d$. The bound is asymptotically tight in $d$ for all $λ=O_d(1)$.
We conclude by stating several conjectures on the relationship between the average and maximum size of an independent set in a triangle-free graph and give some consequences of these conjectures in Ramsey theory.

We prove new upper bounds on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of paths and even cycles. It is well known that $(k-1)n+o(n)\leq R_k(P_n)\leq R_k(C_n)\leq kn+o(n)$. The upper bound was recently improved by Sárközy who showed that $R_k(C_n)\leq\left(k-\frac{k}{16k^3+1}\right)n+o(n)$. Here we show $R_k(C_n) \leq (k-\frac14)n +o(n)$, obtaining the first improvement to the coefficient of the linear term by an absolute constant.

We determine the Ramsey number of a connected clique matching. That is, we show that if $G$ is a $2$-edge-coloured complete graph on $(r^2 - r - 1)n - r + 1$ vertices, then there is a monochromatic connected subgraph containing $n$ disjoint copies of $K_r$, and that this number of vertices cannot be reduced.

We prove tight upper bounds on the logarithmic derivative of the independence and matching polynomials of d-regular graphs. For independent sets, this theorem is a strengthening of the results of Kahn, Galvin and Tetali, and Zhao showing that a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$ maximizes the number of independent sets and the independence polynomial of a d-regular graph.
For matchings, this shows that the matching polynomial and the total number of matchings of a d-regular graph are maximized by a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$. Using this we prove the asymptotic upper matching conjecture of Friedland, Krop, Lundow, and Markström.
In probabilistic language, our main theorems state that for all d-regular graphs and all $λ$, the occupancy fraction of the hard-core model and the edge occupancy fraction of the monomer-dimer model with fugacity $λ$ are maximized by $K_{d,d}$. Our method involves constrained optimization problems over distributions of random variables and applies to all d-regular graphs directly, without a reduction to the bipartite case.
Triangle-free subgraphs of random graphs

Recently there has been much interest in studying random graph analogues of well known classical results in extremal graph theory. Here we follow this trend and investigate the structure of triangle-free subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with high minimum degree. We prove that asymptotically almost surely each triangle-free spanning subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $\big(\frac{2}{5} + o(1)\big)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to bipartite, and each spanning triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{3}+\varepsilon)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to $r$-partite for some $r=r(\varepsilon)$. These are random graph analogues of a result by Andrásfai, Erdős, and Sós [Discrete Math. 8 (1974), 205-218], and a result by Thomassen [Combinatorica 22 (2002), 591--596]. We also show that our results are best possible up to a constant factor.
Partite Saturation Problems

We look at several saturation problems in complete balanced blow-ups of graphs. We let $H[n]$ denote the blow-up of $H$ onto parts of size $n$ and refer to a copy of $H$ in $H[n]$ as 'partite' if it has one vertex in each part of $H[n]$. We then ask how few edges a subgraph $G$ of $H[n]$ can have such that $G$ has no partite copy of $H$ but such that the addition of any new edge from $H[n]$ creates a partite $H$. When $H$ is a triangle this value was determined by Ferrara, Jacobson, Pfender, and Wenger. Our main result is to calculate this value for $H=K_4$ when $n$ is large. We also give exact results for paths and stars and show that for $2$-connected graphs the answer is linear in $n$ whilst for graphs which are not $2$-connected the answer is quadratic in $n$. We also investigate a similar problem where $G$ is permitted to contain partite copies of $H$ but we require that the addition of any new edge from $H[n]$ creates an extra partite copy of $H$. This problem turns out to be much simpler and we attain exact answers for all cliques and trees.
