On finding hamiltonian cycles in Barnette graphs
Published in Fundamenta Informaticae, Volume 188, Issue 1 (December 15, 2022) fi:10437 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we deal with hamiltonicity in planar cubic graphs G having a facial 2-factor Q via (quasi) spanning trees of faces in G/Q and study the algorithmic complexity of finding such (quasi) spanning trees of faces. Moreover, we show that if Barnette's Conjecture is false, then hamiltonicity in 3-connected planar cubic bipartite graphs is an NP-complete problem.
Perfect Pseudo-Matchings in cubic graphs
A perfect pseudo-matching M in a cubic graph G is a spanning subgraph of G such that every component of M is isomorphic to K_2 or to K_1,3. In view of snarks G with dominating cycle C, this is a natural generalization of perfect matchings since G-E(C) is a perfect pseudo-matching. Of special interest are such M where the graph G/M is planar because such G have a cycle double cover. We show that various well known classes of snarks contain planarizing perfect pseudo-matchings, and that there are at least as many snarks with planarizing perfect pseudo-matchings as there are cyclically 5-edge-connected snarks.
On the algorithmic complexity of finding hamiltonian cycles in special classes of planar cubic graphs
It is a well-known fact that hamiltonicity in planar cubic graphs is an NP-complete problem. This implies that the existence of an A-trail in plane eulerian graphs is also an NP-complete problem even if restricted to planar 3-connected eulerian graphs. In this paper we deal with hamiltonicity in planar cubic graphs G having a facial 2-factor Q via (quasi) spanning trees of faces in G/Q and study the algorithmic complexity of finding such (quasi) spanning trees of faces. We show, in particular, that if Barnette's Conjecture is false, then hamiltonicity in 3-connected planar cubic bipartite graphs is an NP-complete problem.
Hamiltonian cycles in planar cubic graphs with facial 2-factors, and a new partial solution of Barnette's Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the existence of hamiltonian cycles in plane cubic graphs G having a facial 2-factor Q. Thus hamiltonicity in G is transformed into the existence of a (quasi) spanning tree of faces in the contraction G/Q. In particular, we study the case where G is the leapfrog extension (called vertex envelope in (Discrete Math., 309(14):4793-4809, 2009)) of a plane cubic graph G_0. As a consequence we prove hamiltonicity in the leapfrog extension of planar cubic cyclically 4-edge-connected bipartite graphs. This and other results of this paper establish partial solutions of Barnette's Conjecture according to which every 3-connected cubic planar bipartite graph is hamiltonian. These results go considerably beyond Goodey's result on this topic (Israel J. Math., 22:52-56, 1975).

Small oriented cycle double cover of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A small oriented cycle double cover (SOCDC)} of a bridgeless graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is a collection of at most $n-1$ directed cycles of the symmetric orientation, $G_s$, of $G$ such that each edge of $G_s$ lies in exactly one of the cycles. It is conjectured that every 2-connected graph except two complete graphs $K_4$ and $K_6$ has an $\rm SOCDC$. In this paper, we study graphs with $\rm SOCDC$ and obtain some properties of the minimal counterexample to this conjecture.

On the oriented perfect path double cover conjecture
An {\sf oriented perfect path double cover} ($\rm OPPDC$) of a graph $G$ is a collection of directed paths in the symmetric orientation $G_s$ of $G$ such that each edge of $G_s$ lies in exactly one of the paths and each vertex of $G$ appears just once as a beginning and just once as an end of a path. Maxov{á} and Ne{š}et{ř}il (Discrete Math. 276 (2004) 287-294) conjectured that every graph except two complete graphs $K_3$ and $K_5$ has an $\rm OPPDC$ and they proved that the minimum degree of the minimal counterexample to this conjecture is at least four. In this paper, among some other results, we prove that the minimal counterexample to this conjecture is 2-connected and 3-edge-connected.
On the existence of 3-way k-homogeneous Latin trades
A {\sf $μ$-way Latin trade} of volume $s$ is a collection of $μ$ partial Latin squares $T_1,T_2,...,T_μ$, containing exactly the same $s$ filled cells, such that if cell $(i, j)$ is filled, it contains a different entry in each of the $μ$ partial Latin squares, and such that row $i$ in each of the $μ$ partial Latin squares contains, set-wise, the same symbols and column $j$, likewise. %If $μ=2$, $(T_1,T_2)$ is called a {\sf Latin bitrade}. It is called {\sf $μ$-way $k$-homogeneous Latin trade}, if in each row and each column $T_r$, for $1\le r\le μ,$ contains exactly $k$ elements, and each element appears in $T_r$ exactly $k$ times. It is also denoted by $(μ,k,m)$ Latin trade, where $m$ is the size of partial Latin squares. We introduce some general constructions for $μ$-way $k$-homogeneous Latin trades and specifically show that for all $k \le m$, $6\le k \le 13$ and k=15, and for all $k \le m$, $k = 4, \ 5$ (except for four specific values), a 3-way $k$-homogeneous Latin trade of volume $km$ exists. We also show that there are no (3,4,6) Latin trade and (3,4,7) Latin trade. Finally we present general results on the existence of 3-way $k$-homogeneous Latin trades for some modulo classes of $m$.
Relations between Metric Dimension and Domination Number of Graphs
A set $W\subseteq V(G)$ is called a resolving set, if for each two distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ there exists $w\in W$ such that $d(u,w)\neq d(v,w)$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for $G$ is called the metric dimension of $G$, and denoted by $β(G)$. In this paper, we prove that in a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, $β(G)\leq n-γ(G)$, where $γ(G)$ is the domination number of $G$, and the equality holds if and only if $G$ is a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, $ s,t\geq 2$. Then, we obtain new bounds for $β(G)$ in terms of minimum and maximum degree of $G$.

On the existence of k-homogeneous Latin bitrades
Following the earlier work on {homogeneous Latin bitrades by Cavenagh, Donovan, and Dr'apal (2003 and 2004) Bean, Bidkhori, Khosravi, and E. S. Mahmoodian (2005) we prove the following results. All k-homogeneous Latin bitrades of volume km exist, for 1) all odd number k and m is greater than or equal to k, 2) all even number k > 2 and m is greater than or equal to min{k +u,3k/2}, where u is any odd number which divides k, 3) all m is greater than or equal to k, where k is greater than or equal to 3 and is lesser than or equal to 37.
