Polyhedral volume ratios, Izmestiev's Colin de Verdiere matrices and Spectral Gaps
We present a relation between volumes of certain lower dimensional simplices associated to a full-dimensional primal and polar dual polytope in R^k. We then discuss an application of this relation to a geometric construction of a Colin de Verdiere matrix by Ivan Izmestiev. In the second part of the paper, we introduce a variation of vertex transitive polytopes, translate their associated Colin de Verdiere matrices into random walk matrices, and investigate extremality properties of the spectral gaps of these random walk matrices in two concrete examples - permutahedra of Coxeter groups and polytopes associated to the pure rotational tetrahedral group - where maximal spectral gaps correspond to equilateral polytopes.
Cambrian acyclic domains: counting $c$-singletons
We study the size of certain acyclic domains that arise from geometric and combinatorial constructions. These acyclic domains consist of all permutations visited by commuting equivalence classes of maximal reduced decompositions if we consider the symmetric group and, more generally, of all c-singletons of a Cambrian lattice associated to the weak order of a finite Coxeter group. For this reason, we call these sets Cambrian acyclic domains. Extending a closed formula of Galambos--Reiner for a particular acyclic domain called Fishburn's alternating scheme, we provide explicit formulae for the size of any Cambrian acyclic domain and characterize the Cambrian acyclic domains of minimum or maximum size.

We discuss a Cheeger constant as a mixture of the frustration index and the expansion rate, and prove the related Cheeger inequalities and higher order Cheeger inequalities for graph Laplacians with cyclic signatures, discrete magnetic Laplacians on finite graphs and magnetic Laplacians on closed Riemannian manifolds. In this process, we develop spectral clustering algorithms for partially oriented graphs and multi-way spectral clustering algorithms via metrics in lens spaces and complex projective spaces. As a byproduct, we give a unified viewpoint of Harary's structural balance theory of signed graphs and the gauge invariance of magnetic potentials.

An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. Using labeled polygons, C. Hohlweg and C. Lange constructed various realizations of the associahedron with relevant properties related to the symmetric group and the classical permutahedron. We introduce the spine of a triangulation as its dual tree together with a labeling and an orientation. This notion extends the classical understanding of the associahedron via binary trees, introduces a new perspective on C. Hohlweg and C. Lange's construction closer to J.-L. Loday's original approach, and sheds light upon the combinatorial and geometric properties of the resulting realizations of the associahedron. It also leads to noteworthy proofs which shorten and simplify previous approaches.

Realisations of associahedra with linearly non-isomorphic normal fans can be obtained by alteration of the right-hand sides of the facet-defining inequalities from a classical permutahedron. These polytopes can be expressed as Minkowski sums and differences of dilated faces of a standard simplex as described by Ardila, Benedetti & Doker (2010). The coefficients $y_I$ of such a Minkowski decomposition can be computed by Möbius inversion if tight right-hand sides $z_I$ are known not just for the facet-defining inequalities of the associahedron but also for all inequalities of the permutahedron that are redundant for the associahedron.
We show for certain families of these associahedra: (a) how to compute tight values $z_I$ for the redundant inequalities from the values $z_I$ for the facet-defining inequalities; (b) the computation of the values $y_I$ of Ardila, Benedetti & Doker can be significantly simplified and at most four values $z_{a(I)}$, $z_{b(I)}$, $z_{c(I)}$ and $z_{d(I)}$ are needed to compute $y_I$; (c) the four indices $a(I)$, $b(I)$, $c(I)$ and $d(I)$ are determined by the geometry of the normal fan of the associahedron and are described combinatorially; (d) a combinatorial interpretation of the values $y_I$ using a labeled $n$-gon. This last result is inspired from similar interpretations for vertex coordinates originally described originally by J.-L. Loday and well-known interpretations for the $z_I$-values of facet-defining inequalities.

We solve the problem of minimizing the number of critical points among all functions on a surface within a prescribed distance δ from a given input function. The result is achieved by establishing a connection between discrete Morse theory and persistent homology. Our method completely removes homological noise with persistence less than 2δ, constructively proving the tightness of a lower bound on the number of critical points given by the stability theorem of persistent homology in dimension two for any input function. We also show that an optimal solution can be computed in linear time after persistence pairs have been computed.

Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system acting by reflections on an $\mathbb R$-Euclidean space with simple roots $Δ=\{\a_s | s\in S\}$ of the same length and fundamental weights $Δ^*=\{v_s | s\in S\}$. We set $M(e)=\sum_{s\in S}κ_s v_s$, $κ_s>0$, and for $w\in W$ we set $M(w)=w(M(e))$. The permutahedron $Perm(W)$ is the convex hull of the set $\{M(w) | w\in W\}$. Given a Coxeter element $c\in W$, we have defined in a previous work a generalized associahedron $Asso_c(W)$ whose normal fan is the corresponding $c$-Cambrian fan $F_c$ defined by N. Reading. By construction, $Asso_c(W)$ is obtained from $Perm(W)$ by removing some halfspaces according to a rule prescribed by $c$. In this work, we classify the isometry classes of these realizations. More precisely, for $(W,S)$ an irreducible finite Coxeter system and $c,c'$ two Coxeter elements in $W$, we have that $Asso_{c}(W)$ and $Asso_{c'}(W)$ are isometric if and only if $μ(c') = c$ or $μ(c')=w_0c^{-1}w_0$ for $μ$ an automorphism of the Coxeter graph of $W$ such that $κ_s=κ_{μ(s)}$ for all $s\in S$. As a byproduct, we classify the isometric Cambrian fans of $W$.

Given a finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a Coxeter element $c$, we construct a simple polytope whose outer normal fan is N. Reading's Cambrian fan $F_c$, settling a conjecture of Reading that this is possible. We call this polytope the $c$-generalized associahedron. Our approach generalizes Loday's realization of the associahedron (a type $A$ $c$-generalized associahedron whose outer normal fan is not the cluster fan but a coarsening of the Coxeter fan arising from the Tamari lattice) to any finite Coxeter group. A crucial role in the construction is played by the $c$-singleton cones, the cones in the $c$-Cambrian fan which consist of a single maximal cone from the Coxeter fan.
Moreover, if $W$ is a Weyl group and the vertices of the permutahedron are chosen in a lattice associated to $W$, then we show that our realizations have integer coordinates in this lattice.

We describe many different realizations with integer coordinates for the associahedron (i.e. the Stasheff polytope) and for the cyclohedron (i.e. the Bott-Taubes polytope) and compare them to the permutahedron of type A_n and B_n respectively.
The coordinates are obtained by an algorithm which uses an oriented Coxeter graph of type A_n or B_n respectively as only input and which specialises to a procedure presented by J.-L. Loday for a certain orientation of A_n. The described realizations have cambrian fans of type A and B as normal fans. This settles a conjecture of N. Reading for cambrian fans of these types.

In Ziegler (2002), the second author presented a lower bound for the chromatic numbers of hypergraphs $\KG{r}{\pmb s}{\calS}$, "generalized $r$-uniform Kneser hypergraphs with intersection multiplicities $\pmb s$." It generalized previous lower bounds by Kriz (1992/2000) for the case ${\pmb s}=(1,...,1)$ without intersection multiplicities, and by Sarkaria (1990) for $\calS=\tbinom{[n]}k$. Here we discuss subtleties and difficulties that arise for intersection multiplicities $s_i>1$:
1. In the presence of intersection multiplicities, there are two different versions of a "Kneser hypergraph," depending on whether one admits hypergraph edges that are multisets rather than sets. We show that the chromatic numbers are substantially different for the two concepts of hypergraphs. The lower bounds of Sarkaria (1990) and Ziegler (2002) apply only to the multiset version.
2. The reductions to the case of prime $r$ in the proofs Sarkaria and by Ziegler work only if the intersection multiplicities are strictly smaller than the largest prime factor of $r$. Currently we have no valid proof for the lower bound result in the other cases.
We also show that all uniform hypergraphs without multiset edges can be represented as generalized Kneser hypergraphs.
On generalised Kneser colourings
There are two possible definitions of the "s-disjoint r-uniform Kneser hypergraph'' of a set system T: The hyperedges are either r-sets or r-multisets. We point out that Ziegler's (combinatorial) lower bound on the chromatic number of an s-disjoint r-uniform Kneser hypergraph only holds if we consider r-multisets as hyperedges. We give a new proof of his result and show by example that a similar result does not hold if one considers r-sets as hyperedges.
In case of r-sets as hyperedges and $s \geq 2$ the only known lower bounds are obtained from topological invariants of associated simplicial complexes if r is a prime or the power of prime. This is also true for arbitrary r-uniform hypergraphs with r-sets or r-multisets as hyperedges as long as r is a power of a prime.

Lovasz's striking proof of Kneser's conjecture from 1978 using the Borsuk--Ulam theorem provides a lower bound on the chromatic number of a graph. We introduce the shore subdivision of simplicial complexes and use it to show an upper bound to this topological lower bound and to construct a strong Z_2-deformation retraction from the box complex (in the version introduced by Matousek and Ziegler) to the Lovasz complex. In the process, we analyze and clarify the combinatorics of the complexes involved and link their structure via several ``intermediate'' complexes.
