A family of regular integral graphs and its application to the $n$-Queens' graph
A family of regular integral graphs introduced in [I.F.S. Costa, The $n$-Queens graph and its generalizations, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Aveiro 2024], denoted by ${\cal T}(n)$ and herein called triangular graphs, is analysed. In this analysis, the consistent structure of the graph spectra and the patterns of the corresponding eigenvectors are highlighted. The properties of these graphs are examined and applied to the decomposition of the $n$-Queens' graph into three distinct families: a family of a single graph whose components are two triangular graphs, ${\cal T}(n)$ and ${\cal T}(n-1)$, a family of a single graph whose components are cliques and a family of complete bipartite graphs. Finally, using Weyl's inequalities, we introduce some techniques to establish lower and upper bounds on the eigenvalues of the $n$-Queens' graph.
Lexicographic products and lexicographic powers of graphs -- a walk matrix approach
The characteristic polynomial and the spectrum of the lexicographic product of graphs $H[G]$, a specific instance of the generalized composition (also called $H$-join), are explicitly determined for arbitrary graphs $H$ and $G$, in terms of the eigenvalues of $G$ and an $H[G]$ associated matrix $\widetilde{\bf W}$, which relates $H$ with $G$. This study also establishes conditions under which a main eigenvalue of $G$ is a main or non-main eigenvalue of the matrix $\widetilde{\bf W}$, when the nullity of the graph $H$ is $η>0$. In such a case, we prove that every main eigenvalue of $G$ is an eigenvalue of $\widetilde{\bf W}$ with multiplicity at least $η$ which is non-main for $\bf \widetilde{W}$ if and only if $0$ is a non-main eigenvalue of $H$. Furthermore, the spectra of the lexicographic powers of arbitrary graphs $G$ are analysed by applying the obtained results.
Integer eigenvalues of the $n$-Queens graph
The $n$-Queens graph, $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, is the graph obtained from a $n\times n$ chessboard where each of its $n^2$ squares is a vertex and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are in the same row, column or diagonal. In a previous work the authors have shown that, for $n\ge4$, the least eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ is $-4$ and its multiplicity is $(n-3)^2$. In this paper we prove that $n-4$ is also an eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ and its multiplicity is at least $\frac{n+1}{2}$ or $\frac{n-2}{2}$ when $n$ is odd or even, respectively. Furthermore, when $n$ is odd, it is proved that $-3,-2\ldots,\frac{n-11}{2}$ and $\frac{n-5}{2},\ldots,n-5$ are additional integer eigenvalues of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ and a family of eigenvectors associated with them is presented. Finally, conjectures about the multiplicity of the aforementioned eigenvalues and about the non-existence of any other integer eigenvalue are stated.

Sharp bounds on the least eigenvalue of an arbitrary graph are presented. Necessary and sufficient (just sufficient) conditions for the lower (upper) bound to be attained are deduced using edge clique partitions. As an application, we prove that the least eigenvalue of the $n$-Queens' graph $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ is equal to $-4$ for every $n \ge 4$ and it is also proven that the multiplicity of this eigenvalue is $(n-3)^2$. Additionally, some results on the edge clique partition graph parameters are obtained.

A caterpillar graph $T(p_1, \ldots, p_r)$ of order $n= r+\sum_{i=1}^r p_i$, $r\geq 2$, is a tree such that removing all its pendent vertices gives rise to a path of order $r$. In this paper we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a real number to be an eigenvalue of the Randić matrix of $T(p_1, \ldots, p_r)$. This result is applied to determine the extremal caterpillars for the Randić energy of $T(p_1,\ldots, p_r)$ for cases $r=2$ (the double star) and $r=3$. We characterize the extremal caterpillars for $r=2$. Moreover, we study the family of caterpillars $T\big(p,n-p-q-3,q\big)$ of order $n$, where $q$ is a function of $p$, and we characterize the extremal caterpillars for three cases: $q=p$, $q=n-p-b-3$ and $q=b$, for $b\in \{1,\ldots,n-6\}$ fixed. Some illustrative examples are included.

The $H$-join of a family of graphs $\mathcal{G}=\{G_1, \dots, G_p\}$, also called the generalized composition, $H[G_1, \dots, G_p]$, where all graphs are undirected, simple and finite, is the graph obtained by replacing each vertex $i$ of $H$ by $G_i$ and adding to the edges of all graphs in $\mathcal{G}$ the edges of the join $G_i \vee G_j$, for every edge $ij$ of $H$. Some well known graph operations are particular cases of the $H$-join of a family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ as it is the case of the lexicographic product (also called composition) of two graphs $H$ and $G$, $H[G]$. During long time the known expressions for the determination of the entire spectrum of the $H$-join in terms of the spectra of its components and an associated matrix were limited to families of regular graphs. In this work, we extend such a determination, as well as the determination of the characteristic polynomial, to families of arbitrary graphs. From the obtained results, the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of the $H$-join can also be determined in terms of the adjacency matrices of the components and an associated matrix.
The main vertices of a star set and related graph parameters
A vertex $v \in V(G)$ is called $λ$-main if it belongs to a star set $X \subset V(G)$ of the eigenvalue $λ$ of a graph $G$ and this eigenvalue is main for the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting all the vertices in $X \setminus \{v\}$; otherwise, $v$ is $λ$-non-main. Some results concerning main and non-main vertices of an eigenvalue are deduced. For a main eigenvalue $λ$ of a graph $G$, we introduce the minimum and maximum number of $λ$-main vertices in some $λ$-star set of $G$ as new graph invariant parameters. The determination of these parameters is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem based on a simplex-like approach. Using these and some related parameters we develop new spectral tools that can be used in the research of the isomorphism problem. Examples of graphs for which the maximum number of $λ$-main vertices coincides with the cardinality of a $λ$-star set are provided.
Spectral properties of the $n$-Queens' Graphs
The $n$-Queens' graph, $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, is the graph associated to the $n \times n$ chessboard (a generalization of the classical $8 \times 8$ chessboard), with $n^2$ vertices, each one corresponding to a square of the chessboard. Two vertices of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ are adjacent if and only if they are in the same row, in the same column or in the same diagonal of the chessboard. After a short overview on the main combinatorial properties of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, its spectral properties are investigated. First, a lower bound on the least eigenvalue of an arbitrary graph is obtained using clique edge partitions and a sufficient condition for this lower bound be attained is deduced. For the particular case of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, we prove that for every $n$, its least eigenvalue is not less than $-4$ and it is equal to $-4$ with multiplicity $(n-3)^2$, for every $n \ge 4$. Furthermore, $n-4$ is also an eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, with multiplicity at least $\frac{n-2}{2}$ when $n$ is even and at least $\frac{n+1}{2}$ when $n$ is odd. A conjecture about the integer eigenvalues of $\mathcal{Q}(n)$ is presented. We finish this article with an algorithm to determine an equitable partition of the $n$-Queens' graph, $\mathcal{Q}(n)$, for $n \ge 3$, concluding that such equitable partition has $\frac{(\lceil n/2\rceil+1)\lceil n/2\rceil}{2}$ cells.

A ($κ$,$τ$)-regular set is a vertex subset S inducing a $κ$-regular subgraph such that every vertex out of S has $τ$ neighbors in S. This article is an expository overview of the main results obtained for graphs with ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets. The graphs with classical combinatorial structures, like perfect matchings, Hamilton cycles, efficient dominating sets, etc, are characterized by ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets whose determination is equivalent to the determination of those classical combinatorial structures. The characterization of graphs with these combinatorial structures are presented. The determination of ($κ$,$τ$)-regular sets in a finite number of steps is deduced and the main spectral properties of these sets are described.

A graph with convex quadratic stability number is a graph for which the stability number is determined by solving a convex quadratic program. Since the very beginning, where a convex quadratic programming upper bound on the stability number was introduced, a necessary and sufficient condition for this upper bound be attained was deduced. The recognition of graphs with convex quadratic stability number has been deeply studied with several consequences from continuous and combinatorial point of view. This survey starts with an exposition of some extensions of the classical Motzkin-Straus approach to the determination of the stability number of a graph and its relations with the convex quadratic programming upper bound. The main advances, including several properties and alternative characterizations of graphs with convex quadratic stability number are described as well as the algorithmic strategies developed for their recognition. Open problems and a conjecture for a particular class of graphs, herein called adverse graphs, are presented, pointing out a research line which is a challenge between continuous and discrete problems.
Laplacian Distribution and Domination

Let $m_G(I)$ denote the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of a graph $G$ in an interval $I$, and let $γ(G)$ denote its domination number. We extend the recent result $m_G[0,1) \leq γ(G)$, and show that isolate-free graphs also satisfy $γ(G) \leq m_G[2,n]$. In pursuit of better understanding Laplacian eigenvalue distribution, we find applications for these inequalities. We relate these spectral parameters with the approximability of $γ(G)$, showing that $\frac{γ(G)}{m_G[0,1)} \not\in O(\log n)$. However, $γ(G) \leq m_G[2, n] \leq (c + 1) γ(G)$ for $c$-cyclic graphs, $c \geq 1$. For trees $T$, $γ(T) \leq m_T[2, n] \leq 2 γ(G)$.

An eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph is said to be \emph{main} if the all-1 vector is not orthogonal to the associated eigenspace. In this work, we approach the main eigenvalues of some graphs. The graphs with exactly two main eigenvalues are considered and a relation between those main eigenvalues is presented. The particular case of harmonic graphs is analyzed and they are characterized in terms of their main eigenvalues without any restriction on its combinatorial structure. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph $G$ to have $-1-λ_{\min}$ as an eigenvalue of its complement, where $λ_{\min}$ denotes the least eigenvalue of $G$. Also, we prove that among connected bipartite graphs, $K_{r,r}$ is the unique graph for which the index of the complement is equal to $-1-λ_{\min}$. Finally, we characterize all paths and all double stars (trees with diameter three) for which the smallest eigenvalue is non-main. Main eigenvalues of paths and double stars are identified.

Consider two graphs $G$ and $H$. Let $H^k[G]$ be the lexicographic product of $H^k$ and $G$, where $H^k$ is the lexicographic product of the graph $H$ by itself $k$ times. In this paper, we determine the spectrum of $H^k[G]$ and $H^k$ when $G$ and $H$ are regular and the Laplacian spectrum of $H^k[G]$ and $H^k$ for $G$ and $H$ arbitrary. Particular emphasis is given to the least eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix in the case of lexicographic powers of regular graphs, and to the algebraic connectivity and the largest Laplacian eigenvalues in the case of lexicographic powers of arbitrary graphs. This approach allows the determination of the spectrum (in case of regular graphs) and Laplacian spectrum (for arbitrary graphs) of huge graphs. As an example, the spectrum of the lexicographic power of the Petersen graph with the googol number (that is, $10^{100}$) of vertices is determined. The paper finish with the extension of some well known spectral and combinatorial invariant properties of graphs to its lexicographic powers.
Injective Edge Chromatic Index of a Graph
Three edges $e_{1}, e_{2}$ and $e_{3}$ in a graph $G$ are consecutive if they form a path (in this order) or a cycle of length three. An injective edge coloring of a graph $G = (V,E)$ is a coloring $c$ of the edges of $G$ such that if $e_{1}, e_{2}$ and $e_{3}$ are consecutive edges in $G$, then $c(e_{1})\neq c(e_3)$. The injective edge coloring number $χ_{i}^{'}(G)$ is the minimum number of colors permitted in such a coloring. In this paper, exact values of $χ_{i}^{'}(G)$ for several classes of graphs are obtained, upper and lower bounds for $χ_{i}^{'}(G)$ are introduced and it is proven that checking whether $χ_{i}^{'}(G)= k$ is NP-complete.
Spectral results for the dominating induced matching problem
A matching M is a dominating induced matching of a graph, if every edge of the graph is either in $M$ or has a common end-vertex with exactly one edge in $M$. The concept of complete dominating induced matching is introduced as graphs where the vertex set can be partitioned into two subsets, one of them inducing an $1$-regular graph and the other defining an independent set and such that all the remaining edges connect each vertex of one set to each vertex of the other. The principal eigenvectors of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings are characterized and, therefore, the polynomial time recognition of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings is stated. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectrum of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings are characterized. Finally, several upper and lower bounds on the cardinality of a dominating induced matching obtained from the eigenvalues of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices are deduced and examples for which some of these bounds are tight are presented.

Considering a graph $H$ of order $p$, a generalized $H$-join operation of a family of graphs $G_1,..., G_p$, constrained by a family of vertex subsets $S_i \subseteq V(G_i)$, $i=1,..., p,$ is introduced. When each vertex subset $S_i$ is $(k_i,τ_i)$-regular, it is deduced that all non-main adjacency eigenvalues of $G_i$, different from $k_i-τ_i$, for $i=1,..., p,$ remain as eigenvalues of the graph $G$ obtained by the above mentioned operation. Furthermore, if each graph $G_i$ of the family is $k_i$-regular, for $i=1,..., p$, and all the vertex subsets are such that $S_i=V(G_i)$, the $H$-generalized join operation constrained by these vertex subsets coincides with the $H$-generalized join operation. Some applications on the spread of graphs are presented. Namely, new lower and upper bounds are deduced and a infinity family of non regular graphs of order $n$ with spread equals $n$ is introduced.
