A Survey of $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Exploiting the fact that the $q$-Whittaker polynomials arise as a specialization of the (modified) Macdonald polynomials, we derive some of their basic properties, and explore interesting identities that they satisfy. We also show how they arise as graded Frobenius characteristics of $§_n$-modules, and give a combinatorial approach to associated Pieri formulas.
Combinatorics of Labelled Parallelogram polyominoes

We obtain explicit formulas for the enumeration of labelled parallelogram polyominoes. These are the polyominoes that are bounded, above and below, by north-east lattice paths going from the origin to a point (k,n). The numbers from 1 and n (the labels) are bijectively attached to the $n$ north steps of the above-bounding path, with the condition that they appear in increasing values along consecutive north steps. We calculate the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group S_n on these labels. All these enumeration results are refined to take into account the area of these polyominoes. We make a connection between our enumeration results and the theory of operators for which the intergral Macdonald polynomials are joint eigenfunctions. We also explain how these same polyominoes can be used to explicitly construct a linear basis of a ring of SL_2-invariants.

We consider the graded $§_n$-modules of higher diagonally harmonic polynomials in three sets of variables (the trivariate case), and show that they have interesting ties with generalizations of the Tamari poset and parking functions. In particular we get several nice formulas for the associated Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic. This also leads to entirely new combinatorial formulas.

In the context of the ring Q[x,y], of polynomials in 2n variables x=x1,...,x_n and y=y1,...,yn, we introduce the notion of diagonally quasi-symmetric polynomials. These, also called "diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants", make possible the further introduction of the space of "diagonal Temperley-Lieb harmonics" and "diagonal Temperley-Lieb coinvariant space". We present new results and conjectures concerning these spaces, as well as the space obtained as the quotient of the ring of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants by the ideal generated by constant term free diagonally symmetric invariants. We also describe how the space of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants affords a natural graded Hopf algebra structure, for n going to infinity. We finally show how this last space and its graded dual Hopf algebra are related to the well known Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasi-symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.

The aim of this work is to study the quotient ring R_n of the ring Q[x_1,...,x_n] over the ideal J_n generated by non-constant homogeneous quasi-symmetric functions. We prove here that the dimension of R_n is given by C_n, the n-th Catalan number. This is also the dimension of the space SH_n of super-covariant polynomials, that is defined as the orthogonal complement of J_n with respect to a given scalar product. We construct a basis for R_n whose elements are naturally indexed by Dyck paths. This allows us to understand the Hilbert series of SH_n in terms of number of Dyck paths with a given number of factors.

The lattice cell in the ${i+1}^{st}$ row and ${j+1}^{st}$ column of the positive quadrant of the plane is denoted $(i,j)$. If $μ$ is a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the (French) Ferrers diagram of $μ$. We set $Δ_{μ/ij}=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|_{i,j=1}^n$, where $(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)$ are the cells of $μ/ij$, and let ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ be the linear span of the partial derivatives of $Δ_{μ/ij}$. The bihomogeneity of $Δ_{μ/ij}$ and its alternating nature under the diagonal action of $S_n$ gives ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ the structure of a bigraded $S_n$-module. We conjecture that ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ is always a direct sum of $k$ left regular representations of $S_n$, where $k$ is the number of cells that are weakly north and east of $(i,j)$ in $μ$. We also make a number of conjectures describing the precise nature of the bivariate Frobenius characteristic of ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ in terms of the theory of Macdonald polynomials. On the validity of these conjectures, we derive a number of surprising identities. In particular, we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in some Macdonald Pieri Rules.

This work studies the remarkable relationships that hold among certain m-tuples of the Garsia-Haiman modules $ {\bf M}_μ$ and corresponding elements of the Macdonald basis. We recall that ${\bf M}_μ$ is defined for a partition $μ\part n$, as the linear span of derivatives of a certain bihomogeneous polynomial $Δ_ μ(x,y)$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,..., x_n, y_1,y_2,..., y_n$. It has been conjectured by Garsia and Haiman that ${\bf M}_μ$ has $n!$ dimensions and that its bigraded Frobenius characteristic is given by the symmetric polynomial ${\widetilde{H}}_μ(x;q,t)=\sum_{λ\part n} S_λ(X) {\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ where the ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ are related to the Macdonald $q,t$-Kostka coefficients $ K_{λμ}(q,t)$ by the identity ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)=K_{λμ}(q,1/t)t^{n(μ)}$ with $n(μ)$ the x-degree of $Δ_ μ(x;y)$. Computer data has suggested that as $ν$ varies among the immediate predecessors of a partition $μ$, the spaces ${\bf M}_ν$ behave like a boolean lattice. We formulate a number of remarkable conjectures about the Macdonald polynomials. In particular we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation for some of the symmetries that can be found in the computed tables of $q,t$-Kostka coefficients.
