Limits of Stochastic Semigroups and Block-Triangular Majorisation
We investigate limits of semigroups of stochastic matrices defined by their invariant distribution. Given probability vectors $γ(β)$ depending on a parameter $β$, we introduce a notion of convergence as $β\to\infty$ for the corresponding semigroups of $γ(β)$-preserving stochastic matrices and investigate the structure of the resulting limit. In general, the limiting semigroup differs from the semigroup preserving the limiting distribution, showing that these two operations do not commute. We develop a general framework for such limiting semigroups and study in detail the case in which the invariant distributions are Gibbs vectors at the inverse temperature $β$. We show that the limiting semigroup consists of block-upper-triangular stochastic matrices subject to additional substochasticity constraints. We characterise and enumerate their extremal elements and determine the preorder on probability vectors induced by the action of the semigroup. The resulting notion of Block-Triangular majorisation interpolates between ordinary majorisation and upper triangular (aka unordered) majorisation. We show that it is completely characterised by a finite family of monotones and analyse the corresponding behaviour of Rényi $α$-entropies as $β\to\infty$.
Relative volume of comparable pairs under semigroup majorization

Any semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ of stochastic matrices induces a semigroup majorization relation $\prec^{\mathcal{S}}$ on the set $Δ_{n-1}$ of probability $n$-vectors. Pick $X,Y$ at random in $Δ_{n-1}$: what is the probability that $X$ and $Y$ are comparable under $\prec^{\mathcal{S}}$? We review recent asymptotic ($n\to\infty$) results and conjectures in the case of majorization relation (when $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of doubly stochastic matrices), discuss natural generalisations, and prove a new asymptotic result in the case of majorization, and new exact finite-$n$ formulae in the case of UT-majorization relation, i.e. when $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of upper-triangular stochastic matrices.

$λ$-shaped random matrices, $λ$-plane trees, and $λ$-Dyck paths

We consider random matrices whose shape is the dilation $Nλ$ of a self-conjugate Young diagram $λ$. In the large-$N$ limit, the empirical distribution of the squared singular values converges almost surely to a probability distribution $F^λ$. The moments of $F^λ$ enumerate two combinatorial objects: $λ$-plane trees and $λ$-Dyck paths, which we introduce and show to be in bijection. We also prove that the distribution $F^λ$ is algebraic, in the sense of Rao and Edelman. In the case of fat hook shapes we provide explicit formulae for $F^λ$ and we express it as a free convolution of two measures involving a Marchenko-Pastur and a Bernoulli distribution.
Random matrices associated to Young diagrams

We consider the singular values of certain Young diagram shaped random matrices. For block-shaped random matrices, the empirical distribution of the squares of the singular eigenvalues converges almost surely to a distribution whose moments are a generalisation of the Catalan numbers. The limiting distribution is the density of a product of rescaled independent Beta random variables and its Stieltjes-Cauchy transform has a hypergeometric representation. In special cases we recover the Marchenko-Pastur and Dykema-Haagerup measures of square and triangular random matrices, respectively. We find a further factorisation of the moments in terms of two complex-valued random variables that generalises the factorisation of the Marcenko-Pastur law as product of independent uniform and arcsine random variables.
The oriented swap process and last passage percolation

We present new probabilistic and combinatorial identities relating three random processes: the oriented swap process on $n$ particles, the corner growth process, and the last passage percolation model. We prove one of the probabilistic identities, relating a random vector of last passage percolation times to its dual, using the duality between the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth and Burge correspondences. A second probabilistic identity, relating those two vectors to a vector of 'last swap times' in the oriented swap process, is conjectural. We give a computer-assisted proof of this identity for $n\le 6$ after first reformulating it as a purely combinatorial identity, and discuss its relation to the Edelman-Greene correspondence. The conjectural identity provides precise finite-$n$ and asymptotic predictions on the distribution of the absorbing time of the oriented swap process, thus conditionally solving an open problem posed by Angel, Holroyd and Romik.

Integer moments of complex Wishart matrices and Hurwitz numbers

We give formulae for the cumulants of complex Wishart (LUE) and inverse Wishart matrices (inverse LUE). Their large-$N$ expansions are generating functions of double (strictly and weakly) monotone Hurwitz numbers which count constrained factorisations in the symmetric group. The two expansions can be compared and combined with a duality relation proved in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. O'Connell and N. J. Simm, arXiv:1805.08760] to obtain: i) a combinatorial proof of the reflection formula between moments of LUE and inverse LUE at genus zero and, ii) a new functional relation between the generating functions of monotone and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. The main result resolves the integrality conjecture formulated in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. Simm and P. Vivo, J. Phys. A 49 (2016)] on the time-delay cumulants in quantum chaotic transport. The precise combinatorial description of the cumulants given here may cast new light on the concordance between random matrix and semiclassical theories.
