Extension-lifting Bijections for Oriented Matroids
Extending the notion of geometric bijections for regular matroids, introduced by the first and third author with Matthew Baker, we describe a family of bijections between bases of an oriented matroid and special orientations. These bijections are specified by a pair of circuit and cocircuit signatures coming respectively from a generic single-element lifting and extension. We then characterize generic single-element liftings and extensions using these bijections. We also explain the relation of our work with the works of Gioan--Las Vergnas and Ding. Some implications in oriented matroid programming and oriented matroid triangulations are also discussed.
The covering radius and a discrete surface area for non-hollow simplices
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., 67 (2022), 65-111 • View PublicationBIB
We explore upper bounds on the covering radius of non-hollow lattice polytopes. In particular, we conjecture a general upper bound of $d/2$ in dimension $d$, achieved by the "standard terminal simplices" and direct sums of them. We prove this conjecture up to dimension three and show it to be equivalent to the conjecture of González-Merino \& Schymura (2017) that the $d$-th covering minimum of the standard terminal $n$-simplex equals $d/2$, for every $n>d$. We also show that these two conjectures would follow from a discrete analog for lattice simplices of Hadwiger's formula bounding the covering radius of a convex body in terms of the ratio of surface area versus volume. To this end, we introduce a new notion of discrete surface area of non-hollow simplices. We prove our discrete analog in dimension two and we give strong evidence for its validity in arbitrary dimension.
Triangulations and a discrete Brunn-Minkowski inequality in the plane
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 64:2 (2020), 396-426 • View PublicationBIB
For a set $A$ of points in the plane, not all collinear, we denote by ${\rm tr}(A)$ the number of triangles in any triangulation of $A$; that is, ${\rm tr}(A) = 2i+b-2$ where $b$ and $i$ are the numbers of points of $A$ in the boundary and the interior of $[A]$ (we use $[A]$ to denote "convex hull of $A$"). We conjecture the following analogue of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality: for any two point sets $A,B \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ one has \[ {\rm tr}(A+B)^{\frac12}\geq {\rm tr}(A)^{\frac12}+{\rm tr}(B)^{\frac12}. \] We prove this conjecture in several cases: if $[A]=[B]$, if $B=A\cup\{b\}$, if $|B|=3$, or if none of $A$ or $B$ has interior points.

Hollow polytopes of large width
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 148(2) (2020), 835-850 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a hollow lattice polytope (resp. a hollow lattice simplex) of dimension $14$ (resp.$~404$) and of width $15$ (resp.$~408$). They are the first known hollow lattice polytopes of width larger than dimension. We also construct a hollow (non-lattice) tetrahedron of width $2+\sqrt2$ and conjecture that this is the maximum width among $3$-dimensional hollow convex bodies. We show that the maximum lattice width grows (at least) additively with $d$. In particular, the constructions above imply the existence of hollow lattice polytopes (resp. hollow simplices) of arbitrarily large dimension $d$ and width $\simeq 1.14 d$ (resp.$~\simeq 1.01 d$).
Average Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes in triangulations of manifolds
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27:3 (2020), P3.40 • View PublicationBIB
We study a variation of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$-vector of a simplicial complex $C$, whose entries are defined as weighted averages of Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes of $C$. We show that these invariants satisfy an Alexander-Dehn-Sommerville type identity, and behave nicely under natural operations on triangulated manifolds and spheres such as connected sums and bistellar flips. In the language of commutative algebra, the invariants are weighted sums of graded Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $C$. This interpretation implies, by a result of Adiprasito, that the Billera-Lee sphere maximizes these invariants among triangulated spheres with a given $f$-vector. For the first entry of $σ$, we extend this bound to the class of strongly connected pure complexes. As an application, we show how upper bounds on $σ$ can be used to obtain lower bounds on the $f$-vector of triangulated $4$-manifolds with transitive symmetry on vertices and prescribed vector of Betti numbers.

Ehrhart-equivalent $\boldsymbol 3$-polytopes are equidecomposable
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 147 (2019), 5373-5383 • View PublicationBIB
We show that if two lattice $3$-polytopes $P$ and $P'$ have the same Ehrhart function then they are $\operatorname{GL}_3({\mathbb Z})$-equidecomposable; that is, they can be partitioned into relatively open simplices $U_1,\dots, U_k$ and $U'_1,\dots,U'_k$ such that $U_i$ and $U'_i$ are unimodularly equivalent, for each $i$.

Topological Prismatoids and Small Simplicial Spheres of Large Diameter
Published in Experimental Mathematics, 31:2 (2022), 461-473 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce topological prismatoids, a combinatorial abstraction of the (geometric) prismatoids recently introduced by the second author to construct counter-examples to the Hirsch conjecture. We show that the `strong $d$-step Theorem' that allows to construct such large-diameter polytopes from `non-$d$-step' prismatoids still works at this combinatorial level. Then, using metaheuristic methods on the flip graph, we construct four combinatorially different non-$d$-step $4$-dimensional topological prismatoids with $14$ vertices. This implies the existence of $8$-dimensional spheres with $18$ vertices whose combinatorial diameter exceeds the Hirsch bound. These examples are smaller that the previously known examples by Mani and Walkup in 1980 ($24$ vertices, dimension $11$). Our non-Hirsch spheres are shellable but we do not know whether they are realizable as polytopes.
A Polyhedral Method for Sparse Systems with many Positive Solutions
Published in SIAM J. Appl. Algebra Geometry, 2(4) (2018), 620-645 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a version of Viro's method for constructing polynomial systems with many positive solutions, based on regular triangulations of the Newton polytope of the system. The number of positive solutions obtained with our method is governed by the size of the largest positively decorable subcomplex of the triangulation. Here, positive decorability is a property that we introduce and which is dual to being a subcomplex of some regular triangulation. Using this duality, we produce large positively decorable subcomplexes of the boundary complexes of cyclic polytopes. As a byproduct we get new lower bounds, some of them being the best currently known, for the maximal number of positive solutions of polynomial systems with prescribed numbers of monomials and variables. We also study the asymptotics of these numbers and observe a log-concavity property.

Short proof of two cases of Chvátal's conjecture
Published in Discrete Mathematics 342 (2019) 2192-2194 • View PublicationBIB
In 1974 Chvátal conjectured that no intersecting family $\mathcal{F}$ in a downset can be larger than the largest star. In the same year Kleitman and Magnanti proved the conjecture when $\mathcal{F}$ is contained in the union of two stars, and Sterboul when $\operatorname{rank}(\mathcal{F})\le 3$. We give short self-contained proofs of these two statements.

Non-spanning lattice 3-polytopes
Published in J. Combin. Th., Ser. A. 161 (January 2019), 112-133 • View PublicationBIB
We completely classify non-spanning $3$-polytopes, by which we mean lattice $3$-polytopes whose lattice points do not affinely span the lattice. We show that, except for six small polytopes (all having between five and eight lattice points), every non-spanning $3$-polytope $P$ has the following simple description: $P\cap \mathbb{Z}^3$ consists of either (1) two lattice segments lying in parallel and consecutive lattice planes or (2) a lattice segment together with three or four extra lattice points placed in a very specific manner. From this description we conclude that all the empty tetrahedra in a non-spanning $3$-polytope $P$ have the same volume and they form a triangulation of $P$, and we compute the $h^*$-vectors of all non-spanning $3$-polytopes. We also show that all spanning $3$-polytopes contain a unimodular tetrahedron, except for two particular $3$-polytopes with five lattice points.

For any lattice congruence of the weak order on $\mathfrak{S}_n$, N. Reading proved that glueing together the cones of the braid fan that belong to the same congruence class defines a complete fan. We prove that this fan is the normal fan of a polytope.
The EKR property for flag pure simplicial complexes without boundary
Published in J. Combin. Th., Ser. A. 172 (May 2020), 105205 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the family of facets of a pure simplicial complex of dimension up to three satisfies the Erdős-Ko-Rado property whenever it is flag and has no boundary ridges. We conjecture the same to be true in arbitrary dimension and give evidence for this conjecture. Our motivation is that complexes with these two properties include flag pseudo-manifolds and cluster complexes.

Classification of empty lattice $4$-simplices of width larger than two
Published in Transactions Amer. Math. Soc., 371:9 (May 2019), 6605-6625 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice $d$-simplex is the convex hull of $d+1$ affinely independent integer points in ${\mathbb R}^d$. It is called empty if it contains no lattice point apart of its $d+1$ vertices. The classification of empty $3$-simplices is known since 1964 (White), based on the fact that they all have width one. But for dimension $4$ no complete classification is known. Haase and Ziegler (2000) enumerated all empty $4$-simplices up to determinant 1000 and based on their results conjectured that after determinant $179$ all empty $4$-simplices have width one or two. We prove this conjecture as follows: - We show that no empty $4$-simplex of width three or more can have determinant greater than 5058, by combining the recent classification of hollow 3-polytopes (Averkov, Krümpelmann and Weltge, 2017) with general methods from the geometry of numbers. - We continue the computations of Haase and Ziegler up to determinant 7600, and find that no new $4$-simplices of width larger than two arise. In particular, we give the whole list of empty $4$-simplices of width larger than two, which is as computed by Haase and Ziegler: There is a single empty $4$-simplex of width four (of determinant 101), and 178 empty $4$-simplices of width three, with determinants ranging from 41 to 179.
The Finiteness Threshold Width of Lattice Polytopes
Published in Transactions of the Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 8 (April 2021), 399-419 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that in each dimension $d$ there is a constant $w^\infty(d)\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ all but finitely many $d$-polytopes with $n$ lattice points have width at most $w^\infty(d)$. We call $w^\infty(d)$ the finiteness threshold width and show that $d-2 \le w^\infty(d)\le O^*\left( d^{4/3}\right)$. Blanco and Santos determined the value $w^\infty(3)=1$. Here, we establish $w^\infty(4)=2$. This implies, in particular, that there are only finitely many empty $4$-simplices of width larger than two. The main tool in our proofs is the study of $d$-dimensional lifts of hollow $(d-1)$-polytopes.

The maximum diameter of pure simplicial complexes and pseudo-manifolds
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., 58:3 (October 2017), 643-649 • View PublicationBIB
We construct $d$-dimensional pure simplicial complexes and pseudo-manifolds (without boundary) with $n$ vertices whose combinatorial diameter grows as $c_d n^{d-1}$ for a constant $c_d$ depending only on $d$, which is the maximum possible growth. Moreover, the constant $c_d$ is optimal modulo a singly exponential factor in $d$. The pure simplicial complexes improve on a construction of the second author that achieved $c_d n^{2d/3}$. For pseudo-manifolds without boundary, as far as we know, no construction with diameter greater than $n^2$ was previously known.

Enumeration of lattice 3-polytopes by their number of lattice points
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 60:3 (2018), 756-800 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a procedure for the complete computational enumeration of lattice $3$-polytopes of width larger than one, up to any given number of lattice points. We also implement an algorithm for doing this and enumerate those with at most eleven lattice points (there are 216,453 of them). In order to achieve this we prove that if $P$ is a lattice 3-polytope of width larger than one and with at least seven lattice points then it fits in one of three categories that we call boxed, spiked and merged. Boxed polytopes have at most 11 lattice points; in particular they are finitely many, and we enumerate them completely with computer help. Spiked polytopes are infinitely many but admit a quite precise description (and enumeration). Merged polytopes are computed as a union (merging) of two polytopes of width larger than one and strictly smaller number of lattice points.
Hirsch polytopes with exponentially long combinatorial segments
Published in Mathematical Programming, Volume 165, Issue 2 (2017), pp 663-688 • View PublicationBIB
In their paper proving the Hirsch bound for flag normal simplicial complexes (Math. Oper.~Res.~2014) Adiprasito and Benedetti define the notion of~\emph{combinatorial segment}. The study of the maximal length of these objects provides the upper bound~$O(n2^d)$ for the diameter of any normal pure simplicial complex of dimension~$d$ with~$n$ vertices, and the Hirsch bound $n-d$ if the complexes are, moreover, flag. In the present article, we propose a formulation of combinatorial segments which is equivalent but more local, by introducing the notions of monotonicity and conservativeness of dual paths in pure simplicial complexes. We use this definition to investigate further properties of combinatorial segments. Besides recovering the two stated bounds, we show a refined bound for banner complexes, and study the behavior of the maximal length of combinatorial segments with respect to two usual operations, namely join and one-point suspension. Finally, we show the limitations of combinatorial segments by constructing pure normal simplicial complexes in which all combinatorial segments between two particular facets achieve the length $Ω(n2^{d})$. This includes vertex-decomposable---therefore Hirsch---polytopes.

Lattice 3-polytopes with six lattice points
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30(2) (2016) , 687-717 • View PublicationBIB
We classify lattice $3$-polytopes of width larger than one and with exactly $6$ lattice points. We show that there are $74$ polytopes of width $2$, two polytopes of width $3$, and none of larger width. We give explicit coordinates for representatives of each class, together with other invariants such as their oriented matroid (or order type) and volume vector. For example, according to the number of interior points these $76$ polytopes divide into $23$ tetrahedra with two interior points (clean tetrahedra), $49$ polytopes with one interior point (the $49$ canonical three-polytopes with five boundary points previously classified by Kasprzyk) and only $4$ hollow polytopes. We also give a complete classification of three-polytopes of width one with $6$ lattice points. In terms of the oriented matroid of these six points, they lie in eight infinite classes and twelve individual polytopes. Our motivation comes partly from the concept of distinct pair sum (or dps) polytopes, which, in dimension $3$, can have at most $8$ lattice points. Among the $74+2$ classes mentioned above, exactly $44 + 1$ are dps.

Lattice 3-polytopes with few lattice points
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30(2) (2016), 669-686 • View PublicationBIB
We extend White's classification of empty tetrahedra to the complete classification of lattice $3$-polytopes with five lattice points, showing that, apart from infinitely many of width one, there are exactly nine equivalence classes of them with width two and none of larger width. We also prove that, for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, there is only a finite number of (classes of) lattice $3$-polytopes with $n$ lattice points and of width larger than one. This implies that extending the present classification to larger sizes makes sense, which is the topic of subsequent papers of ours.

Many triangulated odd-spheres
Published in Math. Annalen 364:3 (2016), 737-762 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the $(2k-1)$-sphere has at most $2^{O(n^k \log n)}$ combinatorially distinct triangulations with $n$ vertices, for every $k\ge 2$. Here we construct at least $2^{Ω(n^k)}$ such triangulations, improving on the previous constructions which gave $2^{Ω(n^{k-1})}$ in the general case (Kalai) and $2^{Ω(n^{5/4})}$ for $k=2$ (Pfeifle-Ziegler). We also construct $2^{Ω\left(n^{k-1+\frac{1}{k}}\right)}$ geodesic (a.k.a. star-convex) $n$-vertex triangualtions of the $(2k-1)$-sphere. As a step for this (in the case $k=2$) we construct $n$-vertex $4$-polytopes containing $Ω(n^{3/2})$ facets that are not simplices, or with $Ω(n^{3/2})$ edges of degree three.
