A note on super Catalan numbers
Published in Interdisciplinary Information Sciences Vol. 18, No. 1 (2012) 23-24 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the super Catalan numbers are special values of the Krawtchouk polynomials by deriving an expression for the super Catalan numbers in terms of a signed set.

The Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for twisted Grassmann graphs
Published in Combinatorica 32 (2012) 735-740 • View PublicationBIB
We present a "modern" approach to the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs and apply it to the twisted Grassmann graphs discovered in 2005 by van Dam and Koolen.

Vertex subsets with minimal width and dual width in $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2011) #P167 • View PublicationBIB
We study $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs from the point of view of what we call descendents, that is to say, those vertex subsets with the property that the width $w$ and dual width $w^*$ satisfy $w+w^*=d$, where $d$ is the diameter of the graph. We show among other results that a nontrivial descendent with $w\ge 2$ is convex precisely when the graph has classical parameters. The classification of descendents has been done for the 5 classical families of graphs associated with short regular semilattices. We revisit and characterize these families in terms of posets consisting of descendents, and extend the classification to all of the 15 known infinite families with classical parameters and with unbounded diameter.

Nonexistence of exceptional imprimitive Q-polynomial association schemes with six classes
Published in European J. Combin. 32 (2011) 155-161 • View PublicationBIB
Suzuki (1998) showed that an imprimitive Q-polynomial association scheme with first multiplicity at least three is either Q-bipartite, Q-antipodal, or with four or six classes. The exceptional case with four classes has recently been ruled out by Cerzo and Suzuki (2009). In this paper, we show the nonexistence of the last case with six classes. Hence Suzuki's theorem now exactly mirrors its well-known counterpart for imprimitive distance-regular graphs.

Commutative association schemes
Published in European J. Combin. 30 (2009) 1497-1525 • View PublicationBIB
Association schemes were originally introduced by Bose and his co-workers in the design of statistical experiments. Since that point of inception, the concept has proved useful in the study of group actions, in algebraic graph theory, in algebraic coding theory, and in areas as far afield as knot theory and numerical integration. This branch of the theory, viewed in this collection of surveys as the "commutative case," has seen significant activity in the last few decades. The goal of the present survey is to discuss the most important new developments in several directions, including Gelfand pairs, cometric association schemes, Delsarte Theory, spin models and the semidefinite programming technique. The narrative follows a thread through this list of topics, this being the contrast between combinatorial symmetry and group-theoretic symmetry, culminating in Schrijver's SDP bound for binary codes (based on group actions) and its connection to the Terwilliger algebra (based on combinatorial symmetry). We propose this new role of the Terwilliger algebra in Delsarte Theory as a central topic for future work.

Group-case commutative association schemes and their character tables
Leading towards the classification of primitive commutative association schemes as the ultimate goal, Bannai and some of his school have been trying to * identify the major sources of (primitive) commutative association schemes, * collect known group-case primitive commutative association schemes, and * compute their character tables over the last twenty years. The construction of their character tables are important first step for a systematic study of such association schemes and towards the classification of those schemes. In this talk, we briefly survey the progress made in this direction of research, and list some open problems.

New proofs of the Assmus-Mattson theorem based on the Terwilliger algebra
Published in European J. Combin. 30 (2009) 736-746 • View PublicationBIB
We use the Terwilliger algebra to provide a new approach to the Assmus-Mattson theorem. This approach also includes another proof of the minimum distance bound shown by Martin as well as its dual.
