Erdos-Hajnal-type theorems in hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture states that if a graph on n vertices is H-free, that is, it does not contain an induced copy of a given graph H, then it must contain either a clique or an independent set of size n^{d(H)}, where d(H) > 0 depends only on the graph H. Except for a few special cases, this conjecture remains wide open. However, it is known that a H-free graph must contain a complete or empty bipartite graph with parts of polynomial size. We prove an analogue of this result for 3-uniform hypergraphs, showing that if a 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices is H-free, for any given H, then it must contain a complete or empty tripartite subgraph with parts of order c(log n)^{1/2 + d(H)}, where d(H) > 0 depends only on H. This improves on the bound of c(log n)^{1/2}, which holds in all 3-uniform hypergraphs, and, up to the value of the constant d(H), is best possible. We also prove that, for k > 3, no analogue of the standard Erdos-Hajnal conjecture can hold in k-uniform hypergraphs. That is, there are k-uniform hypergraphs H and sequences of H-free hypergraphs which do not contain cliques or independent sets of size appreciably larger than one would normally expect.
Minimum degree condition forcing complete graph immersion
Published • View PublicationBIB
An immersion of a graph $H$ into a graph $G$ is a one-to-one mapping $f:V(H) \to V(G)$ and a collection of edge-disjoint paths in $G$, one for each edge of $H$, such that the path $P_{uv}$ corresponding to edge $uv$ has endpoints $f(u)$ and $f(v)$. The immersion is strong if the paths $P_{uv}$ are internally disjoint from $f(V(H))$. It is proved that for every positive integer $t$, every simple graph of minimum degree at least $200t$ contains a strong immersion of the complete graph $K_t$. For dense graphs one can say even more. If the graph has order $n$ and has $2cn^2$ edges, then there is a strong immersion of the complete graph on at least $c^2 n$ vertices in $G$ in which each path $P_{uv}$ is of length 2. As an application of these results, we resolve a problem raised by Paul Seymour by proving that the line graph of every simple graph with average degree $d$ has a clique minor of order at least $cd^{3/2}$, where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. For small values of $t$, $1\le t\le 7$, every simple graph of minimum degree at least $t-1$ contains an immersion of $K_t$ (Lescure and Meyniel, DeVos et al.). We provide a general class of examples showing that this does not hold when $t$ is large.

Maximum union-free subfamilies
Published • View PublicationBIB
An old problem of Moser asks: how large of a union-free subfamily does every family of m sets have? A family of sets is called union-free if there are no three distinct sets in the family such that the union of two of the sets is equal to the third set. We show that every family of m sets contains a union-free subfamily of size at least \lfloor \sqrt{4m+1}\rfloor - 1 and that this bound is tight. This solves Moser's problem and proves a conjecture of Erdős and Shelah from 1972. More generally, a family of sets is a-union-free if there are no a+1 distinct sets in the family such that one of them is equal to the union of a others. We determine up to an absolute multiplicative constant factor the size of the largest guaranteed a-union-free subfamily of a family of m sets. Our result verifies in a strong form a conjecture of Barat, Füredi, Kantor, Kim and Patkos.

On minimal colorings without monochromatic solutions to a linear equation

For a ring R and system L of linear homogeneous equations, we call a coloring of the nonzero elements of R minimal for L if there are no monochromatic solutions to L and the coloring uses as few colors as possible. For a rational number q and positive integer n, let E(q,n) denote the equation $\sum_{i=0}^{n-2} q^{i}x_i = q^{n-1}x_{n-1}$. We classify the minimal colorings of the nonzero rational numbers for each of the equations E(q,3) with q in {3/2,2,3,4}, for E(2,n) with n in {3,4,5,6}, and for x_1+x_2+x_3=4x_4. These results lead to several open problems and conjectures on minimal colorings.
Crossings, colorings, and cliques

Albertson conjectured that if graph $G$ has chromatic number $r$, then the crossing number of $G$ is at least that of the complete graph $K_r$. This conjecture in the case $r=5$ is equivalent to the four color theorem. It was verified for $r=6$ by Oporowski and Zhao. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for $7 \leq r \leq 12$ using results of Dirac; Gallai; and Kostochka and Stiebitz that give lower bounds on the number of edges in critical graphs, together with lower bounds by Pach et.al. on the crossing number of graphs in terms of the number of edges and vertices.

A new proof of the graph removal lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let H be a fixed graph with h vertices. The graph removal lemma states that every graph on n vertices with o(n^h) copies of H can be made H-free by removing o(n^2) edges. We give a new proof which avoids Szemerédi's regularity lemma and gives a better bound. This approach also works to give improved bounds for the directed and multicolored analogues of the graph removal lemma. This answers questions of Alon and Gowers.
Overlap properties of geometric expanders

The {\em overlap number} of a finite $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is defined as the largest constant $c(H)\in (0,1]$ such that no matter how we map the vertices of $H$ into $\R^d$, there is a point covered by at least a $c(H)$-fraction of the simplices induced by the images of its hyperedges. In~\cite{Gro2}, motivated by the search for an analogue of the notion of graph expansion for higher dimensional simplicial complexes, it was asked whether or not there exists a sequence $\{H_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ of arbitrarily large $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraphs with bounded degree, for which $\inf_{n\ge 1} c(H_n)>0$. Using both random methods and explicit constructions, we answer this question positively by constructing infinite families of $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraphs with bounded degree such that their overlap numbers are bounded from below by a positive constant $c=c(d)$. We also show that, for every $d$, the best value of the constant $c=c(d)$ that can be achieved by such a construction is asymptotically equal to the limit of the overlap numbers of the complete $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraphs with $n$ vertices, as $n\rightarrow\infty$. For the proof of the latter statement, we establish the following geometric partitioning result of independent interest. For any $d$ and any $ε>0$, there exists $K=K(ε,d)\ge d+1$ satisfying the following condition. For any $k\ge K$, for any point $q \in \mathbb{R}^d$ and for any finite Borel measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with respect to which every hyperplane has measure $0$, there is a partition $\mathbb{R}^d=A_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_{k}$ into $k$ measurable parts of equal measure such that all but at most an $ε$-fraction of the $(d+1)$-tuples $A_{i_1},\ldots,A_{i_{d+1}}$ have the property that either all simplices with one vertex in each $A_{i_j}$ contain $q$ or none of these simplices contain $q$.

An approximate version of Sidorenko's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A beautiful conjecture of Erdős-Simonovits and Sidorenko states that if H is a bipartite graph, then the random graph with edge density p has in expectation asymptotically the minimum number of copies of H over all graphs of the same order and edge density. This conjecture also has an equivalent analytic form and has connections to a broad range of topics, such as matrix theory, Markov chains, graph limits, and quasirandomness. Here we prove the conjecture if H has a vertex complete to the other part, and deduce an approximate version of the conjecture for all H. Furthermore, for a large class of bipartite graphs, we prove a stronger stability result which answers a question of Chung, Graham, and Wilson on quasirandomness for these graphs.

On two problems in graph Ramsey theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study two classical problems in graph Ramsey theory, that of determining the Ramsey number of bounded-degree graphs and that of estimating the induced Ramsey number for a graph with a given number of vertices. The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of H. A famous result of Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter states that there exists a constant c(Δ) such that r(H) \leq c(Δ) n for every graph H with n vertices and maximum degree Δ. The important open question is to determine the constant c(Δ). The best results, both due to Graham, Rödl and Ruciński, state that there are constants c and c' such that 2^{c' Δ} \leq c(Δ) \leq 2^{c Δ\log^2 Δ}. We improve this upper bound, showing that there is a constant c for which c(Δ) \leq 2^{c Δ\log Δ}. The induced Ramsey number r_{ind}(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N for which there exists a graph G on N vertices such that every two-coloring of the edges of G contains an induced monochromatic copy of H. Erdős conjectured the existence of a constant c such that, for any graph H on n vertices, r_{ind}(H) \leq 2^{c n}. We move a step closer to proving this conjecture, showing that r_{ind} (H) \leq 2^{c n \log n}. This improves upon an earlier result of Kohayakawa, Prömel and Rödl by a factor of \log n in the exponent.

Dependent Random Choice

We describe a simple and yet surprisingly powerful probabilistic technique which shows how to find in a dense graph a large subset of vertices in which all (or almost all) small subsets have many common neighbors. Recently this technique has had several striking applications to Extremal Graph Theory, Ramsey Theory, Additive Combinatorics, and Combinatorial Geometry. In this survey we discuss some of them.

An improved bound for the stepping-up lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition relation N \to (n)_{\ell}^k means that whenever the k-tuples of an N-element set are \ell-colored, there is a monochromatic set of size n, where a set is called monochromatic if all its k-tuples have the same color. The logical negation of N \to (n)_{\ell}^k is written as N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k. An ingenious construction of Erdős and Hajnal known as the stepping-up lemma gives a negative partition relation for higher uniformity from one of lower uniformity, effectively gaining an exponential in each application. Namely, if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 3, and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (2n+k-4)_{\ell}^{k+1}. In this note we give an improved construction for k \geq 4. We introduce a general class of colorings which extends the framework of Erdős and Hajnal and can be used to establish negative partition relations. We show that if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 4 and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (n+3)_{\ell}^{k+1}. If also k is odd or \ell \geq 3, then we get the better bound 2^N \not \to (n+2)_{\ell}^{k+1}. This improved bound gives a coloring of the k-tuples whose largest monochromatic set is a factor Ω(2^{k}) smaller than given by the original version of the stepping-up lemma. We give several applications of our result to lower bounds on hypergraph Ramsey numbers. In particular, for fixed \ell \geq 4 we determine up to an absolute constant factor (which is independent of k) the size of the largest guaranteed monochromatic set in an \ell-coloring of the k-tuples of an N-set.

Decompositions into subgraphs of small diameter
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate decompositions of a graph into a small number of low diameter subgraphs. Let P(n,ε,d) be the smallest k such that every graph G=(V,E) on n vertices has an edge partition E=E_0 \cup E_1 \cup ... \cup E_k such that |E_0| \leq εn^2 and for all 1 \leq i \leq k the diameter of the subgraph spanned by E_i is at most d. Using Szemerédi's regularity lemma, Polcyn and Ruciński showed that P(n,ε,4) is bounded above by a constant depending only ε. This shows that every dense graph can be partitioned into a small number of ``small worlds'' provided that few edges can be ignored. Improving on their result, we determine P(n,ε,d) within an absolute constant factor, showing that P(n,ε,2) = Θ(n) is unbounded for ε< 1/4, P(n,ε,3) = Θ(1/ε^2) for ε> n^{-1/2} and P(n,ε,4) = Θ(1/ε) for ε> n^{-1}. We also prove that if G has large minimum degree, all the edges of G can be covered by a small number of low diameter subgraphs. Finally, we extend some of these results to hypergraphs, improving earlier work of Polcyn, Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi.

Paths and stability number in digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Gallai-Milgram theorem says that the vertex set of any digraph with stability number k can be partitioned into k directed paths. In 1990, Hahn and Jackson conjectured that this theorem is best possible in the following strong sense. For each positive integer k, there is a digraph D with stability number k such that deleting the vertices of any k-1 directed paths in D leaves a digraph with stability number k. In this note, we prove this conjecture.

Large almost monochromatic subsets in hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for all $\ell$ and $ε>0$ there is a constant $c=c(\ell,ε)>0$ such that every $\ell$-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set contains a subset $S$ of size $c\sqrt{\log N}$ such that at least $1-ε$ fraction of the triples of $S$ have the same color. This result is tight up to the constant $c$ and answers an open question of Erdős and Hajnal from 1989 on discrepancy in hypergraphs. For $\ell \geq 4$ colors, it is known that there is an $\ell$-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set whose largest monochromatic subset has cardinality only $Θ(\log \log N)$. Thus, our result demonstrates that the maximum almost monochromatic subset that an $\ell$-coloring of the triples must contain is much larger than the corresponding monochromatic subset. This is in striking contrast with graphs, where these two quantities have the same order of magnitude. To prove our result, we obtain a new upper bound on the $\ell$-color Ramsey numbers of complete multipartite 3-uniform hypergraphs, which answers another open question of Erdős and Hajnal.

Directed graphs without short cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a directed graph $G$ without loops or parallel edges, let $β(G)$ denote the size of the smallest feedback arc set, i.e., the smallest subset $X \subset E(G)$ such that $G \sm X$ has no directed cycles. Let $γ(G)$ be the number of unordered pairs of vertices of $G$ which are not adjacent. We prove that every directed graph whose shortest directed cycle has length at least $r \ge 4$ satisfies $β(G) \le cγ(G)/r^2$, where $c$ is an absolute constant. This is tight up to the constant factor and extends a result of Chudnovsky, Seymour, and Sullivan. This result can be also used to answer a question of Yuster concerning almost given length cycles in digraphs. We show that for any fixed $0 < θ< 1/2$ and sufficiently large $n$, if $G$ is a digraph with $n$ vertices and $β(G) \ge θn^2$, then for any $0 \le m \le θn-o(n)$ it contains a directed cycle whose length is between $m$ and $m+6 θ^{-1/2}$. Moreover, there is a constant $C$ such that either $G$ contains directed cycles of every length between $C$ and $θn-o(n)$ or it is close to a digraph $G'$ with a simple structure: every strong component of $G'$ is periodic. These results are also tight up to the constant factors.

Hypergraph Ramsey numbers

The Ramsey number r_k(s,n) is the minimum N such that every red-blue coloring of the k-tuples of an N-element set contains either a red set of size s or a blue set of size n, where a set is called red (blue) if all k-tuples from this set are red (blue). In this paper we obtain new estimates for several basic hypergraph Ramsey problems. We give a new upper bound for r_k(s,n) for k \geq 3 and s fixed. In particular, we show that r_3(s,n) \leq 2^{n^{s-2}\log n}, which improves by a factor of n^{s-2}/ polylog n the exponent of the previous upper bound of Erdos and Rado from 1952. We also obtain a new lower bound for these numbers, showing that there are constants c_1,c_2>0 such that r_3(s,n) \geq 2^{c_1 sn \log (n/s)} for all 4 \leq s \leq c_2n. When s is a constant, it gives the first superexponential lower bound for r_3(s,n), answering an open question posed by Erdos and Hajnal in 1972. Next, we consider the 3-color Ramsey number r_3(n,n,n), which is the minimum N such that every 3-coloring of the triples of an N-element set contains a monochromatic set of size n. Improving another old result of Erdos and Hajnal, we show that r_3(n,n,n) \geq 2^{n^{c \log n}}. Finally, we make some progress on related hypergraph Ramsey-type problems.

Unavoidable patterns

Let \mathcal{F}_k denote the family of 2-edge-colored complete graphs on 2k vertices in which one color forms either a clique of order k or two disjoint cliques of order k. Bollobás conjectured that for every ε>0 and positive integer k there is an n(k,ε) such that every 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph of order n \geq n(k,ε) which has at least ε{n \choose 2} edges in each color contains a member of \mathcal{F}_k. This conjecture was proved by Cutler and Montágh, who showed that n(k,ε)<4^{k/ε}. We give a much simpler proof of this conjecture which in addition shows that n(k,ε)<ε^{-ck} for some constant c. This bound is tight up to the constant factor in the exponent for all k and ε. We also discuss similar results for tournaments and hypergraphs.

Two remarks on the Burr-Erdos conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the minimum positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph K_N on N vertices contains a monochromatic copy of H. A graph H is d-degenerate if every subgraph of H has minimum degree at most d. Burr and Erdős in 1975 conjectured that for each positive integer d there is a constant c_d such that r(H) \leq c_dn for every d-degenerate graph H on n vertices. We show that for such graphs r(H) \leq 2^{c_d\sqrt{\log n}}n, improving on an earlier bound of Kostochka and Sudakov. We also study Ramsey numbers of random graphs, showing that for d fixed, almost surely the random graph G(n,d/n) has Ramsey number linear in n. For random bipartite graphs, our proof gives nearly tight bounds.

Large induced trees in K_r-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph G, let t(G) denote the maximum number of vertices in an induced subgraph of G that is a tree. In this paper, we study the problem of bounding t(G) for graphs which do not contain a complete graph K_r on r vertices. This problem was posed twenty years ago by Erdos, Saks, and Sos. Substantially improving earlier results of various researchers, we prove that every connected triangle-free graph on n vertices contains an induced tree of order \sqrt{n}. When r >= 4, we also show that t(G) >= (\log n)/(4 \log r) for every connected K_r-free graph G of order n. Both of these bounds are tight up to small multiplicative constants, and the first one disproves a recent conjecture of Matousek and Samal.

Ramsey-type problem for an almost monochromatic K_4

In this short note we prove that there is a constant $c$ such that every k-edge-coloring of the complete graph K_n with n > 2^{ck} contains a K_4 whose edges receive at most two colors. This improves on a result of Kostochka and Mubayi, and is the first exponential bound for this problem.
