A note on acyclic vertex-colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the acyclic chromatic number of a graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is less than $2.835Δ^{4/3}+Δ$. This improves the previous upper bound, which was $50Δ^{4/3}$. To do so, we draw inspiration from works by Alon, McDiarmid and Reed and by Esperet and Parreau.
Supersaturation in the Boolean lattice
Published in Integers 14A (2014): #A4 • Search Publication
We prove a "supersaturation-type" extension of both Sperner's Theorem (1928) and its generalization by Erdos (1945) to k-chains. Our result implies that a largest family whose size is x more than the size of a largest k-chain free family and that contains the minimum number of k-chains is the family formed by taking the middle (k-1) rows of the Boolean lattice and x elements from the k-th middle row. We prove our result using the symmetric chain decomposition method of de Bruijn, van Ebbenhorst Tengbergen, and Kruyswijk (1951).

Transversals of Longest Paths and Cycles

Let G be a graph of order n. Let lpt(G) be the minimum cardinality of a set X of vertices of G such that X intersects every longest path of G and define lct(G) analogously for cycles instead of paths. We prove that lpt(G) \leq ceiling(n/4-n^{2/3}/90), if G is connected, lct(G) \leq ceiling(n/3-n^{2/3}/36), if G is 2-connected, and \lpt(G) \leq 3, if G is a connected circular arc graph. Our bound on lct(G) improves an earlier result of Thomassen and our bound for circular arc graphs relates to an earlier statement of Balister \emph{et al.} the argument of which contains a gap. Furthermore, we prove upper bounds on lpt(G) for planar graphs and graphs of bounded tree-width.
Subcubic triangle-free graphs have fractional chromatic number at most 14/5

We prove that every subcubic triangle-free graph has fractional chromatic number at most 14/5, thus confirming a conjecture of Heckman and Thomas [A new proof of the independence ratio of triangle-free cubic graphs. Discrete Math. 233 (2001), 233--237].
Extensions of Fractional Precolorings show Discontinuous Behavior

We study the following problem: given a real number k and integer d, what is the smallest epsilon such that any fractional (k+epsilon)-precoloring of vertices at pairwise distances at least d of a fractionally k-colorable graph can be extended to a fractional (k+epsilon)-coloring of the whole graph? The exact values of epsilon were known for k=2 and k\ge3 and any d. We determine the exact values of epsilon for k \in (2,3) if d=4, and k \in [2.5,3) if d=6, and give upper bounds for k \in (2,3) if d=5,7, and k \in (2,2.5) if d=6. Surprisingly, epsilon viewed as a function of k is discontinuous for all those values of d.

Expanders graphs and sieving in combinatorial structures

We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong explicit sense) random coloured subsets of integers contain monochromatic (non-empty) subsets summing to zero, or that a random coloring of the edges of a complete graph contains a monochromatic triangle.
A new bound for the 2/3 conjecture
We show that any n-vertex complete graph with edges colored with three colors contains a set of at most four vertices such that the number of the neighbors of these vertices in one of the colors is at least 2n/3. The previous best value, proved by Erdos, Faudree, Gould, Gyárfás, Rousseau and Schelp in 1989, is 22. It is conjectured that three vertices suffice.
Multiple Petersen subdivisions in permutation graphs

A permutation graph is a cubic graph admitting a 1-factor M whose complement consists of two chordless cycles. Extending results of Ellingham and of Goldwasser and Zhang, we prove that if e is an edge of M such that every 4-cycle containing an edge of M contains e, then e is contained in a subdivision of the Petersen graph of a special type. In particular, if the graph is cyclically 5-edge-connected, then every edge of M is contained in such a subdivision. Our proof is based on a characterization of cographs in terms of twin vertices. We infer a linear lower bound on the number of Petersen subdivisions in a permutation graph with no 4-cycles, and give a construction showing that this lower bound is tight up to a constant factor.
Min-max relations for odd cycles in planar graphs
Let m(G) be the maximum number of vertex-disjoint odd cycles of a graph G and t(G) the minimum number of vertices whose removal makes G bipartite. We show that t(G)<=6m(G) if G is planar. This improves the previous bound t(G)<=10m(G) by Fiorini, Hardy, Reed and Vetta [Math. Program. Ser. B 110 (2007), 71-91].

A new lower bound based on Gromov's method of selecting heavily covered points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Boros and Furedi (for d=2) and Barany (for abritrary d) proved that there exists a positive real number c_d such that for every set P of n points in R^d in general position, there exists a point of R^d contained in at least c_d n!/(d+1)!(n-d-1)! d-simplices with vertices at the points of P. Gromov improved the lower bound on c_d by topological means. Using methods from extremal combinatorics, we improve one of the quantities appearing in Gromov's approach and thereby provide a new stronger lower bound on c_d for arbitrary d. In particular, we improve the lower bound on c_3 from 0.06332 to more than 0.07480; the best upper bound known on c_3 being 0.09375.
Every plane graph of maximum degree 8 has an edge-face 9-colouring
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 25(2): 514-533, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
An edge-face colouring of a plane graph with edge set $E$ and face set $F$ is a colouring of the elements of $E \cup F$ such that adjacent or incident elements receive different colours. Borodin proved that every plane graph of maximum degree $Δ\ge10$ can be edge-face coloured with $Δ+1$ colours. Borodin's bound was recently extended to the case where $Δ=9$. In this paper, we extend it to the case $Δ=8$.
The last fraction of a fractional conjecture
Reed conjectured that for every $\varepsilon>0$ and every integer $Δ$, there exists $g$ such that the fractional total chromatic number of every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and girth at least $g$ is at most $Δ+1+\varepsilon$. The conjecture was proven to be true when $Δ=3$ or $Δ$ is even. We settle the conjecture by proving it for the remaining cases.
Graphs with bounded tree-width and large odd-girth are almost bipartite

We prove that for every $k$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $g$ such that every graph with tree-width at most $k$ and odd-girth at least $g$ has circular chromatic number at most $2+\varepsilon$.

A fullerene graph is a planar cubic 3-connected graph with only pentagonal and hexagonal faces. We show that fullerene graphs have exponentially many perfect matchings.
