Multi-sum Rogers-Ramanujan Type Identities
Published in J. Math. Anal. Appl 522 (2023) Paper No.126960 • View PublicationBIB
We use an integral method to establish a number of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities involving double and triple sums. The key step for proving such identities is to find some infinite products whose integrals over suitable contours are still infinite products. The method used here is motivated by Rosengren's proof of the Kanade-Russell identities.

New Proofs of Some Double Sum Rogers-Ramanujan Type Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Rosengren utilized an integral method to prove a number of conjectural identities found by Kanade and Russell. Using this integral method, we give new proofs to some double sum identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type. These identities were earlier proved by approaches such as combinatorial arguments or by using $q$-difference equations. Our proofs are based on streamlined calculations, which relate these double sum identities to some known Rogers-Ramanujan type identities with single sums. Moreover, we prove a conjectural identity of Andrews and Uncu which was earlier confirmed by Chern.

Modular Proofs of Gosper's Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give unified modular proofs to all of Gosper's identities on the $q$-constant $Π_q$. We also confirm Gosper's observation that for any distinct positive integers $n_1,\cdots,n_m$ with $m\geq 3$, $Π_{q^{n_1}}$, $\cdots$, $Π_{q^{n_m}}$ satisfy a nonzero homogeneous polynomial. Our proofs provide a method to rediscover Gosper's identities. Meanwhile, several results on $Π_q$ found by El Bachraoui have been corrected. Furthermore, we illustrate a strategy to construct some of Gosper's identities using hauptmoduls for genus zero congruence subgroups.

Sign Changes of Coefficients of Powers of the Infinite Borwein Product
Published • View PublicationBIB
We denote by $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ the coefficient of $q^n$ in the series expansion of $(q;q)_\infty^m(q^t;q^t)_\infty^{-m}$, which is the $m$-th power of the infinite Borwein product. Let $t$ and $m$ be positive integers with $m(t-1)\leq 24$. We provide asymptotic formula for $c_t^{(m)}(n)$, and give characterizations of $n$ for which $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is positive, negative or zero. We show that $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is ultimately periodic in sign and conjecture that this is still true for other positive integer values of $t$ and $m$. Furthermore, we confirm this conjecture in the cases $(t,m)=(2,m),(p,1),(p,3)$ for arbitrary positive integer $m$ and prime $p$.

Truncated Series with Nonnegative Coefficients from the Jacobi Triple Product
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews and Merca investigated a truncated version of Euler's pentagonal number theorem and showed that the coefficients of the truncated series are nonnegative. They also considered the truncated series arising from Jacobi's triple product identity, and they that its coefficients are nonnegative. This conjecture was posed by Guo and Zeng independently and confirmed by Mao and Yee using different approaches. In this paper, we provide a new combinatorial proof of their nonnegativity result related to Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Meanwhile, we find an analogous result for a truncated series arising from Jacobi's triple product identity in a different manner.

Brouwer degree for Kazdan-Warner equations on a connected finite graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Kazdan-Warner equations on a connected finite graph via the method of the degree theory. Firstly, we prove that all solutions to the Kazdan-Warner equation with nonzero prescribed function are uniformly bounded and the Brouwer degree is well defined. Secondly, we compute the Brouwer degree case by case. As consequences, we give new proofs of some known existence results for the Kazdan-Warner equation on a connected finite graph.
Positivity and divisibility of alternating descent polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The alternating descent statistic on permutations was introduced by Chebikin as a variant of the descent statistic. We show that the alternating descent polynomials on permutations are unimodal via a five-term recurrence relation. We also found a quadratic recursion for the alternating major index $q$-analog of the alternating descent polynomials. As an interesting application of this quadratic recursion, we show that $(1+q)^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ divides $\sum_{π\in\mathfrak{S}_n}q^{\rm{altmaj}(π)}$, where $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the set of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and $\rm{altmaj}(π)$ is the alternating major index of $π$. This leads us to discover a $q$-analog of $n!=2^{\ell}m$, $m$ odd, using the statistic of alternating major index. Moreover, we study the $γ$-vectors of the alternating descent polynomials by using these two recursions and the ${\textbf{cd}}$-index. Further intriguing conjectures are formulated, which indicate that the alternating descent statistic deserves more work.

Parity of coefficients of mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the parity of coefficients of classical mock theta functions. Suppose $g$ is a formal power series with integer coefficients, and let $c(g;n)$ be the coefficient of $q^n$ in its series expansion. We say that $g$ is of parity type $(a,1-a)$ if $c(g;n)$ takes even values with probability $a$ for $n\geq 0$. We show that among the 44 classical mock theta functions, 21 of them are of parity type $(1,0)$. We further conjecture that 19 mock theta functions are of parity type $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ and 4 functions are of parity type $(\frac{3}{4},\frac{1}{4})$. We also give characterizations of $n$ such that $c(g;n)$ is odd for the mock theta functions of parity type $(1,0)$.

Farey sequence and Graham's conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let ${F}_{n}$ be the Farey sequence of order $n$. For $S \subseteq {F}_n$ we let $\mathcal{Q}(S) = \left\{x/y:x,y\in S, x\le y \, \, \textrm{and} \, \, y\neq 0\right\}$. We show that if $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$, then $|S|\leq n+1$. Moreover, we prove that in any of the following cases: (1) $\mathcal{Q}(S)=F_n$; (2) $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$ and $|S|=n+1$, we must have $S = \left\{0,1,\frac{1}{2},\ldots,\frac{1}{n}\right\}$ or $S=\left\{0,1,\frac{1}{n},\ldots,\frac{n-1}{n}\right\}$ except for $n=4$, where we have an additional set $\{0, 1, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}\}$ for the second case. Our results are based on Graham's GCD conjectures, which have been proved by Balasubramanian and Soundararajan.

Moments of ranks and cranks, and Quotients of Eisenstein Series and the Dedekind Eta Function
Atkin and Garvan introduced the functions $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$, which denote the $k$-th moments of ranks and cranks in the theory of partitions. Let $e_{2r}(n)$ be the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $E_{2r}(τ)/η(τ)$, where $E_{2r}(τ)$ is the classical Eisenstein series of weight $2r$ and $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta function. Via the theory of quasi-modular forms, we find that for $k \leq 5$, $N_k(n)$ and $M_k(n)$ can be expressed using $e_{2r}(n)$ ($2\leq r \leq k$), $p(n)$ and $N_2(n)$. For $k>5$, additional functions are required for such expressions. For $r\in \{2, 3, 4, 5, 7\}$, by studying the action of Hecke operators on $E_{2r}(τ)/η(τ)$, we provide explicit congruences modulo arbitrary powers of primes for $e_{2r}(n)$. Moreover, for $\ell \in \{5, 7, 11, 13\}$ and any $k\geq 1$, we present uniform methods for finding nice representations for $\sum_{n=0}^\infty e_{2r}\left(\frac{\ell^{k}n+1}{24}\right)q^n$, which work for every $r\geq 2$. These representations allow us to prove congruences modulo powers of $\ell$, and we have done so for $e_4(n)$ and $e_6(n)$ as examples. Based on the congruences satisfied by $e_{2r}(n)$, we establish congruences modulo arbitrary powers of $\ell$ for the moments and symmetrized moments of ranks and cranks as well as higher order $\mathrm{spt}$-functions.

The smallest parts function associated with $ω(q)$
We establish two families of congruences modulo powers of 5 for the Fourier coefficients of $(2E_2(2τ)-E_2(τ))η(2τ)^{-1}$, where $E_2(τ)$ is the weight 2 Eisenstein series and $η(τ)$ is the Dedekind eta function. This allows us to prove similar congruences for two smallest parts functions. The first function is $\mathrm{spt}_ω(n)$, which was introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee and associated with Ramanujan/Watson's third order mock theta function $ω(q)$. The second one is $\mathrm{spt}_{C5}(n)$, which appeared in the work of Garvan and Jennings-Shaffer. Moreover, we confirm two conjectural congruences of Wang.

Representations of mock theta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the works of Liu, we provide a unified approach to find Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series representations for mock theta functions. We establish a number of parameterized identities with two parameters $a$ and $b$. Specializing the choices of $(a,b)$, we not only give various known and new representations for the mock theta functions of orders 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8, but also present many other interesting identities. We find that some mock theta functions of different orders are related to each other, in the sense that their representations can be deduced from the same $(a,b)$-parameterized identity. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of false Appell-Lerch series. We then express the Appell-Lerch series, false Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series in this paper using the building blocks $m(x,q,z)$ and $f_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced by Hickerson and Mortenson, as well as $\overline{m}(x,q,z)$ and $\overline{f}_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced in this paper. We also show the equivalences of our new representations for several mock theta functions and the known representations.

Some inequalities for Garvan's bicrank function of 2-colored partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In order to provide a unified combinatorial interpretation of congruences modulo $5$ for 2-colored partition functions, Garvan introduced a bicrank statistic in terms of weighted vector partitions. In this paper, we obtain some inequalities between the bicrank counts $M^{*}(r,m,n)$ for $m=2$, $3$ and $4$ via their asymptotic formulas and some $q$-series techniques. These inequalities are parallel to Andrews and Lewis' results on the rank and crank counts for ordinary partitions.

Congruences Modulo Powers of 3 for 3- and 9-Colored Generalized Frobenius Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $cφ_{k}(n)$ be the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$. We establish some infinite families of congruences for $cφ_{3}(n)$ and $cφ_{9}(n)$ modulo arbitrary powers of 3, which refine the results of Kolitsch. For example, for $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge 0$, we prove that \[cφ_{3}\Big(3^{2k}n+\frac{7\cdot 3^{2k}+1}{8}\Big) \equiv 0 \pmod{3^{4k+5}}.\] We give two different proofs to the congruences satisfied by $cφ_{9}(n)$. One of the proofs uses an relation between $cφ_{9}(n)$ and $cφ_{3}(n)$ due to Kolitsch, for which we provide a new proof in this paper.

Fractional Powers of the Generating Function for the Partition Function

Let $p_{k}(n)$ be the coefficient of $q^n$ in the series expansion of $(q;q)_{\infty}^{k}$. It is known that the partition function $p(n)$, which corresponds to the case when $k=-1$, satisfies congruences such as $p(5n+4)\equiv 0\pmod{5}$. In this article, we discuss congruences satisfied by $p_{k}(n)$ when $k$ is a rational number.

Arithmetic Properties of Odd Ranks and $k$-Marked Odd Durfee Symbols
Let $N^{0}(m,n)$ be the number of odd Durfee symbols of $n$ with odd rank $m$, and $N^{0}(a,M;n)$ be the number of odd Durfee symbols of $n$ with odd rank congruent to $a$ modulo $M$. We give explicit formulas for the generating functions of $N^{0}(a,M;n)$ and their $\ell$-dissections where $0\le a \le M-1$ and $M, \ell \in \{2, 4, 8\}$. From these formulas, we obtain some interesting arithmetic properties of $N^{0}(a,M;n)$. Furthermore, let $\mathcal{D}_{k}^{0}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-marked odd Durfee symbols of $n$. Andrews (2007) conjectured that $\mathcal{D}_{2}^{0}(n)$ is even if $n\equiv 4$ or 6 (mod 8) and $\mathcal{D}_{3}^{0}(n)$ is even if $n\equiv 1, 9, 11$ or 13 (mod 16). Using our results on odd ranks, we prove Andrews' conjectures.

Zeros of the deformed exponential function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n!}q^{n(n-1)/2}x^n$ ($0<q<1$) be the deformed exponential function. It is known that the zeros of $f(x)$ are real and form a negative decreasing sequence $(x_k)$ ($k\ge 1$). We investigate the complete asymptotic expansion for $x_{k}$ and prove that for any $n\ge1$, as $k\to \infty$, \begin{align*} x_k=-kq^{1-k}\Big(1+\sum_{i=1}^{n}C_i(q)k^{-1-i}+o(k^{-1-n})\Big), \end{align*} where $C_i(q)$ are some $q$ series which can be determined recursively. We show that each $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[A_0,A_1,A_2]$, where $A_{i}=\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}m^iσ(m)q^m$ and $σ(m)$ denotes the sum of positive divisors of $m$. When writing $C_{i}$ as a polynomial in $A_0, A_1$ and $A_2$, we find explicit formulas for the coefficients of the linear terms by using Bernoulli numbers. Moreover, we also prove that $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[E_2,E_4,E_6]$, where $E_2$, $E_4$ and $E_6$ are the classical Eisenstein series of weight 2, 4 and 6, respectively.

Explicit Formulas for Partition Pairs and Triples with 3-Cores
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A_{3}(n)$ (resp. ${{B}_{3}}(n)$) denote the number of partition pairs (resp. triples) of $n$ where each partition is 3-core. By applying Ramanujan's ${}_{1}ψ_{1}$ formula and Bailey's ${}_{6}ψ_{6}$ formula, we find the explicit formulas for $A_{3}(n)$ and $B_{3}(n)$. Using these formulas, we confirm a conjecture of Xia and establish many arithmetic identities satisfied by $A_{3}(n)$ and $B_{3}(n)$.
