Tree-partitions and small-spread tree-decompositions
Tree-decompositions and treewidth are of fundamental importance in structural and algorithmic graph theory. The "spread" of a tree-decomposition is the minimum integer $s$ such that every vertex lies in at most $s$ bags. A tree-decomposition is "domino" if it has spread 2, which is the smallest interesting value of spread. So that spread 1 becomes interesting, one can relax the definition of tree-decomposition to "tree-partition", which allows the endpoints of each edge to be in the same bag or adjacent bags, while demanding that each vertex appears in exactly one bag. Ding and Oporowski [1995] showed that every graph $G$ with treewidth $k$ and maximum degree $Δ$ has a tree-partition with width $O(kΔ)$. We prove the same result with an improved constant, and with the extra property that the underlying tree has maximum degree $O(Δ)$ and $O(|V(G)|/kΔ)$ vertices. This result implies (with an improved constant) the best known upper bound on the domino treewidth of $O(kΔ^2)$, due to Bodlaender [1999]. Moreover, solving an open problem of Bodlaender, we show this upper bound is best possible, by exhibiting graphs with domino treewidth $Ω(kΔ^2)$ for $k\geqslant 2$. On the other hand, allowing the spread to be a function of $k$, we show that width $O(kΔ)$ can be achieved. This result exploits a connection to chordal completions, which we show is best possible, a result of independent interest.
A coarse Gallai theorem
We prove that there exist functions $f$ and $g$ such that for all positive integers $k$ and $d$, for every graph $G$ and every subset $A$ of the vertices of $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ $A$-paths such that vertices of different $A$-paths are at distance at least $d$ in $G$, or there exists a set $X$ of the vertices of $G$ with $|X|\leq f(k)$ such that every $A$-path in $G$ contains a vertex of $B_G(X,g(k,d))$.
Small counterexamples to the fat minor conjecture
We narrow the gap between the family of graphs that do and the family of graphs that do not satisfy the fat minor conjecture by obtaining much simpler counterexamples than were previously known, including $K_t, t \geq 6$ and $K_{s,t}, s,t \geq 4$ and $K_{2,2,2}$. This is achieved by establishing a `coarse self-similarity' property of the graphs used by Nguyen, Scott and Seymour to disprove the `coarse Menger conjecture'. This property may be of independent interest.

An alternative characterisation of graphs quasi-isometric to graphs of bounded treewidth
Quasi-isometry is a measure of how similar two graphs are at `large-scale'. Nguyen, Scott, and Seymour [arXiv:2501.09839] and Hickingbotham [arXiv:2501.10840] independently gave a characterisation of graphs quasi-isometric to graphs of treewidth $k$. In this paper, we give a new characterisation of such graphs. Specifically, we show that such graphs $G$ are characterised by the existence of a partition whose quotient has treewidth at most $k$ and such that each part has bounded weak diameter in $G$. The primary contribution of our characterisation is a structural description of graphs that admit such a quasi-isometry. This differs from the characterisation mentioned above, which primarily shows the existence of such a quasi-isometry. The characterisations are complementary, and neither immediately implies the other.
Excluding $K_{2,t}$ as a fat minor
We prove that for every $t \in \mathbb{N}$, the graph $K_{2,t}$ satisfies the fat minor conjecture of Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu: for every $K\in \mathbb{N}$ there exist $M,A\in \mathbb{N}$ such that every graph with no $K$-fat $K_{2,t}$ minor is $(M,A)$-quasi-isometric to a graph with no $K_{2,t}$ minor. We use this to obtain an efficient algorithm for approximating the minimal multiplicative distortion of any embedding of a finite graph into a $K_{2,t}$-minor-free graph, answering a question of Chepoi, Dragan, Newman, Rabinovich, and Vaxès from 2012.

Graphs Excluding a Minor in Blowups of Treewidth 3 Graphs
Alon, Seymour, and Thomas [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 1990] famously showed that every $n$-vertex $K_h$-minor-free graph has treewidth $O_h(\sqrt{n})$. Recently, Distel, Dujmović, Eppstein, Hickingbotham, Joret, Micek, Morin, Seweryn, and Wood [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 2024] refined this by showing that these graphs are $O_h(\sqrt{n})$-blowups of treewidth $4$ graphs. We improve this by showing that these graphs are $O_h(\sqrt{n})$-blowups of treewidth $3$ graphs.

An improved quasi-isometry between graphs of bounded cliquewidth and graphs of bounded treewidth
Cliquewidth is a dense analogue of treewidth. It can be deduced from recent results by Hickingbotham [arXiv:2501.10840] and Nguyen, Scott, and Seymour [arXiv:2501.09839] that graphs of bounded cliquewidth are quasi-isometric to graphs of bounded treewidth. We improve on this by showing that graphs of cliquewidth $k$ admit a partition with `local, but dense' parts whose quotient has treewidth $k-1$. Specifically, each part is contained within the closed neighbourhood of some vertex. We use this to construct a $3$-quasi-isometry between graphs of cliquewidth $k$ and graphs of treewidth $k-1$. This is an improvement in both the quasi-isometry parameter and the treewidth. We also show that the bound on the treewidth is tight up to an additive constant.
Treewidth 2 in the Planar Graph Product Structure Theorem

We prove that every planar graph is contained in $H_1\boxtimes H_2\boxtimes K_2$ for some graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ both with treewidth 2. This resolves a question of Liu, Norin and Wood [arXiv:2410.20333]. We also show this result is best possible: for any $c \in \mathbb{N}$, there is a planar graph $G$ such that for any tree $T$ and graph $H$ with $\text{tw}(H) \leqslant 2$, $G$ is not contained in $H \boxtimes T \boxtimes K_c$.
Treewidth, Hadwiger Number, and Induced Minors
Treewidth and Hadwiger number are two of the most important parameters in structural graph theory. This paper studies graph classes in which large treewidth implies the existence of a large complete graph minor. To formalise this, we say that a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is (tw,had)-bounded if there is a function $f$ (called the (tw,had)-bounding function) such that tw$(G)$ $\leq$ $f$(had$(G)$) for every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$. We characterise (tw,had)-bounded graph classes as those that exclude some planar graph as an induced minor, and use this characterisation to show that every proper vertex-minor-closed class is (tw,had)-bounded. Furthermore, we demonstrate that any (tw,had)-bounded graph class has a (tw,had)-bounding function in O(had$(G)^9$polylog(had$(G)$)). Our bound comes from the bound for the Grid Minor Theorem given by Chuzhoy and Tan, and any quantitative improvement to their result will lead directly to an improvement to our result. More strongly, we conjecture that every (tw,had)-bounded graph class has a linear (tw,had)-bounding function. In support of this conjecture, we show that it holds for the class of outer-string graphs, and for a natural generalisation of outer-string graphs: intersection graphs of strings rooted at the boundary of a fixed surface. We also verify our conjecture for low-rank perturbations of circle graphs, which is an important step towards verifying it for all proper vertex-minor-closed classes.

Proper Minor-Closed Classes in Blowups of Fans
Dujmović et al. [arXiv:2407.05936] showed that any $n$-vertex planar graph is contained in a $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2(n))$-blowup of a fan, and asked if the same holds for any $n$-vertex $K_t$-minor-free graph. We answer this in the positive, showing that such a graph is contained in a $O_t(\sqrt{n}\log^2(n))$-blowup of a fan.
Planar graphs in blowups of fans

We show that every $n$-vertex planar graph is contained in the graph obtained from a fan by blowing up each vertex by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. Equivalently, every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set $X$ of $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has bandwidth $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. We in fact prove the same result for any proper minor-closed class, and we prove more general results that explore the trade-off between $X$ and the bandwidth of $G-X$. The proofs use three key ingredients. The first is a new local sparsification lemma, which shows that every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set of $O((n\log n)/δ)$ vertices whose removal results in a graph with local density at most $δ$. The second is a generalization of a method of Feige and Rao that relates bandwidth and local density using volume-preserving Euclidean embeddings. The third ingredient is graph products, which are a key tool in the extension to any proper minor-closed class.

Proper Minor-Closed Classes of Graphs have Assouad-Nagata Dimension 2
Asymptotic dimension and Assouad-Nagata dimension are measures of the large-scale shape of a class of graphs. Bonamy, Bousquet, Esperet, Groenland, Liu, Pirot, and Scott [J. Eur. Math. Society] showed that any proper minor-closed class has asymptotic dimension 2, dropping to 1 only if the treewidth is bounded. We improve this result by showing it also holds for the stricter Assouad-Nagata dimension. We also characterise when subdivision-closed classes of graphs have bounded Assouad-Nagata dimension.
Powers of planar graphs, product structure, and blocking partitions
We prove that the $k$-power of any planar graph $G$ is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(Δ(G),k)}$ for some graph $H$ with bounded treewidth, some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Ossona de Mendez. In fact, we prove a more general result in terms of shallow minors that implies similar results for many `beyond planar' graph classes, without dependence on $Δ(G)$. For example, we prove that every $k$-planar graph is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(k)}$ for some graph $H$ with bounded treewidth and some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Dujmović, Morin and Wood. We generalise all these results for graphs of bounded Euler genus, still with an absolute bound on the treewidth. At the heart of our proof is the following new concept of independent interest. An $\ell$-blocking partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that every path of length greater than $\ell$ in $G$ contains at least two vertices in one part. We prove that for some constant $\ell \ge 1$ every graph of Euler genus $g$ has an $\ell$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $Δ(G)$ and $g$. Motivated by this result, we study blocking partitions in their own right. We show that every graph $G$ has a $2$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $Δ(G)$ and $\textrm{tw}(G)$. On the other hand, we show that 4-regular graphs do not have $\ell$-blocking partitions with bounded size parts.

Alon, Seymour and Thomas [1990] proved that every $n$-vertex graph excluding $K_t$ as a minor has treewidth less than $t^{3/2}\sqrt{n}$. Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022] recently refined this result by showing that every such graph is a subgraph of some graph with treewidth $t-2$, where each vertex is blown up by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{tn})$. Solving an open problem of Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022], we prove that the treewidth bound can be reduced to $4$ while keeping blowups of order $O_t(\sqrt{n})$. As an extension of the Lipton--Tarjan theorem, in the case of planar graphs, we show that the treewidth can be further reduced to $2$, which is best possible. We generalise this result for $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, with blowups of order $O(t\sqrt{n})$. This setting includes graphs embeddable on any fixed surface.
Graphs of Linear Growth have Bounded Treewidth

A graph class $\mathcal{G}$ has linear growth if, for each graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ and every positive integer $r$, every subgraph of $G$ with radius at most $r$ contains $O(r)$ vertices. In this paper, we show that every graph class with linear growth has bounded treewidth.

Tree-Partitions with Small Bounded Degree Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A "tree-partition" of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ such that identifying the vertices in each part gives a tree. It is known that every graph with treewidth $k$ and maximum degree $Δ$ has a tree-partition with parts of size $O(kΔ)$. We prove the same result with the extra property that the underlying tree has maximum degree $O(Δ)$ and $O(|V(G)|/k)$ vertices.
Product structure of graph classes with bounded treewidth

We show that many graphs with bounded treewidth can be described as subgraphs of the strong product of a graph with smaller treewidth and a bounded-size complete graph. To this end, define the "underlying treewidth" of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ to be the minimum non-negative integer $c$ such that, for some function $f$, for every graph ${G \in \mathcal{G}}$ there is a graph $H$ with ${\text{tw}(H) \leq c}$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of ${H \boxtimes K_{f(\text{tw}(G))}}$. We introduce disjointed coverings of graphs and show they determine the underlying treewidth of any graph class. Using this result, we prove that the class of planar graphs has underlying treewidth 3; the class of $K_{s,t}$-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth $s$ (for ${t \geq \max\{s,3\}}$); and the class of $K_t$-minor-free graphs has underlying treewidth ${t-2}$. In general, we prove that a monotone class has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if it excludes some fixed topological minor. We also study the underlying treewidth of graph classes defined by an excluded subgraph or excluded induced subgraph. We show that the class of graphs with no $H$ subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of $H$ is a subdivided star, and that the class of graphs with no induced $H$ subgraph has bounded underlying treewidth if and only if every component of $H$ is a star.
Improved product structure for graphs on surfaces

Dujmović, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt and Wood [J. ACM 2020] proved that for every graph $G$ with Euler genus $g$ there is a graph $H$ with treewidth at most 4 and a path $P$ such that $G\subseteq H \boxtimes P \boxtimes K_{\max\{2g,3\}}$. We improve this result by replacing "4" by "3" and with $H$ planar. We in fact prove a more general result in terms of so-called framed graphs. This implies that every $(g,d)$-map graph is contained in $ H \boxtimes P\boxtimes K_\ell$, for some planar graph $H$ with treewidth $3$, where $\ell=\max\{2g\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor,d+3\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor-3\}$. It also implies that every $(g,1)$-planar graph (that is, graphs that can be drawn in a surface of Euler genus $g$ with at most one crossing per edge) is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{\max\{4g,7\}}$, for some planar graph $H$ with treewidth $3$.
