Treewidth of Products of Graphs with High Treewidth
Treewidth is the standard measure for how ``tree-like'' a graph is. This paper studies how the treewidth of a product graph depends on the treewidth of its factors. Kozawa, Otachi, and Yamazaki [2014] and Hickingbotham and Wood [2025] independently showed that $\text{tw}(G\boxtimes H)\geq (\text{tw}(G)+1)\text{had}(H)-1$ for all graphs $G$ and $H$, where $\text{had}(H)$ is the Hadwiger number of $H$. We improve this bound to $\text{tw}(G\boxtimes H)\geq (\text{tw}(G)+1)(\text{tw}(H)+1)-1$, thereby solving an open problem of Hickingbotham and Wood. We also prove analogous product inequalities for pathwidth, Cartesian products, and strict bramble number, which is a parameter that is tied to treewidth. As an application of our results, we show that products of expanders have large subgraphs that are expanders.
Far-apart Erdős--Pósa property of long cycles
We prove that there exist functions $f:\mathbb N^2\to\mathbb N$ and $g:\mathbb N\to\mathbb N$ such that for all positive integers $k$, $d$, and $\ell\ge3$, every graph $G$ either contains $k$ cycles of length at least $\ell$ that are pairwise at distance greater than $d$, or admits a subset of vertices $X$ with $|X|\le f(k,\ell)$ such that $G-B_G(X,g(d))$ contains no cycle of length at least $\ell$, where $B_G(X,r)$ denotes the ball of radius $r$ around $X$. This generalizes a theorem of Dujmović, Joret, Micek, and Morin (2024), which established the $\ell=3$ case. Moreover, we prove that the theorem holds with $f(k,\ell)\in\mathcal{O}(\ell k\log k)$ and $g(d)\in\mathcal{O}(d)$. The linear bound on $g$ is best possible, while the bound on $f$ is optimal as a function of $k$ for every fixed $\ell$. In particular, for $\ell=3$ our result improves the previous bound of $\mathcal{O}(k^{18}\mathsf{polylog} k)$ by Dujmović et al.

Tree-partitions and small-spread tree-decompositions
Tree-decompositions and treewidth are of fundamental importance in structural and algorithmic graph theory. The "spread" of a tree-decomposition is the minimum integer $s$ such that every vertex lies in at most $s$ bags. A tree-decomposition is "domino" if it has spread 2, which is the smallest interesting value of spread. So that spread 1 becomes interesting, one can relax the definition of tree-decomposition to "tree-partition", which allows the endpoints of each edge to be in the same bag or adjacent bags, while demanding that each vertex appears in exactly one bag. Ding and Oporowski [1995] showed that every graph $G$ with treewidth $k$ and maximum degree $Δ$ has a tree-partition with width $O(kΔ)$. We prove the same result with an improved constant, and with the extra property that the underlying tree has maximum degree $O(Δ)$ and $O(|V(G)|/kΔ)$ vertices. This result implies (with an improved constant) the best known upper bound on the domino treewidth of $O(kΔ^2)$, due to Bodlaender [1999]. Moreover, solving an open problem of Bodlaender, we show this upper bound is best possible, by exhibiting graphs with domino treewidth $Ω(kΔ^2)$ for $k\geqslant 2$. On the other hand, allowing the spread to be a function of $k$, we show that width $O(kΔ)$ can be achieved. This result exploits a connection to chordal completions, which we show is best possible, a result of independent interest.
