Jaeger-type orientations of random regular graphs
We consider $p$-orientations, which are defined to be orientations of $d$-regular graphs such that every vertex either has in-degree $p$ or out-degree $p$. These generalise the orientations considered in Jaeger's conjecture, where $d=4p+1$. Working with random $d$-regular graphs using the small subgraph conditioning method, we prove that a $d$-regular graph has a $p$-orientation with high probability for several values of $(d,p)$, including the $p=3,4$ cases of Jaeger's conjecture (known to be deterministically false). Some negative results are obtained by exploiting a connection with maximum bisection size.
Canonical labelling of random regular graphs
We prove that whenever $d=d(n)\to\infty$ and $n-d\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$, then with high probability for any non-trivial initial colouring, the colour refinement algorithm distinguishes all vertices of the random regular graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,d}$. This, in particular, implies that with high probability $\mathcal{G}_{n,d}$ admits a canonical labelling computable in time $O(\min\{n^ω,nd^2+nd\log n\})$, where $ω<2.372$ is the matrix multiplication exponent.

Sandwiching between random regular graphs and Erdős-Rényi graphs: configuration model and unions of perfect matchings
We establish new couplings among several random graph and multigraph models related to the random regular graph $G(n,d)$, including the configuration model and unions of random perfect matchings. As a main result, we verify the Kim-Vusandwich conjecture for all large degrees $d=n-O(\log^4 n)$ and prove a weakened version for $d=O(\log^4 n)$, which are the only remaining open cases. Our approach introduces a coupling framework that links $G(n,d)$ and $G(n,p)$ through a chain of intermediate models.

Asymptotic enumeration of graph factors by cumulant expansion
Let $G$ be a dense graph with good expansion properties and not too close to being bipartite. Let $\boldsymbol d$ be a graphical degree sequence. Under very weak conditions, we find the number of subgraphs of $G$ with degree sequence $\boldsymbol d$ to arbitrary precision. The average degree can be any power of $n$ and the variation in degrees can be very large. The method uses an explicit bound on the tail of the cumulant generating function found by the first author. As a first application, we prove that there is an asymptotic expansion for the number of regular graphs and find several terms explicitly. We believe that this is the first combinatorial application of the Fourier inversion method for which the integral outside the dominant regions cannot be bounded by the integral of the absolute value, and we give a general method for dealing with that situation.

A tail bound for cumulant series for complex functions of independent random variables
We obtain explicit bounds on the truncation error of the cumulant series of a bounded complex function of a random vector with independent components. The bounds are based on multidimensional differences. This extends the theory of the author with Brendan McKay and Rui-Ray Zhang (J. Combin. Th., Ser. B, 2025) from real functions to complex functions. We demonstrate some initial applications including a Berry--Esseen bound, an Edgeworth expansion for triangles in random graphs, and enumeration of regular graphs.

Correlation between residual entropy and spanning tree entropy of ice-type models on graphs
The logarithm of the number of Eulerian orientations, normalised by the number of vertices, is known as the residual entropy in studies of ice-type models on graphs. The spanning tree entropy depends similarly on the number of spanning trees. We demonstrate and investigate a remarkably strong, though non-deterministic, correlation between these two entropies. This leads us to propose a new heuristic estimate for the residual entropy of regular graphs that performs much better than previous heuristics. We also study the expansion properties and residual entropy of random graphs with given degrees.

On the maximum number of common neighbours in dense random regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive the distribution of the maximum number of common neighbours of a pair of vertices in a dense random regular graph. The proof involves two important steps. One step is to establish the extremal independence property: the asymptotic equivalence with the maximum component of a vector with independent marginal distributions. The other step is to prove that the distribution of the number of common neighbours for each pair of vertices can be approximated by the binomial distribution.

Cumulant expansion for counting Eulerian orientations
An Eulerian orientation is an orientation of the edges of a graph such that every vertex is balanced: its in-degree equals its out-degree. Counting Eulerian orientations corresponds to the crucial partition function in so-called ``ice-type models'' in statistical physics and is known to be hard for general graphs. For all graphs with good expansion properties and degrees larger than $\log^{8} n$, we derive an asymptotic expansion for this count that approximates it to precision $O(n^{-c})$ for arbitrary large $c$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. The proof relies on a new tail bound for the cumulant expansion of the Laplace transform, which is of independent interest.
Sprinkling with random regular graphs
We conjecture that the distribution of the edge-disjoint union of two random regular graphs on the same vertex set is asymptotically equivalent to a random regular graph of the combined degree, provided it grows as the number of vertices tends to infinity. We verify this conjecture for the cases when the graphs are sufficiently dense or sparse. We also prove an asymptotic formula for the expected number of spanning regular subgraphs in a random regular graph.
Decomposing random regular graphs into stars
We study $k$-star decompositions, that is, partitions of the edge set into disjoint stars with $k$ edges, in the uniformly random $d$-regular graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n,d}$. Using the small subgraph conditioning method, we prove an existence result for such decompositions for all $d,k$ such that $d/2 < k \leq d/2 + \max\{1,\frac{1}{6}\log d\}$. More generally, we give a sufficient existence condition that can be checked numerically for any given values of $d$ and $k$. Complementary negative results are obtained using the independence ratio of random regular graphs. Our results establish an existence threshold for $k$-star decompositions in $\mathcal{G}_{n,d}$ for all $d\leq 100$ and $k > d/2$. For smaller values of $k$, the connection between $k$-star decompositions and $β$-orientations allows us to apply results of Thomassen (2012) and Lovász, Thomassen, Wu and Zhang (2013). We prove that random $d$-regular graphs satisfy their assumptions with high probability, thus establishing a.a.s. existence of $k$-star decompositions (i) when $2k^2+k\leq d$, and (ii) when $k$ is odd and $k < d/2$.

On the chromatic number of graphons
We extend Bollobas' classical result on the chromatic number of a binomial random graph to the exchangeable random graph model $\mathcal{G}(n,W)$ defined by a graphon $W:[0,1]^2 \rightarrow [0,1]$, which is a symmetric measurable function. In the case when $W$ can be approximated by block graphons in $\mathcal{L}^{\infty}$-norm, we show that asymptotically optimal value of the number of colours required for $\mathcal{G}(n,W)$ is determined by colouring strategies that use a finite number of different types of colour classes. Furthermore, if $W$ is a block graphon with $k\times k$ blocks then $k$ types of colour classes are sufficient. We also show that if $W$ is block-increasing or block-Lipschitz then such colouring strategies that use $k$ types determine the chromatic number up to a multiplicative error of order $O(k^{-1})$.

On the chromatic number in the stochastic block model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a generalisation of Bollobás' classical result on the asymptotics of the chromatic number of the binomial random graph to the stochastic block model. In addition, by allowing the number of blocks to grow, we determine the chromatic number in the Chung-Lu model. Our approach is based on the estimates for the weighted independence number, where weights are specifically designed to encapsulate inhomogeneities of the random graph.
Degree sequences of sufficiently dense random uniform hypergraphs

We find an asymptotic enumeration formula for the number of simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, when the number of edges is sufficiently large. The formula is given in terms of the solution of a system of equations. We give sufficient conditions on the degree sequence which guarantee existence of a solution to this system. Furthermore, we solve the system and give an explicit asymptotic formula when the degree sequence is close to regular. This allows us to establish several properties of the degree sequence of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph with a given number of edges. More specifically, we compare the degree sequence of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph with a given number edges to certain models involving sequences of binomial or hypergeometric random variables conditioned on their sum.
Extremal independence in discrete random systems

Let $\mathbf{X}(n) \in \mathbb{R}^d$ be a sequence of random vectors, where $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $d = d(n)$. Under certain weakly dependence conditions, we prove that the distribution of the maximal component of $\mathbf{X}$ and the distribution of the maximum of their independent copies are asymptotically equivalent. Our result on extremal independence relies on new lower and upper bounds for the probability that none of a given finite set of events occurs. As applications, we obtain the distribution of various extremal characteristics of random discrete structures such as maximum codegree in binomial random hypergraphs and the maximum number of cliques sharing a given vertex in binomial random graphs. We also generalise Berman-type conditions for a sequence of Gaussian random vectors to possess the extremal independence property.

Kim--Vu's sandwich conjecture is true for $d \gg \log^4 n$
Kim and Vu made the following conjecture (\textit{Advances in Mathematics}, 2004): if $d\gg \log n$, then the random $d$-regular graph $G(n,d)$ can be ``sandwiched'' between $G(n,p_*)$ and $G(n,p^*)$ where $p_*$ and $p^*$ are both asymptotically equal to $d/n$. This famous conjecture was previously proved for all $d\gg (n\log n)^{3/4}$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture when $d \gg \log^4 n$. We also extend this result to near-regular degree sequences.

Spanning trees in random regular uniform hypergraphs

Let $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$ denote a uniformly random $r$-regular $s$-uniform hypergraph on the vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. We establish a threshold result for the existence of a spanning tree in $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$, restricting to $n$ satisfying the necessary divisibility conditions. Specifically, we show that when $s\geq 5$, there is a positive constant $ρ(s)$ such that for any $r\geq 2$, the probability that $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$ contains a spanning tree tends to 1 if $r > ρ(s)$, and otherwise this probability tends to zero. The threshold value $ρ(s)$ grows exponentially with $s$. As $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$ is connected with probability which tends to 1, this implies that when $r \leq ρ(s)$, most $r$-regular $s$-uniform hypergraphs are connected but have no spanning tree. When $s=3,4$ we prove that $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$ contains a spanning tree with probability which tends to 1, for any $r\geq 2$. Our proof also provides the asymptotic distribution of the number of spanning trees in $\mathcal{G}_{n,r,s}$ for all fixed integers $r,s\geq 2$. TPreviously, this asymptotic distribution was only known in the trivial case of 2-regular graphs, or for cubic graphs.

Distribution of tree parameters by martingale approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a uniform random labelled tree, we find the limiting distribution of tree parameters which are stable (in some sense) with respect to local perturbations of the tree structure. The proof is based on the martingale central limit theorem and the Aldous--Broder algorithm. In particular, our general result implies the asymptotic normality of the number of occurrences of any given small pattern and the asymptotic log-normality of the number of automorphisms.

Asymptotic enumeration of orientations of a graph as a function of the out-degree sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of orientations with given out-degree (score) sequence for a graph $G$. The graph $G$ is assumed to have average degrees at least $n^{1/3 + \varepsilon}$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$, and to have strong mixing properties, while the maximum imbalance (out-degree minus in-degree) of the orientation should be not too large. Our enumeration results have applications to the study of subdigraph occurrences in random orientations with given imbalance sequence. As one step of our calculation, we obtain new bounds for the maximum likelihood estimators for the Bradley-Terry model of paired comparisons.

Sandwiching random regular graphs between binomial random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kim and Vu made the following conjecture (\textit{Advances in Mathematics}, 2004): if $d\gg \log n$, then the random $d$-regular graph $\mathcal G(n,d)$ can asymptotically almost surely be "sandwiched" between $\mathcal G(n,p_1)$ and $\mathcal G(n,p_2)$ where $p_1$ and $p_2$ are both $(1+o(1))d/n$. They proved this conjecture for $\log n\ll d\le n^{1/3-o(1)}$, with a defect in the sandwiching: $\mathcal G(n,d)$ contains $\mathcal G(n,p_1)$ perfectly, but is not completely contained in $\mathcal G(n,p_2)$. Recently, the embedding $\mathcal G(n,p_1) \subseteq \mathcal G(n,d)$ was improved by Dudek, Frieze, Ruciński and Šileikis to $d=o(n)$. In this paper, we prove Kim--Vu's sandwich conjecture, with perfect containment on both sides, for all $d\gg n/\sqrt{\log n}$. For $d=O(n/\sqrt{\log n})$, we prove a weaker version of the sandwich conjecture with $p_2$ approximately equal to $(d/n)\log n$, without any defect. In addition to sandwiching regular graphs, our results cover graphs whose degrees are asymptotically equal. The proofs rely on estimates for the probability that a random factor of a pseudorandom graph contains a given edge, which is of independent interest. As applications, we obtain new results on the properties of random graphs with given near-regular degree sequences, including Hamiltonicity and universality in subgraph containment. We also determine several graph parameters in these random graphs, such as the chromatic number, small subgraph counts, the diameter, and the independence number. We are also able to characterise many phase transitions in edge percolation on these random graphs, such as the threshold for the appearance of a giant component.
