Generalized Andrásfai graphs and special Betti diagrams of edge ideals
Edge ideals of graphs were introduced by Villarreal in 1990, and have been the subject of many studies since then. In the same year, Fröberg characterized edge ideals with regularity 2 in combinatorial terms. This result was generalized by Fernández-Ramos and Gimenez to regularity 3 for bipartite graphs. A key ingredient in these results is the particular shape of the Betti diagrams of the edge ideals of the graphs obtained after removing a Hamiltonian cycle from either a complete graph $ K_k$ or a complete bipartite graph $K_{k,k}$. In this work, we consider the family of Generalized Andrásfai graphs ${\rm GA}(t,k)$ with $t\geq 1 $ and $k \geq 2$. This family extends the families of complete graphs, since $K_{k+1} = {\rm GA}(1,k)$, and complete bipartite $k$-regular graphs, since $K_{k,k} = {\rm GA}(2,k)$. We show that the results known for $ K_k$ and $ K_{k,k}$ can be naturally extended to this family. More precisely, when removing a suitable Hamiltonian cycle from ${\rm GA}(t,k)$, the resulting edge ideal has regularity $t+2$, projective dimension $t(k-2)$ and a Betti diagram exhibiting a generalized version of the same special shape.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of toric varieties with at most one singular point
We establish upper bounds for the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the coordinate ring of a simplicial projective toric variety with at most one singular point. In the smooth case, our results recover the bound of Herzog and Hibi [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131 (2003), 2641--2647], and therefore the Eisenbud--Goto bound. Furthermore, when the variety has exactly one singular point and dimension at least $3$, we prove that its regularity also satisfies the Eisenbud--Goto bound. The proof combines combinatorial and homological methods: we study the asymptotic behavior of the sumsets associated to the toric variety and relate it to Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity via a Hochster-like formula.
Symbolic powers of monomial ideals and Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted digraphs

In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds. It is shown that edge ideals of weighted acyclic tournaments are Cohen--Macaulay and satisfy Alexander duality
Pruned cellular free resolutions of monomial ideals

Using discrete Morse theory, we give an algorithm that prunes the excess of information in the Taylor resolution and constructs a new cellular free resolution for an arbitrary monomial ideal. The pruned resolution is not simplicial in general, but we can slightly modify our algorithm in order to obtain a simplicial resolution. We also show that the Lyubeznik resolution fits into our pruning strategy. We finally use our methods to give a different approach to the theory of splitting of monomial ideals.

Regularity 3 in edge ideals associated to bipartite graphs

We focus in this paper on edge ideals associated to bipartite graphs and give a combinatorial characterization of those having regularity 3. When the regularity is strictly bigger than 3, we determine the first step $i$ in the minimal graded free resolution where there exists a minimal generator of degree $>i+3$, show that at this step the highest degree of a minimal generator is $i+4$, and determine the value of the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{i,i+4}$ in terms of the combinatorics of the associated bipartite graph. The results can then be easily extended to the non-squarefree case through polarization. We also study a family of ideals of regularity 4 that play an important role in our main result and whose graded Betti numbers can be completely described through closed combinatorial formulas.

First Nonlinear Syzygies of Ideals Associated to Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider an ideal $I\subset K[x_1,..., x_n]$, with $K$ an arbitrary field, generated by monomials of degree two. Assuming that $I$ does not have a linear resolution, we determine the step $s$ of the minimal graded free resolution of $I$ where nonlinear syzygies first appear, we show that at this step of the resolution nonlinear syzygies are concentrated in degree $s+3$, and we compute the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{s,s+3}$. The multidegrees of these nonlinear syzygies are also determined and the corresponding multigraded Betti numbers are shown to be all equal to 1.
