Cyclotomic exponent sequences of numerical semigroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the cyclotomic exponent sequence of a numerical semigroup $S,$ and we compute its values at the gaps of $S,$ the elements of $S$ with unique representations in terms of minimal generators, and the Betti elements $b\in S$ for which the set $\{a \in \operatorname{Betti}(S) : a \le_{S}b\}$ is totally ordered with respect to $\le_S$ (we write $a \le_S b$ whenever $a - b \in S,$ with $a,b\in S$). This allows us to characterize certain semigroup families, such as Betti-sorted or Betti-divisible numerical semigroups, as well as numerical semigroups with a unique Betti element, in terms of their cyclotomic exponent sequences. Our results also apply to cyclotomic numerical semigroups, which are numerical semigroups with a finitely supported cyclotomic exponent sequence. We show that cyclotomic numerical semigroups with certain cyclotomic exponent sequences are complete intersections, thereby making progress towards proving the conjecture of Ciolan, García-Sánchez and Moree (2016) stating that $S$ is cyclotomic if and only if it is a complete intersection.

Asymptotic performance of metacyclic codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A finite group with a cyclic normal subgroup N such that G/N is cyclic is said to be metacyclic. A code over a finite field F is a metacyclic code if it is a left ideal in the group algebra FG for G a metacyclic group. Metacyclic codes are generalizations of dihedral codes, and can be constructed as quasi-cyclic codes with an extra automorphism. In this paper, we prove that metacyclic codes form an asymptotically good family of codes. Our proof relies on a version of Artin's conjecture for primitive roots in arithmetic progression being true under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH).
Cyclotomic numerical semigroups

Given a numerical semigroup $S$, we let $\mathrm P_S(x)=(1-x)\sum_{s\in S}x^s$ be its semigroup polynomial. We study cyclotomic numerical semigroups; these are numerical semigroups $S$ such that $\mathrm P_S(x)$ has all its roots in the unit disc. We conjecture that $S$ is a cyclotomic numerical semigroup if and only if $S$ is a complete intersection numerical semigroup and present some evidence for it. Aside from the notion of cyclotomic numerical semigroup we introduce the notion of cyclotomic exponents and polynomially related numerical semigroups. We derive some properties and give some applications of these new concepts.

Numerical semigroups, cyclotomic polynomials and Bernoulli numbers
Published in Amer. Math. Monthly 121 (2014), 890--902 • View PublicationBIB
We give two proofs of a folkore result relating numerical semigroups of embedding dimension two and binary cyclotomic polynomials and explore some consequences. In particular, we give a more conceptual reproof of a result of Hong et al. (2012) on gaps between the exponents of non-zero monomials in a binary cyclotomic polynomial. The intent of the author with this expositional paper is to better unify the various results within the cyclotomic polynomial and numerical semigroup communities.

The lengths of Hermitian Self-Dual Extended Duadic Codes
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 209 (2007), 223-237 • View PublicationBIB
Duadic codes are a class of cyclic codes that generalizes quadratic residue codes from prime to composite lengths. For every prime power q, we characterize the integers n such that over the finite field with q^2 elements there is a duadic code of length n having an Hermitian self-dual parity-check extension. We derive using analytic number theory asymptotic estimates for the number of such n as well as for the number of lengths for which duadic codes exist.

Around Pelikan's conjecture on very odd sequences
Published in Manuscripta Mathematica 117 (2005), 219-238 • View PublicationBIB
Very odd sequences were introduced in 1973 by J. Pelikan who conjectured that there were none of length >=5. This conjecture was disproved by MacWilliams and Odlyzko in 1977 who proved there are in fact many very odd sequences. We give connections of these sequences with duadic codes, cyclic difference sets, levels (Stufen) of cyclotomic fields, and derive some new asymptotic results on their lengths and on S(n), which denotes the number of very odd sequences of length n.

The formal series Witt transform
Published in Discrete Mathematics 295 (2005), 143-160 • View PublicationBIB
Given a formal power series f(z) we define, for any positive integer r, its rth Witt transform, W_f^{(r)}, by rW_f^{(r)}(z)=sum_{d|r}mu(d)f(z^d)^{r/d}, where mu is the Moebius function. The Witt transform generalizes the necklace polynomials M(a,n) that occur in the cyclotomic identity 1-ay=prod (1-y^n)^{M(a,n)}, where the product is over all positive integers. Several properties of the Witt transform are established. Some examples relevant to number theory are considered.

Convoluted convolved Fibonacci numbers
Published in J. Integer Seq. 7 (2004), Aricle 04.2.2, pp. 14 (electronic) • Search Publication
The convolved Fibonacci numbers F_j^(r) are defined by (1-z-z^2)^{-r}=\sum_{j>=0}F_{j+1}^(r)z^j. In this note some related numbers that can be expressed in terms of convolved Fibonacci numbers are considered. These numbers appear in the numerical evaluation of a certain number theoretical constant. This note is a case study of the transform {1/n}\sum_{d|n}mu(d)f(z^d)^{n/d}, with f any formal series and mu the Moebius function), which is studied in a companion paper entitled `The formal series Witt transform'.

On a set-theoretic invariant
Published in Acta Math. Univ. Comenianae 74, 2(2005), 199-203 • Search Publication
Let a_1,...,a_m be positive real numbers. Besser and Moree considered weighted numbers of -1,+1 solutions of the linear inequality |a_i-a_j| < e_ka_k < a_i+a_j, with e_k=-1 of 1 and k running over the integers 1,...,m with i and j skipped. They introduced some invariants and near invariants related to this situation (invariant meaning here: not depending on the choice of i and j). The main result of their paper is extended here to a much more general setting, namely that of certain maps from finite sets to {-1,1}. Some applications are given.
