Lecture Notes on "Random Matrices"
This in an introduction to random matrix theory, giving an impression of some of the most important aspects of this modern subject. In particular, it covers the basic combinatorial and analytic theory around Wigner's semicircle law, featuring also concentration phenomena, and the Tracy-Widom distribution of the largest eigenvalue. The circular law and a discussion of Voiculescu's multivariate extension of the semicircle law, as an appetizer for free probability theory, also make an appearance. The material here was presented in the winter term 2019/20 at Saarland University in 24 lectures of 90 minutes each. The lectures were recorded and can be found online at https://www.math.uni-sb.de/ag/speicher/web_video/index.html.

Lecture Notes on "Free Probability Theory"
This in an introduction to free probability theory, covering the basic combinatorial and analytic theory, as well as the relations to random matrices and operator algebras. The material is mainly based on the two books of the lecturer, one joint with Nica and one joint with Mingo. Free probability is here restricted to the scalar-valued setting, the operator-valued version is treated in the subsequent lecture series on "Non-Commutative Distributions". The material here was presented in the winter term 2018/19 at Saarland University in 26 lectures of 90 minutes each. Epsilon-noncrossing partitions and cumulants in free probability
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2018, Issue 23, 2018, 7156-7170 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by recent work on mixtures of classical and free probabilities, we introduce and study the notion of $ε$-noncrossing partitions. It is shown that the set of such partitions forms a lattice, which interpolates as a poset between the poset of partitions and the one of noncrossing partitions. Moreover, $ε$-cumulants are introduced and shown to characterize the notion of $ε$-independence.
The normal distribution is $\boxplus$-infinitely divisible
Published in Adv. Math. 226, Issue 4 (2011), 3677-3698 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the classical normal distribution is infinitely divisible with respect to the free additive convolution. We study the Voiculescu transform first by giving a survey of its combinatorial implications and then analytically, including a proof of free infinite divisibility. In fact we prove that a subfamily Askey-Wimp-Kerov distributions are freely infinitely divisible, of which the normal distribution is a special case. At the time of this writing this is only the third example known to us of a nontrivial distribution that is infinitely divisible with respect to both classical and free convolution, the others being the Cauchy distribution and the free 1/2-stable distribution.

Sharp Bounds for Sums Associated to Graphs of Matrices
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 262 (2012), no. 5, 2272-2288 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a simple algorithm for finding the optimal upper bound for sums of products of matrix entries of the form S_pi(N) := sum_{j_1, ..., j_2m = 1}^N t^1_{j_1 j_2} t^2_{j_3 j_4} ... t^m_{j_2m-1 j_2m} where some of the summation indices are constrained to be equal. The upper bound is easily obtained from a graph G associated to the constraints in the sum.
The Non-Commutative Cycle Lemma
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 117 (2010), no. 8, 1158-1166 • View PublicationBIB
We present a non-commutative version of the cycle lemma of Dvoretsky and Motzkin that applies to free groups and use this result to solve a number of problems involving cyclic reduction in the free group. We also describe an application to random matrices, in particular the fluctuations of Kesten's Law.

Strong Haagerup inequalities for free R-diagonal elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we generalize Haagerup's inequality (on convolution norm in the free group) to a very general context of R-diagonal elements in a tracial von Neumann algebra; moreover, we show that in this "holomorphic" setting, the inequality is greatly improved from its originial form. We give an elementary combinatorial proof of a very special case of our main result, and then generalize these techniques. En route, we prove a number of moment and cumulant estimates for R-diagonal elements that are of independent interest. Finally, we use our strong Haagerup inequality to prove a strong ultracontractivity theorem.

Free Calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
I give a survey about my work on combinatorial and probabilistic aspects of free probability theory. In particular, I present the combinatorial description of freeness in terms of free cumulants and I give some ideas of the main results of my joint work with Philippe Biane on a stochastic integration theory for free Brownian motion.

Combinatorics of free cumulants
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a formula for expressing free cumulants whose entries are products of random variables in terms of the lattice structure of non-crossing partitions. We show the usefulness of that result by giving direct and conceptually simple proofs for a lot of results about $R$-diagonal elements. Our investigations do not assume the trace property for the considered linear functionals.
