The Exponential Lie Series and a Chen-Strichartz Formula for Levy Processes
In this paper, we derive a Chen-Strichartz formula for stochastic differential equations driven by Levy processes, that is, we derive a series expansion of the logarithm of the flowmap of the stochastic differential equation in terms of commutators of vector fields with stochastic coefficients, and we provide an explicit formula for the components in this series. The stochastic components are generated by the Levy processes that drive the stochastic differential equation and their quadratic variation and power jumps; the vector fields are given as linear combinations of commutators of elements in the pre-Lie Magnus expansion generated by the original vector fields governing our stochastic differential equation. In particular, we show the logarithm of the flowmap is a Lie series. These results extend previous results for deterministic differential equations and continuous stochastic differential equations. For these, the Chen-Strichartz series has shown to play a pivotal role in the design of numerical integration schemes that preserve qualitative properties of the solution such as the construction of geometric numerical schemes and in the context of efficient numerical schemes.
Noncrossing arithmetic
Higher-order notions of Kreweras complementation have appeared in the literature in the works of Krawczyk, Speicher, Mastnak, Nica, Arizmendi, Vargas, and others. While the theory has been developed primarily for specific applications in free probability, it also possesses an elegant, purely combinatorial core that is of independent interest. The present article aims at offering a simple account of various aspects of higher-order Kreweras complementation on the basis of elementary arithmetic, (co)algebraic, categorical and simplicial properties of noncrossing partitions. The main idea is to consider noncrossing partitions as providing an interesting noncommutative analogue of the interplay between the divisibility poset and the multiplicative monoid of positive integers. Just as the divisibility poset can be regarded as the decalage of the multiplicative monoid, we exhibit the lattice of noncrossing partitions as the decalage of a partial monoid structure on noncrossing partitions encoding higher-order Kreweras complements. While our results may be considered familiar, several of the viewpoints can be regarded as novel, offering an efficient approach both conceptually and computationally.

In this work we study conditional monotone cumulants and additive convolution in the shuffle-algebraic approach to non-commutative probability. We describe c-monotone cumulants as an infinitesimal character and identify the c-monotone additive convolution as an associative operation in the set of pairs of characters in the dual of a double tensor Hopf algebra. In this algebraic framework, we understand previous results on c-monotone cumulants and prove a combinatorial formula that relates c-free and c-monotone cumulants. We also identify the notion of $t$-Boolean cumulants in the shuffle-algebraic approach and introduce the corresponding notion of $t$-monotone cumulants as a particular case of c-monotone cumulants.

Consider an input-output system where the output is the tracking error given some desired reference signal. It is natural to consider under what conditions the problem has an exact solution, that is, the tracking error is exactly the zero function. If the system has a well defined relative degree and the zero function is in the range of the input-output map, then it is well known that the system is locally left invertible, and thus, the problem has a unique exact solution. A system will fail to have relative degree when more than one exact solution exists. The general goal of this paper is to describe a decomposition of an input-output system having a Chen-Fliess series representation into a parallel product of subsystems in order to identify possible solutions to the problem of zeroing the output. For computational purposes, the focus is on systems whose generating series are polynomials. It is shown that the shuffle algebra on the set of generating polynomials is a unique factorization domain so that any polynomial can be uniquely factored modulo a permutation into its irreducible elements for the purpose of identifying the subsystems in a parallel product decomposition. This is achieved using the fact that this shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the symmetric algebra over the vector space spanned by Lyndon words. A specific algorithm for factoring generating polynomials into its irreducible factors is presented based on the Chen-Fox-Lyndon factorization of words.

Recent works have explored relations between classical and quantum statistical physics on the one hand and Voiculescu's theory of free probability on the other. Motivated by these results, the present work focuses on the notion of effective action, which is closely related to the large deviation rate function in classical probability and one-particle irreducible correlation functions in quantum field theories. The central aim is to understand how it can be defined and studied in free probability. In this respect, we introduce a suitable diagrammatic formalism.
Tubings, chord diagrams, and Dyson--Schwinger equations
We give series solutions to single insertion place propagator-type systems of Dyson--Schwinger equations using binary tubings of rooted trees. These solutions are combinatorially transparent in the sense that each tubing has a straightforward contribution. The Dyson--Schwinger equations solved here are more general than those previously solved by chord diagram techniques, including systems and non-integer values of the insertion parameter $s$. We remark on interesting combinatorial connections and properties.

We consider the bialgebra of hypergraphs, a generalization of Schmitt's Hopf algebra of graphs, and show it has a cointeracting bialgebra. So one has a double bialgebra in the sense of L. Foissy, who recently proved there is then a unique double bialgebra morphism to the double bialgebra structure on the polynomial ring ${\mathbb Q}[x]$. We show the polynomial associated to a hypergraph is the hypergraph chromatic polynomial.
Moreover hypergraphs occurs in quartets: there is a dual, a complement, and a dual complement hypergraph. These correspondences are involutions and give rise to three other double bialgebras, and three more chromatic polynomials. In all we give eight quartets of bialgebras which includes recent bialgebras of M. Aguiar and F. Ardila, and by L. Foissy.

This article approaches the counting of subgraphs, in terms of signature-type functionals defined over combinatorial Hopf algebras of graphs. Well-known algebraic identities that arise in the context of counting subgraphs are then captured by their character property and a type of "Chen's identity". While different notions of subgraphs (and homomorphisms) correspond to different combinatorial Hopf algebras on graphs, we will show that they are all isomorphic to a polynomial Hopf algebra. In addition, the isomorphy between the Hopf algebras can be realized by maps that respect the counting operations.

We consider the group $(\mathcal{G},*)$ of unitized multiplicative functions in the incidence algebra of non-crossing partitions, where ``$*$'' denotes the convolution operation. We introduce a larger group $(\widetilde{\mathcal{G}},*)$ of unitized functions from the same incidence algebra, which satisfy a weaker condition of being ``semi-multiplicative''. The natural action of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ on sequences of multilinear functionals of a non-commutative probability space captures the combinatorics of transitions between moments and some brands of cumulants that are studied in the non-commutative probability literature. We use the framework of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ in order to explain why the multiplication of free random variables can be very nicely described in terms of Boolean cumulants and more generally in terms of $t$-Boolean cumulants, a one-parameter interpolation between free and Boolean cumulants arising from work of Bozejko and Wysoczanski.
It is known that the group $\mathcal{G}$ can be naturally identified as the group of characters of the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ can also be identified as group of characters of a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{T}$, which is an incidence Hopf algebra in the sense of Schmitt. Moreover, the inclusion of $\mathcal{G}$ into $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ turns out to be the dual of a natural bialgebra homomorphism from $\mathcal{T}$ onto Sym.

Boolean, free and monotone cumulants as well as relations among them, have proven to be important in the study of non-commutative probability theory. Quite notably, Boolean cumulants were successfully used to study free infinite divisibility via the Boolean Bercovici--Pata bijection. On the other hand, in recent years the concept of infinitesimal non-commutative probability has been developed, together with the notion of infinitesimal cumulants which can be useful in the context of combinatorial questions.
In this paper, we show that the known relations among free, Boolean and monotone cumulants still hold in the infinitesimal framework. Our approach is based on the use of Grassmann algebra. Formulas involving infinitesimal cumulants can be obtained by applying a formal derivation to known formulas.
The relations between the various types of cumulants turn out to be captured via the shuffle algebra approach to moment-cumulant relations in non-commutative probability theory. In this formulation, (free, Boolean and monotone) cumulants are represented as elements of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter consists of the graded connected double tensor algebra defined over a non-commutative probability space and is neither commutative nor cocommutative. In this note it is shown how the shuffle algebra approach naturally extends to the notion of infinitesimal non-commutative probability space. The basic step consists in replacing the base field as target space of linear Hopf algebra maps by the Grassmann algebra over the base field. We also consider the infinitesimal analog of the Boolean Bercovici--Pata map.

We establish and explore a relationship between two approaches to moment-cumulant relations in free probability theory: on one side the main approach, due to Speicher, given in terms of Möbius inversion on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, and on the other side the more recent non-commutative shuffle-algebra approach, where the moment-cumulant relations take the form of certain exponential-logarithm relations. We achieve this by exhibiting two operad structures on (noncrossing) partitions, different in nature: one is an ordinary, non-symmetric operad whose composition law is given by insertion into gaps between elements, the other is a coloured, symmetric operad with composition law expressing refinement of blocks. We show that these operad structures interact so as to make the corresponding incidence bialgebra of the former a comodule bialgebra for the latter. Furthermore, this interaction is compatible with the shuffle structure and thus unveils how the two approaches are intertwined. Moreover, the constructions and results are general enough to extend to ordinary set partitions.

A detailed expose of the Hopf algebra approach to interconnected input-output systems in nonlinear control theory is presented. The focus is on input-output systems that can been represented in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators. This provides a starting point for a discrete-time version of this theory. In particular, the notion of a discrete-time Fliess operator is given and a class of parallel interconnections is described.

The theory of cumulants is revisited in the "Rota way", that is, by following a combinatorial Hopf algebra approach. Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants are considered as infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter is neither commutative nor cocommutative, and has an underlying unshuffle bialgebra structure which gives rise to a shuffle product on its graded dual. The moment-cumulant relations are encoded in terms of shuffle and half-shuffle exponentials. It is then shown how to express concisely monotone, free, and boolean cumulants in terms of each other using the pre-Lie Magnus expansion together with shuffle and half-shuffle logarithms.

Motivated by recent work on mixtures of classical and free probabilities, we introduce and study the notion of $ε$-noncrossing partitions. It is shown that the set of such partitions forms a lattice, which interpolates as a poset between the poset of partitions and the one of noncrossing partitions. Moreover, $ε$-cumulants are introduced and shown to characterize the notion of $ε$-independence.

Hoffman's quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra, with deconcatenation coproduct, is a comodule-Hopf algebra over the bialgebra thus defined. The relation with J. Ecalle's mould calculus, i.e. mould composition and contracting arborification, is precised.

The aim of this work is to outline in some detail the use of combinatorial algebra in planar quantum field theory. Particular emphasis is given to the relations between the different types of planar Green's functions. The key object is a Hopf algebra which is naturally defined on non-commuting sources, and the fact that its genuine unshuffle coproduct splits into left- and right unshuffle half-coproduts. The latter give rise to the notion of unshuffle bialgebra. This setting allows to describe the relation between planar full and connected Green's functions by solving a simple linear fixed point equation. A modification of this linear fixed point equation gives rise to the relation between planar connected and one-particle irreducible Green's functions. The graphical calculus that arises from this approach also leads to a new understanding of functional calculus in planar QFT, whose rules for differentiation with respect to non-commuting sources can be translated into the language of growth operations on planar rooted trees. We also include a brief outline of our approach in the framework of non-planar theories.

A combinatorial interpretation is given of Devlin's word problem underlying the classical center-focus problem of Poincare for non-autonomous differential equations. It turns out that the canonical polynomials of Devlin are from the point of view of connected graded Hopf algebras intimately related to the graded components of a Hopf algebra antipode applied to the formal power series of Ferfera. The link is made by passing through control theory since the Abel equation, which describes a center, is equivalent to an output feedback equation, and the Hopf algebra of output feedback is derived from the composition of iterated integrals rather than just the products of iterated integrals, which yields the shuffle algebra. This means that the primary algebraic structure at play in Devlin's approach is actually not the shuffle algebra, but a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra, which is defined in terms of the shuffle product but is a distinct algebraic structure.

For stochastic systems driven by continuous semimartingales an explicit formula for the logarithm of the Ito flow map is given. A similar formula is also obtained for solutions of linear matrix-valued SDEs driven by arbitrary semimartingales. The computation relies on the lift to quasi-shuffle algebras of formulas involving products of Ito integrals of semimartingales. Whereas the Chen-Strichartz formula computing the logarithm of the Stratonovich flow map is classically expanded as a formal sum indexed by permutations, the analogous formula in Ito calculus is naturally indexed by surjections. This reflects the change of algebraic background involved in the transition between the two integration theories.

Free cumulants were introduced by Speicher as a proper analog of classical cumulants in Voiculescu's theory of free probability. The relation between free moments and free cumulants is usually described in terms of Moebius calculus over the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this work we explore another approach to free cumulants and to their combinatorial study using a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of non-crossing partitions. The generating series of free moments is seen as a character on this Hopf algebra. It is characterized by solving a linear fixed point equation that relates it to the generating series of free cumulants. These phenomena are explained through a process similar to (though different from) the arborification process familiar in the theory of dynamical systems, and originating in Cayley's work.
