The general goal of this paper is to identify a transformation group that can be used to describe a class of feedback interconnections involving subsystems which are modeled solely in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators and are independent of the existence of any state space models. This interconnection, called an output affine feedback connection, is distinguished from conventional output feedback by the presence of a multiplier in an outer loop. Once this transformation group is established, three basic questions are addressed. How can this transformation group be used to provide an explicit Fliess operator representation of such a closed-loop system? Is it possible to use this feedback scheme to do system inversion purely in an input-output setting? In particular, can feedback input-output linearization be posed and solved entirely in this framework, i.e., without the need for any state space realization? Lastly, what can be said about feedback invariants under this transformation group? A final objective of the paper is to describe the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters associated with the group in terms of a pre-Lie product.

Free cumulants were introduced as the proper analog of classical cumulants in the theory of free probability. There is a mix of similarities and differences, when one considers the two families of cumulants. Whereas the combinatorics of classical cumulants is well expressed in terms of set partitions, the one of free cumulants is described, and often introduced in terms of non-crossing set partitions. The formal series approach to classical and free cumulants also largely differ. It is the purpose of the present article to put forward a different approach to these phenomena. Namely, we show that cumulants, whether classical or free, can be understood in terms of the algebra and combinatorics underlying commutative as well as non-commutative (half-)shuffles and (half-)unshuffles. As a corollary, cumulants and free cumulants can be characterized through linear fixed point equations. We study the exponential solutions of these linear fixed point equations, which display well the commutative, respectively non-commutative, character of classical, respectively free, cumulants.

This paper provides a dendriform-tree setting for Fliess operators with matrix-valued inputs. This class of analytic nonlinear input-output systems is convenient, for example, in quantum control. In particular, a description of such Fliess operators is provided using planar binary trees. Sufficient conditions for convergence of the defining series are also given.

In this work a combinatorial description is provided of a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra which naturally appears in the context of Fliess operators in nonlinear feedback control theory. It is a connected graded commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebra defined on rooted circle trees. A cancellation free forest formula for its antipode is given.

Bell polynomials appear in several combinatorial constructions throughout mathematics. Perhaps most naturally in the combinatorics of set partitions, but also when studying compositions of diffeomorphisms on vector spaces and manifolds, and in the study of cumulants and moments in probability theory. We construct commutative and noncommutative Bell polynomials and explain how they give rise to Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras. We use the language of incidence Hopf algebras, and along the way provide a new description of antipodes in noncommutative incidence Hopf algebras, involving quasideterminants. We also discuss Möbius inversion in certain Hopf algebras built from Bell polynomials.

The notion of trees plays an important role in Butcher's B-series. More recently, a refined understanding of algebraic and combinatorial structures underlying the Magnus expansion has emerged thanks to the use of rooted trees. We follow these ideas by further developing the observation that the logarithm of the solution of a lihear first-order finite-difference equation can be written in terms of the Magnus expansion taking place in a pre-Lie algebra. By using basic combinatorics on planar reduced trees we derive a closed formula for the Magnus expansion in the context of free tridendriform algebra. The tridendriform algebra structure on word quasi-symmetric functions permits us to derive a discrete analogue of the Mielnik-Plebanski-Strichartz formula for this logarithm.
Rota-Baxter Algebra. The Combinatorial Structure of Integral Calculus
Gian-Carlo Rota suggested in one of his last articles the problem of developing a theory around the notion of integration algebras, complementary to the already existing theory of differential algebras. This idea was mainly motivated by Rota's deep appreciation for Kuo-Tsai Chen's seminal work on iterated integrals. As a starting point for such a theory of integration algebras Rota proposed to consider a particular operator identity first introduced by the mathematician Glen Baxter. Later it was coined Rota-Baxter identity. In this article we briefly recall basic properties of Rota--Baxter algebras, and present a concise review of recent work with a particular emphasis of noncommutative aspects.
Time-ordering and a generalized Magnus expansion

Both the classical time-ordering and the Magnus expansion are well-known in the context of linear initial value problems. Motivated by the noncommutativity between time-ordering and time derivation, and related problems raised recently in statistical physics, we introduce a generalization of the Magnus expansion. Whereas the classical expansion computes the logarithm of the evolution operator of a linear differential equation, our generalization addresses the same problem, including however directly a non-trivial initial condition. As a by-product we recover a variant of the time ordering operation, known as T*-ordering. Eventually, placing our results in the general context of Rota-Baxter algebras permits us to present them in a more natural algebraic setting. It encompasses, for example, the case where one considers linear difference equations instead of linear differential equations.
The Magnus expansion, trees and Knuth's rotation correspondence

W. Magnus introduced a particular differential equation characterizing the logarithm of the solution of linear initial value problems for linear operators. The recursive solution of this differential equation leads to a peculiar Lie series, which is known as Magnus expansion, and involves Bernoulli numbers, iterated Lie brackets and integrals. This paper aims at obtaining further insights into the fine structure of the Magnus expansion. By using basic combinatorics on planar rooted trees we prove a closed formula for the Magnus expansion in the context of free dendriform algebra. From this, by using a well-known dendriform algebra structure on the vector space generated by the disjoint union of the symmetric groups, we derive the Mielnik-Plebański-Strichartz formula for the continuous Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series.

We present a bijection from planar reduced trees to planar rooted hypertrees, which extends Knuth's rotation correspondence between planar binary trees and planar rooted trees. The operadic counterpart of the new bijection is explained. Related to this, the space of planar reduced forests is endowed with a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure. The corresponding structure on the space of planar rooted hyperforests is also described.

In this paper an application of the recently introduced pre-Lie Magnus expansion to Jackson's q-integral and q-exponentials is presented. Twisted dendriform algebras, which are the natural algebraic framework for Jackson's q-analogues, are introduced for that purpose. It is shown how the pre-Lie Magnus expansion is used to solve linear q-differential equations. We also briefly outline the theory of linear equations in twisted dendriform algebras.

Hopf algebra structures on rooted trees are by now a well-studied object, especially in the context of combinatorics. In this work we consider a Hopf algebra H by introducing a coproduct on a (commutative) algebra of rooted forests, considering each tree of the forest (which must contain at least one edge) as a Feynman-like graph without loops. The primitive part of the graded dual is endowed with a pre-Lie product defined in terms of insertion of a tree inside another. We establish a surprising link between the Hopf algebra H obtained this way and the well-known Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees by means of a natural H-bicomodule structure on the latter. This enables us to recover recent results in the field of numerical methods for differential equations due to Chartier, Hairer and Vilmart as well as Murua.

We investigate solutions for a particular class of linear equations in dendriform algebras. Motivations as well as several applications are provided. The latter follow naturally from the intimate link between dendriform algebras and Rota-Baxter operators, e.g. the Riemann integral or Jackson's q-integral.
A Zassenhaus-type algorithm solves the Bogoliubov recursion
This paper introduces a new Lie-theoretic approach to the computation of counterterms in perturbative renormalization. Contrary to the usual approach, the devised version of the Bogoliubov recursion does not follow a linear induction on the number of loops. It is well-behaved with respect to the Connes-Kreimer approach: that is, the recursion takes place inside the group of Hopf algebra characters with values in regularized Feynman amplitudes. (Paradigmatically, we use dimensional regularization in the minimal subtraction scheme, although our procedure is generalizable to other schemes.) The new method is related to Zassenhaus' approach to the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula for computing products of exponentials. The decomposition of counterterms is parametrized by a family of Lie idempotents known as the Zassenhaus idempotents. It is shown, inter alia, that the corresponding Feynman rules generate the same algebra as the graded components of the Connes-Kreimer beta-function. This further extends previous work of ours (together with Jose M. Gracia-Bondia) on the connection between Lie idempotents and renormalization procedures, where we constructed the Connes-Kreimer beta-function by means of the classical Dynkin idempotent.

We describe various combinatorial aspects of the Birkhoff-Connes-Kreimer factorization in perturbative renormalisation. The analog of Bogoliubov's preparation map on the Lie algebra of Feynman graphs is identified with the pre-Lie Magnus expansion. Our results apply to any connected filtered Hopf algebra, based on the pro-nilpotency of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters.

We provide a refined approach to the classical Magnus and Fer expansion, unveiling a new structure by using the language of dendriform and pre-Lie algebras. The recursive formula for the logarithm of the solutions of the equations X=1+ta<X and Y=1-tY> a in A[[t]] is provided, where (A,<,>) is a dendriform algebra. Then, we present the solutions to these equations as an infinite product expansion of exponentials. Both formulae involve the pre-Lie product naturally associated with the dendriform structure. Several applications are presented.

Dendriform structures arise naturally in algebraic combinatorics (where they allow, for example, the splitting of the shuffle product into two pieces) and through Rota-Baxter algebra structures (the latter appear, among others, in differential systems and in the renormalization process of pQFT). We prove new combinatorial identities in dendriform dialgebras that appear to be strongly related to classical phenomena, such as the combinatorics of Lyndon words, rewriting rules in Lie algebras, or the fine structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. One of these identities is an abstract noncommutative, dendriform, generalization of the Bohnenblust-Spitzer identity and of an identity involving iterated Chen integrals due to C.S. Lam.

The Bogoliubov recursion is a particular procedure appearing in the process of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. It provides convergent expressions for otherwise divergent integrals. We develop here a theory of functional identities for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras which is shown to encode, among others, this process in the context of Connes-Kreimer's Hopf algebra of renormalization. Our results generalize the seminal Cartier-Rota theory of classical Spitzer-type identities for commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. In the classical, commutative, case, these identities can be understood as deriving from the theory of symmetric functions. Here, we show that an analogous property holds for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras. That is, we show that functional identities in the noncommutative setting can be derived from the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions. Lie idempotents, and particularly the Dynkin idempotent play a crucial role in the process. Their action on the pro-unipotent groups such as those of perturbative renormalization is described in detail along the way.
