On the complexity of finding tensor ranks
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to give a linear algebra algorithm to find out if a rank of a given tensor over a field $\F$ is at most $k$ over the algebraic closure of $\F$, where $k$ is a given positive integer. We estimate the arithmetic complexity of our algorithm.

Nonnegativity for hafnians of certain matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that a complex symmetric matrix of the form $A(Y,B) = \begin{bmatrix}Y & B\\ B^\top & \overline{Y} \end{bmatrix},$ where $B$ is Hermitian positive semidefinite, has a nonnegative hafnian. These are positive scalar multiples of matrices $A(Y,B)$ that are encodable in a Gaussian boson sampler. Further, the hafnian of this matrix is non-decreasing in $B$ in the sense that $\mathrm{haf}A(Y,L) \ge \mathrm{haf}A(Y,B)$ if $L \succeq B$.
Graph isomorphism and Gaussian boson sampling
Published in Spec. Matrices 9 (2021), 166-196 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a connection between a near-term quantum computing device, specifically a Gaussian boson sampler, and the graph isomorphism problem. We propose a scheme where graphs are encoded into quantum states of light, whose properties are then probed with photon-number-resolving detectors. We prove that the probabilities of different photon-detection events in this setup can be combined to give a complete set of graph invariants. Two graphs are isomorphic if and only if their detection probabilities are equivalent. We present additional ways that the measurement probabilities can be combined or coarse-grained to make experimental tests more amenable. We benchmark these methods with numerical simulations on the Titan supercomputer for several graph families: pairs of isospectral nonisomorphic graphs, isospectral regular graphs, and strongly regular graphs.

The tensor rank of tensor product of two three-qubit W states is eight
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the tensor rank of tensor product of two three-qubit W states is not less than eight. Combining this result with the recent result of M. Christandl, A. K. Jensen, and J. Zuiddam that the tensor rank of tensor product of two three-qubit W states is at most eight, we deduce that the tensor rank of tensor product of two three-qubit W states is eight. We also construct the upper bound of the tensor rank of tensor product of many three-qubit W states.

Upper bounds for perfect matchings in pfaffian and planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give upper bounds on weighted perfect matchings in pfaffian graphs. These upper bounds are better than Bregman's upper bounds on the number of perfect matchings. We show that some of our upper bounds are sharp for 3 and 4-regular pfaffian graphs. We apply our results to fullerene graphs.

Results and open problems in matchings in regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This survey paper deals with upper and lower bounds on the number of $k$-matchings in regular graphs on $N$ vertices. For the upper bounds we recall the upper matching conjecture which is known to hold for perfect matchings. For the lower bounds we first survey the known results for bipartite graphs, and their continuous versions as the van der Waerden and Tverberg permanent conjectures and its variants. We then discuss non-bipartite graphs. Little is known beyond the recent proof of the Lovász-Plummer conjecture on the exponential growth of perfect matchings in cubic bridgeless graphs. We discuss the problem of the minimum of haffnians on the convex set of matrices, whose extreme points are the adjacency matrices of subgraphs of the complete graph corresponding to perfect matchings. We also consider infinite regular graphs. The analog of $k$-matching is the $p$-monomer entropy, where $p\in [0,1]$ is the density of the number of matchings.

Analogs of the van der Waerden and Tverberg conjectures for haffnians
We discuss here analogs of van der Waerden and Tverberg permanent conjectures for haffnians on the convex set of matrices whose extreme points are symmetric permutation matrices with zero diagonal.

An Asymptotic Expansion and Recursive Inequalities for the Monomer-Dimer Problem
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics: Volume 143, Issue 2 (2011), p. 306 • View PublicationBIB
Let (lambda_d)(p) be the p monomer-dimer entropy on the d-dimensional integer lattice Z^d, where p in [0,1] is the dimer density. We give upper and lower bounds for (lambda_d)(p) in terms of expressions involving (lambda_(d-1))(q). The upper bound is based on a conjecture claiming that the p monomer-dimer entropy of an infinite subset of Z^d is bounded above by (lambda_d)(p). We compute the first three terms in the formal asymptotic expansion of (lambda_d)(p) in powers of 1/d. We prove that the lower asymptotic matching conjecture is satisfied for (lambda_d)(p).

On the minimum rank of a graph over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we deal with two aspects of the minimum rank of a simple undirected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices over a finite field $\FF_q$ with $q$ elements, which is denoted by $\mr(\FF_q,G)$. In the first part of this paper we show that the average minimum rank of simple undirected labeled graphs on $n$ vertices over $\FF_2$ is $(1-\varepsilon_n)n$, were $\lim_{n\to\infty} \varepsilon_n=0$. In the second part of this paper we assume that $G$ contains a clique $K_k$ on $k$-vertices. We show that if $q$ is not a prime then $\mr(\FF_q,G)\le n-k+1$ for $4\le k\le n-1$ and $n\ge 5$. It is known that $\mr(\FF_q,G)\le 3$ for $k=n-2$, $n\ge 4$ and $q\ge 4$. We show that for $k=n-2$ and each $n\ge 10$ there exists a graph $G$ such that $\mr(\FF_3,G)>3$. For $k=n-3$, $n\ge 5$ and $q\ge 4$ we show that $\mr(\FF_q,G)\le 4$.
On the First Eigenvalue of Bipartite Graphs

In this paper we study the maximum value of the largest eigenvalue for simple bipartite graphs, where the number of edges is given and the number of vertices on each side of the bipartition is given. We state a conjectured solution, which is an analog of the Brualdi- Hoffman conjecture for general graphs, and prove the conjecture in some special cases.

The maximum number of perfect matchings in graphs with a given degree sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the number of perfect matching in a simple graph $G$ with an even number of vertices and degree sequence $d_1,d_2, ..., d_n$ is at most $\prod_{i=1}^n (d_i !)^{\frac{1}{2d_i}}$. This bound is sharp if and only if $G$ is a union of complete balanced bipartite graphs.

An upper bound for the number of perfect matchings in graphs
We give an upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in an undirected simple graph $G$ with an even number of vertices, in terms of the degrees of all the vertices in $G$. This bound is sharp if $G$ is a union of complete bipartite graphs. This bound is a generalization of the upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in bipartite graphs on $n+n$ vertices given by the Bregman-Minc inequality for the permanents of $(0,1)$ matrices.

Generalized Friedland-Tverberg inequality: applications and extensions
We derive here the Friedland-Tverberg inequality for positive hyperbolic polynomials. This inequality is applied to give lower bounds for the number of matchings in $r$-regular bipartite graphs. It is shown that some of these bounds are asymptotically sharp. We improve the known lower bound for the three dimensional monomer-dimer entropy. We present Ryser-like formulas for computations of matchings in bipartite and general graphs. Additional algorithmic applications are given.
Validations of the Asymptotic Matching Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we review the asymptotic matching conjectures for $r$-regular bipartite graphs, and their connections in estimating the monomer-dimer entropies in $d$-dimensional integer lattice and Bethe lattices. We prove new rigorous upper and lower bounds for the monomer-dimer entropies, which support these conjectures. We describe a general construction of infinite families of $r$-regular tori graphs and give algorithms for computing the monomer-dimer entropy of density $p$, for any $p\in [0,1]$, for these graphs. Finally we use tori graphs to test the asymptotic matching conjectures for certain infinite $r$-regular bipartite graphs.

Exact conditions for countable inclusion-exclusion identity and extensions
We give simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the inclusion-exclusion identity to hold for an infinite countable number of sets. In terms of a random variable, whose range are nonnegative integers, this condition is equivalent to the convergence to zero of binomial moments. Some standard extensions of the countable inclusion-exclusion identity are also given.

2-adic valuations of certain ratios of products of factorials and applications

We prove the conjecture of Falikman--Friedland--Loewy on the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex symmetric matrices of rank at most $k$. We also characterize the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex skew symmetric matrices of rank at most $2p$. We give recursive relations which determine the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $m\times n$ complex matrices of rank at most $k$. In the case the degrees of these varieties are odd, we characterize the minimal dimensions of subspaces of $n\times n$ skew symmetric real matrices and of $m\times n$ real matrices containing a nonzero matrix of rank at most $k$. The parity questions studied here are also of combinatorial interest since they concern the parity of the number of plane partitions contained in a given box, on the one hand, and the parity of the number of symplectic tableaux of rectangular shape, on the other hand.

Theory of Computation of Multidimensional Entropy with an Application to the Monomer-Dimer Problem

We outline the most recent theory for the computation of the exponential growth rate of the number of configurations on a multi-dimensional grid. As an application we compute the monomer-dimer constant for the 2-dimensional grid to 8 decimal digits, agreeing with the heuristic computations of Baxter, and for the 3-dimensional grid with an error smaller than 1.35%.
