On a conjecture of Las Vergnas
In 1988, Las Vergnas conjectured that if $M$ is a binary matroid with bicycle dimension $d$, then for $0 \leq k \leq d$, the $k$th derivative of the diagonal Tutte polynomial $T(M;z,z)$ evaluated at $z=-1$ is an integer multiple of $2^{d-k}$. While this was rapidly disproved for binary matroids and for graphs in general, extensive computations strongly suggested that it might be true for planar graphs. In this paper we prove that this is indeed the case. To do this, we consider a stronger divisibility property that we call the LV property, and a larger class of graphs, namely the class of delta-wye-reducible graphs. By a detailed analysis of how a delta-wye exchange affects the coefficients of the diagonal Tutte polynomial, we show that delta-wye-reducible graphs have the LV property. That Las Vergnas' conjecture holds for planar graphs immediately follows because planar graphs are delta-wye reducible and the LV property is stronger than Las Vergnas' divisibility conditions.

The complexity of solution-free sets of integers
Given a linear equation L, a set A of integers is L-free if A does not contain any non-trivial solutions to L. Meeks and Treglown showed that for certain kinds of linear equations, it is NP-complete to decide if a given set of integers contains a solution-free subset of a given size. Also, for equations involving three variables, they showed that the problem of determining the size of the largest solution-free subset is APX-hard, and that for two such equations (representing sum-free and progression-free sets), the problem of deciding if there is a solution-free subset with at least a specified proportion of the elements is also NP-complete. We answer a number of questions posed by Meeks and Treglown, by extending the results above to all linear equations, and showing that the problems remain hard for sets of integers whose elements are polynomially bounded in the size of the set. For most of these results, the integers can all be positive as long as the coefficients do not all have the same sign. We also consider the problem of counting the number of solution-free subsets of a given set, and show that this problem is #P-complete for any linear equation in at least three variables.

Inductive tools for connected ribbon graphs, delta-matroids and multimatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a splitter theorem for tight multimatroids, generalizing the corresponding result for matroids, obtained independently by Brylawski and Seymour. Further corollaries give splitter theorems for delta-matroids and ribbon graphs.

We give upper and lower bounds on the number of delta-matroids, and on the number of even delta-matroids.
On the interplay between embedded graphs and delta-matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The mutually enriching relationship between graphs and matroids has motivated discoveries in both fields. In this paper, we exploit the similar relationship between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. There are well-known connections between geometric duals of plane graphs and duals of matroids. We obtain analogous connections for various types of duality in the literature for graphs in surfaces of higher genus and delta-matroids. Using this interplay, we establish a rough structure theorem for delta-matroids that are twists of matroids, we translate Petrie duality on ribbon graphs to loop complementation on delta-matroids, and we prove that ribbon graph polynomials, such as the Penrose polynomial, the characteristic polynomial, and the transition polynomial, are in fact delta-matroidal. We also express the Penrose polynomial as a sum of characteristic polynomials.
Matroids, Delta-matroids and Embedded Graphs

Matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of graph theory. In this paper we propose an analogous correspondence between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. We show that delta-matroids arise as the natural extension of graphic matroids to the setting of embedded graphs. We show that various basic ribbon graph operations and concepts have delta-matroid analogues, and illustrate how the connections between embedded graphs and delta-matroids can be exploited. Also, in direct analogy with the fact that The Tutte polynomial is matroidal, we show that several polynomials of embedded graphs from the literature, including the Las Vergnas, Bollabas-Riordan and Krushkal polynomials, are in fact delta-matroidal.

The Merino-Welsh Conjecture holds for Series-Parallel Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Merino-Welsh conjecture asserts that the number of spanning trees of a graph is no greater than the maximum of the numbers of totally cyclic orientations and acyclic orientations of that graph. We prove this conjecture for the class of series-parallel graphs.
On the structure of the h-vector of a paving matroid
We give two proofs that the $h$-vector of any paving matroid is a pure O-sequence, thus answering in the affirmative a conjecture made by R. Stanley, for this particular class of matroids. We also investigate the problem of obtaining good lower bounds for the number of bases of a paving matroid given its rank and number of elements.

k-L(2,1)-Labelling for Planar Graphs is NP-Complete for k >= 4
Published • View PublicationBIB
A mapping from the vertex set of a graph G = (V,E) into an interval of integers {0,...,k} is an L(2,1)-labelling of G of span k if any two adjacent vertices are mapped onto integers that are at least 2 apart, and every two vertices with a common neighbour are mapped onto distinct integers. It is known that for any fixed k >= 4, deciding the existence of such a labelling is an NP-complete problem while it is polynomial for k <= 3. For even k >= 8, it remains NP-complete when restricted to planar graphs. In this paper, we show that it remains NP-complete for any k >= 4 by reduction from Planar Cubic Two-Colourable Perfect Matching. Schaefer stated without proof that Planar Cubic Two-Colourable Perfect Matching is NP-complete. In this paper we give a proof of this.

Counting cocircuits and convex two-colourings is #P-complete
We prove that the problem of counting the number of colourings of the vertices of a graph with at most two colours, such that the colour classes induce connected subgraphs is #P-complete. We also show that the closely related problem of counting the number of cocircuits of a graph is #P-complete.

The Equivalence of Two Graph Polynomials and a Symmetric Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The U-polynomial, the polychromate and the symmetric function generalization of the Tutte polynomial due to Stanley are known to be equivalent in the sense that the coefficients of any one of them can be obtained as a function of the coefficients of any other. The definition of each of these functions suggests a natural way in which to generalize them which also captures Tutte's universal V-functions as a specialization. We show that the equivalence remains true for the extended functions thus answering a question raised by Dominic Welsh.

The Clustering Coefficient of a Scale-Free Random Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random graph process in which, at each time step, a new vertex is added with m out-neighbours, chosen with probabilities proportional to their degree plus a strictly positive constant. We show that the expectation of the clustering coefficient of the graph process is asymptotically proportional to log n/n. Bollobás and Riordan have previously shown that when the constant is zero, the same expectation is asymptotically proportional to ((log n)^2)/n.
