The point regular automorphism groups of the Payne derived quadrangle of $W(q)$
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, (179)2021, 105384 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we completely determine the point regular automorphism groups of the Payne derived quadrangle of the symplectic quadrangle $W(q)$, $q$ odd. As a corollary, we show that the finite groups that act regularly on the points of a finite generalized quadrangle can have unbounded nilpotency class.

Optimal optical orthogonal signature pattern codes with weight three and cross-correlation constraint one
Published • View PublicationBIB
Optical orthogonal signature pattern codes (OOSPCs) have attracted wide attention as signature patterns of spatial optical code division multiple access networks. In this paper, an improved upper bound on the size of an $(m,n,3,λ_a,1)$-OOSPC with $λ_a=2,3$ is established. The exact number of codewords of an optimal $(m,n,3,λ_a,1)$-OOSPC is determined for any positive integers $m,n\equiv2\ ({\rm mod }\ 4)$ and $λ_a\in\{2,3\}$.

Leaves for packings with block size four
We consider maximum packings of edge-disjoint $4$-cliques in the complete graph $K_n$. When $n \equiv 1$ or $4 \pmod{12}$, these are simply block designs. In other congruence classes, there are necessarily uncovered edges; we examine the possible `leave' graphs induced by those edges. We give particular emphasis to the case $n \equiv 0$ or $3 \pmod{12}$, when the leave is $2$-regular. Colbourn and Ling settled the case of Hamiltonian leaves in this case. We extend their construction and use several additional direct and recursive constructions to realize a variety of $2$-regular leaves. For various subsets $S \subseteq \{3,4,5,\dots\}$, we establish explicit lower bounds on $n$ to guarantee the existence of maximum packings with any possible leave whose cycle lengths belong to $S$.

An infinite family of $m$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$
In this paper, we construct an infinite family of $\frac{q-1}{2}$-ovoids of the generalized quadrangle $Q(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 1 (\text{mod}\ 4)$ and $q>5$. Together with the examples given by Bamberg et al. and constructions provided by Feng et al., this establishes the existence of $\frac{q-1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for each odd prime power $q$.

Strong difference families of special types
Strong difference families of special types are introduced to produce new relative difference families from the point of view of both asymptotic existences and concrete examples. As applications, group divisible designs of type $30^u$ with block size $6$ are discussed, $r$-rotational balanced incomplete block designs with block size $6$ are derived for $r\in\{6,10\}$, and several classes of optimal optical orthogonal codes with weight $5$, $6$, $7$, or $8$ are obtained.

Several classes of optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 581 (2019), 128-144 • View PublicationBIB
Four constructions for Ferrers diagram rank-metric (FDRM) codes are presented. The first one makes use of a characterization on generator matrices of a class of systematic maximum rank distance codes. By introducing restricted Gabidulin codes, the second construction is presented, which unifies many known constructions for FDRM codes. The third and fourth constructions are based on two different ways to represent elements of a finite field $\mathbb F_{q^m}$ (vector representation and matrix representation). Each of these constructions produces optimal codes with different diagrams and parameters.

Optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes and related equi-difference conflict avoiding codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper focuses on constructions for optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes with $m\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod}\ 4)$. An upper bound on the size of such codes is established. It relies heavily on the size of optimal equi-difference $1$-D $(m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal codes, which is closely related to optimal equi-difference conflict avoiding codes with weight $3$. The exact number of codewords of an optimal $2$-D $(n\times m,3,2,1)$-optical orthogonal code is determined for $n=1,2$, $m\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, and $n\equiv 0 \pmod{3}$, $m\equiv 8 \pmod{16}$ or $m\equiv 32 \pmod{64}$ or $m\equiv 4,20 \pmod{48}$.

Constructions for optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Optimal rank-metric codes in Ferrers diagrams can be used to construct good subspace codes. Such codes consist of matrices having zeros at certain fixed positions. This paper generalizes the known constructions for Ferrers diagram rank-metric (FDRM) codes. Via a criteria for linear maximum rank distance (MRD) codes, an explicit construction for a class of systematic MRD codes is presented, which is used to produce new optimal FDRM codes. By exploring subcodes of Gabidulin codes, if each of the rightmost $δ-1$ columns in Ferrers diagram $\cal F$ has at least $n-r$ dots, where $r$ is taken in a range, then the conditions that an FDRM code in $\cal F$ is optimal are established. The known combining constructions for FDRM code are generalized by introducing the concept of proper combinations of Ferrers diagrams.

The shift bound for abelian codes and generalizations of the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group. If $f: G\rightarrow \bC$ is a nonzero function with Fourier transform $\hf$, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle states that $|\supp(f)||\supp(\hf)|\geq |G|$. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we present the shift bound for abelian codes with a streamlined proof. Second, we use the shifting technique to prove a generalization and a sharpening of the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. In particular, the sharpened uncertainty principle states, with notation above, that $|\supp(f)||\supp(\hf)|\geq |G|+|\supp(f)|-|H(\supp(f))|$, where $H(\supp(f))$ is the stabilizer of $\supp(f)$ in $G$.

Frame difference families and resolvable balanced incomplete block designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Frame difference families, which can be obtained via a careful use of cyclotomic conditions attached to strong difference families, play an important role in direct constructions for resolvable balanced incomplete block designs. We establish asymptotic existences for several classes of frame difference families. As corollaries new infinite families of 1-rotational $(pq+1,p+1,1)$-RBIBDs over $\mathbb{F}_{p}^+ \times \mathbb{F}_{q}^+$ are derived, and the existence of $(125q+1,6,1)$-RBIBDs is discussed. We construct $(v,8,1)$-RBIBDs for $v\in\{624,1576,2976,5720,5776,10200,14176,24480\}$, whose existence were previously in doubt. As applications, we establish asymptotic existences for an infinite family of optimal constant composition codes and an infinite family of strictly optimal frequency hopping sequences.

New $2$-designs from strong difference families
Published • View PublicationBIB
Strong difference families are an interesting class of discrete structures which can be used to derive relative difference families. Relative difference families are closely related to $2$-designs, and have applications in constructions for many significant codes, such as optical orthogonal codes and optical orthogonal signature pattern codes. In this paper, with a careful use of cyclotomic conditions attached to strong difference families, we improve the lower bound on the asymptotic existence results of $(\mathbb{F}_{p}\times \mathbb{F}_{q},\mathbb{F}_{p}\times \{0\},k,λ)$-DFs for $k\in\{p,p+1\}$. We improve Buratti's existence results for $2$-$(13q,13,λ)$ designs and $2$-$(17q,17,λ)$ designs, and establish the existence of seven new $2$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs for $(v,k,λ)\in\{(694,7,2),(1576,8,1),(2025,9,1),(765,9,2),(1845,9,2),(459,9,4)$, $(783,9,4)\}$.

Finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group. Under a mild number-theoretic condition involving the order and dimension of the plane, the translation complement must contain a linear cyclic subgroup that either is transitive or has two equal-sized orbits on the line at infinity. We develop a new approach to the study of such planes by associating them with planar functions and permutation polynomials in the odd order and even order case respectively. In the odd order case, we characterize the Kantor-Suetake family by using Menichetti's classification of generalized twisted fields and Blokhuis, Lavrauw and Ball's classifcation of rank two commutative semifields. In the even order case, we develop a technique to study permutation polynomials of DO type by quadratic forms and characterize such planes that have dimensions up to four over their kernels.

A family of $m$-ovoids of parabolic quadrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.

Three-valued Gauss periods, circulant weighing matrices and association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gauss periods taking exactly two values are closely related to two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and strongly regular Cayley graphs. They have been extensively studied in the work of Schmidt and White and others. In this paper, we consider the question of when Gauss periods take exactly three rational values. We obtain numerical necessary conditions for Gauss periods to take exactly three rational values. We show that in certain cases, the necessary conditions obtained are also sufficient. We give numerous examples where the Gauss periods take exactly three vlaues. Furthermore, we discuss connections between three-valued Gauss periods and combinatorial structures such as circulant weighing matrices and 3-class association schemes.

Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$
In this paper, we give an algebraic construction of a new infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$ for $q\equiv 5$ or $9\pmod{12}$, which generalizes the examples found by Rodgers in \cite{rodgers} through a computer search. Furthermore, in the case where $q$ is an even power of $3$, we construct the first infinite family of affine two-intersection sets in $\mathrm{AG}(2,q)$.

Two-dimensional balanced sampling plans avoiding adjacent units
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hedayat et al. first introduced balanced sampling plans for the exclusion of contiguous units. Wright detailed the results of a preliminary investigation of two-dimensional balanced sampling plans avoiding adjacent units (2-BSAs), and pointed out explicitly three types of 2-BSAs, which have different adjacency scheme, namely "Row and Column", "Sharing a Border" and "Island". This paper will provide more details for the three types of 2-BSAs from the point of view of design theory.

Semi-cyclic holey group divisible designs with block size three and applications to sampling designs and optical orthogonal codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the existence problem for a semi-cyclic holey group divisible design of type (n,m^t) with block size 3, which is denoted by a 3-SCHGDD of type (n,m^t). When t is odd and n\neq 8 or t is doubly even and t\neq 8, the existence problem is completely solved; when t is singly even, many infinite families are obtained. Applications of our results to two-dimensional balanced sampling plans and optimal two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes are also discussed.
