The weak Lefschetz property, monomial ideals, and lozenges
Published in Illinois J. Math. 55 (2011), no. 1, 377--395 • View PublicationBIB
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function of each level Artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables is peaked strictly unimodal.

Properties of cut ideals associated to ring graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A cut ideal of a graph records the relations among the cuts of the graph. These toric ideals have been introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant who also posed the problem of relating their properties to the combinatorial structure of the graph. We study the cut ideals of the family of ring graphs, which includes trees and cycles. We show that they have quadratic Gröbner bases and that their coordinate rings are Koszul, Hilbertian, and Cohen-Macaulay, but not Gorenstein in general.

Betti numbers of monomial ideals and shifted skew shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present two new problems on lower bounds for resolution Betti numbers of monomial ideals generated in a fixed degree. The first concerns any such ideal and bounds the total Betti numbers, while the second concerns ideals that are quadratic and bihomogeneous with respect to two variable sets, but gives a more finely graded lower bound. These problems are solved for certain classes of ideals that generalize (in two different directions) the edge ideals of threshold graphs and Ferrers graphs. In the process, we produce particularly simple cellular linear resolutions for strongly stable and squarefree strongly stable ideals generated in a fixed degree, and combinatorial interpretations for the Betti numbers of other classes of ideals, all of which are independent of the coefficient field.

Glicci simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
One of the main open questions in liaison theory is whether every homogeneous Cohen-Macaulay ideal in a polynomial ring is glicci, i.e. if it is in the G-liaison class of a complete intersection. We give an affirmative answer to this question for Stanley-Reisner ideals defined by simplicial complexes that are weakly vertex-decomposable. This class of complexes includes matroid, shifted and Gorenstein complexes respectively. Moreover, we construct a simplicial complex which shows that the property of being glicci depends on the characteristic of the base field. As an application of our methods we establish new evidence for two conjectures of Stanley on partitionable complexes and on Stanley decompositions.

Specializations of Ferrers ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a specialization technique in order to study monomial ideals that are generated in degree two by using our earlier results about Ferrers ideals. It allows us to describe explicitly a cellular minimal free resolution of various ideals including any strongly stable and any squarefree strongly stable ideal whose minimal generators have degree two. In particular, this shows that threshold graphs can be obtained as specializations of Ferrers graphs, which explains their similar properties.

On the degree two entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector and a conjecture of Stanley
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 136 (2008), No. 8, 2755-2762 • View PublicationBIB
In this note we establish a (non-trivial) lower bound on the degree two entry $h_2$ of a Gorenstein $h$-vector of any given socle degree $e$ and any codimension $r$. In particular, when $e=4$, that is for Gorenstein $h$-vectors of the form $h=(1,r,h_2,r,1)$, our lower bound allows us to prove a conjecture of Stanley on the order of magnitude of the minimum value, say $f(r)$, that $h_2$ may assume. In fact, we show that $$\lim_{r\to \infty} {f(r)\over r^{2/3}}= 6^{2/3}.$$ In general, we wonder whether our lower bound is sharp for all integers $e\geq 4$ and $r\geq 2$.

Monomial and toric ideals associated to Ferrers graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedral cell complex to the ideal/graph. Along the way, we also determine the irredundant primary decomposition of any Ferrers ideal. We conclude our analysis by studying several features of toric rings of Ferrers graphs. In particular we recover/establish formulae for the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the multiplicity of these rings. While most of the previous works in this highly investigated area of research involve path counting arguments, we offer here a new and self-contained approach based on results from Gorenstein liaison theory.

Empty simplices of polytopes and graded Betti numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjecture of Kalai, Kleinschmidt, and Lee on the number of empty simplices of a simplicial polytope is established by relating it to the first graded Betti numbers of the polytope. The proof allows us to derive explicit optimal bounds on the number of empty simplices of any given dimension. As a key result, we prove optimal bounds for the graded Betti numbers of any standard graded K-algebra in terms of its Hilbert function.
