A construction method for WZ seeds
We propose a systematic method for constructing Wilf-Zeilberger (WZ) seeds and present seven WZ seeds. We also demonstrate how to construct WZ seeds from existing ones. With these WZ seeds, several hypergeometric identities are derived. The construction can be extended to the $q$-cases, leading to the $q$-analogues of the seven WZ seeds.

Polynomial Reduction and Super Congruences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Based on a reduction processing, we rewrite a hypergeometric term as the sum of the difference of a hypergeometric term and a reduced hypergeometric term (the reduced part, in short). We show that when the initial hypergeometric term has a certain kind of symmetry, the reduced part contains only odd or even powers. As applications, we derived two infinite families of super-congruences.

Telescoping method and congruences for double sums
Published in Int. J. Number Theory 14(2018), 143-165 • View PublicationBIB
In recent years, Z.-W. Sun proposed several sophisticated conjectures on congruences for finite sums with terms involving combinatorial sequences such as central trinomial coefficients, Domb numbers and Franel numbers. These sums are double summations of hypergeometric terms. Using the telescoping method and certain mathematical software packages, we transform such a double summation into a single sum. With this new approach, we confirm several open conjectures of Sun.

Congruences on the Number of Restricted $m$-ary Partitions

Andrews, Brietzke, Rødseth and Sellers proved an infinite family of congruences on the number of the restricted $m$-ary partitions when $m$ is a prime. In this note, we show that these congruences hold for arbitrary positive integer $m$ and thus confirm the conjecture of Andrews, et al.

The Extended Zeilberger's Algorithm with Parameters
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a hypergeometric series $\sum_k f(k,a, b, ...,c)$ with parameters $a, b, >...,c$, Paule has found a variation of Zeilberger's algorithm to establish recurrence relations involving shifts on the parameters. We consider a more general problem concerning several similar hypergeometric terms $f_1(k, a, b,..., c)$, $f_2(k, a,b, ..., c)$, $...$, $f_m(k, a, b, ..., c)$. We present an algorithm to derive a linear relation among the sums $\sum_k f_i(k,a,b,...,c)$ $(1\leq i \leq m)$. Furthermore, when the summand $f_i$ contains the parameter $x$, we can require that the coefficients be $x$-free. Such relations with $x$-free coefficients can be used to determine whether a polynomial sequence satisfies the three term recurrence and structure relations for orthogonal polynomials. The $q$-analogue of this approach is called the extended $q$-Zeilberger's algorithm, which can be employed to derive recurrence relations on the Askey-Wilson polynomials and the $q$-Racah polynomials.

Nonterminating Basic Hypergeometric Series and the $q$-Zeilberger Algorithm
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a systematic method for proving nonterminating basic hypergeometric identities. Assume that $k$ is the summation index. By setting a parameter $x$ to $xq^n$, we may find a recurrence relation of the summation by using the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm. This method applies to almost all nonterminating basic hypergeometric summation formulas in the book of Gasper and Rahman. Furthermore, by comparing the recursions and the limit values, we may verify many classical transformation formulas, including the Sears-Carlitz transformation, transformations of the very-well-poised $_8φ_7$ series, the Rogers-Fine identity, and the limiting case of Watson's formula that implies the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

A Telescoping method for Double Summations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a method to prove hypergeometric double summation identities. Given a hypergeometric term $F(n,i,j)$, we aim to find a difference operator $ L=a_0(n) N^0 + a_1(n) N^1 +...+a_r(n) N^r $ and rational functions $R_1(n,i,j),R_2(n,i,j)$ such that $ L F = Δ_i (R_1 F) + Δ_j (R_2 F)$. Based on simple divisibility considerations, we show that the denominators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ must possess certain factors which can be computed from $F(n, i,j)$. Using these factors as estimates, we may find the numerators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ by guessing the upper bounds of the degrees and solving systems of linear equations. Our method is valid for the Andrews-Paule identity, Carlitz's identities, the Apéry-Schmidt-Strehl identity, the Graham-Knuth-Patashnik identity, and the Petkovšek-Wilf-Zeilberger identity.

Applicability of the $q$-Analogue of Zeilberger's Algorithm
The applicability or terminating condition for the ordinary case of Zeilberger's algorithm was recently obtained by Abramov. For the $q$-analogue, the question of whether a bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term has a $qZ$-pair remains open. Le has found a solution to this problem when the given bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term is a rational function in certain powers of $q$. We solve the problem for the general case by giving a characterization of bivariate $q$-hypergeometric terms for which the $q$-analogue of Zeilberger's algorithm terminates. Moreover, we give an algorithm to determine whether a bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term has a $qZ$-pair.
