Given a positive integer $s$, a graph $G$ is $s$-Ramsey for a graph $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_s$, if every $s$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number ${\hat{r}}_s(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be ${\hat{r}}_s(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_s\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $k$ and $s$, we have ${\hat{r}}_s(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$.

We prove that for any $t\ge 3$ there exist constants $c>0$ and $n_0$ such that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $t\mid n\geq n_0$ and second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $λ$ satisfying $λ\le c d^{t}/n^{t-1}$ contains a $K_t$-factor, that is, vertex-disjoint copies of $K_t$ covering every vertex of $G$.

We prove that, for any $t\ge 3$, there exists a constant $c=c(t)>0$ such that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph with the second largest eigenvalue in absolute value~$λ$ satisfying $λ\le c d^{t-1}/n^{t-2}$ contains vertex-disjoint copies of $K_t$ covering all but at most $n^{1-1/(8t^4)}$ vertices. This provides further support for the conjecture of Krivelevich, Sudakov and Szábo [\emph{Triangle factors in sparse pseudo-random graphs}, Combinatorica \textbf{24} (2004), pp.~403--426] that $(n,d,λ)$-graphs with $n\in 3\mathbb{N}$ and $λ\leq cd^{2}/n$ for a suitably small absolute constant~$c>0$ contain triangle-factors.

For $k\ge 2$ and $r\ge 1$ such that $k+r\ge 4$, we prove that, for any $α>0$, there exists $ε>0$ such that the union of an $n$-vertex $k$-graph with minimum codegree $\left(1-\binom{k+r-2}{k-1}^{-1}+α\right)n$ and a binomial random $k$-graph $\mathbb{G}^{(k)}(n,p)$ with $p\ge n^{-\binom{k+r-2}{k-1}^{-1}-ε}$ on the same vertex set contains the $r^{\text{th}}$ power of a tight Hamilton cycle with high probability. This result for $r=1$ was first proved by McDowell and Mycroft.
Universality for bounded degree spanning trees in randomly perturbed graphs
We solve a problem of Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov [SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 31 (2017), 155-171] concerning the threshold for the containment of all bounded degree spanning trees in the model of randomly perturbed dense graphs. More precisely, we show that, if we start with a dense graph $G_α$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G_α)\ge αn$ for $α>0$ and we add to it the binomial random graph $G(n,C/n)$, then with high probability the graph $G_α\cup G(n,C/n)$ contains copies of all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $Δ$ simultaneously, where $C$ depends only on $α$ and $Δ$.
Making spanning graphs
We prove that for each $D\ge 2$ there exists $c>0$ such that whenever $b\le c\big(\tfrac{n}{\log n}\big)^{1/D}$, in the $(1:b)$ Maker-Breaker game played on $E(K_n)$, Maker has a strategy to guarantee claiming a graph $G$ containing copies of all graphs $H$ with $v(H)\le n$ and $Δ(H)\le D$. We show further that the graph $G$ guaranteed by this strategy also contains copies of any graph $H$ with bounded maximum degree and degeneracy at most $\tfrac{D-1}{2}$. This lower bound on the threshold bias is sharp up to the $\log$-factor when $H$ consists of $\tfrac{n}{3}$ vertex-disjoint triangles or $\tfrac{n}{4}$ vertex-disjoint $K_4$-copies.
Estimating parameters associated with monotone properties

There has been substantial interest in estimating the value of a graph parameter, i.e., of a real-valued function defined on the set of finite graphs, by querying a randomly sampled substructure whose size is independent of the size of the input. Graph parameters that may be successfully estimated in this way are said to be testable or estimable, and the sample complexity $q_z=q_z(ε)$ of an estimable parameter $z$ is the size of a random sample of a graph $G$ required to ensure that the value of $z(G)$ may be estimated within an error of $ε$ with probability at least 2/3. In this paper, for any fixed monotone graph property $\mathcal{P}=\mbox{Forb}(\mathcal{F})$, we study the sample complexity of estimating a bounded graph parameter $z_{\mathcal{P}}$ that, for an input graph $G$, counts the number of spanning subgraphs of $G$ that satisfy $\mathcal{P}$. To improve upon previous upper bounds on the sample complexity, we show that the vertex set of any graph that satisfies a monotone property $\mathcal{P}$ may be partitioned equitably into a constant number of classes in such a way that the cluster graph induced by the partition is not far from satisfying a natural weighted graph generalization of $\mathcal{P}$. Properties for which this holds are said to be recoverable, and the study of recoverable properties may be of independent interest.

Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $q$ say that $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_q$, if every $q$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be $\hat{r}(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_2\}$. Answering a question of Conlon, we prove that, for every fixed $k$, we have $\hat{r}(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$-th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$ (i.e. , the graph with vertex set $V(P_n)$ and all edges $\{u,v\}$ such that the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $P_n$ is at most $k$). Our proof is probabilistic, but can also be made constructive.

Recently, Mubayi and Wang showed that for $r\ge 4$ and $\ell \ge 3$, the number of $n$-vertex $r$-graphs that do not contain any loose cycle of length $\ell$ is at most $2^{O( n^{r-1} (\log n)^{(r-3)/(r-2)})}$. We improve this bound to $2^{O( n^{r-1} \log \log n) }$.

The blow-up lemma states that a system of super-regular pairs contains all bounded degree spanning graphs as subgraphs that embed into a corresponding system of complete pairs. This lemma has far-reaching applications in extremal combinatorics.
We prove sparse analogues of the blow-up lemma for subgraphs of random and of pseudorandom graphs. Our main results are the following three sparse versions of the blow-up lemma: one for embedding spanning graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ in subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with $p=C(\log n/n)^{1/Δ}$; one for embedding spanning graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ and degeneracy $D$ in subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with $p=C_Δ\big(\log n/n\big)^{1/(2D+1)}$; and one for embedding spanning graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ in $(p,cp^{\max(4,(3Δ+1)/2)}n)$-bijumbled graphs.
We also consider various applications of these lemmas.

Bal and DeBiasio [Partitioning random graphs into monochromatic components, Electron. J. Combin. 24 (2017), Paper 1.18] put forward a conjecture concerning the threshold for the following Ramsey-type property for graphs $G$: every $k$-colouring of the edge set of $G$ yields $k$ pairwise vertex disjoint monochromatic trees that partition the whole vertex set of $G$. We determine the threshold for this property for two colours.

We establish a so-called counting lemma that allows embeddings of certain linear uniform hypergraphs into sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs, generalizing a result for graphs [Embedding graphs with bounded degree in sparse pseudorandom graphs, Israel J. Math. 139 (2004), 93-137]. Applications of our result are presented in the companion paper [Counting results for sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs II].

We present a variant of a universality result of Rödl [On universality of graphs with uniformly distributed edges, Discrete Math. 59 (1986), no. 1-2, 125-134] for sparse, $3$-uniform hypergraphs contained in strongly jumbled hypergraphs. One of the ingredients of our proof is a counting lemma for fixed hypergraphs in sparse ``pseudorandom'' uniform hypergraphs, which is proved in the companion paper [Counting results for sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs I].

Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, we investigate for which functions $p=p(n)$ the random graph $G_{n,p}$ (the binomial random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$) satisfies with probability $1-o(1)$ that every red-blue-coloring of its edges contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. We prove a general upper bound on the threshold for this property under the assumption that the denser of the two graphs satisfies a certain balancedness condition. Our result partially confirms a conjecture by the first author and Kreuter, and together with earlier lower bound results establishes the exact order of magnitude of the threshold for the case in which $G$ and $H$ are complete graphs of arbitrary size.
In our proof we present an alternative to the so-called deletion method, which was introduced by Rödl and Ruciński in their study of symmetric Ramsey properties of random graphs (i.e. the case $G=H$), and has been used in many proofs of similar results since then.

We consider quasirandom properties for Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups. We show that having uniform edge-distribution (i.e., small discrepancy) and having large eigenvalue gap are equivalent properties for such Cayley graphs, even if they are sparse. This positively answers a question of Chung and Graham ["Sparse quasi-random graphs", Combinatorica 22 (2002), no. 2, 217-244] for the particular case of Cayley graphs of abelian groups, while in general the answer is negative.
The maximum size of a non-trivial intersecting uniform family that is not a subfamily of the Hilton--Milner family

The celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem determines the maximum size of a $k$-uniform intersecting family. The Hilton-Milner theorem determines the maximum size of a $k$-uniform intersecting family that is not a subfamily of the so-called Erdős-Ko-Rado family. In turn, it is natural to ask what the maximum size of an intersecting $k$-uniform family that is neither a subfamily of the Erdős-Ko-Rado family nor of the Hilton-Milner family is. For $k\ge 4$, this was solved (implicitly) in the same paper by Hilton-Milner in 1967. We give a different and simpler proof, based on the shifting method, which allows us to solve all cases $k\ge 3$ and characterize all extremal families achieving the extremal value.

The chromatic threshold $δ_χ(H,p)$ of a graph $H$ with respect to the random graph $G(n,p)$ is the infimum over $d > 0$ such that the following holds with high probability: the family of $H$-free graphs $G \subset G(n,p)$ with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge dpn$ has bounded chromatic number. The study of the parameter $δ_χ(H) := δ_χ(H,1)$ was initiated in 1973 by Erdős and Simonovits, and was recently determined for all graphs $H$. In this paper we show that $δ_χ(H,p) = δ_χ(H)$ for all fixed $p \in (0,1)$, but that typically $δ_χ(H,p) \ne δ_χ(H)$ if $p = o(1)$. We also make significant progress towards determining $δ_χ(H,p)$ for all graphs $H$ in the range $p = n^{-o(1)}$. In sparser random graphs the problem is somewhat more complicated, and is studied in a separate paper.

Here we study the problem for sparse random graphs. We determine $δ_χ(H,p)$ for most functions $p = p(n)$ when $H\in\{K_3,C_5\}$, and also for all graphs $H$ with $χ(H) \not\in \{3,4\}$.
Triangle-free subgraphs of random graphs

Recently there has been much interest in studying random graph analogues of well known classical results in extremal graph theory. Here we follow this trend and investigate the structure of triangle-free subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with high minimum degree. We prove that asymptotically almost surely each triangle-free spanning subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $\big(\frac{2}{5} + o(1)\big)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to bipartite, and each spanning triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{3}+\varepsilon)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to $r$-partite for some $r=r(\varepsilon)$. These are random graph analogues of a result by Andrásfai, Erdős, and Sós [Discrete Math. 8 (1974), 205-218], and a result by Thomassen [Combinatorica 22 (2002), 591--596]. We also show that our results are best possible up to a constant factor.

A classical theorem of Erdos, Lovasz and Spencer asserts that the densities of connected subgraphs in large graphs are independent. We prove an analogue of this theorem for permutations and we then apply the methods used in the proof to give an example of a finitely approximable permutation parameter that is not finitely forcible. The latter answers a question posed by two of the authors and Moreira and Sampaio.
