Homomorphism counting for immersion-closed classes is not isomorphism
Lovász proved that two graphs $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic if $\hom(K,G) = \hom(K,H)$ for all graphs $K$, where $\hom(G_1,G_2)$ denotes the number of homomorphisms from $G_1$ to $G_2$. Dvořák showed that it suffices to count homomorphisms from all $2$-degenerate graphs $K$. On the other hand, for several interesting graph classes $\mathcal{M}$, it has been shown that there exist non-isomorphic graphs $G$ and $H$ such that $\hom(K,G)=\hom(K,H)$ for all $K\in \mathcal{M}$. Most such classes are minor-closed classes and Roberson conjectured that every proper minor-closed and union-closed graph class $\mathcal{M}$ has the property of there existing non-isomorphic graphs that are indistinguishable by homomorphism counts from $\mathcal{M}$. There has been an effort to prove Roberson's conjecture as it is believed that minor-closed classes play a special role in the context of homomorphism indistinguishability.
We show that this special role, if so, must be shared, by proving an analogue of Roberson's conjecture holds for a rich family of non-minor-closed classes. Namely, we prove that for any proper immersion-closed and union-closed class $\mathcal{M}$, there exist non-isomorphic graphs $G$ and $H$ such that $\hom(K,G) = \hom(K,H)$ for all $K \in \mathcal{M}$.
This extends a result of Roberson on homomorphism indistinguishability over bounded degree graphs, and gives an almost full picture since our result cannot be extended in the natural way, that is, by replacing immersions with topological minors, due to a result of Neuen and Seppelt.
Tree-width of a graph excluding an apex-forest or a wheel as a minor
The Grid Minor Theorem states that for every planar graph $H$, there exists a smallest integer $f(H)$ such that every graph with tree-width at least $f(H)$ contains $H$ as a minor. The only known lower bounds on $f(H)$ beyond the trivial bound $f(H)\geq |V(H)|-1$ come from the maximum number of disjoint cycles in $H$. In this paper, we study $f(H)$ for planar graphs $H$ with no two disjoint cycles. We prove that $f(H)=|V(H)|-1$ for every apex-forest $H$. This result improves a bound of Leaf and Seymour and contains all known large graphs $H$ meeting the trivial lower bound to our knowledge. We also prove that $f(H)\leq \max\{\tfrac32|V(H)|-\tfrac92,|V(H)|-1\}$ for every wheel $H$.
Improved Decomposition Bounds for Partition Polytopes and Odd-Covers
The assignments of a set of $m$ items into $n$ clusters of prescribed sizes $k_1,\dots,k_n$ can be encoded as the vertices of the partition polytope $\mathrm{PP}(k_1,\dots,k_n)$. We prove that, if $K = \max\{k_1,\dots,k_n\}$, then the combinatorial diameter of $\mathrm{PP}(k_1,\dots,k_n)$ is at most $\lceil 3K/2\rceil$. This improves the previously known upper bound of $2K$.
A cycle (or path) odd-cover of a graph $G$ is a set of cycles (or paths) with symmetric difference $G$. We prove that every Eulerian graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a cycle odd-cover and a path odd-cover, each of size at most $\lceil 3Δ/4\rceil$. This improves the previously known upper bound of $Δ$.
The two proofs share many similarities and are both based on the proof of Akiyama, Exoo, and Harary that every graph with maximum degree 4 has linear arboricity at most 3.
Erdős-Pósa property of $A$-paths in unoriented group-labelled graphs
We characterize the obstructions to the Erdős-Pósa property of $A$-paths in unoriented group-labelled graphs. As a result, we prove that for every finite abelian group $Γ$ and for every subset $Λ$ of $Γ$, the family of $Γ$-labelled $A$-paths whose lengths are in $Λ$ satisfies the half-integral Erdős-Pósa property. Moreover, we give a characterization of such $Γ$ and $Λ\subseteqΓ$ for which the same family of $A$-paths satisfies the full Erdős-Pósa property.
Tight minimum degree conditions for apex-outerplanar minors and subdivisions in graphs and digraphs
Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture and related problems for list-coloring, we study graphs $H$ for which every graph with minimum degree at least $|V(H)|-1$ contains $H$ as a minor. We prove that a large class of apex-outerplanar graphs satisfies this property. Our result gives the first examples of such graphs whose vertex cover numbers are significantly larger than half of the number of its vertices, which breaks a barrier for attacking related coloring problems via extremal functions, and recovers all known such graphs that have arbitrarily large maximum degree. Our proof can be adapted to directed graphs to show that if $\vec H$ is the digraph obtained from a directed cycle or an in-arborescence by adding an apex source, then every digraph with minimum out-degree $|V(\vec H)|-1$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdivision or a butterfly minor respectively. These results provide the optimal upper bound for the chromatic number and dichromatic number of graphs and digraphs that do not contain the aforementioned graphs or digraphs as a minor, butterfly minor and a subdivision, respectively. Special cases of our results solve an open problem of Aboulker, Cohen, Havet, Lochet, Moura and Thomassé and strengthen results of Gishboliner, Steiner and Szabó.
Path Odd-Covers of Graphs
We introduce and study "path odd-covers", a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The "path odd-cover number" $p_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in $V(G)$ and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is $E(G)$.
We prove an upper bound on $p_2(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ$ and the number of odd-degree vertices $v_{\text{odd}}$ of the form $\max\left\{v_{\text{odd}}/{2}, 2\left\lceil Δ/{2}\right \rceil\right\}$. This bound is only a factor of $2$ from a rather immediate lower bound of the form $\max \left\{ {v_{\text{odd}} }/{2} , \left\lceil Δ/{2}\right\rceil \right\}$. We also investigate some natural relaxations of the problem which highlight the connection between the path odd-cover number and other well-known graph parameters. For example, when allowing for subdivisions of $G$, the previously mentioned lower bound is always tight except in some trivial cases. Further, a relaxation that allows for the addition of isolated vertices to $G$ leads to a match with the linear arboricity when $G$ is Eulerian. Finally, we transfer our observations to establish analogous results for cycle odd-covers.
Sampling planar tanglegrams and pairs of disjoint triangulations
A tanglegram consists of two rooted binary trees and a perfect matching between their leaves, and a planar tanglegram is one that admits a layout with no crossings. We show that the problem of generating planar tanglegrams uniformly at random reduces to the corresponding problem for irreducible planar tanglegram layouts, which are known to be in bijection with pairs of disjoint triangulations of a convex polygon. We extend the flip operation on a single triangulation to a flip operation on pairs of disjoint triangulations. Interestingly, the resulting flip graph is both connected and regular, and hence a random walk on this graph converges to the uniform distribution. We also show that the restriction of the flip graph to the pairs with a fixed triangulation in either coordinate is connected, and give diameter bounds that are near optimal. Our results furthermore yield new insight into the flip graph of triangulations of a convex $n$-gon with a geometric interpretation on the associahedron.

In 1965, Erdős and Pósa proved that there is an (approximate) duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold for odd cycles, and Dejter and Neumann-Lara asked in 1988 to find all pairs ${(\ell, z)}$ of integers where such a duality holds for the family of cycles of length $\ell$ modulo $z$. We characterise all such pairs, and we further generalise this characterisation to cycles in graphs labelled with a bounded number of abelian groups, whose values avoid a bounded number of elements of each group. This unifies almost all known types of cycles that admit such a duality, and it also provides new results. Moreover, we characterise the obstructions to such a duality in this setting, and thereby obtain an analogous characterisation for cycles in graphs embeddable on a fixed compact orientable surface.

We prove that every simple 2-connected subcubic graph on $n$ vertices with $n_2$ vertices of degree 2 has a TSP walk of length at most $\frac{5n+n_2}{4}-1$, confirming a conjecture of Dvořák, Král', and Mohar. This bound is best possible; there are infinitely many subcubic and cubic graphs whose minimum TSP walks have lengths $\frac{5n+n_2}{4}-1$ and $\frac{5n}{4} - 2$ respectively. We characterize the extremal subcubic examples meeting this bound. We also give a quadratic-time combinatorial algorithm for finding such a TSP walk. In particular, we obtain a $\frac{5}{4}$-approximation algorithm for the graphic TSP on simple cubic graphs, improving on the previously best known approximation ratio of $\frac{9}{7}$.

It is known that $A$-paths of length $0$ mod $m$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property if $m=2$ or $m=4$, but not if $m > 4$ is composite. We show that if $p$ is prime, then $A$-paths of length $0$ mod $p$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property. More generally, in the framework of undirected group-labelled graphs, we characterize the abelian groups $Γ$ and elements $\ell \in Γ$ for which the Erdős-Pósa property holds for $A$-paths of weight $\ell$.

We prove a refinement of the flat wall theorem of Robertson and Seymour to undirected group-labelled graphs $(G,γ)$ where $γ$ assigns to each edge of an undirected graph $G$ an element of an abelian group $Γ$. As a consequence, we prove that $Γ$-nonzero cycles (cycles whose edges sum to a non-identity element of $Γ$) satisfy the half-integral Erdős-Pósa property, and we also recover a result of Wollan that, if $Γ$ has no element of order two, then $Γ$-nonzero cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property. As another application, we prove that if $m$ is an odd prime power, then cycles of length $\ell \mod m$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property for all integers $\ell$. This partially answers a question of Dejter and Neumann-Lara from 1987 on characterizing all such integer pairs $(\ell,m)$.

We prove two results:
1. A graph $G$ on at least seven vertices with a vertex $v$ such that $G-v$ is planar and $t$ triangles satisfies $|E(G)| \leq 3|V(G)|- 9 + t/3$.
2. For $p=2,3,\ldots,9$, a triangle-free graph $G$ on at least $2p-5$ vertices with no $K_p$-minor satisfies $|E(G)|\leq (p-2)|V(G)| - (p-2)^2$.
