Tower-type bounds for Roth's theorem with popular differences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Green developed an arithmetic regularity lemma to prove a strengthening of Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions in dense sets. It states that for every $ε> 0$ there is some $N_0(ε)$ such that for every $N \ge N_0(ε)$ and $A \subset [N]$ with $|A| = αN$, there is some nonzero $d$ such that $A$ contains at least $(α^3 - ε) N$ three-term arithmetic progressions with common difference $d$. We prove that the minimum $N_0(ε)$ in Green's theorem is an exponential tower of 2s of height on the order of $\log(1/ε)$. Both the lower and upper bounds are new. It shows that the tower-type bounds that arise from the use of a regularity lemma in this application are quantitatively necessary.

The regularity method for graphs with few 4-cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a sparse graph regularity method that applies to graphs with few 4-cycles, including new counting and removal lemmas for 5-cycles in such graphs. Some applications include: * Every $n$-vertex graph with no 5-cycle can be made triangle-free by deleting $o(n^{3/2})$ edges. * For $r \geq 3$, every $n$-vertex $r$-graph with girth greater than $5$ has $o(n^{3/2})$ edges. * Every subset of $[n]$ without a nontrivial solution to the equation $x_1 + x_2 + 2x_3 = x_4 + 3x_5$ has size $o(\sqrt{n})$.

Patterns without a popular difference

Which finite sets $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^r$ with $|P| \ge 3$ have the following property: for every $A \subseteq [N]^r$, there is some nonzero integer $d$ such that $A$ contains $(α^{|P|} - o(1))N^r$ translates of $d \cdot P = \{d p : p \in P\}$, where $α= |A|/N^r$? Green showed that all 3-point $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ have the above property. Green and Tao showed that 4-point sets of the form $P = \{a, a+b, a+c, a+b+c\} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ also have the property. We show that no other sets have the above property. Furthermore, for various $P$, we provide new upper bounds on the number of translates of $d \cdot P$ that one can guarantee to find.

A counterexample to the Bollobás-Riordan conjectures on sparse graph limits
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 30 (5), 2021, 796-799 • View PublicationBIB
Bollobás and Riordan, in their paper "Metrics for sparse graphs," proposed a number of provocative conjectures extending central results of quasirandom graphs and graph limits to sparse graphs. We refute these conjectures by exhibiting a sequence of graphs with convergent normalized subgraph densities (and pseudorandom $C_4$-counts), but with no limit expressible as a kernel.

Joints tightened
Published in Amer. J. Math.145(2023), no.2, 569--583 • View PublicationBIB
In $d$-dimensional space (over any field), given a set of lines, a joint is a point passed through by $d$ lines not all lying in some hyperplane. The joints problem asks to determine the maximum number of joints formed by $L$ lines, and it was one of the successes of the Guth--Katz polynomial method. We prove a new upper bound on the number of joints that matches, up to a $1+o(1)$ factor, the best known construction: place $k$ generic hyperplanes, and use their $(d-1)$-wise intersections to form $\binom{k}{d-1}$ lines and their $d$-wise intersections to form $\binom{k}{d}$ joints. Guth conjectured that this construction is optimal. Our technique builds on the work on Ruixiang Zhang proving the multijoints conjecture via an extension of the polynomial method. We set up a variational problem to control the high order of vanishing of a polynomial at each joint.

Testing linear-invariant properties
Published in SIAM J. Comput. 51 (2022), 1230--1279 • View PublicationBIB
Fix a prime $p$ and a positive integer $R$. We study the property testing of functions $\mathbb F_p^n\to[R]$. We say that a property is testable if there exists an oblivious tester for this property with one-sided error and constant query complexity. Furthermore, a property is proximity oblivious-testable (PO-testable) if the test is also independent of the proximity parameter $ε$. It is known that a number of natural properties such as linearity and being a low degree polynomial are PO-testable. These properties are examples of linear-invariant properties, meaning that they are preserved under linear automorphisms of the domain. Following work of Kaufman and Sudan, the study of linear-invariant properties has been an important problem in arithmetic property testing. A central conjecture in this field, proposed by Bhattacharyya, Grigorescu, and Shapira, is that a linear-invariant property is testable if and only if it is semi subspace-hereditary. We prove two results, the first resolves this conjecture and the second classifies PO-testable properties. (1) A linear-invariant property is testable if and only if it is semi subspace-hereditary. (2) A linear-invariant property is PO-testable if and only if it is locally characterized. Our innovations are two-fold. We give a more powerful version of the compactness argument first introduced by Alon and Shapira. This relies on a new strong arithmetic regularity lemma in which one mixes different levels of Gowers uniformity. This allows us to extend the work of Bhattacharyya, Fischer, Hatami, Hatami, and Lovett by removing the bounded complexity restriction in their work. Our second innovation is a novel recoloring technique called patching. This Ramsey-theoretic technique is critical for working in the linear-invariant setting and allows us to remove the translation-invariant restriction present in previous work.

Induced arithmetic removal: complexity 1 patterns over finite fields
Published in Israel J. Math. 248 (2022), 1--38 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an arithmetic analog of the induced graph removal lemma for complexity 1 patterns over finite fields. Informally speaking, we show that given a fixed collection of $r$-colored complexity 1 arithmetic patterns over $\mathbb F_q$, every coloring $φ\colon \mathbb F_q^n \setminus\{0\} \to [r]$ with $o(1)$ density of every such pattern can be recolored on an $o(1)$-fraction of the space so that no such pattern remains.

Common and Sidorenko Linear Equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A linear equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q$ is common if the number of monochromatic solutions in any two-coloring of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is asymptotically (as $n \to \infty$) at least the number expected in a random two-coloring. The linear equation is Sidorenko if the number of solutions in any dense subset of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is asymptotically at least the number expected in a random set of the same density. In this paper, we characterize those linear equations which are common, and those which are Sidorenko. The main novelty is a construction based on choosing random Fourier coefficients that shows that certain linear equations do not have these properties. This solves problems posed in a paper of Saad and Wolf.

On the upper tail problem for random hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erdős--Rényi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-probability that the number of copies of fixed subgraph $H$ in a sparse Erdős--Rényi random $k$-uniform hypergraph exceeds its expectation by a constant factor. This conjecture turns out to be significantly more intricate compared to the case for graphs. We verify our conjecture when the fixed subgraph $H$ being counted is a clique, as well as when $H$ is the 3-uniform 6-vertex 4-edge hypergraph consisting of alternating faces of an octahedron, where new techniques are required.
Equiangular lines with a fixed angle
Published in Annals of Mathematics 194 (2021), 729--743 • View PublicationBIB
Solving a longstanding problem on equiangular lines, we determine, for each given fixed angle and in all sufficiently large dimensions, the maximum number of lines pairwise separated by the given angle. Fix $0 < α< 1$. Let $N_α(d)$ denote the maximum number of lines through the origin in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with pairwise common angle $\arccos α$. Let $k$ denote the minimum number (if it exists) of vertices in a graph whose adjacency matrix has spectral radius exactly $(1-α)/(2α)$. If $k < \infty$, then $N_α(d) = \lfloor k(d-1)/(k-1) \rfloor$ for all sufficiently large $d$, and otherwise $N_α(d) = d + o(d)$. In particular, $N_{1/(2k-1)}(d) = \lfloor k(d-1)/(k-1) \rfloor$ for every integer $k\ge 2$ and all sufficiently large $d$. A key ingredient is a new result in spectral graph theory: the adjacency matrix of a connected bounded degree graph has sublinear second eigenvalue multiplicity.

Exponential improvements for superball packing upper bounds

We prove that for all fixed $p > 2$, the translative packing density of unit $\ell_p$-balls in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is at most $2^{(γ_p + o(1))n}$ with $γ_p < - 1/p$. This is the first exponential improvement in high dimensions since van der Corput and Schaake (1936).
Triforce and Corners
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 169 (2020) 209-223 • View PublicationBIB
May the $\mathit{triforce}$ be the 3-uniform hypergraph on six vertices with edges $\{123',12'3,1'23\}$. We show that the minimum triforce density in a 3-uniform hypergraph of edge density $δ$ is $δ^{4-o(1)}$ but not $O(δ^4)$. Let $M(δ)$ be the maximum number such that the following holds: for every $ε> 0$ and $G = \mathbb{F}_2^n$ with $n$ sufficiently large, if $A \subseteq G \times G$ with $A \ge δ|G|^2$, then there exists a nonzero "popular difference" $d \in G$ such that the number of "corners" $(x,y), (x+d,y), (x,y+d) \in A$ is at least $(M(δ) - ε)|G|^2$. As a corollary via a recent result of Mandache, we conclude that $M(δ) = δ^{4-o(1)}$ and $M(δ) = ω(δ^4)$. On the other hand, for $0 < δ< 1/2$ and sufficiently large $N$, there exists $A \subseteq [N]^3$ with $|A|\geδN^3$ such that for every $d \ne 0$, the number of corners $(x,y,z), (x+d,y,z),(x,y+d,z),(x,y,z+d) \in A$ is at most $δ^{c \log (1/δ)} N^3$. A similar bound holds in higher dimensions, or for any configuration with at least 5 points or affine dimension at least 3.

A reverse Sidorenko inequality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a graph allowing loops as well as vertex and edge weights. We prove that, for every triangle-free graph $G$ without isolated vertices, the weighted number of graph homomorphisms $\hom(G, H)$ satisfies the inequality \[ \hom(G, H ) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} \hom(K_{d_u,d_v}, H )^{1/(d_ud_v)}, \] where $d_u$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In particular, one has \[ \hom(G, H )^{1/|E(G)|} \le \hom(K_{d,d}, H )^{1/d^2} \] for every $d$-regular triangle-free $G$. The triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ is best possible. More generally, we prove a graphical Brascamp-Lieb type inequality, where every edge of $G$ is assigned some two-variable function. These inequalities imply tight upper bounds on the partition function of various statistical models such as the Ising and Potts models, which includes independent sets and graph colorings. For graph colorings, corresponding to $H = K_q$, we show that the triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ may be dropped; this is also valid if some of the vertices of $K_q$ are looped. A corollary is that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d,d}$ maximizes the quantity $c_q(G)^{1/|V(G)|}$ for every $q$ and $d$, where $c_q(G)$ counts proper $q$-colorings of $G$. Finally, we show that if the edge-weight matrix of $H$ is positive semidefinite, then \[ \hom(G, H) \le \prod_{v \in V(G)} \hom(K_{d_v+1}, H )^{1/(d_v+1)}. \] This implies that among $d$-regular graphs, $G = K_{d+1}$ maximizes $\hom(G, H)^{1/|V(G)|}$. For 2-spin Ising models, our results give a complete characterization of extremal graphs: complete bipartite graphs maximize the partition function of 2-spin antiferromagnetic models and cliques maximize the partition function of ferromagnetic models. These results settle a number of conjectures by Galvin-Tetali, Galvin, and Cohen-Csikvári-Perkins-Tetali, and provide an alternate proof to a conjecture by Kahn.

Hypergraph expanders of all uniformities from Cayley graphs
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 121(5): 1311--1336 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Hypergraph expanders are hypergraphs with surprising, non-intuitive expansion properties. In a recent paper, the first author gave a simple construction, which can be randomized, of $3$-uniform hypergraph expanders with polylogarithmic degree. We generalize this construction, giving a simple construction of $r$-uniform hypergraph expanders for all $r \geq 3$.

On the number of Hadamard matrices via anti-concentration
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many problems in combinatorial linear algebra require upper bounds on the number of solutions to an underdetermined system of linear equations $Ax = b$, where the coordinates of the vector $x$ are restricted to take values in some small subset (e.g. $\{\pm 1\}$) of the underlying field. The classical ways of bounding this quantity are to use either a rank bound observation due to Odlyzko or a vector anti-concentration inequality due to Halász. The former gives a stronger conclusion except when the number of equations is significantly smaller than the number of variables; even in such situations, the hypotheses of Halász's inequality are quite hard to verify in practice. In this paper, using a novel approach to the anti-concentration problem for vector sums, we obtain new Halász-type inequalities which beat the Odlyzko bound even in settings where the number of equations is comparable to the number of variables. In addition to being stronger, our inequalities have hypotheses which are considerably easier to verify. We present two applications of our inequalities to combinatorial (random) matrix theory: (i) we obtain the first non-trivial upper bound on the number of $n\times n$ Hadamard matrices, and (ii) we improve a recent bound of Deneanu and Vu on the probability of normality of a random $\{\pm 1\}$ matrix.

The number of independent sets in an irregular graph
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 138 (2019), 172--195 • View PublicationBIB
Settling Kahn's conjecture (2001), we prove the following upper bound on the number $i(G)$ of independent sets in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices: \[ i(G) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} i(K_{d_u,d_v})^{1/(d_u d_v)}, \] where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. Equality occurs when $G$ is a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs. The inequality was previously proved for regular graphs by Kahn and Zhao. We also prove an analogous tight lower bound: \[ i(G) \ge \prod_{v \in V(G)} i(K_{d_v+1})^{1/(d_v + 1)}, \] where equality occurs for $G$ a disjoint union of cliques. More generally, we prove bounds on the weighted versions of these quantities, i.e., the independent set polynomial, or equivalently the partition function of the hard-core model with a given fugacity on a graph.

Efficient arithmetic regularity and removal lemmas for induced bipartite patterns
Published in Discrete Analysis 2019:3, 14 pp • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an abelian group of bounded exponent and $A \subseteq G$. We show that if the collection of translates of $A$ has VC dimension at most $d$, then for every $ε>0$ there is a subgroup $H$ of $G$ of index at most $ε^{-d-o(1)}$ such that one can add or delete at most $ε|G|$ elements to/from $A$ to make it a union of $H$-cosets. We also establish a removal lemma with polynomial bounds, with applications to property testing, for induced bipartite patterns in a finite abelian group with bounded exponent.

A fast new algorithm for weak graph regularity
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 777-790 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a deterministic algorithm that finds, in $ε^{-O(1)} n^2$ time, an $ε$-regular Frieze-Kannan partition of a graph on $n$ vertices. The algorithm outputs an approximation of a given graph as a weighted sum of $ε^{-O(1)}$ many complete bipartite graphs. As a corollary, we give a deterministic algorithm for estimating the number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ up to an additive error of at most $εn^{v(H)}$, in time $ε^{-O_H(1)}n^2$.
