Sharp edge-spectral supersaturation for odd cycles
Let \(G\) be a graph with \(m\) edges and adjacency spectral radius\(ρ(G)\), and let \(N(C_{2k+1},G)\) denote the number of copies of \(C_{2k+1}\) in \(G\). For each fixed integer \(k\ge 2\), define \( g_k(m):=\frac{k-1+\sqrt{4m-k^2+1}}{2}. \) Li, Zhai and Shu [European J. Combin., 2024] determined the spectral extremal threshold for odd cycles by proving that, for all sufficiently large \(m\), every \(C_{2k+1}\)-free graph \(G\) with \(m\) edges satisfies \(ρ(G)\le g_k(m)\).
We establish the asymptotically sharp supersaturation counterpart of their result. More precisely, for every fixed integer \(k\ge 2\), we prove that \[ \inf_{\substack{e(G)=m\\ ρ(G)>g_k(m)}} \frac{N(C_{2k+1},G)}{m^k} =
\frac{\lceil k^2/2\rceil (k-1)!}{(k+1)^k}+o(1) \qquad\text{as }m\to\infty. \] Thus every \(m\)-edge graph whose spectral radius exceeds the \(C_{2k+1}\)-free threshold contains at least \[ \Big( \frac{\lceil k^2/2\rceil (k-1)!}{(k+1)^k}-o(1) \Big)m^k \] copies of \(C_{2k+1}\), and the leading constant is asymptotically best possible.
In particular, taking \(k=2\), we obtain if \( ρ(G)>\frac{1+\sqrt{4m-3}}{2}\) then \( N(C_5,G)\ge \left(\frac{2}{9}-o(1)\right)m^2, \) with the constant \(2/9\) being asymptotically optimal. This answers a question of Chen, Li and Tang concerning the existence and the largest possible value of a constant \(C>0\) for which the same spectral condition guarantees at least \(Cm^2\) copies of \(C_5\). More generally, our result resolves a recent problem of Li, Lin, Liu and Zhang on spectral supersaturation for odd cycles. The proof combines spectral stability and resolvent analysis with estimates for odd spectral moments and a careful treatment of non-injective closed walks.
On a spectral booksize problem fo non bipartite graphs
The $\text{bk}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of triangles sharing a common edge. Motivated by a classical conjecture of Erdős, spectral lower bounds for the booksize have received considerable attention. For a positive divisor $s$ of $m-1$ with $\frac{m-1}{s}\ge2$, let $S_{m,s}^{+}$ be obtained from $K_{s,\frac{m-1}{s}}$ by adding one edge inside the part of order $\frac{m-1}{s}$. Zhai et al. proved that, apart from this explicit family, every $m$-edge non-bipartite graph satisfying $ρ(G)^2\ge m-1+\frac{2}{ρ(G)-1}$ has booksize greater than $\frac{1}{240}\sqrt{m}$, and they asked for the best possible constant.
We answer this question asymptotically. For every $0<\varepsilon<\frac{1}{4}$ and all sufficiently large $m$, every $m$-edge non-bipartite graph $G$ without isolated vertices satisfying the same spectral condition either is isomorphic to $S_{m,s}^{+}$ for some such integer $s$, or satisfies $\text{bk}(G)>\left(\frac{1}{4}-\varepsilon\right)\sqrt{m}$. We also give infinitely many graphs outside the exceptional family showing that no constant larger than $\frac{1}{4}$ is possible. Thus $\frac{1}{4}$ is the optimal asymptotic constant in the problem of Zhai et al.
Minimal spectral radius of graphs with given matching number
The Brualdi-Solheid problem asks which graph achieves the extremal (maximum or minimum) spectral radius for a given class of graphs. This paper addresses the Brualdi-Solheid problem for \( \mathcal{G}_{n,β} \), the family of graphs with order \( n \) and matching number \( β\), aiming to identify its spectrally minimal graphs i.e., those that minimize the spectral radius \(ρ(G)\).
We introduce the novel concept of ``quasi-adjacency'' relation, developing a unified structural classification framework for trees in \(\mathcal{G}_{n,β}\), which clarifies structural properties and provides a constructive method to generate trees with fixed \(β\). By showing that all spectrally minimal graphs in \( \mathcal{G}_{n,β} \) are trees, we further narrow the search for extremal graphs. Additionally, we apply this framework to the representative cases \(β=2,3,4\), obtaining the minimizers by explicit structural formulas involving parameters related to \(n\).
Signless Laplacian spectral conditions: Forbidden $4$-cycle and star embeddings
The signless Laplacian spectral radius has emerged as a crucial spectral parameter in network science. This paper establishes new extremal results in spectral graph theory by investigating the signless Laplacian spectral radius ($Q$-index) of graphs with forbidden subgraphs. We present a $Q$-spectral analog of classical Nosal-type theorems, providing sharp conditions that guarantee the existence of either a $4$-cycle or a large star $K_{1,m-k}$ in a graph. The main theorem states that for integers $k \geq 0$ and graphs $G$ with size $m \geq \max\{7k+31, k^2+8(k+1)\}$, if $q(G) \geq q(S^+_{m,k+1})$, then $G$ must contain a $4$-cycle or $K_{1,m-k}$, unless $G$ is isomorphic to the extremal graph $S^+_{m,k+1}$ formed by adding $k+1$ independent edges to the star $K_{1,m-k-1}$. This result refines previous work on star embeddings by Wang and Guo [Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 59 (2024) 213--224], and completes the $Q$-spectral counterpart to Wang's adjacency spectral theorem for $4$-cycle containment [Discrete Math., 345 (2022) 112973]. Our analysis reveals new insights into how signless Laplacian eigenvalues encode graph structure, with tight bounds demonstrated through explicit extremal graph constructions and asymptotic analysis.
Advances on two spectral conjectures regarding booksize of graphs
The \emph{booksize} $ \mathrm{bk}(G) \) of a graph $ G $, introduced by Erdős, refers to the maximum integer $ r $ for which $G$ contains the book $ B_r $ as a subgraph. This paper investigates two open problems in spectral graph theory related to the booksize of graphs.
First, we prove that for any positive integer $r$ and any $ B_{r+1} $-free graph $ G $ with $ m \geq (9r)^2 $ edges, the spectral radius satisfies $ ρ(G) \leq \sqrt{m} $. Equality holds if and only if $ G $ is a complete bipartite graph. This result improves the lower bound on the booksize of Nosal graphs (i.e., graphs with $ ρ(G) > \sqrt{m} $) from the previously established $ \mathrm{bk}(G) > \frac{1}{144}\sqrt{m} $ to $ \mathrm{bk}(G) > \frac{1}{9}\sqrt{m} $, presenting a significant advancement in the booksize conjecture proposed Li, Liu, and Zhang.
Second, we show that for any positive integer $r$ and any non-bipartite $ B_{r+1} $-free graph $ G $ with $ m \geq (240r)^2 $ edges, the spectral radius $ρ$ satisfies $ρ^2<m-1+\frac{2}{ρ-1}$, unless $G$ is isomorphic to $S^+_{m,s}$ for some $s\in\{1,\ldots,r\}$. This resolves Liu and Miao's conjecture and further reveals an interesting phenomenon: even with a weaker spectral condition, $ρ^2\geq m-1+\frac2{ρ-1}$, we can still derive the supersaturation of the booksize for non-bipartite graphs.
A Max-Min problem on spectral radius and connectedness of graphs
In the past decades, many scholars concerned which edge-extremal problems have spectral analogues? Recently, Wang, Kang and Xue showed an interesting result on $F$-free graphs [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 159 (2023) 20--41]. In this paper, we study the above problem on critical graphs.Let $P$ be a property defined on a family $\mathbb{G}$ of graphs. A graph $G$ in $\mathbb{G}$ is said to be $P$-critical,if it has the property $P$ but $G-e$ no longer has for any edge $e\in E(G)$. Especially, a graph is minimally $k$-(edge)-connected,if it is $k$-connected (respectively, $k$-edge connected) and deleting an arbitrary edge always leaves a graph which is not $k$-connected (respectively, $k$-edge-connected). An interesting Max-Min problem asks what is the maximal spectral radius of an $n$-vertex minimally $k$-(edge)-connected graphs? In 2019, Chen and Guo [Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 2092--2099] gave the answer for $k=2$. In 2021, Fan, Goryainov and Lin [Discrete Appl. Math. 305 (2021) 154--163] determined the extremal spectral radius for minimally $3$-connected graphs. We obtain some structural properties of minimally $k$-(edge)-connected graphs. Furthermore, we solve the above Max-Min problem for $k\geq3$, which implies that every minimally $k$-(edge)-connected graph with maximal spectral radius also has maximal number of edges. Finally, a general problem is posed for further research.
Disproof of a conjecture on the minimum spectral radius and the domination number
Let $G_{n,γ}$ be the set of all connected graphs on $n$ vertices with domination number $γ$. A graph is called a minimizer graph if it attains the minimum spectral radius among $G_{n,γ}$. Very recently, Liu, Li and Xie [Linear Algebra and its Applications 673 (2023) 233--258] proved that the minimizer graph over all graphs in $\mathbb{G}_{n,γ}$ must be a tree. Moreover, they determined the minimizer graph among $G_{n,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ for even $n$, and posed the conjecture on the minimizer graph among $G_{n,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ for odd $n$. In this paper, we disprove the conjecture and completely determine the unique minimizer graph among $G_{n,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ for odd $n$.
A generalization on spectral extrema of $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs

The spectral extrema problems on forbidding minors have aroused wide attention. Very recently, Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 157 (2022) 184--215] determined the extremal graph with maximum adjacency spectral radius among all $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs of sufficiently large order. The matrix $A_α(G)$ is a generalization of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$, which is defined by Nikiforov \cite{Nikiforov2} as $$A_α(G) = αD(G) + (1 - α)A(G),$$ where $0\leqα\leq1$. Given a graph $F$, the $A_α$-spectral extrema problem is to determine the maximum spectral radius of $A_α(G)$ or characterize the extremal graph among all graphs with no subgraph isomorphic to $F$. For $α=0$, the matrix $A_α(G)$ is exactly the adjacency matrix $A(G)$. Motivated by the nice work of Zhai and Lin, in this paper we determine the extremal graph with maximum $A_α$-spectral radius among all $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs of sufficiently large order, where $0<α<1$ and $2\leq s\leq t$. As by-products, we completely solve the Conjecture posed by Chen and Zhang in [Linear Multilinear Algebra 69 (10) (2021) 1922--1934].
Ordering $Q$-indices of graphs: given size and girth

The signless Laplacian matrix in graph spectra theory is a remarkable matrix of graphs, and it is extensively studied by researchers. In 1981, Cvetković pointed $12$ directions in further investigations of graph spectra, one of which is "classifying and ordering graphs". Along with this classic direction, we pay our attention on the order of the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian matrix of graphs, which is usually called the $Q$-index of a graph. Let $\mathbb{G}(m, g)$ (resp. $\mathbb{G}(m, \geq g)$) be the family of connected graphs on $m$ edges with girth $g$ (resp. no less than $g$), where $g\ge3$. In this paper, we firstly order the first $(\lfloor\frac{g}{2}\rfloor+2)$ largest $Q$-indices of graphs in $\mathbb{G}(m, g)$, where $m\ge 3g\ge 12$. Secondly, we order the first $(\lfloor\frac{g}{2}\rfloor+3)$ largest $Q$-indices of graphs in $\mathbb{G}(m, \geq g)$, where $m\ge 3g\ge 12$. As a complement, we give the first five largest $Q$-indices of graphs in $\mathbb{G}(m, 3)$ with $m\ge 9$. Finally, we give the order of the first eleven largest $Q$-indices of all connected graphs with size $m$.
Spectral radius of graphs with given size and odd girth

Let $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ be the set of graphs with size $m$ and odd girth (the length of shortest odd cycle) $k$. In this paper, we determine the graph maximizing the spectral radius among $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ when $m$ is odd. As byproducts, we show that, there is a number $η(m)>\sqrt{m-k+3}$ such that every non-bipartite graph $G$ with size $m$ and spectral radius $ρ\ge η(m)$ must contains an odd cycle of length less than $k$ unless $m$ is odd and $G\cong SK_{k,m}$, which is the graph obtained by subdividing an edge $k-2$ times of complete bipartite $K_{2,\frac{m-k+2}{2}}$. This result implies the main results of [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] and \cite{li-peng}, and settles the conjecture in \cite{li-peng} as well.
Graphs with the minimum spectral radius for given independence number

Let $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ be the set of connected graphs with order $n$ and independence number $α$. Given $k=n-α$, the graph with minimum spectral radius among $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ is called the minimizer graph. Stevanović in the classical book [D. Stevanović, Spectral Radius of Graphs, Academic Press, Amsterdam, 2015.] pointed that determining minimizer graph in $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ appears to be a tough problem on page $96$. Very recently, Lou and Guo in \cite{Lou} proved that the minimizer graph of $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ must be a tree if $α\ge\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$. In this paper, we further give the structural features for the minimizer graph in detail, and then provide of a constructing theorem for it. Thus, theoretically we completely determine the minimizer graphs in $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ along with their spectral radius for any given $k=n-α\le \frac{n}{2}$. As an application, we determine all the minimizer graphs in $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ for $α=n-1,n-2,n-3,n-4,n-5,n-6$ along with their spectral radii, the first four results are known in \cite{Xu,Lou} and the last two are new.
On the spectral radius of minimally 2-(edge)-connected graphs with given size

A graph is minimally $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected) if it is $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected) and deleting arbitrary chosen edge always leaves a graph which is not $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected). A classic result of minimally $k$-connected graph is given by Mader who determined the extremal size of a minimally $k$-connected graph of high order in 1937. Naturally, for a fixed size of a minimally $k$-(edge)-connected graphs, what is the extremal spectral radius? In this paper, we determine the maximum spectral radius for the minimally $2$-connected ($2$-edge-connected) graphs of given size, moreover the corresponding extremal graphs are also determined.
Maxima of the $Q$-index: Graphs with no $K_{1,t}$-minor

A graph is said to be \textit{$H$-minor free} if it does not contain $H$ as a minor. In this paper, we characteristic the unique extremal graph with maximal $Q$-index among all $n$-vertex $K_{1,t}$-minor free graphs ($t\ge3$).
Mixed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than $-\frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}$
The classical problem of characterizing the graphs with bounded eigenvalues may date back to the work of Smith in 1970. Especially, the research on graphs with smallest eigenvalues not less than $-2$ has attracted widespread attention. Mixed graphs are natural generalization of undirected graphs. In this paper, we completely characterize the mixed graphs with smallest Hermitian eigenvalue greater than $-\frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}$, which consists of three infinite classes of mixed graphs and $30$ scattered mixed graphs. By the way, we get a new class of mixed graphs switching equivalent to their underlying graphs.
Quadratic Embedding Constants of Graph Joins

The quadratic embedding constant (QE constant) of a graph is a new characteristic value of a graph defined through the distance matrix. We derive formulae for the QE constants of the join of two regular graphs, double graphs and certain lexicographic product graphs. Examples include complete bipartite graphs, wheel graphs, friendship graphs, completely split graph, and some graphs associated to strongly regular graphs.
