Let $T$ be a $k$-tree equipped with a weighting function $\w: V(T)\cup E(T)\rightarrow \C$, where $k \geq 3$. The weighted matching polynomial of the weighted $k$-tree $(T,\w)$ is defined to be $$ μ(T,\w,x)= \sum_{M \in \mathcal{M}(T)}(-1)^{|M|}\prod_{e \in E(M)}\mathbf{w}(e)^k \prod_{v \in V(T)\backslash V(M)}(x-\w(v)), $$ where $\mathcal{M}(T)$ denotes the set of matchings (including empty set) of $T$. In this paper, we investigate the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor $\A(T,\w)$ of the weighted $k$-tree $(T,\w)$. The main result provides that $\w(v)$ is an eigenvalue of $\A(T,\w)$ for every $v\in V(T)$, and if $λ\neq \w(v)$ for every $v\in V(T)$, then $λ$ is an eigenvalue of $\A(T,\w)$ if and only if there exists a subtree $T'$ of $T$ such that $λ$ is a root of $μ(T',\w,x)$. Moreover, the spectral radius of $\A(T,\w)$ is equal to the largest root of $μ(T,\w,x)$ when $\w$ is real and nonnegative. The result extends a work by Clark and Cooper ({\em On the adjacency spectra of hypertrees, Electron. J. Combin., 25 (2)(2018) $\#$P2.48}) to weighted $k$-trees. As applications, two analogues of the above work for the Laplacian and the signless Laplacian tensors of $k$-trees are obtained.

Let $\mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$ be the set of the connected $k$-uniform weighted hypergraphs with $n$ vertices, where $k,n\geq 3$. For a hypergraph $G\in \mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$, let $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ be its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor, respectively. The spectral radii of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are investigated. Some basic properties of the $H$-eigenvalue, the $H^{+}$-eigenvalue and the $H^{++}$-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are presented. Several lower and upper bounds of the $H$-eigenvalue, the $H^{+}$-eigenvalue and the $H^{++}$-eigenvalue for $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are established. The largest $H^{+}$-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and the smallest $H^{+}$-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are characterized. A relationship among the $H$-eigenvalues of $\mathcal{L} (G)$, $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ and $\mathcal{A} (G)$ is also given.

For $0\leq α< 1$, the $\mathcal{A}_α$-spectral radius of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is defined to be the spectral radius of the tensor $\mathcal{A}_α(G):=α\mathcal{D}(G)+(1-α) \mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $A(G)$ are diagonal and the adjacency tensors of $G$ respectively. This paper presents several lower bounds for the difference between the $\mathcal{A}_α$-spectral radius and an average degree $\frac{km}{n}$ for a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, which may be considered as the measures of irregularity of $G$. Moreover, two lower bounds on the $\mathcal{A}_α$-spectral radius are obtained in terms of the maximum and minimum degrees of a hypergraph.

Let $H$ be a connected $m$-uniform hypergraph, and let $\mathcal{A}(H)$ be the adjacency tensor of $H$ whose spectrum is simply called the spectrum of $H$. Let $s(H)$ denote the number of eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}(H)$ associated with the spectral radius, and $c(H)$ denote the number of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}(H)$ with modulus equal to the spectral radius, which are respectively called the stabilizing index and cyclic index of $H$. Let $\bar{H}$ be a $k$-fold covering of $H$ which can be obtained from some permutation assignment in the symmetric group $\mathbf{S}_k$ on $H$. In this paper, we first characterize the connectedness of $\bar{H}$ by its incidence graph and the permutation assignment, and then investigate the relationship between the spectral property of $H$ and that of $\bar{H}$. By applying module theory and group representation, if $\bar{H}$ is connected, we prove that $s(H) \mid s(\bar{H})$ and $c(H) \mid c(\bar{H})$. In particular, when $\bar{H}$ is a $2$-fold covering of $H$, if $m$ is even, we show that regardless of multiplicities, the spectrum of $\bar{H}$ contains the spectrum of $H$ and the spectrum of a signed hypergraph with $H$ as underlying hypergraph; if $m$ is odd, we give an explicit formula for $s(\bar{H})$. We also find some differences on the spectral property between hypergraph coverings and graph coverings by examples.

Uniform hypergraphs have a natural one-to-one correspondence to tensors. In this paper, we investigate the Estrada index and subgraph centrality of an $m$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ via the adjacency tensor. We establish some bounds for the Estrada index and give expressions of the subgraph centrality in terms of graph parameters of the multi-digraphs associated with $\mathcal{H}$. When $\mathcal{H}$ is $2$-uniform, the above Estrada index and subgraph centrality are the Estrada index and subgraph centrality of a graph.

Among all uniform hypergraphs with even uniformity, the odd-transversal or odd-bipartite hypergraphs are more close to bipartite simple graphs from the viewpoint of both structure and spectrum. A hypergraph is called minimal non-odd-transversal if it is non-odd-transversal but deleting any edge results in an odd-transversal hypergraph. In this paper we give an equivalent characterization of the minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraphs by the degrees and the rank of its incidence matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. If a minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraph is uniform, then it has even uniformity, and hence is minimal non-odd-bipartite. We characterize $2$-regular uniform minimal non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs, and give some examples of $d$-regular uniform hypergraphs which are minimal non-odd-bipartite. Finally we give upper bounds for the least H-eigenvalue of the adjacency tensor of minimal non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs.

Let $G$ be connected uniform hypergraph and let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The stabilizing index of $G$ is the number of eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with the spectral radius, and the cyclic index of $G$ is the number of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ with modulus equal to the spectral radius. Let $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 \Box G_2$ be the coalescence and Cartesian product of connected $m$-uniform hypergraphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ respectively. In this paper, we give explicit formulas for the the stabilizing indices and cyclic indices of $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 \Box G_2$ in terms of those of $G_1$ and $G_2$ or the invariant divisors of their incidence matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_m$, respectively.

Let $G$ be a connected hypergraph with even uniformity, which contains cut vertices. Then $G$ is the coalescence of two nontrivial connected sub-hypergraphs (called branches) at a cut vertex. Let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ refers to the least real eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with a real eigenvector. In this paper we obtain a perturbation result on the least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ when a branch of $G$ attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex, and characterize the unique hypergraph whose least H-eigenvalue attains the minimum among all hypergraphs in a certain class of hypergraphs which contain a fixed connected hypergraph.

The spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph is defined to be that of the adjacency tensor the hypergraph. It is known that the unique unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a nonlinear hypergraph, and the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a power hypergraph. In this paper we determine the the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the second or third largest spectral radius, where the former hypergraph is a power hypergraph and the latter hypergraph is a non-power hypergraph.

Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge $F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge in $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, we say that a hypergraph $H$ is Berge $\mathcal{F}$-free if for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$, the hypergraph $H$ does not contain a Berge $F$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we investigate the connections between spectral radius of the adjacency tensor and structural properties of a linear hypergraph. In particular, we obtain a spectral version of Turán-type problems over linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs by using spectral methods, including a tight result on Berge $C_4$-free linear $3$-uniform hypergraphs.

Let $G$ be a $t$-uniform hypergraph, and let $c(G)$ denote the cyclic index of the adjacency tensor of $G$. Let $m,s,t$ be positive integers such that $t \ge 2$, $s \ge 2$ and $m=st$. The generalized power $G^{m,s}$ of $G$ is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and preserving the adjacency relation. It was conjectured that $c(G^{m,s})=s \cdot c(G)$. In this paper we show that the conjecture is false by giving a counterexample, and give some sufficient conditions for the conjecture holding. Finally we give an equivalent characterization of the equality in the conjecture by using a matrix equation over $\mathbb{Z}_m$.

For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.

For a nonnegative weakly irreducible tensor, its spectral radius is an eigenvalue corresponding to a unique positive eigenvector up to a scalar called the Perron vector. But including the Perron vector, it may have more than one eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius. The projective eigenvariety associated with the spectral radius is the set of the eigenvectors corresponding to the spectral radius considered in the complex projective space. In this paper we prove that the dimension of the above projective eigenvariety is zero, i.e. there are finite many eigenvectors associated with the spectral radius up to a scalar. For a general nonnegative tensor, we characterize the nonnegative combinatorially symmetric tensor for which the dimension of projective eigenvariety associated with spectral radius is greater than zero. Finally we apply those results to the adjacency tensors of uniform hypergraphs.

For a nonnegative symmetric weakly irreducible tensor, its spectral radius is an eigenvalue corresponding to a unique positive eigenvector up to a scalar called the Perron vector. But including the Perron vector, there may have more than one eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius. The projective eigenvariety associated with the spectral radius is the set of the eigenvectors corresponding to the spectral radius considered in the complex projective space. In this paper we proved that such projective eigenvariety admits a module structure, which is determined by the support of the tensor and can be characterized explicitly by solving the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix of the tensor. We introduced two parameters: the stabilizing index and the stabilizing dimension of the tensor, where the former is exactly the cardinality of the projective eigenvariety and the latter is the composition length of the projective eigenvariety as a module. We give some upper bounds for the two parameters, and characterize the case that there is only one eigenvector of the tensor corresponding to the spectral radius, i.e. the Perron vector. By applying the above results to the adjacency tensor of a connected uniform hypergraph, we give some upper bounds for the two parameters in terms of the structural parameters of the hypergraph such as path cover number, matching number and the maximum length of paths.

The $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph covers many important concepts, such as Lagrangian and spectral radius of the hypergraph, and is crucial for solving spectral extremal problems of hypergraphs. In this paper, we establish a spherically constrained maximization model and propose a first-order conjugate gradient algorithm to compute the $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph (CSRH). By the semialgebraic nature of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH is globally convergent and obtains the global maximizer with a high probability. When computing the spectral radius of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH stands out among existing approaches. Furthermore, CSRH is competent to calculate the $p$-spectral radius of a hypergraph with millions of vertices and to approximate the Lagrangian of a hypergraph. Finally, we show that the CSRH method is capable of ranking real-world data set based on solutions generated by the $p$-spectral radius model.

Let $\mathcal{A}(H)$ be the adjacency tensor of $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. If $H$ is connected, the unique positive eigenvector $x=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)^{\mathrm{T}}$ with $||x||_r=1$ corresponding to spectral radius $ρ(H)$ is called the principal eigenvector of $H$. The maximum and minimum entries of $x$ are denoted by $x_{\max}$ and $x_{\min}$, respectively. In this paper, we investigate the bounds of $x_{\max}$ and $x_{\min}$ in the principal eigenvector of $H$. Meanwhile, we also obtain some bounds of the ratio $x_i/x_j$ for $i$, $j\in [n]$ as well as the principal ratio $γ(H)=x_{\max}/x_{\min}$ of $H$. As an application of these results we finally give an estimate of the gap of spectral radii between $H$ and its proper sub-hypergraph $H'$.

Let A(G) be the adjacency tensor (hypermatrix) of uniform hypergraph G. The maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of A(G) is called the spectral radius of G. In this paper, the conjecture of Fan et al. in [5] related to compare the spectral radii of some three uniform hypergraphs is solved. Moreover, some eigenvalues properties of a kind of uniform hypergraphs are obtained.

The spectral theory of higher-order symmetric tensors is an important tool to reveal some important properties of a hypergraph via its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor, and signless Laplacian tensor. Owing to the sparsity of these tensors, we propose an efficient approach to calculate products of these tensors and any vectors. Using the state-of-the-art L-BFGS approach, we develop a first-order optimization algorithm for computing H- and Z-eigenvalues of these large scale sparse tensors (CEST). With the aid of the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property, we prove that the sequence of iterates generated by CEST converges to an eigenvector of the tensor. When CEST is started from multiple randomly initial points, the resulting best eigenvalue could touch the extreme eigenvalue with a high probability. Finally, numerical experiments on small hypergraphs show that CEST is efficient and promising. Moreover, CEST is capable of computing eigenvalues of tensors corresponding to a hypergraph with millions of vertices.
