Wilf posed the following problem: determine asymptotically as $n\to\infty$ the probability that a randomly chosen part size in a randomly chosen composition of n has multiplicity m. One solution of this problem was given by Hitczenko and Savage. In this paper, we study this question using the techniques of generating functions and singularity analysis.

A composition of an integer is called Carlitz if adjacent parts are different. Several characteristics of random Carlitz compsitions have been studied recently by Knopfmacher and Prodinger. We complement their work by establishing the asymptotics of the average number of distinct part sizes in a random Carlitz composition.

The asymptotics, as $n\to\infty$, for the expected number of distinct part sizes in a random composition of an integer n is obtained.
A new partition identity coming from complex dynamics

We present a new identity involving compositions (i.e. ordered partitions of natural numbers). The Formula has its origin in complex dynamical systems and appears when counting, in the polynomial family $\{f_c:z \mapsto z^d + c \}$, periodic critical orbits with equivalent itineraries. We give two different proofs of the identity; one following the original approach in dynamics and another with purely combinatorial methods.
The Laurent phenomenon

A composition of birational maps given by Laurent polynomials need not be given by Laurent polynomials; however, sometimes---quite unexpectedly---it does. We suggest a unified treatment of this phenomenon, which covers a large class of applications. In particular, we settle in the affirmative a conjecture of D$.$Gale and R$.$Robinson on integrality of generalized Somos sequences, and prove the Laurent property for several multidimensional recurrences, confirming conjectures by J$.$Propp, N$.$Elkies, and M$.$Kleber.
The structure of Chip Firing Games and related models

In this paper, we study the dynamics of sand grains falling in sand piles. Usually sand piles are characterized by a decreasing integer partition and grain moves are described in terms of transitions between such partitions. We study here four main transition rules. The more classical one, introduced by Brylawski (1973) induces a lattice structure $L_B (n)$ (called dominance ordering) between decreasing partitions of a given integer n. We prove that a more restrictive transition rule, called SPM rule, induces a natural partition of L_B (n) in suborders, each one associated to a fixed point for SPM rule. In the second part, we extend the SPM rule in a natural way and obtain a model called Chip Firing Game (Goles and Kiwi, 1993). We prove that this new model has interesting properties: the induced order is a lattice, a natural greedoid can be associated to the model and it also defines a strongly convergent game. In the last section, we generalize the SPM rule in another way and obtain other lattice structure parametrized by some t: L(n,t), which form for -n+2 <= t <= n a decreasing sequence of lattices. For each t, we characterize the fixed point of L(n,t) and give the value of its maximal sized chain's lenght. We also note that L(n,-n+2) is the lattice of all compositions of n.
Valleyless Sequences
Valleyless sequences of finite length $n$ and maximum entry $k$ occur in tree enumeration problems and provide an interesting correspondence between permutations and compositions. In this paper we introduce the notion of \emph {valleyless} sequences, explore the correspondence and enumerate them using the method of generating functions.

Utilizing spectral residues of parameterized, recursively defined sequences, we develop a general method for generating identities of composition sums. Specific results are obtained by focusing on coefficient sequences of solutions of first and second order, ordinary, linear differential equations. Regarding the first class, the corresponding identities amount to a proof of the exponential formula of labelled counting. The identities in the second class can be used to establish certain geometric properties of the simplex of bounded, ordered, integer tuples. We present three theorems that support the conclusion that the inner dimensions of such an order simplex are, in a certain sense, more ample than the outer dimensions. As well, we give an algebraic proof of a bijection between two families of subsets in the order simplex, and inquire as to the possibility of establishing this bijection by combinatorial, rather than by algebraic methods.
Graphical Compositions 1: Basic Enumeration
Graph compositions generalize both integer compositions and partitions of a finite set. We develop formulas, generating functions and recurrence relations for composition counting functions for several families of graphs.
Composition sums related to the hypergeometric function
The present note considers a certain family of sums indexed by the set of fixed length compositions of a given number. The sums in question cannot be realized as weighted compositions. However they can be be related to the hypergeometric function, thereby allowing one to factorize the corresponding generating polynomials. This factorization leads to some interesting identities.

We present a variation and generalization of a determinant evaluation of Wilf (math.CO/9809120). His result concerns a matrix whose entries are the coefficients of powers of a given power series; we replace the powers by repeated compositions and obtain similar results.
