An edge-coloured version of Dirac's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an edge-coloured graph. The minimum colour degree $ δ^c(G) $ of $G$ is the largest integer $k$ such that, for every vertex $v$, there are at least $k$ distinct colours on edges incident to $v$. We say that $G$ is properly coloured if no two adjacent edges have the same colour. In this paper, we show that every edge-coloured graph $G$ with $ δ^c(G) \ge 2|G| / 3 $ contains a properly coloured $2$-factor. Furthermore, we show that for any $ \varepsilon > 0 $ there exists an integer $ n_0 $ such that every edge-coloured graph $G$ with $|G| = n \ge n_0 $ and $ δ^c(G) \ge ( 2/3 + \varepsilon ) n $ contains a properly coloured cycle of length $\ell$ for every $3 \le \ell \le n$. This result is best possible in the sense that the statement is false for $ δ^c(G) < 2n / 3 $.

Properly coloured Hamiltonian cycles in edge-coloured complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $K_n^c$ be an edge-coloured complete graph on $n$ vertices. Let $Δ_{\rm mon}(K_n^c)$ denote the largest number of edges of the same colour incident with a vertex of $K_n^c$. A properly coloured cycle is a cycle such that no two adjacent edges have the same colour. In 1976, Bollobás and Erdős conjectured that every $K_n^c$ with $Δ_{\rm mon}(K_n^c) < \lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ contains a properly coloured Hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we show that for any $\varepsilon > 0 $, there exists an integer $n_0$ such that every $K_n^c$ with $Δ_{\rm mon}(K_n^c) < (1/2 - \varepsilon) n $ and $n \ge n_0$ contains a properly coloured Hamiltonian cycle. This improves a result of Alon and Gutin. Hence, the conjecture of Bollobás and Erdős is true asymptotically.

Quantitative Combinatorial Nullstellensatz
Published in Uwe Schauz: Algebraically Solvable Problems: Describing Polynomials as Equivalent to Explicit Solutions. The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 15 (2008), #R10 • Search Publication
The main result of this paper is a coefficient formula that sharpens and generalizes Alon and Tarsi's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, which provides some information about the polynomial map $P|_{\X_1\times...\times\X_n}$ when only incomplete information about the polynomial $P(X_1,...c,X_n)$ is given. In a very general working frame, the grid points $x\in\X_1\times\...b\times\X_n$ which do not vanish under an algebraic solution -- a certain describing polynomial $P(X_1,...c,X_n)$ -- correspond to the explicit solutions of a problem. As a consequence of the coefficient formula, we prove that the existence of an algebraic solution is equivalent to the existence of a nontrivial solution to a problem. By a problem, we mean everything that "owns" both, a set $§$, which may be called the \emph{set of solutions}; and a subset $\St\subseteq§$, the \emph{set of trivial solutions}. We give several examples of how to find algebraic solutions, and how to apply our coefficient formula. These examples are mainly from graph theory and combinatorial number theory, but we also prove several versions of Chevalley and Warning's Theorem, including a generalization of Olson's Theorem, as examples and useful corollaries. We obtain a permanent formula by applying our coefficient formula to the matrix polynomial, which is a generalization of the graph polynomial. This formula is an integrative generalization and sharpening of: 1. Ryser's permanent formula. 2. Alon's Permanent Lemma. 3. Alon and Tarsi's Theorem about orientations and colorings of graphs. Furthermore, in combination with the Vigneron-Ellingham-Goddyn property of planar (n)regular graphs, the formula contains as very special cases: 4. Scheim's formula for the number of edge (n)-colorings of such graphs. 5. Ellingham and Goddyn's partial answer to the list coloring conjecture.
Structure and enumeration of (3+1)-free posets (extended abstract)
Published in 25th International Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC 2013), Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science Proceedings (2013) 253-264 • View Publication • BIB
A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets are the subject of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Recently, Lewis and Zhang have enumerated \emph{graded} (3+1)-free posets, but until now the general enumeration problem has remained open. We enumerate all (3+1)-free posets by giving a decomposition into bipartite graphs, and obtain generating functions for (3+1)-free posets with labelled or unlabelled vertices.
Threshold functions and Poisson convergence for systems of equations in random sets
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, February 2018, Volume 288, Issue 1-2, pp. 333-360 • View Publication • BIB
We present a unified framework to study threshold functions for the existence of solutions to linear systems of equations in random sets which includes arithmetic progressions, sum-free sets, $B_{h}[g]$-sets and Hilbert cubes. In particular, we show that there exists a threshold function for the property "$\mathcal{A}$ contains a non-trivial solution of $M\cdot\textbf{x}=\textbf{0}$", where $\mathcal{A}$ is a random set and each of its elements is chosen independently with the same probability from the interval of integers $\{1,\dots,n\}$. Our study contains a formal definition of trivial solutions for any combinatorial structure, extending a previous definition by Ruzsa when dealing with a single equation. Furthermore, we study the behaviour of the distribution of the number of non-trivial solutions at the threshold scale. We show that it converges to a Poisson distribution whose parameter depends on the volumes of certain convex polytopes arising from the linear system under study as well as the symmetry inherent in the structures, which we formally define and characterize.

Edge-Fault Tolerance of Hypercube-like Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper considers a kind of generalized measure $λ_s^{(h)}$ of fault tolerance in a hypercube-like graph $G_n$ which contain several well-known interconnection networks such as hypercubes, varietal hypercubes, twisted cubes, crossed cubes and Möbius cubes, and proves $λ_s^{(h)}(G_n)= 2^h(n-h)$ for any $h$ with $0\leqslant h\leqslant n-1$ by the induction on $n$ and a new technique. This result shows that at least $2^h(n-h)$ edges of $G_n$ have to be removed to get a disconnected graph that contains no vertices of degree less than $h$. Compared with previous results, this result enhances fault-tolerant ability of the above-mentioned networks theoretically.

On constant-multiple-free sets contained in a random set of integers
Published in Ars Combinatoria 113A (2014), 247-256 • Search Publication
For a rational number $r>1$, a set $A$ of positive integers is called an $r$-multiple-free set if $A$ does not contain any solution of the equation $rx = y$. The extremal problem on estimating the maximum possible size of $r$-multiple-free sets contained in $[n]:={1,2,...,n}$ has been studied for its own interest in combinatorial number theory and application to coding theory. Let $a$, $b$ be positive integers such that $a<b$ and the greatest common divisor of $a$ and $b$ is 1. Wakeham and Wood showed that the maximum size of $(b/a)$-multiple-free sets contained in $[n]$ is $\frac{b}{b+1}n+O(\log n)$. In this paper we generalize this result as follows. For a real number $p\in (0,1)$, let $[n]_p$ be a set of integers obtained by choosing each element $i\in [n]$ randomly and independently with probability $p$. We show that the maximum possible size of $(b/a)$-multiple-free sets contained in $[n]_p$ is $\frac{b}{b+p}pn+O(\sqrt{pn}\log n \log \log n)$ with probability that goes to 1 as $n\to \infty$.

Counting and packing Hamilton cycles in dense graphs and oriented graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a general method for counting and packing Hamilton cycles in dense graphs and oriented graphs, based on permanent estimates. We utilize this approach to prove several extremal results. In particular, we show that every nearly $cn$-regular oriented graph on $n$ vertices with $c>3/8$ contains $(cn/e)^n(1+o(1))^n$ directed Hamilton cycles. This is an extension of a result of Cuckler, who settled an old conjecture of Thomassen about the number of Hamilton cycles in regular tournaments. We also prove that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of minimum degree at least $(1/2+\varepsilon)n$ contains at least $(1-\varepsilon)\textrm{reg}_{even}(G)/2$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, where $\reg(G)$ is the maximum \emph{even} degree of a spanning regular subgraph of $G$. This establishes an approximate version of a conjecture of Kühn, Lapinskas and Osthus.

Ramsey theory for p-quasicyclic groups with a view towards topological dynamics
We prove additive and multiplicative partition theorems, obtaining combinatorial results for p-quasicyclic groups, where p is a prime number. We also get density results for p-quasicyclic groups via left Følner sequences of non-empty finite subsets of it, giving a sufficient condition in order a subset of a p-quasicyclic group to contain arbitrary long arithmetic progressions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a dynamical system over p-quasicyclic groups extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrent results for the p-quasicyclic groups. In particular, we prove recurrent results analogous to Furstenberg-Weiss type theorems for classical systems.

A zero-sum theorem over Z
Published • View Publication • BIB
A zero-sum sequence of integers is a sequence of nonzero terms that sum to 0. Let $k>0$ be an integer and let $[-k,k]$ denote the set of all nonzero integers between $-k$ and $k$. Let $\ell(k)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that any zero-sum sequence with elements from $[-k,k]$ and length greater than $\ell$ contains a proper nonempty zero-sum subsequence. In this paper, we prove a more general result which implies that $\ell(k)=2k-1$ for $k>1$.
Distinguished three-qubit 'magicity' via automorphisms of the split Cayley hexagon
Published in Quantum Information Processing 12 (2013) 2535-2549 • View Publication • BIB
Disregarding the identity, the remaining 63 elements of the generalized three-qubit Pauli group are found to contain 12096 distinct copies of Mermin's magic pentagram. Remarkably, 12096 is also the number of automorphisms of the smallest split Cayley hexagon. We give a few solid arguments showing that this may not be a mere coincidence. These arguments are mainly tied to the structure of certain types of geometric hyperplanes of the hexagon. It is further demonstrated that also an (18_{2}, 12_{3})-type of magic configurations, recently proposed by Waegell and Aravind (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 405301), seems to be intricately linked with automorphisms of the hexagon. Finally, the entanglement properties exhibited by edges of both pentagrams and these particular Waegell-Aravind configurations are addressed.

The Clique Density Theorem
Published in Annals of Mathematics 184 (2016), 683-707 • View Publication • BIB
Turán's theorem is a cornerstone of extremal graph theory. It asserts that for any integer $r \geq 2$ every graph on $n$ vertices with more than ${\tfrac{r-2}{2(r-1)}\cdot n^2}$ edges contains a clique of size $r$, i.e., $r$ mutually adjacent vertices. The corresponding extremal graphs are balanced $(r-1)$-partite graphs. The question as to how many such $r$-cliques appear at least in any $n$-vertex graph with $γn^2$ edges has been intensively studied in the literature. In particular, Lovász and Simonovits conjectured in the 1970s that asymptotically the best possible lower bound is given by the complete multipartite graph with $γn^2$ edges in which all but one vertex class is of the same size while the remaining one may be smaller. Their conjecture was recently resolved for $r=3$ by Razborov and for $r=4$ by Nikiforov. In this article, we prove the conjecture for all values of $r$.

The Arc-Weighted Version of the Second Neighborhood Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Seymour conjectured that every oriented simple graph contains a vertex whose second neighborhood is at least as large as its first. Seymour's conjecture has been verified in several special cases, most notably for tournaments by Fisher. One extension of the conjecture that has been used by several researchers is to consider vertex-weighted digraphs. In this paper we introduce a version of the conjecture for arc-weighted digraphs. We prove the conjecture in the special case of arc-weighted tournaments, strengthening Fisher's theorem. Our proof does not rely on Fisher's result, and thus can be seen as an alternate proof of said theorem.

Connected tree-width
Published • View Publication • BIB
The connected tree-width of a graph is the minimum width of a tree-decomposition whose parts induce connected subgraphs. Long cycles are examples of graphs that have small tree-width but large connected tree-width. We show that a graph has small connected tree-width if and only if it has small tree-width and contains no long geodesic cycle. We further prove a connected analogue of the duality theorem for tree-width: a finite graph has small connected tree-width if and only if it has no bramble whose connected covers are all large. Both these results are qualitative: the bounds are good but not tight. We show that graphs of connected tree-width $k$ are $k$-hyperbolic, which is tight, and that graphs of tree-width $k$ whose geodesic cycles all have length at most $\ell$ are $\lfloor{3\over2}\ell(k-1)\rfloor$-hyperbolic. The existence of such a function $h(k,\ell)$ had been conjectured by Sullivan.

Bipancyclic subgraphs in random bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A bipartite graph on 2n vertices is bipancyclic if it contains cycles of all even lengths from 4 to 2n. In this paper we prove that the random bipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$ with $p(n)\gg n^{-2/3}$ asymptotically almost surely has the following resilience property: Every Hamiltonian subgraph $G'$ of $G(n,n,p)$ with more than $(1/2+o(1))n^2p$ edges is bipancyclic. This result is tight in two ways. First, the range of $p$ is essentially best possible. Second, the proportion 1/2 of edges cannot be reduced. Our result extends a classical theorem of Mitchem and Schmeichel.

Around a conjecture of ErdH{o}s on graph Ramsey numbers
For given graphs G1 and G2 the Ramsey number R(G1,G2), is the smallest positive integer n such that each blue-red edge coloring of the complete graph Kn contains a blue copy of G1 or a red copy of G2. In 1983, Erdos conjectured that there is an absolute constant c such that R(G) = R(G,G) < 2c p m for any graph G with m edges and no isolated vertices. Recently this conjecture was proved by B. Sudakov. In this note, using the Sudakovs ideas we give an extension of his result and some interesting corollaries.

Distribution of components in the k-nearest neighbour random geometric graph for k below the connectivity threshold
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let S_{n,k} denote the random geometric graph obtained by placing points inside a square of area n according to a Poisson point process of intensity 1 and joining each such point to the k=k(n) points of the process nearest to it. In this paper we show that if Pr(S_{n,k} connected) > n^{-γ_1} then the probability that S_{n,k} contains a pair of `small' components `close' to each other is o(n^{-c_1}) (in a precise sense of `small' and 'close'), for some absolute constants γ_1>0 and c_1 >0. This answers a question of Walters. (A similar result was independently obtained by Balister.) As an application of our result, we show that the distribution of the connected components of S_{n,k} below the connectivity threshold is asymptotically Poisson.
The maximum number of faces of the Minkowski sum of three convex polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive tight expressions for the maximum number of $k$-faces, $0\le k\le d-1$, of the Minkowski sum, $P_1+P_2+P_3$, of three $d$-dimensional convex polytopes $P_1$, $P_2$ and $P_3$, as a function of the number of vertices of the polytopes, for any $d\ge 2$. Expressing the Minkowski sum of the three polytopes as a section of their Cayley polytope $\mathcal{C}$, the problem of counting the number of $k$-faces of $P_1+P_2+P_3$, reduces to counting the number of $(k+2)$-faces of the subset of $\mathcal{C}$ comprising of the faces that contain at least one vertex from each $P_i$. In two dimensions our expressions reduce to known results, while in three dimensions, the tightness of our bounds follows by exploiting known tight bounds for the number of faces of $r$ $d$-polytopes, where $r\ge d$. For $d\ge 4$, the maximum values are attained when $P_1$, $P_2$ and $P_3$ are $d$-polytopes, whose vertex sets are chosen appropriately from three distinct $d$-dimensional moment-like curves.

2-Resonant fullerenes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A fullerene graph $F$ is a planar cubic graph with exactly 12 pentagonal faces and other hexagonal faces. A set $\mathcal{H}$ of disjoint hexagons of $F$ is called a resonant pattern (or sextet pattern) if $F$ has a perfect matching $M$ such that every hexagon in $\mathcal{H}$ is $M$-alternating. $F$ is said to be $k$-resonant if any $i$ ($0\leq i\leq k$) disjoint hexagons of $F$ form a resonant pattern. It was known that each fullerene graph is 1-resonant and all 3-resonant fullerenes are only the nine graphs. In this paper, we show that the fullerene graphs which do not contain the subgraph $L$ or $R$ as illustrated in Fig. 1 are 2-resonant except for the specific eleven graphs. This result implies that each IPR fullerene is 2-resonant.
