Asymptotic shapes with free boundaries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study limit shapes for dimer models on domains of the hexagonal lattice with free boundary conditions. This is equivalent to the large deviation phenomenon for a random stepped surface over domains fixed only at part of the boundary.

Refined open non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for small crepant resolutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to study an analog of non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas theory corresponding to the refined topological vertex for small crepant resolutions of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We define the invariants using dimer models and provide "wall-crossing" formulas. In particular, we get normalized generating functions which are unchanged under "wall-crossing".

Domino tilings with diagonal impurities
This paper studies the dimer model on the dual graph of the square-octagon lattice, which can be viewed as the domino tilings with impurities in some sense. In particular, under a certain boundary condition, we give an exact formula representing the probability of finding an impurity at a given site in a uniformly random dimer configuration in terms of simple random walks on the square lattice.

Topological Phase Transitions and Holonomies in the Dimer Model
Published in J.Phys.A42:012002,2009 • View PublicationBIB
We demonstrate that the classical dimer model defined on a toroidal hexagonal lattice acquires holonomy phases in the thermodynamic limit. When all activities are equal the lattice sizes must be considered mod 6 in which case the finite size corrections to the bulk partition function correspond to a massless Dirac Fermion in the presence of a flat connection with nontrivial holonomy. For general bond activities we find that the phase transition in this model is a topological one, where the torus degenerates and its modular parameter becomes real at the critical temperature. We argue that these features are generic to bipartite dimer models and we present a more general lattice whose continuum partition function is that of a massive Dirac Fermion.

Combinatorics of the Dimer Model on a Strip
In this note, we give a closed formula for the partition function of the dimer model living on a (2 x n) strip of squares or hexagons on the torus for arbitrary even n. The result is derived in two ways, by using a Potts model like description for the dimers, and via a recursion relation that was obtained from a map to a 1D monomer-dimer system. The problem of finding the number of perfect matchings can also be translated to the problem of finding a minmal feedback arc set on the dual graph.

John Michael Hammersley (1920-2004)
Published • View PublicationBIB
In writing this biographical memoir of John Hammersley, we have tried to communicate something of the character of the person, and of the impact of his scientific achievements across lattice models (for example, percolation, self-avoiding walks, first-passage percolation, dimer models), stochastic processes (including subadditive ergodic theory), Monte Carlo methods, applied probability, statistics, and other areas to which he contributed. There is also an extended account of his earlier life, taken from autobiographical notes written around 1994, together with a list of his published work.

Critical resonance in the non-intersecting lattice path model
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields 130(3):289--318, 2004 • View PublicationBIB
We study the phase transition in the honeycomb dimer model (equivalently, monotone non-intersecting lattice path model). At the critical point the system has a strong long-range dependence; in particular, periodic boundary conditions give rise to a ``resonance'' phenomenon, where the partition function and other properties of the system depend sensitively on the shape of the domain.

Non-intersecting Paths, Random Tilings and Random Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate certain measures induced by families of non-intersecting paths in domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, rhombus tilings of an abc-hexagon, a dimer model on a cylindrical brick lattice and a growth model. The measures obtained, e.g. the Krawtchouk and Hahn ensembles, have the same structure as the eigenvalue measures in random matrix theory like GUE, which can in fact be obtained from non-intersecting Brownian motions. The derivations of the measures are based on the Karlin-McGregor or Lindström-Gessel-Viennot method. We use the measure to show some asymptotic results for the models.

A variational principle for domino tilings
Published in Journal of the AMS 14 (2001), 297-346 • View PublicationBIB
We formulate and prove a variational principle (in the sense of thermodynamics) for random domino tilings, or equivalently for the dimer model on a square grid. This principle states that a typical tiling of an arbitrary finite region can be described by a function that maximizes an entropy integral. We associate an entropy to every sort of local behavior domino tilings can exhibit, and prove that almost all tilings lie within epsilon (for an appropriate metric) of the unique entropy-maximizing solution. This gives a solution to the dimer problem with fully general boundary conditions, thereby resolving an issue first raised by Kasteleyn. Our methods also apply to dimer models on other grids and their associated tiling models, such as tilings of the plane by three orientations of unit lozenges.
