Irreducibility of configurations

In a paper from 1886, Martinetti enumerated small $v_3$-configurations. One of his tools was a construction that permits to produce a $(v+1)_3$-configuration from a $v_3$-configuration. He called configurations that were not constructible in this way irreducible configurations. According to his definition, the irreducible configurations are Pappus' configuration and four infinite families of configurations. In 2005, Boben defined a simpler and more general definition of irreducibility, for which only two $v_3$-configurations, the Fano plane and Pappus' configuration, remained irreducible. The present article gives a generalization of Boben's reduction for both balanced and unbalanced $(v_r,b_k)$-configurations, and proves several general results on augmentability and reducibility. Motivation for this work is found, for example, in the counting and enumeration of configurations.
Intersection numbers for subspace designs

Intersection numbers for subspace designs are introduced and $q$-analogs of the Mendelsohn and Köhler equations are given. As an application, we are able to determine the intersection structure of a putative $q$-analog of the Fano plane for any prime power $q$. It is shown that its existence implies the existence of a $2$-$(7,3,q^4)_q$ subspace design. Furthermore, several simplified or alternative proofs concerning intersection numbers of ordinary block designs are discussed.

A Cayley Graph for a group $G$ is called normal edge-transitive if it admits an edge-transitive action of some subgroup of the Holomorph of $G$ (the normaliser of a regular copy of $G$ in $\operatorname{Sym}(G)$). We complete the classification of normal edge-transitive Cayley graphs of order a product of two primes by dealing with Cayley graphs for Frobenius groups of such orders. We determine the automorphism groups of these graphs, proving in particular that there is a unique vertex-primitive example, namely the flag graph of the Fano plane.
Spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs

In this paper we consider spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs. We give two general criteria under which such results may be deduced from `strong stability' forms of the corresponding (pure) extremal results. These results hold for the α-spectral radius defined using the α-norm for any α>1; the usual spectrum is the case α=2.
Our results imply that any hypergraph Turán problem which has the stability property and whose extremal construction satisfies some rather mild continuity assumptions admits a corresponding spectral result. A particular example is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices not containing the Fano plane, when n is sufficiently large. Another is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any graph on n vertices not containing some fixed colour-critical graph, when n is sufficiently large; this generalizes a theorem of Nikiforov who proved stronger results in the case α=2. We also obtain an α-spectral version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem on t-intersecting k-uniform hypergraphs.
Multicolor Ramsey numbers for triple systems

Given an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(H)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^r$ yields a monochromatic copy of $H$. We investigate $r_k(H)$ when $k$ grows and $H$ is fixed. For nontrivial 3-uniform hypergraphs $H$, the function $r_k(H)$ ranges from $\sqrt{6k}(1+o(1))$ to double exponential in $k$.
We observe that $r_k(H)$ is polynomial in $k$ when $H$ is $r$-partite and at least single-exponential in $k$ otherwise. Erdős, Hajnal and Rado gave bounds for large cliques $K_s^r$ with $s\ge s_0(r)$, showing its correct exponential tower growth. We give a proof for cliques of all sizes, $s>r$, using a slight modification of the celebrated stepping-up lemma of Erdős and Hajnal.
For 3-uniform hypergraphs, we give an infinite family with sub-double-exponential upper bound and show connections between graph and hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Specifically, we prove that $$r_k(K_3)\le r_{4k}(K_4^3-e)\le r_{4k}(K_3)+1,$$ where $K_4^3-e$ is obtained from $K_4^3$ by deleting an edge.
We provide some other bounds, including single-exponential bounds for $F_5=\{abe,abd,cde\}$ as well as asymptotic or exact values of $r_k(H)$ when $H$ is the bow $\{abc,ade\}$, kite $\{abc,abd\}$, tight path $\{abc,bcd,cde\}$ or the windmill $\{abc,bde,cef,bce\}$. We also determine many new "small" Ramsey numbers and show their relations to designs. For example, the lower bound for $r_6(kite)=8$ is demonstrated by decomposing the triples of $[7]$ into six partial STS (two of them are Fano planes).

Given a 3-graph H, let \ex_2(n, H) denote the maximum value of the minimum codegree of a 3-graph on n vertices which does not contain a copy of H. Let F denote the Fano plane, which is the 3-graph \{axx',ayy',azz',xyz',xy'z,x'yz,x'y'z'\}. Mubayi proved that \ex_2(n,F)=(1/2+o(1))n and conjectured that \ex_2(n, F)=\floor{n/2} for sufficiently large n. Using a very sophisticated quasi-randomness argument, Keevash proved Mubayi's conjecture. Here we give a simple proof of Mubayi's conjecture by using a class of 3-graphs that we call rings. We also determine the Turán density of the family of rings.

In this article, we study the divisor classes of del Pezzo surfaces, which are written as the sum of distinct lines with fixed intersection according to the inscribed simplexes and crosspolytopes in Gosset polytopes. We introduce the k-Steiner system and cornered simplexes, and characterize the configurations of inscribed m(<4)-simplexes with them. Higher dimensional inscribed m(3<m)-simplexes exist in 4_{21} in the Picard group of del Pezzo surface S_{8} of degree 1.The configurations of 4- and 7-simplexes are related to rulings in S_{8}. And the configurations of 5- and 6-simplexes correspond the skew 3-lines and skew 7-lines in S_{8}. In particular, the seven lines in a 6-simplex produce a Fano plane. We also study the inscribed crosspolytopes and hypercubes in the Gosset polytopes.
On a $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph
The notion of a $\mathcal C$-ultrahomogeneous graph, due to Isaksen et al., is adapted for digraphs, and subsequently a strongly connected $\vec{C}_4$-ultrahomogeneous oriented graph on 168 vertices and 126 pairwise arc-disjoint 4-cycles is presented, with regular indegree and outdegree 3 and no circuits of lengths 2 and 3, by altering a definition of the Coxeter graph via pencils of ordered lines of the Fano plane in which pencils are replaced by ordered pencils.
SQS-graphs of Solov'eva-Phelps codes
A binary extended 1-perfect code $\mathcal C$ folds over its kernel via the Steiner quadruple systems associated with its codewords. The resulting folding, proposed as a graph invariant for $\mathcal C$, distinguishes among the 361 nonlinear codes $\mathcal C$ of kernel dimension $κ$ obtained via Solov'eva-Phelps doubling construction, where $9\geqκ\geq 5$. Each of the 361 resulting graphs has most of its nonloop edges expressible in terms of lexicographically ordered quarters of products of classes from extended 1-perfect partitions of length 8 (as classified by Phelps) and loops mostly expressible in terms of the lines of the Fano plane.
Counting substructures II: triple systems

For various triple systems $F$, we give tight lower bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a triple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. These are the first such results for hypergraphs, and extend earlier theorems of Bollobás, Frankl, Füredi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits, and Sudakov who proved that there is one copy of $F$.
A sample result is the following: Füredi-Simonovits and independently Keevash-Sudakov settled an old conjecture of Sós by proving that the maximum number of triples in an $n$ vertex triple system (for $n$ sufficiently large and even) that contains no copy of the Fano plane is $p(n)={n/2 \choose 2}n.$
We prove that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q \le cn^2$, then every $n$ vertex triple system with $p(n)+q$ edges contains at least $6q({n/2 \choose 4}+(n/2 -3){n/2 \choose 3}$$ copies of the Fano plane. This is sharp for $q\le n/2-2$.
Our proofs use the recently proved hypergraph removal lemma and stability results for the corresponding Turán problem.

In unpublished work, Geelen proved that a matroid is near-regular if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to: U2,5; U3,5; the Fano plane and its dual; the non-Fano and its dual; the single-element deletion of AG(2,3), its dual, and the matroid obtained from it with a Delta-Y operation; and P8. We provide a proof of this characterization.
A hypergraph regularity method for generalised Turan problems

We describe a method that we believe may be foundational for a comprehensive theory of generalised Turan problems. The cornerstone of our approach is a quasirandom counting lemma for quasirandom hypergraphs, which extends the standard counting lemma by not only counting copies of a particular configuration but also showing that these copies are evenly distributed. We demonstrate the power of the method by proving a conjecture of Mubayi on the codegree threshold of the Fano plane, that any 3-graph on n vertices for which every pair of vertices is contained in more than n/2 edges must contain a Fano plane, for n sufficiently large. For projective planes over fields of odd size q we show that the codegree threshold is between n/2-q+1 and n/2, but for PG_2(4) we find the somewhat surprising phenomenon that the threshold is less than (1/2-c)n for some small c>0. We conclude by setting out a program for future developments of this method to tackle other problems.
Pythagorean Partition-Regularity and Ordered Triple Systems with the Sum Property
Is it possible to color the naturals with finitely many colors so that no Pythagorean triple is monochromatic? This question is even open for two colors. A natural strategy is to show that some small nonbipartite triple systems cannot be realized as a family of Pythagorean triples. It suffices to consider partial triple systems (PTS's), and it is therefore natural to consider the Fano plane, the smallest nonbipartite PTS. We show that the Pythagorean triples do not contain any Fano plane. In fact, our main result is that a much larger family of "ordered" triple systems (viz. those with a certain "sum property") do not contain any Steiner triple system (STS).
On a {K_4,K_{2,2,2}}-ultrahomogeneous graph

The existence of a connected 12-regular $\{K_4,K_{2,2,2}\}$-ultrahomogeneous graph $G$ is established, (i.e. each isomorphism between two copies of $K_4$ or $K_{2,2,2}$ in $G$ extends to an automorphism of $G$), with the 42 ordered lines of the Fano plane taken as vertices. This graph $G$ can be expressed in a unique way both as the edge-disjoint union of 42 induced copies of $K_4$ and as the edge-disjoint union of 21 induced copies of $K_{2,2,2}$, with no more copies of $K_4$ or $K_{2,2,2}$ existing in $G$. Moreover, each edge of $G$ is shared by exactly one copy of $K_4$ and one of $K_{2,2,2}$. While the line graphs of $d$-cubes, ($3\le d\in\ZZ$), are $\{K_d, K_{2,2}\}$-ultrahomogeneous, $G$ is not even line-graphical. In addition, the chordless 6-cycles of $G$ are seen to play an interesting role and some self-dual configurations associated to $G$ with 2-arc-transitive, arc-transitive and semisymmetric Levi graphs are considered.
