Lines in hypergraphs
Published in Combinatorica 33 (2013), 633-654 • View PublicationBIB
One of the De Bruijn - Erdos theorems deals with finite hypergraphs where every two vertices belong to precisely one hyperedge. It asserts that, except in the perverse case where a single hyperedge equals the whole vertex set, the number of hyperedges is at least the number of vertices and the two numbers are equal if and only if the hypergraph belongs to one of simply described families, near-pencils and finite projective planes. Chen and Chvatal proposed to define the line uv in a 3-uniform hypergraph as the set of vertices that consists of u, v, and all w such that {u,v,w} is a hyperedge. With this definition, the De Bruijn - Erdos theorem is easily seen to be equivalent to the following statement: If no four vertices in a 3-uniform hypergraph carry two or three hyperedges, then, except in the perverse case where one of the lines equals the whole vertex set, the number of lines is at least the number of vertices and the two numbers are equal if and only if the hypergraph belongs to one of two simply described families. Our main result eneralizes this statement by allowing any four vertices to carry three hyperedges (but keeping two forbidden): the conclusion remains the same except that a third simply described family, complements of Steiner triple systems, appears in the extremal case.

On the rank function of a differential poset
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 19 (2012), no. 2, P13, 17 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study $r$-differential posets, a class of combinatorial objects introduced in 1988 by the first author, which gathers together a number of remarkable combinatorial and algebraic properties, and generalizes important examples of ranked posets, including the Young lattice. We first provide a simple bijection relating differential posets to a certain class of hypergraphs, including all finite projective planes, which are shown to be naturally embedded in the initial ranks of some differential poset. As a byproduct, we prove the existence, if and only if $r\geq 6$, of $r$-differential posets nonisomorphic in any two consecutive ranks but having the same rank function. We also show that the Interval Property, conjectured by the second author and collaborators for several sequences of interest in combinatorics and combinatorial algebra, in general fails for differential posets. In the second part, we prove that the rank function $p_n$ of any arbitrary $r$-differential poset has nonpolynomial growth; namely, $p_n\gg n^ae^{2\sqrt{rn}},$ a bound very close to the Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotic formula that holds in the special case of Young's lattice. We conclude by posing several open questions.

A survey of the different types of vector space partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\it vector space partition} is here a collection $\mathcal P$ of subspaces of a finite vector space $V(n,q)$, of dimension $n$ over a finite field with $q$ elements, with the property that every non zero vector is contained in a unique member of $\mathcal P$. Vector space partitions relates to finite projective planes, design theory and error correcting codes. In the first part of the talk I will discuss some relations between vector space partitions and other branches of mathematics. The other part of the talk contains a survey of known results on the type of a vector space partition, more precisely: the theorem of Beutelspacher and Heden on $\mathrm{T}$-partitions, rather recent results of El-Zanati et al. on the different types that appear in the spaces V(n,2), for $n\leq8$, a result of Heden and Lehmann on vector space partitions and maximal partial spreads including their new necessary condition for the existence of a vector space partition, and furthermore, I will give a theorem of Heden on the length of the tail of a vector space partition. Finally, I will also give a few historical remarks.

Eleven Unit Distance Embeddings of the Heawood Graph
In this note we present eleven unit distance embeddings of the Heawood graph, i.e. the point-line incidence graph of the finite projective plane of order two, by way of pictures and 15 digit approximations of the coordinates of the vertices. These together with the defining algebraic equations suffice to calculate arbitrarily exact approximations for the exact embeddings, and so to show that the Heawood graph indeed is a unit-distance graph. Thus we refute a "suspicion" of V. Chvatal from 1972.

Non-representability of finite projective planes by convex sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that there is no d such that all finite projective planes can be represented by convex sets in R^d, answering a question of Alon, Kalai, Matousek, and Meshulam. Here, if P is a projective plane with lines l_1,...,l_n, a representation of P by convex sets in R^d is a collection of convex sets C_1,...,C_n in R^d such that C_{i_1},...,C_{i_k} have a common point if and only if the corresponding lines l_{i_1},...,l_{i_k} have a common point in P. The proof combines a positive-fraction selection lemma of Pach with a result of Alon on "expansion" of finite projective planes. As a corollary, we show that for every $d$ there are 2-collapsible simplicial complexes that are not d-representable, strengthening a result of Matousek and the author.

MPLS = Mutually Projective Latin Squares
We will see that every finite projective plane of order k > 1 gives rise to a complete set of (k-1) MPLS (= mutually projective latin squares) of order k and by reversing the process we can construct a finite projective plane of order k when a complete set of (k-1) MPLS of order k is given.

A note on edge-colourings avoiding rainbow K_4 and monochromatic K_m
Published in Electronic J. Comb. 16, 1 (2009), N19 • Search Publication
We study the mixed Ramsey number maxR(n,K_m,K_r), defined as the maximum number of colours in an edge-colouring of the complete graph K_n, such that K_n has no monochromatic complete subgraph on m vertices and no rainbow complete subgraph on r vertices. Improving an upper bound of Axenovich and Iverson, we show that maxR(n,K_m,K_4) <= n^{3/2}\sqrt{2m} for all m >= 3. Further, we discuss a possible way to improve their lower bound on maxR(n,K_4,K_4) based on incidence graphs of finite projective planes.

Transitive projective planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A long-standing conjecture is that any transitive finite projective plane is Desarguesian. We make a contribution towards a proof of this conjecture by showing that a group acting transitively on the the points of a non-Desarguesianprojective plane must not contain any components.
The Mathieu group $M_{12}$ and its pseudogroup extension $M_{13}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a construction of the Mathieu group $M_{12}$ using a game reminiscent of Loyd's ``15-puzzle''. The elements of $M_{12}$ are realized as permutations on~12 of the~13 points of the finite projective plane of order~3. There is a natural extension to a ``pseudogroup'' $M_{13}$ acting on all~13 points, which exhibits a limited form of sextuple transitivity. Another corollary of the construction is a metric, akin to that induced by a Cayley graph, on both $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$. We develop these results, and extend them to the double covers and automorphism groups of $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$, using the ternary Golay code and $12 \x 12$ Hadamard matrices. In addition, we use experimental data on the quasi-Cayley metric to gain some insight into the structure of these groups and pseudogroups.

We describe some combinatorial problems in finite projective planes and indicate how Rédei's theory of lacunary polynomials can be applied to them.
