Convergence of graphs with intermediate density
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a notion of graph convergence that interpolates between the Benjamini--Schramm convergence of bounded degree graphs and the dense graph convergence developed by László Lovász and his coauthors. We prove that spectra of graphs, and also some important graph parameters such as numbers of colorings or matchings, behave well in convergent graph sequences. Special attention is given to graph sequences of large essential girth, for which asymptotics of coloring numbers are explicitly calculated. We also treat numbers of matchings in approximately regular graphs. We introduce tentative limit objects that we call graphonings because they are common generalizations of graphons and graphings. Special forms of these, called Hausdorff and Euclidean graphonings, involve geometric measure theory. We construct Euclidean graphonings that provide limits of hypercubes and of finite projective planes, and, more generally, of a wide class of regular sequences of large essential girth. For any convergent sequence of large essential girth, we construct weaker limit objects: an involution invariant probability measure on the sub-Markov space of consistent measure sequences (this is unique), or an acyclic reversible sub-Markov kernel on a probability space (non-unique). We also pose some open problems.

Equiangular tight frames from hyperovals
Published • View PublicationBIB
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a set of equal norm vectors in a Euclidean space whose coherence is as small as possible, equaling the Welch bound. Also known as Welch-bound-equality sequences, such frames arise in various applications, such as waveform design, quantum information theory, compressed sensing and algebraic coding theory. ETFs seem to be rare, and only a few methods of constructing them are known. In this paper, we present a new infinite family of complex ETFs that arises from hyperovals in finite projective planes. In particular, we give the first ever construction of a complex ETF of 76 vectors in a space of dimension 19. Recently, a computer-assisted approach was used to show that real ETFs of this size do not exist, resolving a longstanding open problem in this field. Our construction is a modification of a previously known technique for constructing ETFs from balanced incomplete block designs.

On a problem of Neumann
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture widely attributed to Neumann is that all finite non-desarguesian projective planes contain a Fano subplane. In this note, we show that any finite projective plane of even order which admits an orthogonal polarity contains a Fano subplane. The number of planes of order less than $n$ previously known to contain a Fano subplane was $O(\log n)$, whereas the number of planes of order less than $n$ that our theorem applies to is not bounded above by any polynomial in $n$.

Stable Degeneracies for Ising Models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and consider the notion of stable degeneracies of translation invariant energy functions for finite Ising models. By this term we mean the lack of injectivity that cannot be lifted by changing the interaction. We show that besides the symmetry-induced degeneracies, related to spin flip, translation and reflection, there exist additional stable degeneracies, due to more subtle symmetries. One such symmetry is the one of the Singer group of a finite projective plane. Others are described by combinatorial relations akin to trace identities. Our results resemble traits of the length spectrum for closed geodesics on a Riemannian surface of constant negative curvature. There stable degeneracy is defined w.r.t. Teichmüller space as parameter space.

An algebraic approach to finite projective planes
Published in J. of Algebraic Combinatorics 43 (2016), no. 3, 495--519 • View PublicationBIB
A finite projective plane, or more generally a finite linear space, has an associated incidence complex that gives rise to two natural algebras: the Stanley-Reisner ring $R/I_Λ$ and the inverse system algebra $R/I_Δ$. We give a careful study of both of these algebras. Our main results are a full description of the graded Betti numbers of both algebras in the more general setting of linear spaces (giving the result for the projective planes as a special case), and a classification of the characteristics in which the inverse system algebra associated to a finite projective plane has the Weak or Strong Lefschetz Property.

When are finite projective planes magic?
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article studies a generalization of magic squares to finite projective planes. In traditional magic squares the entries come from the natural numbers. This does not work for finite projective planes, so we instead use Abelian groups. For each finite projective plane we demonstrate a small group over which the plane can labeled magically. In the prime order case we classify all groups over which the projective plane can be made magic.

Cyclotomic difference sets in finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical problem of whether $m$th-powers with or without zero in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ form a difference set has been extensively studied, and is related to many topics, such as flag transitive finite projective planes. In this paper new necessary and sufficient conditions are established including those via a system of polynomial equations on Gauss sums. The author thereby solves the problem for even $q$ which is neglected in the literature, and extends the nonexistence list for even $m$ up to $22$. Moreover, conjectures toward the complete classification are posed.

Poncelet's Theorem in the four nonisomorphic finite projective planes of order 9
We study Poncelet's Theorem in the four non-isomorphic finite projective planes of order 9. Among these planes, only the Desarguesian plane turns out to be a Poncelet plane, while the other three planes which are constructed over the miniquaternion near-field of order 9, are not. This gives a complete discussion of Poncelet's Theorem in finite projective planes of order 9.
Domination in designs
We commence the study of domination in the incidence graphs of combinatorial designs. Let $D$ be a combinatorial design and denote by $γ(D)$ the domination number of the incidence (Levy) graph of $D$. We obtain a number of results about the domination numbers of various kinds of designs. For instance, a finite projective plane of order $n$, which is a symmetric $(n^{2}+n+1,n+1,1)$-design, has $γ=2n$. %We also show that for any symmetric $(v,k,λ)$-design it holds that $γ\leq 2k$. We study at depth the domination numbers of Steiner systems and in particular of Steiner triple systems. We show that a $STS(v)$ has $γ\geq \frac{2}{3}v-1$ and also obtain a number of upper bounds. The tantalizing conjecture that all Steiner triple systems on $v$ vertices have the same domination number is proposed and is verified up to $v \leq 15$. The structure of minimal dominating sets is also investigated, both for its own sake and as a tool in deriving lower bounds on $γ$. Finally, a number of open questions are proposed.

Exceptional planar polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Planar functions are special functions from a finite field to itself that give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. We consider polynomials over a finite field $K$ that induce planar functions on infinitely many extensions of $K$; we call such polynomials exceptional planar. Exceptional planar monomials have been recently classified. In this paper we establish a partial classification of exceptional planar polynomials. This includes results for the classical planar functions on finite fields of odd characteristic and for the recently proposed planar functions on finite fields of characteristic two.

Graphs Embedded into Finite Projective Planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study embeddings of graphs in finite projective planes, and present related results for some families of graphs including complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. We also make connections between embeddings of graphs and the existence of certain substructures in a plane, such as Baer subplanes and arcs.

Low-degree planar monomials in characteristic two
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics 42 (2015), 695-699 • View PublicationBIB
Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They exist only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced an even characteristic analogue which has similar applications. In this paper we determine all planar functions on F_q of the form c-->uc^t, where q is a power of 2, t is an integer with 0<t<=q^{1/4}, and u is a nonzero element of F_q. This settles and sharpens a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou.

Embedding cycles in finite planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define and study embeddings of cycles in finite affine and projective planes. We show that for all $k$, $3\le k\le q^2$, a $k$-cycle can be embedded in any affine plane of order $q$. We also prove a similar result for finite projective planes: for all $k$, $3\le k\le q^2+q+1$, a $k$-cycle can be embedded in any projective plane of order $q$.

New pseudo-planar binomials in characteristic two and related schemes
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography, 76 (2015), 345-360 • View PublicationBIB
Planar functions in odd characteristic were introduced by Dembowski and Ostrom in order to construct finite projective planes in 1968. They were also used in the constructions of DES-like iterated ciphers, error-correcting codes, and signal sets. Recently, a new notion of pseudo-planar functions in even characteristic was proposed by Zhou. These new pseudo-planar functions, as an analogue of planar functions in odd characteristic, also bring about finite projective planes. There are three known infinite families of pseudo-planar monomial functions constructed by Schmidt and Zhou, and Scherr and Zieve. In this paper, three new classes of pseudo-planar binomials are provided. Moreover, we find that each pseudo-planar function gives an association scheme which is defined on a Galois ring.

Irreducible subshifts associated with $\tilde A_2$ buildings
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 103 (2003), 91-104 • Search Publication
Let $Γ$ be a group of type rotating automorphisms of a building $\cB$ of type $\widetilde A_2$, and suppose that $Γ$ acts freely and transitively on the vertex set of $\cB$. The apartments of $\cB$ are tiled by triangles, labelled according to $Γ$-orbits. Associated with these tilings there is a natural subshift of finite type, which is shown to be irreducible. The key element in the proof is a combinatorial result about finite projective planes.

Some planar monomials in characteristic 2
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 18 (2014), 723-729 • View PublicationBIB
Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They were originally defined only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced a definition in even characteristic which yields similar applications. In this paper we show that certain functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ are planar, which proves a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou. The key to our proof is a new result about the $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$-rational points on the degree-$(q-1)$ Fermat curve $x^{q-1}+y^{q-1}=z^{q-1}$.

Planar functions over fields of characteristic two
Published • View PublicationBIB
Classical planar functions are functions from a finite field to itself and give rise to finite projective planes. They exist however only for fields of odd characteristic. We study their natural counterparts in characteristic two, which we also call planar functions. They again give rise to finite projective planes, as recently shown by the second author. We give a characterisation of planar functions in characteristic two in terms of codes over $\mathbb{Z}_4$. We then specialise to planar monomial functions $f(x)=cx^t$ and present constructions and partial results towards their classification. In particular, we show that $t=1$ is the only odd exponent for which $f(x)=cx^t$ is planar (for some nonzero $c$) over infinitely many fields. The proof techniques involve methods from algebraic geometry.

Planar functions and perfect nonlinear monomials over finite fields
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography 75 (2015), 71-80 • View PublicationBIB
The study of finite projective planes involves planar functions, namely, functions f : F_q --> F_q such that, for each nonzero a in F_q, the function c --> f(c+a) - f(c) is a bijection on F_q. Planar functions are also used in the construction of DES-like cryptosystems, where they are called perfect nonlinear functions. We determine all planar functions on F_q of the form c --> c^t, under the assumption that q >= (t-1)^4. This implies two conjectures of Hernando, McGuire and Monserrat. Our arguments also yield a new proof of a conjecture of Segre and Bartocci from 1971 about monomial hyperovals in finite Desarguesian projective planes.

Resolving sets and semi-resolving sets in finite projective planes
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 19, Issue 4 (2012) • Search Publication
We show that the metric dimension of a finite projective plane of order $q\geq 23$ is $4q-4$, and describe all resolving sets of that size. Let $τ_2$ denote the size of the smallest double blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, the Desarguesian projective plane of order $q$. We prove that for a semi-resolving set $S$ in the incidence graph of $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, $|S|\geq \min \{2q+q/4-3, τ_2-2\}$ holds. In particular, if $q\geq9$ is a square, then the smallest semi-resolving set in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ has size $2q+2\sqrt{q}$.
Automorphisms and opposition in twin buildings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that every automorphism of a thick twin building interchanging the halves of the building maps some residue to an opposite one. Furthermore we show that no automorphism of a locally finite 2-spherical twin building of rank at least 3 maps every residue of one fixed type to an opposite. The main ingredient of the proof is a lemma that states that every duality of a thick finite projective plane admits an absolute point, i.e., a point mapped onto an incident line. Our results also hold for all finite irreducible spherical buildings of rank at least 3, and as a consequence we deduce that every involution of a thick irreducible finite spherical building of rank at least 3 has a fixed residue.
