Third case of the Cyclic Coloring Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Cyclic Coloring Conjecture asserts that the vertices of every plane graph with maximum face size D can be colored using at most 3D/2 colors in such a way that no face is incident with two vertices of the same color. The Cyclic Coloring Conjecture has been proven only for two values of D: the case D=3 is equivalent to the Four Color Theorem and the case D=4 is equivalent to Borodin's Six Color Theorem, which says that every graph that can be drawn in the plane with each edge crossed by at most one other edge is 6-colorable. We prove the case D=6 of the conjecture.
Iterated claws have real-rooted genus polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the genus polynomials of the graphs called iterated claws are real-rooted. This continues our work directed toward the 25-year-old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. We have previously established log-concavity for sequences of graphs constructed by iterative vertex-amalgamation or iterative edge-amalgamation of graphs that satisfy a commonly observable condition on their partitioned genus distributions, even though it had been proved previously that iterative amalgamation does not always preserve real-rootedness of the genus polynomial of the iterated graph. In this paper, the iterated topological operations are adding a claw and adding a 3-cycle, rather than vertex- or edge-amalgamation. Our analysis here illustrates some advantages of employing a matrix representation of the transposition of a set of productions.
Log-concavity of the genus polynomials of Ringel ladders
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Ringel ladder can be formed by a self-bar-amalgamation operation on a symmetric ladder, that is, by joining the root vertices on its end-rungs. The present authors have previously derived criteria under which linear chains of copies of one or more graphs have log-concave genus polynomials. Herein we establish Ringel ladders as the first significant non-linear infinite family of graphs known to have log-concave genus polynomials. We construct an algebraic representation of self-bar-amalgamation as a matrix operation, to be applied to a vector representation of the partitioned genus distribution of a symmetric ladder. Analysis of the resulting genus polynomial involves the use of Chebyshev polynomials. This paper continues our quest to affirm the quarter-century-old conjecture that all graphs have log-concave genus polynomials.
Root geometry of polynomial sequences I: Type $(0,1)$
This paper is concerned with the distribution in the complex plane of the roots of a polynomial sequence $\{W_n(x)\}_{n\ge0}$ given by a recursion $W_n(x)=aW_{n-1}(x)+(bx+c)W_{n-2}(x)$, with $W_0(x)=1$ and $W_1(x)=t(x-r)$, where $a>0$, $b>0$, and $c,t,r\in\mathbb{R}$. Our results include proof of the distinct-real-rootedness of every such polynomial $W_n(x)$, derivation of the best bound for the zero-set $\{x\mid W_n(x)=0\ \text{for some $n\ge1$}\}$, and determination of three precise limit points of this zero-set. Also, we give several applications from combinatorics and topological graph theory.

Partial duality and closed 2-cell embeddings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2009 Chmutov introduced the idea of partial duality for embeddings of graphs in surfaces. We discuss some alternative descriptions of partial duality, which demonstrate the symmetry between vertices and faces. One is in terms of band decompositions, and the other is in terms of the gem (graph-encoded map) representation of an embedding. We then use these to investigate when a partial dual is a closed 2-cell embedding, in which every face is bounded by a cycle in the graph. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial dual to be closed 2-cell, and also a sufficient condition for no partial dual to be closed 2-cell.

Proper connection number and connected dominating sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The proper connection number $pc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is defined as the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges, so that every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ is connected by at least one path in $G$ such that no two adjacent edges of the path are colored the same, and such a path is called a proper path. In this paper, we show that for every connected graph with diameter 2 and minimum degree at least 2, its proper connection number is 2. Then, we give an upper bound $\frac{3n}{δ+ 1}-1$ for every connected graph of order $n$ and minimum degree $δ$. We also show that for every connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $2$, the proper connection number $pc(G)$ is upper bounded by $pc(G[D])+2$, where $D$ is a connected two-way (two-step) dominating set of $G$. Bounds of the form $pc(G)\leq 4$ or $pc(G)=2$, for many special graph classes follow as easy corollaries from this result, which include connected interval graphs, asteroidal triple-free graphs, circular arc graphs, threshold graphs and chain graphs, all with minimum degree at least $2$. Furthermore, we get the sharp upper bound 3 for the proper connection numbers of interval graphs and circular arc graphs through analyzing their structures.

On structural properties of trees with minimal atom-bond connectivity index II
The {\em atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index} is a degree-based graph topological index that found chemical applications. The problem of complete characterization of trees with minimal $ABC$ index is still an open problem. In~\cite{d-sptmabci-2014}, it was shown that trees with minimal ABC index do not contain so-called {\em $B_k$-branches}, with $k \geq 5$, and that they do not have more than four $B_4$-branches. Our main results here reveal that the number of $B_1$ and $B_2$-branches are also bounded from above by small fixed constants. Namely, we show that trees with minimal ABC index do not contain more than four $B_1$-branches and more than eleven $B_2$-branches.

Domination polynomial of generalized friendship and generalized book graphs
Let G be a simple graph of order n. The domination polynomial of a graph is the generating function of its dominating sets. We study the domination polynomials of generalized friendship graphs. We also consider book graphs formed by joining n copies of the cycle graph of order 4 with a common edge and study the domination polynomials of some generalized book graphs. In particular we examine the domination roots of these families and find the limiting curve for the roots.

Surface embedding of non-bipartite $k$-extendable graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We find the minimum number $k=μ'(Σ)$ for any surface $Σ$, such that every $Σ$-embeddable non-bipartite graph is not $k$-extendable. In particular, we construct the so-called bow-tie graphs $C_6\bowtie P_n$, and show that they are $3$-extendable. This confirms the existence of an infinite number of $3$-extendable non-bipartite graphs which can be embedded in the Klein bottle.

Enumeration of the facets of cut polytopes over some highly symmetric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We report here a computation giving the complete list of facets for the cut polytopes over several very symmetric graphs with $15-30$ edges, including $K_8$, $K_{3,3,3}$, $K_{1,4,4}$, $K_{5,5}$, some other $K_{l,m}$, $K_{1,l,m}$, $Prism_7, APrism_6$, Möbius ladder $M_{14}$, Dodecahedron, Heawood and Petersen graphs. For $K_8$, it shows that the huge lists of facets of the cut polytope $CUTP_8$ and cut cone $CUT_8$, given in [CR] is complete. We also confirm the conjecture that any facet of $CUTP_8$ is adjacent to a triangle facet. The lists of facets for $K_{1,l,m}$ with $(l,m)=(4,4),(3,5),(3,4)$ solve problems (see, for example, [Werner]) in quantum information theory.

Twin bent functions and Clifford algebras
Published in In C. Colbourn (ed.) Algebraic Design Theory and Hadamard Matrices (ADTHM 2014), Springer, 2015, pp. 189-199 • View Publication • BIB
This paper examines a pair of bent functions on $\mathbb{Z}_2^{2m}$ and their relationship to a necessary condition for the existence of an automorphism of an edge-coloured graph whose colours are defined by the properties of a canonical basis for the real representation of the Clifford algebra $\mathbb{R}_{m,m}.$ Some other necessary conditions are also briefly examined.

Local colourings and monochromatic partitions in complete bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any $2$-local colouring of the edges of the balanced complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, its vertices can be covered with at most~$3$ disjoint monochromatic paths. And, we can cover almost all vertices of any complete or balanced complete bipartite $r$-locally coloured graph with $O(r^2)$ disjoint monochromatic cycles.\\ We also determine the $2$-local bipartite Ramsey number of a path almost exactly: Every $2$-local colouring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic path on $n$ vertices.

Walk-powers and homomorphism bound of planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
As an extension of the Four-Color Theorem it is conjectured that every planar graph of odd-girth at least $2k+1$ admits a homomorphism to $PC_{2k}=(\mathbb{Z}_2^{2k}, \{e_1, e_2, ...,e_{2k}, J\})$ where $e_i$'s are standard basis and $J$ is all 1 vector. Noting that $PC_{2k}$ itself is of odd-girth $2k+1$, in this work we show that if the conjecture is true, then $PC_{2k}$ is an optimal such a graph both with respect to number of vertices and number of edges. The result is obtained using the notion of walk-power of graphs and their clique numbers. An analogous result is proved for bipartite signed planar graphs of unbalanced-girth $2k$. The work is presented on a uniform frame work of planar consistent signed graphs.

Embedding degenerate graphs of small bandwidth
We develop a tool for embedding almost spanning degenerate graphs of small bandwidth. As an application, we extend the blow-up lemma to degenerate graphs of small bandwidth, the bandwidth theorem to degenerate graphs, and make progress on a conjecture of Burr and Erdős on Ramsey number of degenerate graphs.

Matchings and Path Covers with applications to Domination in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with no isolated vertex. A matching in $G$ is a set of edges that are pairwise not adjacent in $G$, while the matching number, $α'(G)$, of $G$ is the maximum size of a matching in $G$. The path covering number, $\rm{pc}(G)$, of $G$ is the minimum number of vertex disjoint paths such that every vertex belongs to a path in the cover. We show that if $G$ has order $n$, then $α'(G) + \frac{1}{2}\rm{pc}(G) \ge \frac{n}{2}$ and we provide a constructive characterization of the graphs achieving equality in this bound. It is known that $γ(G) \le α'(G)$ and $γ_t(G) \le α'(G) + \rm{pc}(G)$, where $γ(G)$ and $γ_t(G)$ denote the domination and the total domination number of $G$. As an application of our result on the matching and path cover numbers, we show that if $G$ is a graph with $δ(G) \ge 3$, then $γ_t(G) \le α'(G) + \frac{1}{2}(\rm{pc}(G) - 1)$, and this bound is tight. A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$ if it is a dominating set of $G$ with the property that the subgraph induced by the open neighborhood of the set $S$ has no isolated vertex. The neighborhood total domination number, $γ_{\rm nt}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$. We observe that $γ(G) \le γ_{\rm nt}(G) \le γ_t(G)$. As a further application of our result on the matching and path cover numbers, we show that if $G$ is a connected graph on at least six vertices, then $γ_{\rm nt}(G) \le α'(G) + \frac{1}{2}\rm{pc}(G)$ and this bound is tight.

On traces of tensor representations of diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a set, of {\em types}, and let $ι,o:T\to\oZ_+$. A {\em $T$-diagram} is a locally ordered directed graph $G$ equipped with a function $τ:V(G)\to T$ such that each vertex $v$ of $G$ has indegree $ι(τ(v))$ and outdegree $o(τ(v))$. (A directed graph is {\em locally ordered} if at each vertex $v$, linear orders of the edges entering $v$ and of the edges leaving $v$ are specified.) Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional $\oF$-linear space, where $\oF$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A function $R$ on $T$ assigning to each $t\in T$ a tensor $R(t)\in V^{*\otimes ι(t)}\otimes V^{\otimes o(t)}$ is called a {\em tensor representation} of $T$. The {\em trace} (or {\em partition function}) of $R$ is the $\oF$-valued function $p_R$ on the collection of $T$-diagrams obtained by `decorating' each vertex $v$ of a $T$-diagram $G$ with the tensor $R(τ(v))$, and contracting tensors along each edge of $G$, while respecting the order of the edges entering $v$ and leaving $v$. In this way we obtain a {\em tensor network}. We characterize which functions on $T$-diagrams are traces, and show that each trace comes from a unique `strongly nondegenerate' tensor representation. The theorem applies to virtual knot diagrams, chord diagrams, and group representations.
Layouts of Expander Graphs
Published in Chicago J. Theoretical Computer Science 16:Article 1, 2016 • Search Publication
Bourgain and Yehudayoff recently constructed $O(1)$-monotone bipartite expanders. By combining this result with a generalisation of the unraveling method of Kannan, we construct 3-monotone bipartite expanders, which is best possible. We then show that the same graphs admit 3-page book embeddings, 2-queue layouts, 4-track layouts, and have simple thickness 2. All these results are best possible.

On triangle-free graphs of order 10 with prescribed 1-defective chromatic number
A graph is (m, k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of any subgraph induced on ver- tices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number for a graph is the least positive integer m for which the graph is (m, k)-colourable. All triangle-free graphs on 8 or fewer vertices are (2, 1)-colourable. There are exactly four triangle-free graphs of order 9 which have 1-defective chromatic number 3. We show that these four graphs appear as subgraphs in almost all triangle-free graphs of order 10 with 1-defective chromatic number equal to 3. In fact there is a unique triangle-free (3, 1)-critical graph on 10 vertices and we exhibit this graph.

On minimal triangle-free planar graphs with prescribed 1-defective chromatic number
A graph is (m,k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of the subgraph induced on the set of all vertices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number $χ_k(G)$ is the least positive integer $m$ for which graph G is (m,k)-colourable. Let f(m,k;tfp) be the smallest order of a triangle-free planar graph such that $χ_k(G)$=m. In this paper we show that f(3,1;tfp)=11.

Chromatic and flow polynomials of generalized vertex join graphs and outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A generalized vertex join of a graph is obtained by joining an arbitrary multiset of its vertices to a new vertex. We present a low-order polynomial time algorithm for finding the chromatic polynomials of generalized vertex joins of trees, and by duality we find the flow polynomials of arbitrary outerplanar graphs. We also present closed formulas for the chromatic and flow polynomials of vertex joins of cliques and cycles, otherwise known as "generalized wheel" graphs.
