We define a statistic on the graph of commutation classes of a permutation of the symmetric group which is used to show that these graphs are equipped with a ranked poset structure, with a minimum and maximum. This characterization also allows us to compute the diameter of the commutation graph for any permutation, from which the results for the longest permutation and for fully commutative permutations are recovered.
Counterexamples to the characterisation of graphs with equal independence and annihilation number

We disprove the characterisation of graphs with equal independence and annihilation number by Larson and Pepper (2011). Series of counterexamples with arbitrary number of vertices, arbitrary number of components, arbitrary large independence number and arbitrary large difference between the critical and the regular independence number are provided. Furthermore, we point out the error in the proof of the theorem. However, we show that the theorem still holds for bipartite graphs and connected claw-free graphs.
Hypergraph removal with polynomial bounds

Given a fixed $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the $F$-removal lemma states that every hypergraph with few copies of $F$ can be made $F$-free by the removal of few edges. Unfortunately, for general $F$, the constants involved are given by incredibly fast-growing Ackermann-type functions. It is thus natural to ask for which $F$ one can prove removal lemmas with polynomial bounds. One trivial case where such bounds can be obtained is when $F$ is $k$-partite. Alon proved that when $k=2$ (i.e. when dealing with graphs), only bipartite graphs have a polynomial removal lemma. Kohayakawa, Nagle and Rödl conjectured in 2002 that Alon's result can be extended to all $k>2$, namely, that the only $k$-graphs $F$ for which the hypergraph removal lemma has polynomial bounds are the trivial cases when $F$ is $k$-partite. In this paper we prove this conjecture.
Graphs of bounded twin-width are quasi-polynomially $χ$-bounded

We prove that for every $t\in \mathbb{N}$ there is a constant $γ_t$ such that every graph with twin-width at most $t$ and clique number $ω$ has chromatic number bounded by $2^{γ_t \log^{4t+3} ω}$. In other words, we prove that graph classes of bounded twin-width are quasi-polynomially $χ$-bounded. This provides a significant step towards resolving the question of Bonnet et al. [ICALP 2021] about whether they are polynomially $χ$-bounded.
The Buratti-Horak-Rosa Conjecture Holds for Some Underlying Sets of Size Three

The Buratti-Horak-Rosa Conjecture concerns the possible multisets of edge-labels of a Hamiltonian path in the complete graph with vertex labels $0, 1, \ldots, {v-1}$ under a particular induced edge-labeling. The conjecture has been shown to hold when the underlying set of the multiset has size at most~2, is a subset of $\{1,2,3,4\}$ or $\{1,2,3,5\}$, or is $\{1,2,6\}$, $\{1,2,8\}$ or $\{1,4,5\}$, as well as partial results for many other underlying sets. We use the method of growable realizations to show that the conjecture holds for each underlying set $U = \{ x,y,z \}$ when $\max(U) \leq 7$ or when $xyz \leq 24$, with the possible exception of $U = \{1,2,11\}$. We also show that for any even $x$ the validity of the conjecture for the underlying set $\{ 1,2,x \}$ follows from the validity of the conjecture for finitely many multisets with this underlying set.
Expected number of faces in a random embedding of any graph is at most linear

A random 2-cell embedding of a given graph $G$ is obtained by choosing a random local rotation around every vertex. We analyze the expected number of faces of such an embedding, which is equivalent to studying its average genus. In 1991, Stahl proved that the expected number of faces in a random embedding of an arbitrary graph of order $n$ is at most $n\log(n)$. While there are many families of graphs whose expected number of faces is $Θ(n)$, none are known where the expected number would be super-linear. This lead to the conjecture that there is a linear upper bound. In this note we confirm the conjecture by proving that for any $n$-vertex multigraph, the expected number of faces in a random 2-cell embedding is at most $n(1+H_m)$, where $m$ is the maximum edge-multiplicity and $H_m$ denotes the $m$th harmonic number. This bound is best possible up to a constant factor.
The treewidth and pathwidth of graph unions

Given two $n$-vertex graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ of bounded treewidth, is there an $n$-vertex graph $G$ of bounded treewidth having subgraphs isomorphic to $G_1$ and $G_2$? Our main result is a negative answer to this question, in a strong sense: we show that the answer is no even if $G_1$ is a binary tree and $G_2$ is a ternary tree. We also provide an extensive study of cases where such `gluing' is possible. In particular, we prove that if $G_1$ has treewidth $k$ and $G_2$ has pathwidth $\ell$, then there is an $n$-vertex graph of treewidth at most $k + 3 \ell + 1$ containing both $G_1$ and $G_2$ as subgraphs.
Parameterizing Fullerenes with Vertex Combinations
A fullerene graph can be embedded in a piecewise linear 2-manifold with each non-hexagonal carbon ring corresponding to a cone vertex. Adjacent two or three such vertices can be combined as a cluster cut out from a parent cone round a parent vertex. The locations for the combined vertices are distributed on their parent cone with certain symmetries. With proper combinations, a fullerene can be simplified to a parent structure easily to be parameterized. And then, with additional parameters for the combined vertices in each cluster, the fullerene can also be parameterized. Such parameters may be different for fullerenes from type to type, but they are able to characterize the specific shape for each type.
Combinatorial aspects of sandpile models on wheel and fan graphs

We study combinatorial aspects of the sandpile model on wheel and fan graphs, seeking bijective characterisations of the model's recurrent configurations on these families. For wheel graphs, we exhibit a bijection between these recurrent configurations and the set of subgraphs of the cycle graph which maps the level of the configuration to the number of edges of the subgraph. This bijection relies on two key ingredients. The first consists in considering a stochastic variant of the standard Abelian sandpile model (ASM), rather than the ASM itself. The second ingredient is a mapping from a given recurrent state to a canonical minimal recurrent state, exploiting similar ideas to previous studies of the ASM on complete bipartite graphs and Ferrers graphs. We also show that on the wheel graph with $2n$ vertices, the number of recurrent states with level $n$ is given by the first differences of the central Delannoy numbers. Finally, using similar tools, we exhibit a bijection between the set of recurrent configurations of the ASM on fan graphs and the set of subgraphs of the path graph containing the right-most vertex of the path. We show that these sets are also equinumerous with certain lattice paths, which we name Kimberling paths after the author of the corresponding entry in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

In this paper, we study extremal problems of Steklov eigenvalues on combinatorial graphs by extending Friedman's theory [Duke Math. J. 69 (1993), no. 3, 487--525] of nodal domains for Laplacian eigenfunctions to Steklov eigenfunctions, and solve an extremal problem for Steklov eigenvalues on combinatorial graphs that is an analogue of the extremal problem solved by Friedman [Duke Math. J. 83 (1996), no. 1, 1--18.] for Laplacian eigenvalues. More precisely, we mainly show that the minimum of the $i^{\rm th}$ Steklov eigenvalue on a connected combinatorial graph with $n$ vertices is essentially attained by a star with each arm a minimal broom when $i\not|n$, and attained by a regular comb with each tooth a minimal broom when $i|n$.
Beyond symmetry in generalized Petersen graphs

A graph is a core or unretractive if all its endomorphisms are automorphisms. Well-known examples of cores include the Petersen graph and the graph of the dodecahedron -- both generalized Petersen graphs. We characterize the generalized Petersen graphs that are cores. A simple characterization of endomorphism-transitive generalized Petersen graphs follows. This extends the characterization of vertex-transitive generalized Petersen graphs due to Frucht, Graver, and Watkins and solves a problem of Fan and Xie.
Moreover, we study generalized Petersen graphs that are (underlying graphs of) Cayley graphs of monoids. We show that this is the case for the Petersen graph, answering a recent mathoverflow question, for the Desargues graphs, and for the dodecahedron -- answering a question of Knauer and Knauer. Moreover, we characterize the infinite family of generalized Petersen graphs that are Cayley graph of a monoid with generating connection set of size two. This extends Nedela and Škoviera's characterization of generalized Petersen graphs that are group Cayley graphs and complements results of Hao, Gao, and Luo.

We investigate the maximum size of graph families on a common vertex set of cardinality $n$ such that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two members of the family satisfies some prescribed condition. We solve the problem completely for infinitely many values of $n$ when the prescribed condition is connectivity or $2$-connectivity, Hamiltonicity or the containment of a spanning star. We also investigate local conditions that can be certified by looking at only a subset of the vertex set. In these cases a capacity-type asymptotic invariant is defined and when the condition is to contain a certain subgraph this invariant is shown to be a simple function of the chromatic number of this required subgraph. This is proven using classical results from extremal graph theory. Several variants are considered and the paper ends with a collection of open problems.
Problems hard for treewidth but easy for stable gonality

We show that some natural problems that are XNLP-hard (which implies W[t]-hardness for all t) when parameterized by pathwidth or treewidth, become FPT when parameterized by stable gonality, a novel graph parameter based on optimal maps from graphs to trees. The problems we consider are classical flow and orientation problems, such as Undirected Flow with Lower Bounds (which is strongly NP-complete, as shown by Itai), Minimum Maximum Outdegree (for which W[1]-hardness for treewidth was proven by Szeider), and capacitated optimization problems such as Capacitated (Red-Blue) Dominating Set (for which W[1]-hardness was proven by Dom, Lokshtanov, Saurabh and Villanger). Our hardness proofs (that beat existing results) use reduction to a recent XNLP-complete problem (Accepting Non-deterministic Checking Counter Machine). The new easy parameterized algorithms use a novel notion of weighted tree partition with an associated parameter that we call treebreadth, inspired by Seese's notion of tree-partite graphs, as well as techniques from dynamical programming and integer linear programming.
Upper tail behavior of the number of triangles in random graphs with constant average degree

Let $N$ be the number of triangles in an Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$ on $n$ vertices with edge density $p=d/n,$ where $d>0$ is a fixed constant. It is well known that $N$ weakly converges to the Poisson distribution with mean ${d^3}/{6}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. We address the upper tail problem for $N,$ namely, we investigate how fast $k$ must grow, so that the probability of $\{N\ge k\}$ is not well approximated anymore by the tail of the corresponding Poisson variable. Proving that the tail exhibits a sharp phase transition, we essentially show that the upper tail is governed by Poisson behavior only when $k^{1/3} \log k< (\frac{3}{\sqrt{2}})^{2/3} \log n$ (sub-critical regime) as well as pin down the tail behavior when $k^{1/3} \log k> (\frac{3}{\sqrt{2}})^{2/3} \log n$ (super-critical regime). We further prove a structure theorem, showing that the sub-critical upper tail behavior is dictated by the appearance of almost $k$ vertex-disjoint triangles whereas in the supercritical regime, the excess triangles arise from a clique like structure of size approximately $(6k)^{1/3}$. This settles the long-standing upper-tail problem in this case, answering a question of Aldous, complementing a long sequence of works, spanning multiple decades, culminating in (Harel, Moussat, Samotij,'19) which analyzed the problem only in the regime $p\gg \frac{1}{n}.$ The proofs rely on several novel graph theoretical results which could have other applications.
Triangular-Grid Billiards and Plabic Graphs

Given a polygon $P$ in the triangular grid, we obtain a permutation $π_P$ via a natural billiards system in which beams of light bounce around inside of $P$. The different cycles in $π_P$ correspond to the different trajectories of light beams. We prove that \[\text{area}(P)\geq 6\text{cyc}(P)-6\quad\text{and}\quad\text{perim}(P)\geq\frac{7}{2}\text{cyc}(P)-\frac{3}{2},\] where $\text{area}(P)$ and $\text{perim}(P)$ are the (appropriately normalized) area and perimeter of $P$, respectively, and $\text{cyc}(P)$ is the number of cycles in $π_P$. The inequality concerning $\text{area}(P)$ is tight, and we characterize the polygons $P$ satisfying $\text{area}(P)=6\text{cyc}(P)-6$. These results can be reformulated in the language of Postnikov's plabic graphs as follows. Let $G$ be a connected reduced plabic graph with essential dimension $2$. Suppose $G$ has $n$ marked boundary points and $v$ (internal) vertices, and let $c$ be the number of cycles in the trip permutation of $G$. Then we have \[v\geq 6c-6\quad\text{and}\quad n\geq\frac{7}{2}c-\frac{3}{2}.\]
A note on hamiltonian cycles in $4$-tough $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graphs

Let $t>0$ be a real number and $G$ be a graph. We say $G$ is $t$-tough if for every cutset $S$ of $G$, the ratio of $|S|$ to the number of components of $G-S$ is at least $t$. The Toughness Conjecture of Chvátal, stating that there exists a constant $t_0$ such that every $t_0$-tough graph with at least three vertices is hamiltonian, is still open in general. For any given integer $k\ge 1$, a graph $G$ is $(P_2\cup kP_1)$ free if $G$ does not contain the disjoint union of $P_2$ and $k$ isolated vertices as an induced subgraph.
In this note, we show that every 4-tough and $2k$-connected $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graph with at least three vertices is hamiltonian.
This result in some sense is an "extension" of the classical Chvátal-Erdős Theorem that every $\max\{2,k\}$-connected
$(k+1)P_1$-free graph on at least three vertices is hamiltonian.

The Johnson graph $J(v, k)$ has as vertices the $k$-subsets of $\mathcal{V}=\{1,\ldots, v\}$, and two vertices are joined by an edge if their intersection has size $k-1$. An \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive code} in $J (v, k)$ is a proper vertex subset $Γ$ such that the subgroup $X$ of graph automorphisms leaving $Γ$ invariant is transitive on the set $Γ$ of `codewords', and for each codeword $Δ$, the setwise stabiliser $X_Δ$ is transitive on $Δ\times (\mathcal{V}\setminus Δ)$. We classify the \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive codes} in $J(v,k)$ for which $X$ is the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(2)$ acting as a $2$-transitive permutation group of degree $2^{2n-1}\pm 2^{n-1}$, where the stabiliser $X_Δ$ of a codeword $Δ$ is contained in a \emph{geometric} maximal subgroup of $X$. In particular, we construct two new infinite families of strongly incidence-transitive codes associated with the reducible maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(2)$.
Extremal graphs for edge blow-up of lollipops
Given a graph $H$ and an integer $p$ ($p\geq 2$), the edge blow-up $H^{p+1}$ of $H$ is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $H$ by a clique of order $(p+1)$, where the new vertices of the cliques are all distinct. The Turán numbers for edge blow-up of matchings were first studied by Erdős and Moon. Very recently some substantial progress of the extremal graphs for $H^{p+1}$ of larger $p$ has been made by Yuan. The range of Turán numbers for edge blow-up of all bipartite graphs when $p\geq 3$ and the exact Turán numbers for edge blow-up of all non-bipartite graphs when $p\geq χ(H) +1$ has been determined by Yuan (2022), where $χ(H)$ is the chromatic number of $H$. A lollipop $C_{k,\;\ell}$ is the graph obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by appending a path $P_{\ell+1}$ to one of its vertices. In this paper, we consider the extremal graphs for $C_{k,\;\ell}^{p+1}$ of the rest cases $p=2$ and $p=3$.
Pseudo-finiteness of arbitrary graphs of bounded shrub-depth
We consider classes of arbitrary (finite or infinite) graphs of bounded shrub-depth, specifically the classes $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ of arbitrary graphs that have tree models of height $d$ and $r$ labels. We show that the graphs of $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ are $\mathrm{MSO}$-pseudo-finite relative to the class $\mathrm{TM}^{\text{f}}_r(d)$ of finite graphs of $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$; that is, that every $\mathrm{MSO}$ sentence true in a graph of $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ is also true in a graph of $\mathrm{TM}^{\text{f}}_r(d)$. We also show that $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ is closed under ultraproducts and ultraroots. These results have two consequences. The first is that the index of the $\mathrm{MSO}[m]$-equivalence relation on graphs of $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ is bounded by a $(d+1)$-fold exponential in $m$. The second is that $\mathrm{TM}_r(d)$ is exactly the class of all graphs that are $\mathrm{MSO}$-pseudo-finite relative to $\mathrm{TM}^{\text{f}}_r(d)$.
Ore- and Pósa-type conditions for partitioning $2$-edge-coloured graphs into monochromatic cycles

In 2019, Letzter confirmed a conjecture of Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás and Sárközy, proving that every large $2$-edge-coloured graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $3n/4$ can be partitioned into two monochromatic cycles of different colours. Here, we propose a weaker condition on the degree sequence of $G$ to also guarantee such a partition and prove an approximate version. This resembles a similar generalisation to an Ore-type condition achieved by Barát and Sárközy.
Continuing work by Allen, Böttcher, Lang, Skokan and Stein, we also show that if $\operatorname{deg}(u) + \operatorname{deg}(v) \geq 4n/3 + o(n)$ holds for all non-adjacent vertices $u,v \in V(G)$, then all but $o(n)$ vertices can be partitioned into three monochromatic cycles.
