Edge Resolvability for Circular Ladder of Heptagons
A set $\mathbb{Y}$ of elements (vertices or edges) in space is said to be a $generator$ of a metric space if each element of the space is recognized by its distances from the elements of $\mathbb{Y}$, uniquely. The generator with minimum cardinality is known as the $basis$ of the metric space, and this cardinality is the $dimension$ of the given space. In this article, we further discuss these notions with respect to a heptagonal circular ladder. We show that for a heptagonal circular ladder $Γ_{n}$, the edge metric dimension is three and find that it equals its metric dimension. We also introduce a new family of the convex polytope graph (denoted by $Δ_{n}$) from a heptagonal circular ladder and find its metric dimension. Furthermore, we prove that the minimum generator (metric and edge metric) are independent for all of these families of the convex polytopes.

Random subcomplexes and Betti numbers of random edge ideals
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2023, Iss. 10 (2023), pp. 8832--8871 • View PublicationBIB
We study homological properties of random quadratic monomial ideals in a polynomial ring $R = {\mathbb K}[x_1, \dots x_n]$, utilizing methods from the Erdös-Rényi model of random graphs. Here for a graph $G \sim G(n, p)$ we consider the `coedge' ideal $I_G$ corresponding to the missing edges of $G$, and study Betti numbers of $R/I_G$ as $n$ tends to infinity. Our main results involve setting the edge probability $p = p(n)$ so that asymptotically almost surely the Krull dimension of $R/I_G$ is fixed. Under these conditions we establish various properties regarding the Betti table of $R/I_G$, including sharp bounds on regularity and projective dimension, and distribution of nonzero normalized Betti numbers. These results extend work of Erman and Yang, who studied such ideals in the context of conjectured phenomena in the nonvanishing of asymptotic syzygies. Along the way we establish results regarding subcomplexes of random clique complexes as well as notions of higher-dimensional vertex $k$-connectivity that may be of independent interest.

Orderenergetic, hypoenergetic and equienergetic graphs resulting from some graph operations
A graph G is said to be orderenergetic, if its energy equal to its order and it is said to be hypoenergetic if its energy less than its order. Two non-isomorphic graphs of same order are said to be equienergetic if their energies are equal. In this paper, we construct some new families of orderenergetic graphs, hypoenergetic graphs, equienergetic graphs, equiorderenergetic graphs and equihypoenergetic graphs.

On a theorem of Nosal
Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and spectral radius $λ_{1}$. Let $bk\left( G\right) $ stand for the maximal number of triangles with a common edge in $G$. In 1970 Nosal proved that if $λ_{1}^{2}>m,$ then $G$ contains a triangle. In this paper we show that the same premise implies that \[ bk\left( G\right) >\frac{1}{12}\sqrt[4]{m}. \] This result settles a conjecture of Zhai, Lin, and Shu. Write $λ_{2}$ for the second largest eigenvalue of $G$. Recently, Lin, Ning, and Wu showed that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph of order at least three, then \[ λ_{1}^{2}+λ_{2}^{2}\leq m, \] thereby settling the simplest case of a conjecture of Bollobás and the author. We give a simpler proof of their result.
The DP Color Function of Joins and Vertex-Gluings of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. As the analogue of the chromatic polynomial $P(G,m)$, the DP color function of a graph $G$, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, counts the minimum number of DP-colorings over all possible $m$-fold covers. Chromatic polynomials for joins and vertex-gluings of graphs are well understood, but the effect of these graph operations on the DP color function is not known. In this paper we make progress on understanding the DP color function of the join of a graph with a complete graph and vertex-gluings of certain graphs. We also develop tools to study the DP color function under these graph operations, and we study the threshold (smallest $m$) beyond which the DP color function of a graph constructed with these operations equals its chromatic polynomial.

Embedding Grid Graphs on Surfaces
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, vol. 38, Article number 87 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we analyze embeddings of grid graphs on orientable surfaces. We determine the genus of a large class of k-dimensional grid graphs and effective two-sided bounds for the genus of any 3-dimensional grid graph, both in terms of a grid graph's combinatorics. As an application, we provide a complete classification of planar and toroidal grid graphs. Our work requires a variety of combinatorial arguments to determine effective lower bounds on the genus of a grid graph, along with explicitly constructing embeddings of grid graphs on surfaces to determine effective upper bounds on their genera.

The number of perfect matchings, and the nesting properties, of random regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the number of perfect matchings in ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ is asymptotically normal when $n$ is even, $d\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$, and $d=O(n^{1/7}/\log^2 n)$. This is the first distributional result of spanning subgraphs of ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ when $d\to\infty$. Moreover, we prove that ${\mathcal G}(n,d-1)$ and ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ can be coupled so that ${\mathcal G}(n,d-1)$ is a subgraph of ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ with high probability when $d\to\infty$ and $d=o(n^{1/3})$. Further, if $d=Ω(\log^7 n)$, $d=O(n^{1/7}/\log^2n)$, and $d\le d'\le n-1$ then ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ and ${\mathcal G}(n,d')$ can be coupled so that asymptotically almost surely ${\mathcal G}(n,d)$ is a subgraph of ${\mathcal G}(n,d')$.

On the generalized $\vartheta$-number and related problems for highly symmetric graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is an in-depth analysis of the generalized $\vartheta$-number of a graph. The generalized $\vartheta$-number, $\vartheta_k(G)$, serves as a bound for both the $k$-multichromatic number of a graph and the maximum $k$-colorable subgraph problem. We present various properties of $\vartheta_k(G)$, such as that the sequence $(\vartheta_k(G))_k$ is increasing and bounded from above by the order of the graph $G$. We study $\vartheta_k(G)$ when $G$ is the strong, disjunction or Cartesian product of two graphs. We provide closed form expressions for the generalized $\vartheta$-number on several classes of graphs including the Kneser graphs, cycle graphs, strongly regular graphs and orthogonality graphs. Our paper provides bounds on the product and sum of the $k$-multichromatic number of a graph and its complement graph, as well as lower bounds for the $k$-multichromatic number on several graph classes including the Hamming and Johnson graphs.
Robust Connectivity of Graphs on Surfaces
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 36(2), 1416-1435, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Λ(T)$ denote the set of leaves in a tree $T$. One natural problem is to look for a spanning tree $T$ of a given graph $G$ such that $Λ(T)$ is as large as possible. This problem is called maximum leaf number, and it is a well-known NP-hard problem. Throughout recent decades, this problem has received considerable attention, ranging from pure graph theoretic questions to practical problems related to the construction of wireless networks. Recently, a similar but stronger notion was defined by Bradshaw, Masařík, and Stacho [Flexible List Colorings in Graphs with Special Degeneracy Conditions, ISAAC 2020]. They introduced a new invariant for a graph $G$, called the robust connectivity and written $κ_ρ(G)$, defined as the minimum value $\frac{|R \cap Λ(T)|}{|R|}$ taken over all nonempty subsets $R\subseteq V(G)$, where $T = T(R)$ is a spanning tree on $G$ chosen to maximize $|R \cap Λ(T)|$. Large robust connectivity was originally used to show flexible choosability in non-regular graphs. In this paper, we investigate some interesting properties of robust connectivity for graphs embedded in surfaces. We prove a tight asymptotic bound of $Ω(γ^{-\frac{1}{r}})$ for the robust connectivity of $r$-connected graphs of Euler genus $γ$. Moreover, we give a surprising connection between the robust connectivity of graphs with an edge-maximal embedding in a surface and the surface connectivity of that surface, which describes to what extent large induced subgraphs of embedded graphs can be cut out from the surface without splitting the surface into multiple parts. For planar graphs, this connection provides an equivalent formulation of a long-standing conjecture of Albertson and Berman [A conjecture on planar graphs, 1979], which states that every planar graph on $n$ vertices contains an induced forest of size at least $n/2$.

$Γ$-graphic delta-matroids and their applications
Published in Combinatorica, 43(5):963-983, October 2023 • View PublicationBIB
For an abelian group $Γ$, a $Γ$-labelled graph is a graph whose vertices are labelled by elements of $Γ$. We prove that a certain collection of edge sets of a $Γ$-labelled graph forms a delta-matroid, which we call a $Γ$-graphic delta-matroid, and provide a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the separation problem, which allows us to apply the symmetric greedy algorithm of Bouchet to find a maximum weight feasible set in such a delta-matroid. We present two algorithmic applications on graphs; Maximum Weight Packing of Trees of Order Not Divisible by $k$ and Maximum Weight $S$-Tree Packing. We also discuss various properties of $Γ$-graphic delta-matroids.

Removal lemmas and approximate homomorphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study quantitative relationships between the triangle removal lemma and several of its variants. One such variant, which we call the triangle-free lemma, states that for each $ε>0$ there exists $M$ such that every triangle-free graph $G$ has an $ε$-approximate homomorphism to a triangle-free graph $F$ on at most $M$ vertices (here an $ε$-approximate homomorphism is a map $V(G) \to V(F)$ where all but at most $ε|V(G)|^2$ edges of $G$ are mapped to edges of $F$). One consequence of our results is that the least possible $M$ in the triangle-free lemma grows faster than exponential in any polynomial in $ε^{-1}$. We also prove more general results for arbitrary graphs, as well as arithmetic analogues over finite fields, where the bounds are close to optimal.

The crossing number of the generalized Petersen graph $P(3k,k)$ in the projective plane
The crossing number of a graph $G$ in a surface $Σ$, denoted by $cr_Σ(G)$, is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$ in $Σ$. Let $k$ be an integer satisfying $k\geq 3$, the generalized Petersen graph $P(3k,k)$ is the graph with vertex set $V(P(3k,k))=\{u_i, v_i| i=1,2,\cdots,3k\}$ and edge set $E(P(3k,k))=\{u_iu_{i+1}, u_iv_i, v_iv_{k+i}| i=1,2,\cdots,3k\},$ the subscripts are read modulo $3k.$ This paper investigates the crossing number of $P(3k,k)$ in the projective plane. We determine the exact value of $cr_{N_1}(P(3k,k))$ is $k-2$ when $3\le k\le 7,$ moreover, for $k\ge 8,$ we get that $k-2\le cr_{N_1}(P(3k,k))\le k-1.$

The generalized 3-connectivity of the folded hypercube $FQ_n$
The generalized $k$-connectivity of a graph $G$, denoted by $κ_k(G)$, is a generalization of the traditional connectivity. It is well known that the generalized $k$-connectivity is an important indicator for measuring the fault tolerance and reliability of interconnection networks. The $n$-dimensional folded hypercube $FQ_n$ is obtained from the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ by adding an edge between any pair of vertices with complementary addresses. In this paper, we show that $κ_3(FQ_n)=n$ for $n\ge 2$, that is, for any three vertices in $FQ_n$, there exist $n$ internally disjoint trees connecting them.
On the period collapse of a family of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials
A graph whose nodes have degree 1 or 3 is called a $\{1,3\}$-graph. Liu and Osserman associated a polytope to each $\{1,3\}$-graph and studied the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of these polytopes. They showed that the vertices of these polytopes have coordinates in the set $\{0,\frac14,\frac12,1\}$, which implies that the period of their Ehrhart quasi-polynomials is either 1, 2, or 4. We show that the period of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of these polytopes is at most 2 if the graph is a tree or a cubic graph, and it is equal to 4 otherwise. In the process of proving this theorem, several interesting combinatorial and geometric properties of these polytopes were uncovered, arising from the structure of their associated graphs. The tools developed here may find other applications in the study of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials and enumeration problems for other polytopes that arise from graphs. Additionally, we have identified some interesting connections with triangulations of 3-manifolds.

The chromatic number of signed graphs with bounded maximum average degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A signed graph is a simple graph with two types of edges: positive and negative edges. Switching a vertex $v$ of a signed graph corresponds to changing the type of each edge incident to $v$. A homomorphism from a signed graph $G$ to another signed graph $H$ is a mapping $\varphi: V(G) \rightarrow V(H)$ such that, after switching some of the vertices of $G$, $\varphi$ maps every edge of $G$ to an edge of $H$ of the same type. The chromatic number $χ_s(G)$ of a signed graph $G$ is the order of a smallest signed graph $H$ such that there is a homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. The maximum average degree $mad(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum of the average degrees of all the subgraphs of $G$. We denote $\mathcal{M}_k$ the class of signed graphs with maximum average degree less than $k$ and $\mathcal{P}_g$ the class of planar signed graphs of girth at least $g$. We prove: $χ_s(\mathcal{P}_{7}) \le 5$, $χ_s(\mathcal{M}_{\frac{17}{5}}) \le 10$ which implies $χ_s(\mathcal{P}_{5}) \le 10$, $χ_s(\mathcal{M}_{4-\frac{8}{q+3}}) \le q+1$ with $q$ a prime power congruent to 1 modulo 4.

A Graph Decomposition motivated by the Geometry of Randomized Rounding
We introduce a graph decomposition which exists for all simple, connected graphs $G=(V,E)$. The decomposition $V = A \cup B \cup C$ is such that each vertex in $A$ has more neighbors in $B$ than in $A$ and vice versa. $C$ is `balanced': each $v \in C$ has the same number of neighbours in $A$ and $B$. These decompositions arise naturally from the behavior of an associated dynamical system (`Randomized Rounding') on $(\mathbb{S}^1)^{|V|}$. Connections to judicious partitions and the \textsc{MaxCut} problem (in particular the Burer-Monteiro-Zhang heuristic) are being discussed.

On the fixed-parameter tractability of the partial vertex cover problem with a matching constraint in edge-weighted bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the classical partial vertex cover problem, we are given a graph $G$ and two positive integers $R$ and $L$. The goal is to check whether there is a subset $V'$ of $V$ of size at most $R$, such that $V'$ covers at least $L$ edges of $G$. The problem is NP-hard as it includes the Vertex Cover problem. Previous research has addressed the extension of this problem where one has weight-functions defined on sets of vertices and edges of $G$. In this paper, we consider the following version of the problem where on the input we are given an edge-weighted bipartite graph $G$, and three positive integers $R$, $S$ and $T$. The goal is to check whether $G$ has a subset $V'$ of vertices of $G$ of size at most $R$, such that the edges of $G$ covered by $V'$ have weight at least $S$ and they include a matching of weight at least $T$. In the paper, we address this problem from the perspective of fixed-parameter tractability. One of our hardness results is obtained via a reduction from the bi-objective knapsack problem, which we show to be W[1]-hard with respect to one of parameters. We believe that this problem might be useful in obtaining similar results in other situations.

Walk/Zeta Correspondence

Our previous work presented explicit formulas for the generalized zeta function and the generalized Ihara zeta function corresponding to the Grover walk and the positive-support version of the Grover walk on the regular graph via the Konno-Sato theorem, respectively. This paper extends these walks to a class of walks including random walks, correlated random walks, quantum walks, and open quantum random walks on the torus by the Fourier analysis.
Acyclic, Star, and Injective Colouring: Bounding the Diameter
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine the effect of bounding the diameter for well-studied variants of the Colouring problem. A colouring is acyclic, star, or injective if any two colour classes induce a forest, star forest or disjoint union of vertices and edges, respectively. The corresponding decision problems are Acyclic Colouring, Star Colouring and Injective Colouring. The last problem is also known as $L(1,1)$-Labelling and we also consider the framework of $L(a,b)$-Labelling. We prove a number of (almost-)complete complexity classifications. In particular, we show that for graphs of diameter at most $d$, Acyclic $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable if $d\leq 2$ but NP-complete if $d\geq 4$, and Star $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable if $d\leq 3$ but NP-complete for $d\geq 8$. As far as we are aware, Star $3$-Colouring is the first problem that exhibits a complexity jump for some $d\geq 3$. Our third main result is that $L(1,2)$-Labelling is NP-complete for graphs of diameter $2$; we relate the latter problem to a special case of Hamiltonian Path.

On the rank of Z_2-matrices with free entries on the diagonal
For an $n \times n$ matrix $M$ with entries in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ denote by $R(M)$ the minimal rank of all the matrices obtained by changing some numbers on the main diagonal of $M$. We prove that for each non-negative integer $k$ there is a polynomial in $n$ algorithm deciding whether $R(M) \leq k$ (whose complexity may depend on $k$). We also give a polynomial in $n$ algorithm computing a number $m$ such that $m/2 \leq R(M) \leq m$. These results have applications to graph drawings on non-orientable surfaces.
