On the Laplacian spectral gap of generalized pancake graphs
The generalized pancake graph $P(m,n)$ is the Cayley graph of the group of colored permutations $\mathbb{Z}_m\wr S_n=(\mathbb{Z}_m)^n\rtimes S_n$ generated by generalized prefix reversals. In this paper, we establish that, for all $m,n\geq2$, the spectral gap $γ(P(m,n))$ of the normalized Laplacian satisfies $α_m/n\leqγ(P(m,n))\leq1/n$, where $α_m$ is a positive constant that depends only on $m$. As a consequence, for every fixed $m\geq2$, $γ(P(m,n))$ is $Θ_m(1/n)$ as $n\to\infty$. The proof combines Cesi's semi-recursive spectral-gap inequality with a Fourier decomposition of the appropriate operators associated with a coset Schreier graph of color-position pairs. For fixed $n\geq2$, we also establish that $γ(P(m,n))$ is $Θ_n(m^{-2})$ as $m\to\infty$. This disproves a conjecture of Blanco and Buehrle asserting that, for fixed $n$, the corresponding undirected generalized pancake graphs form an expander family.
The Left-Regular Stabilizer of Zaks' Hamiltonian Cycle in the Pancake Graph
Let $P_n=\mathrm{Cay}(S_n,\{r_2,\ldots,r_n\})$ be the pancake graph, with prefix reversals acting on the right. Conjugating Zaks' suffix-reversal permutation Gray code by the full reversal gives a distinguished Hamiltonian cycle $Z_n$ in $P_n$. We determine the stabilizer of this particular cycle under the left regular action of $S_n$. If $ρ=r_{n-1}r_n=[n,1,2,\ldots,n-1]$, then, for every $n\ge3$, $\mathrm{Stab}_{L(S_n)}(Z_n)=\langle L_ρ,L_{r_n}\rangle\cong D_n$, where $D_n$ denotes the dihedral group of order $2n$. The inclusion $\supseteq$ follows from the recursive block decomposition $W_n=(W_{n-1}r_n)^{n-1}W_{n-1}$ and from the palindromy $W_n^R=W_n$. The reverse inclusion follows from a general cyclic-order rigidity lemma: if a Hamiltonian cycle on a finite group is invariant under $L_a$, with $\mathrm{ord}(a)\ge3$, then every left translation preserving the same cycle conjugates $a$ to $a$ or $a^{-1}$. For $n\ge5$, Deng-Zhang's automorphism theorem gives the same stabilizer inside $\mathrm{Aut}(P_n)$; the exceptional ranks are handled separately. We also compute the compression factor of $Z_n$: it is $n$ for $n\ge4$ and $6$ for $n=3$.
List and total colorings of multiset permutation graphs
Let $k$ and $\ell$ be positive integers. The multiset star transposition graph ST$_k^\ell$ has as vertices the $k\ell$-strings $v_0\cdots v_{k\ell-1}$ on $k$ symbols, each symbol repeated $\ell$ times, and edges given by the transpositions $(v_0\;v_i)$ with $v_i\ne v_0$ ($0<i<k\ell$). It is shown for $k>1$ and $\ell>2$ that ST$_k^\ell$ is $(\ell-1)$-choosable and that, as a result, admits total colorings. In order to prove such assertions, the notion of efficient domination set (or E-set) of a graph is generalized for $\ell>1$ to that of an efficient dominating$\,^\ell$-set and applied to the graphs ST$_k^\ell$\,, showing they admit vertex partitions that generalize the Dejter-Serra partitions of ST$_k^1$ into E-sets, but not efficiently in the sense that the distance of each E$^\ell$-set be 3. Efficiently in such sense however, $ST^2_k$ and the related 2-set pancake permutation graph PC$^2_k$, among other intermediate permutation graphs, are shown to admit total colorings with $2k-1$ colors that determine partitions into $2k-1$ E-sets, each with distance 3.
Furthermore, associated E-chains are examined.
Exact number of flips required to sort a burnt stack of pancakes
For the buffet, the waiter of a restaurant gets a large stack of pancakes from the overworked cook. As usual, one side is burnt, and as the level of batter decreases, the pancakes became smaller and smaller. Hence, the waiter ends up with a stack of one-sided burnt pancakes sorted by size, with the larger at the bottom and burnt side up. However, the waiter cannot serve them this way. He needs to turn all the burnt sides down, without changing the order. Having only a spatula, he can only perform flips to the top of the stack. How can he perform this transformation in a minimum number of flips? Having n pancakes, this problem can be modeled in the burnt pancake graph, having 2^n*n! vertices, where each possible stack of pancakes corresponds to a vertex expressed by a permutation of size n, where the pancakes are ordered by size, and the pancake numbers are multiplied by -1, if the corresponding pancake has the burnt side side up. An edge exists in this graph, if the corresponding stacks can be reached from each other by one flip. Let T(n) be the minimum number of flips to sort the stack of n pancakes (-1,...,-n). General burnt pancake sorting has been introduced by Bill Gates and Papadimitriou. The instance (-1,...,-n) has strong relevance because of its easy structure and as it has been shown to be a worst-case instance for several small n. Heydari and Sudborough gave the currently best upper bound of T(n), namely (3n+3)/2 for n = 3 mod 4, which later has been shown to be exact by a work of Cibulka. Except these two works, no progress regarding lower and upper bounds has been made until now. In our work, we present that (3n+3)/2 is also an upper bound of T(n) for n = 1 mod 4, which again matches the lower bound of Cibulka and thus is exact. The case of even n keeps an open problem, where two possible values for T(n) are possible, namely (3/2)n + 1 or (3/2)n + 2.
Algorithms for orthogonal partitioning into four parts
The famous pancake theorem states that for every finite set $X$ in the plane, there exist two orthogonal lines that divide $X$ into four equal parts. We propose an algorithm whose running time is linear in the number of points in $X$ and prove that this complexity is optimal. We also consider generalizations of the pancake theorem and show that orthogonal hyperplanes can be found in polynomial time.
Generating the symmetric group by three prefix reversals
The cubic pancake graphs are Cayley graphs over the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}_n$ generated by three prefix reversals. There is the following open problem: characterize all the sets of three prefix reversals that generate $\mathrm{Sym}_n$. We present a partial answer to this problem, in particular, we characterize all generating sets of three elements that contain at least one of the prefix reversals $r_2, r_3, r_{n-2}$, and $r_{n-1}$. We also give some computational results relating to the diameter and the girth of some cubic pancake graphs.
Cutting a Pancake with an Exotic Knife
In the first chapter of their classic book "Concrete Mathematics", Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik consider the maximum number of pieces that can be obtained from a pancake by making n cuts with a knife blade that is straight, or bent into a V, or bent twice into a Z. We extend their work by considering knives, or "cookie-cutters", of even more exotic shapes, including a k-armed V, a chain of k connected line segments, a long-legged version of one of the letters A, E, H, L, M, T, W, or X, a convex polygon, a circle, a phi, a figure 8, a pentagram, a hexagram, or a lollipop. In many cases a counting argument combined with Euler's formula produces an explicit expression for the maximum number of pieces. "Constrained" versions of the long-legged letters A and T are also considered, for which we have only conjectural formulas.
A note on some spectral properties of generalised pancake graphs
We prove that the spectral gap of generalised pancake graphs is strictly less than 2 and strictly less than 1 for burnt pancake graphs. In addition, we establish lower bounds on the multiplicities of certain integer eigenvalues of generalised pancake graphs. Together, these results settle two recent conjectures of Blanco and Buehrle.
On the spectra of prefix-reversal graphs
In this paper, we study spectral properties of prefix-reversal graphs. These graphs are obtained by connecting two elements of $C_m\wr S_n$ via prefix reversals. If $m=1,2$, the corresponding prefix-reversal graphs are the classic pancake and burnt pancake graphs. If $m>2$, then one can consider the directed and undirected versions of these graphs. We prove that the spectrum of the undirected prefix-reversal graph $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ contains all even integers in the interval $[0,2n]\setminus\{2\lfloor n/2\rfloor\}$ and if $m\equiv0\pmod4$, we then show that the spectrum contains all even integers in $[0,2n]$. In the directed case, we show that the spectrum of the directed prefix-reversal graph $P(m,n)$ contains all integers in the interval $[0,n]\setminus\{\lfloor n/2\rfloor\}$. As a consequence, we show that in either case, the prefix-reversal graphs have a small spectral gap.
Hamiltonian Properties of Hybrid-Faulty Burnt Pancake Graphs
We investigate the combined occurrence of edge faults and vertex faults in the burnt pancake graph (\( BP_n \)). In this paper, we prove that \( BP_n - F \), where \( F \) includes pairs of end-vertices of matching edges and fault-tolerant edges, contains a Hamiltonian cycle when \( |F| \leq n-2 \) and a Hamiltonian path when \( |F| \leq n-3 \). This establishes that \( BP_n \) is \((n-2)\)-hybrid fault Hamiltonian and \((n-3)\)-hybrid fault Hamiltonian connected for \( n \geq 3 \). These results are demonstrated to be optimal under the given conditions, with all bounds shown to be tight.
Some integer values in the spectra of burnt pancake graphs
The burnt pancake graph, denoted by $\mathbb{BP}_n$, is formed by connecting signed permutations via prefix reversals. Here, we discuss some spectral properties of $\mathbb{BP}_n$. More precisely, we prove that the adjacency spectrum of $\mathbb{BP}_n$ contains all integer values in the set $\{0, 1, \ldots, n\}\setminus\{\left\lfloor n/2 \right\rfloor\}$.
Paired 2-disjoint path covers of burnt pancake graphs with faulty elements
The burnt pancake graph $BP_n$ is the Cayley graph of the hyperoctahedral group using prefix reversals as generators. Let $\{u,v\}$ and $\{x,y\}$ be any two pairs of distinct vertices of $BP_n$ for $n\geq 4$. We show that there are $u-v$ and $x-y$ paths whose vertices partition the vertex set of $BP_n$ even if $BP_n$ has up to $n-4$ faulty elements. On the other hand, for every $n\ge3$ there is a set of $n-2$ faulty edges or faulty vertices for which such a fault-free disjoint path cover does not exist.
The generalized 4-connectivity of burnt pancake graphs
The generalized $k$-connectivity of a graph $G$, denoted by $κ_k(G)$, is the minimum number of internally edge disjoint $S$-trees for any $S\subseteq V(G)$ and $|S|=k$. The generalized $k$-connectivity is a natural extension of the classical connectivity and plays a key role in applications related to the modern interconnection networks. An $n$-dimensional burnt pancake graph $BP_n$ is a Cayley graph which posses many desirable properties. In this paper, we try to evaluate the reliability of $BP_n$ by investigating its generalized 4-connectivity. By introducing the notation of inclusive tree and by studying structural properties of $BP_n$, we show that $κ_4(BP_n)=n-1$ for $n\ge 2$, that is, for any four vertices in $BP_n$, there exist ($n-1$) internally edge disjoint trees connecting them in $BP_n$.
Bounds on the genus for 2-cell embeddings of prefix-reversal graphs
In this paper, we provide bounds for the genus of the pancake graph $\mathbb{P}_n$, burnt pancake graph $\mathbb{BP}_n$, and undirected generalized pancake graph $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$. Our upper bound for $\mathbb{P}_n$ is sharper than the previously-known bound, and the other bounds presented are the first of their kind. Our proofs are constructive and rely on finding an appropriate rotation system (also referred to in the literature as Edmonds' permutation technique) where certain cycles in the graphs we consider become boundaries of regions of a 2-cell embedding. A key ingredient in the proof of our bounds for the genus $\mathbb{P}_n$ and $\mathbb{BP}_n$ is a labeling algorithm of their vertices that allows us to implement rotation systems to bound the number of regions of a 2-cell embedding of said graphs. All of our bounds are asymptotically tight; in particular, the genus of $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ is $Θ(m^nnn!)$ for all $m\geq1$ and $n\geq2$.
A new upper bound to (a variant of) the pancake problem
The "pancake problem" asks how many prefix reversals are sufficient to sort any permutation $π\in \mathcal{S}_k$ to the identity. We write $f(k)$ to denote this quantity.
The best known bounds are that $\frac{15}{14}k -O(1) \le f(k)\le \frac{18}{11}k+O(1)$. The proof of the upper bound is computer-assisted, and considers thousands of cases.
We consider $h(k)$, how many prefix and suffix reversals are sufficient to sort any $π\in \mathcal{S}_k$. We observe that $\frac{15}{14}k -O(1)\le h(k)$ still holds, and give a human proof that $h(k) \le \frac{3}{2}k +O(1)$. The constant "$\frac{3}{2}$" is a natural barrier for the pancake problem and this variant, hence new techniques will be required to do better.

The burnt pancake graph $BP_n$ and the godan graph $EA_n$ are two kinds of Cayley graphs which posses many desirable properties. In this paper, we investigate the generalized 3-connectivity of $BP_n$ and $EA_n$. We show that $κ_3(BP_n)=n-1$ and $κ_3(EA_n)=n-1$.

In this paper, we consider the lengths of cycles that can be embedded on the edges of the generalized pancake graphs which are the Cayley graph of the generalized symmetric group $S(m,n)$, generated by prefix reversals. The generalized symmetric group $S(m,n)$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order $m$ and the symmetric group of order $n!$. Our main focus is the underlying \emph{undirected} graphs, denoted by $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$. In the cases when the cyclic group has one or two elements, these graphs are isomorphic to the pancake graphs and burnt pancake graphs, respectively. We prove that when the cyclic group has three elements, $\mathbb{P}_3(n)$ has cycles of all possible lengths, thus resembling a similar property of pancake graphs and burnt pancake graphs. Moreover, $\mathbb{P}_4(n)$ has all the even-length cycles. We utilize these results as base cases and show that if $m>2$ is even, $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ has all cycles of even length starting from its girth to a Hamiltonian cycle. Moreover, when $m>2$ is odd, $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ has cycles of all lengths starting from its girth to a Hamiltonian cycle. We furthermore show that the girth of $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ is $\min\{m,6\}$ if $m\geq3$, thus complementing the known results for $m=1,2.$
On The Diameter of Pancake Graphs
The Pancake graph($P_n$) represents the group of all permutations on n elements, namely $S_n$, with respect to the generating set containing all prefix reversals. The diameter of a graph is the maximum of all distances on the graph, where the distance between two vertices is the shortest path between them. In the case of the $P_n$, it is the maximum of the shortest generating sequence of each permutation in $S_n$. Here we propose a method to realise better upper bounds to the diameter of $P_n$ that has its focus on Graph Theoretical concepts rather than Algebra.

The Pancake graphs $P_n, n\geqslant 2$, are Cayley graphs over the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}_n$ generated by prefix-reversals. There are six generating sets of prefix-reversals of cardinality three which give connected Cayley graphs over the symmetric group known as cubic Pancake graphs. In this paper we study the girth of the cubic Pancake graphs. It is proved that considered cubic Pancake graphs have the girths at most twelve.

In this paper an improved bound on the chromatic number of the Pancake graph $P_n, n\geqslant 2$, is presented. The bound is obtained using a subadditivity property of the chromatic number of the Pancake graph. We also investigate an equitable coloring of $P_n$. An equitable $(n-1)$-coloring based on efficient dominating sets is given and optimal equitable $4$-colorings are considered for small $n$. It is conjectured that the chromatic number of $P_n$ coincides with its equitable chromatic number for any $n\geqslant 2$.
