Globally Simple Heffter Arrays $H(n;k)$ with $k \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$
Heffter arrays are combinatorial structures used to construct orthogonal cyclic cycle decompositions and biembeddings of complete graphs onto surfaces. A Heffter array $H(m,n;h,k)$ is an $m \times n$ partially filled array with distinct nonzero entries from $\mathbb{Z}_{2nk+1}$ such that each row contains $h$ filled cells, each column contains $k$ filled cells, the elements in the filled cells form a half-set of $\mathbb{Z}_{2nk+1}$, and every row and column sums to zero modulo $2nk+1$. If these row and column sums equal zero over the integers, the structure is called an integer Heffter array. Furthermore, such an array is called globally simple if the partial sums of the entries in each row and column, evaluated in their natural order, are distinct modulo $2nk+1$. When $m=n$ and $h=k$, the array is square and denoted by $H(n;k)$. While the existence of globally simple square Heffter arrays has been established for several congruence classes, the cases where $k \equiv 1,2 \pmod{4}$ for $k > 10$ have remained an open problem [1]. In this work, we address this gap in the literature by explicitly constructing globally simple integer Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ for the previously open cases where $k \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$ and $n \equiv 0,3 \pmod{4}$. Consequently, these constructions guarantee the existence of orthogonal cyclic $k$-cycle decompositions of the complete graph $K_{2nk+1}$ for these parameters. [1] J.H. Dinitz and A. Pasotti. An update on the existence of integer Heffter arrays
An integer Heffter array $H(m,n;s;k)$ is an $m\times n$ partially filled array whose entries are the elements of a subset $Ω\subset \mathbb{Z}$ such that $\{Ω,-Ω\}$ is a partition of the set $\{1,2,\ldots,2nk\}$ and such that the following conditions are satisfied: each row contains $s$ filled cells, each column contains $k$ filled cells, the elements in every row and column add up to $0$. It was conjectured by Dan Archdeacon that an integer $\H(m,n;s;k)$ exists if and only if $ms=nk$, $3\leq s \leq n$, $3\leq k\leq m$ and $nk\equiv 0,3\pmod 4$. In this paper, we provide new constructions of these objects that allow us to prove the validity of Archdeacon's conjecture in each admissible case, except when $k=3,5$ and $s\not \equiv 0\pmod 4$ is such that $\gcd(s,k)=1$.

Further constructions of square integer relative Heffter arrays
A square integer relative Heffter array is an $n \times n$ array whose rows and columns sum to zero, each row and each column has exactly $k$ entries and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for every $x \in \mathbb{Z}_{2nk+t}\setminus J$, where $J$ is a subgroup of size $t$. There are many open problems regarding the existence of these arrays. In this paper we construct two new infinite families of these arrays with the additional property that they are strippable. These constructions complete the existence theory for square integer relative Heffter arrays in the case where $k=3$ and $n$ is prime.

On relative simple Heffter spaces
In this paper, we introduce the concept of a relative Heffter space which simultaneously generalizes those of relative Heffter arrays and Heffter spaces. Given a subgroup $J$ of an abelian group $G$, a relative Heffter space is a resolvable configuration whose points form a half-set of $G\setminus{J}$ and whose blocks are all zero-sum in $G$. Here we present two infinite families of relative Heffter spaces satisfying the additional condition of being simple. As a consequence, we get new results on globally simple relative Heffter arrays, on mutually orthogonal cycle decompositions and on biembeddings of cyclic cycle decompositions of the complete multipartite graph into an orientable surface.

Shiftable Heffter spaces
The shiftable Heffter arrays are naturally generalized to the shiftable Heffter spaces. We present a recursive construction which starting from a single shiftable Heffter space leads to infinitely many other shiftable Heffter spaces of the same degree. We also present a direct construction making use of pandiagonal magic squares leading to a shiftable $(16\ell^2,4l;3)$ Heffter space for any $\ell \geq 1$. Combining these constructions we obtain a shiftable $(16\ell^2mn, 4\ell n; 3)$ Heffter space for every triple of positive integers $(\ell,m,n)$ with $m \geq n$.

Heffter arrays over partial loops
A Heffter array over an additive group $G$ is any partially filled array $A$ satisfying that: (1) each one of its rows and columns sum to zero in $G$, and (2) if $i\in G\setminus\{0\}$, then either $i$ or $-i$ appears exactly once in $A$. In this paper, this notion is naturally generalized to that of $\mathcal{B}$-Heffter array over a partial loop, where $\mathcal{B}$ is a set of block-sum polynomials over an affine $1$-design on the set of entries in $A$.

Towards a solution of Archdeacon's conjecture on integer Heffter arrays
In this paper, we make significant progress on a conjecture proposed by Dan Archdeacon on the existence of integer Heffter arrays $H(m,n;s,k)$ whenever the necessary conditions hold, that is, $3\leqslant s \leqslant n$, $3\leqslant k\leqslant m$, $ms=nk$ and $nk\equiv 0,3 \pmod 4$. By constructing integer Heffter array sets, we prove the conjecture in the affirmative whenever $k\geqslant 7\cdot \gcd(s,k)$ is odd and $s\neq 3,5,6,10$.

Heffter Spaces
The notion of a Heffter array, which received much attention in the last decade, is equivalent to a pair of orthogonal Heffter systems. In this paper we study the existence problem of a set of $r$ mutually orthogonal Heffter systems for any $r$. Such a set is equivalent to a resolvable partial linear space of degree $r$ whose parallel classes are Heffter systems: this is a new combinatorial design that we call a Heffter space. We present a series of direct constructions of Heffter spaces with block size odd and arbitrarily large degree $r$ obtained with the crucial use of finite fields. Among the applications we establish, in particular, the existence of $r$ mutually orthogonal $k$-cycle systems of order a prime power $q=2kw+1$ whenever $kw$ is odd and $w>4k^4\lceil{r\over k}\rceil$.

On the Crazy Knight's Tour Problem
Heffter arrays are partially filled arrays that have been introduced in [1] as a tool to construct regular embeddings of graphs on surfaces. These constructions can be achieved from the solution of a tour problem on the filled cells of the array, introduced in [3] and called Crazy Knight's Tour Problem. In particular, the knight's move is seen as the composition of an horizontal move and a vertical one, where the directions (leftward or rightward, upward or downward respectively) are prescribed in advance for each row and each column of the array and each filled cell is mapped to the first filled cell encountered along that direction. Then, a solution to the Crazy Knight's Tour Problem is a set of directions such that the resulting move function is a tour over the array. Here, we consider a particular class of square arrays, and we construct solutions to the tour problem in some infinite families of these arrays.

Constructing generalized Heffter arrays via near alternating sign matrices
Let $S$ be a subset of a group $G$ (not necessarily abelian) such that $S\,\cap -S$ is empty or contains only elements of order $2$, and let $\mathbf{h}=(h_1,\ldots, h_m)\in \mathbb{N}^m$ and $\mathbf{k}=(k_1, \ldots, k_n)\in \mathbb{N}^n$. A generalized Heffter array GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over $G$ is an $m\times n$ matrix $A=(a_{ij})$ such that: the $i$-th row (resp. $j$-th column) of $A$ contains exactly $h_i$ (resp. $k_j$) nonzero elements, and the list $\{a_{ij}, -a_{ij}\mid a_{ij}\neq 0\}$ equals $λ$ times the set $S\,\cup\, -S$. We speak of a zero sum (resp. nonzero sum) GHA if each row and each column of $A$ sums to zero (resp. a nonzero element), with respect to some ordering. In this paper, we use near alternating sign matrices to build both zero and nonzero sum GHAs, over cyclic groups, having the further strong property of being simple. In particular, we construct zero sum and simple GHAs whose row and column weights are congruent to $0$ modulo $4$. This result also provides the first infinite family of simple (classic) Heffter arrays to be rectangular ($m\neq n$) and with less than $n$ nonzero entries in each row. Furthermore, we build nonzero sum GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over an arbitrary group $G$ whenever $S$ contains enough noninvolutions, thus extending previous nonconstructive results where $\pm S = G\setminus H$ for some subgroup $H$~of~$G$. Finally, we describe how GHAs can be used to build orthogonal decompositions and biembeddings of Cayley graphs (over groups not necessarily abelian) onto orientable surfaces.

Weak Heffter Arrays and biembedding graphs on non-orientable surfaces
In 2015, Archdeacon proposed the notion of Heffter arrays in view of its connection to several other combinatorial objects. In the same paper he also presented the following variant. A weak Heffter array $\mathrm{W}\mathrm{H}(m,n;h,k)$ is an $m \times n$ matrix $A$ such that: each row contains $h$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; for every $x \in \mathbb{Z}_{2nk+1} \setminus \{0\}$, there is exactly one cell of $A$ whose element is one of the following: $x,-x,\pm x,\mp x$, where the upper sign on $\pm$ or $\mp$ is the row sign and the lower sign is the column sign; the elements in every row and column (with the corresponding sign) sum to $0$ in $\mathbb{Z}_{2nk+1}$. Also the ``weak concept'', as the classical one, is related to several other topics, such as difference families, cycle systems and biembeddings. Many papers on Heffter arrays have been published, while no one on weak Heffter arrays has been written. This is the first one and here we explore necessary conditions, existence and non-existence results, and connections to biembeddings into non-orientable surfaces.

A class of highly symmetric Archdeacon embeddings
Archdeacon, in his seminal paper $[1]$, defined the concept of Heffter array to provide explicit constructions of biembeddings of the complete graph $K_v$ into orientable surfaces, the so-called Archdeacon embeddings, and proved that these embeddings are $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$-regular. In this paper, we show that an Archdeacon embedding may admit an automorphism group that is strictly larger than $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$. Indeed, as an application of the interesting class of arrays recently introduced by Buratti in $[2]$, we exhibit, for infinitely many values of $v$, an embedding of this type having full automorphism group of size ${v \choose 2}$ that is the largest possible one.

Tight Heffter arrays from finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
After extending the classic notion of a tight Heffter array H$(m,n)$ to any group of order $2mn+1$, we give direct constructions for elementary abelian tight Heffter arrays, hence in particular for prime tight Heffter arrays. If $q=2mn+1$ is a prime power, we say that an elementary abelian H$(m,n)$ is ``over $\mathbb{F}_q$" since, for its construction, we exploit both the additive and multiplicative structure of the field of order $q$. We show that in many cases a direct construction of an H$(m,n)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, say $A$, can be obtained very easily by imposing that $A$ has rank 1 and, possibly, a rich group of {\it multipliers}, that are elements $u$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that $u A=A$ up to a permutation of rows and columns. An H$(m,n)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ will be said {\it optimal} if the order of its group of multipliers is the least common multiple of the odd parts of $m$ and $n$, since this is the maximum possible order for it. The main result is an explicit construction of a rank-one H$(m,n)$ -- reaching almost always the optimality -- for all admissible pairs $(m,n)$ for which there exist two distinct odd primes $p$, $p'$ dividing $m$ and $n$, respectively.

A survey of Heffter arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
Heffter arrays were introduced by Archdeacon in 2015 as an interesting link between combinatorial designs and topological graph theory. Since the initial paper on this topic, there has been a good deal of interest in Heffter arrays as well as in related topics such as the sequencing of subsets of a group, biembeddings of cycle systems on a surface, and orthogonal cycle systems. This survey presents an overview of the current state of the art of this topic. We begin with an introduction to Heffter arrays for the reader who is unfamiliar with the subject, then we give a unified and comprehensive presentation of the major results, showing some proof methods also. This survey also includes sections on the connections of Heffter arrays to several other combinatorial objects, such as problems on partial sums and sequenceability, biembedding graphs on surfaces, difference families and orthogonal graph decompositions. These sections are followed by a section discussing the variants and generalizations of Heffter arrays which have been proposed. The survey itself is complemented by a list of unsolved problems as well as an updated and complete bibliography.

Magic partially filled arrays on abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a special class of partially filled arrays. A magic partially filled array $\mathrm{MPF}_Ω(m,n; s,k)$ on a subset $Ω$ of an abelian group $(Γ,+)$ is a partially filled array of size $m\times n$ with entries in $Ω$ such that $(i)$ every $ω\in Ω$ appears once in the array; $(ii)$ each row contains $s$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; $(iii)$ there exist (not necessarily distinct) elements $x,y\in Γ$ such that the sum of the elements in each row is $x$ and the sum of the elements in each column is $y$. In particular, if $x=y=0_Γ$, we have a zero-sum magic partially filled array ${}^0\mathrm{MPF}_Ω(m,n; s,k)$. Examples of these objects are magic rectangles, $Γ$-magic rectangles, signed magic arrays, (integer or non integer) Heffter arrays. Here, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a magic rectangle with empty cells, i.e., of an $\mathrm{MPF}_Ω(m,n;s,k)$ where $Ω=\{1,2,\ldots,nk\}\subset\mathbb{Z}$. We also construct zero-sum magic partially filled arrays when $Ω$ is the abelian group $Γ$ or the set of its nonzero elements.

Existence of $λ$-Fold Non-zero sum Heffter arrays through local considerations
In [12] was introduced, for cyclic groups, the class of partially filled arrays of the non-zero sum Heffter array that are, as the Heffter arrays, related to difference families, graph decompositions, and biembeddings. Here we generalize this definition to any finite groups. Given a subgroup $J$ of order $t$ of a group $G$, a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$, $^λ\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(m,n; h,k)$, is an $m \times n$ p. f. array with entries in $G$ such that: each row contains $h$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; for every $x\in G\setminus J$, the sum of the occurrence of $x$ and $-x$ is $λ$; the sum of the elements in every row and column is, following the natural orderings from left to right for the rows and from top to bottom for the columns, different from $0$ (in $G$). In [12], there was presented a complete, probabilistic, solution for the existence problem in case $λ=1$ and $G=\mathbb{Z}_v$ that is the starting point of this investigation. In this paper, we will consider the existence problem for a generic value of $λ$ and a generic finite group $G$, and we present an almost complete solution to this problem. In particular, we will prove, through local considerations (inspired by Lovász Local Lemma), that there exists a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$ whenever the trivial necessary conditions are satisfied and $|G|=v\geq 41$. This value can be turned down to $29$ in case the array does not contain empty cells. Finally, we will show that these arrays give rise to biembeddings of multigraphs into orientable surfaces and we provide new infinite families of such embeddings.

Tight globally simple non-zero sum Heffter arrays and biembeddings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Square relative non-zero sum Heffter arrays, denoted by $\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(n;k)$, have been introduced as a variant of the classical concept of Heffter array. An $\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(n; k)$ is an $n\times n$ partially filled array with elements in $\mathbb{Z}_v$, where $v=2nk+t$, whose rows and whose columns contain $k$ filled cells, such that the sum of the elements in every row and column is different from $0$ (modulo $v$) and, for every $x\in \mathbb{Z}_v$ not belonging to the subgroup of order $t$, either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array. In this paper we give direct constructions of square non-zero sum Heffter arrays with no empty cells, $\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(n;n)$, for every $n$ odd, when $t$ is a divisor of $n$ and when $t\in\{2,2n,n^2,2n^2\}$. The constructed arrays have also the very restrictive property of being "globally simple"; this allows us to get new orthogonal path decompositions and new biembeddings of complete multipartite graphs.

Biembeddings of Archdeacon type: their full automorphism group and their number
Archdeacon, in his seminal paper $[1]$, defined the concept of Heffter array in order to provide explicit constructions of $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$-regular biembeddings of complete graphs $K_v$ into orientable surfaces. In this paper, we first introduce the quasi-Heffter arrays as a generalization of the concept of Heffer array and we show that, in this context, we can define a $2$-colorable embedding of Archdeacon type of the complete multipartite graph $K_{\frac{v}{t}\times t}$ into an orientable surface. Then, our main goal is to study the full automorphism groups of these embeddings: here we are able to prove, using a probabilistic approach, that, almost always, this group is exactly $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$. As an application of this result, given a positive integer $t\not\equiv 0\pmod{4}$, we prove that there are, for infinitely many pairs of $v$ and $k$, at least $(1-o(1)) \frac{(\frac{v-t}{2})!}{φ(v)} $ non-isomorphic biembeddings of $K_{\frac{v}{t}\times t}$ whose face lengths are multiples of $k$. Here $φ(\cdot)$ denotes the Euler's totient function. Moreover, in case $t=1$ and $v$ is a prime, almost all these embeddings define faces that are all of the same length $kv$, i.e. we have a more than exponential number of non-isomorphic $kv$-gonal biembeddings of $K_{v}$.
Mutually orthogonal cycle systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
An ${\ell}$-cycle system ${\mathcal F}$ of a graph $Γ$ is a set of ${\ell}$-cycles which partition the edge set of $Γ$. Two such cycle systems ${\mathcal F}$ and ${\mathcal F}'$ are said to be {\em orthogonal} if no two distinct cycles from ${\mathcal F}\cup {\mathcal F}'$ share more than one edge. Orthogonal cycle systems naturally arise from face $2$-colourable polyehdra and in higher genus from Heffter arrays with certain orderings. A set of pairwise orthogonal $\ell$-cycle systems of $Γ$ is said to be a set of mutually orthogonal cycle systems of $Γ$. Let $μ(\ell,n)$ (respectively, $μ'(\ell,n)$) be the maximum integer $μ$ such that there exists a set of $μ$ mutually orthogonal (cyclic) $\ell$-cycle systems of the complete graph $K_n$. We show that if $\ell\geq 4$ is even and $n\equiv 1\pmod{2\ell}$, then $μ'(\ell,n)$, and hence $μ(\ell,n)$, is bounded below by a constant multiple of $n/\ell^2$. In contrast, we obtain the following upper bounds: $μ(\ell,n)\leq n-2$; $μ(\ell,n)\leq (n-2)(n-3)/(2(\ell-3))$ when $\ell \geq 4$; $μ(\ell,n)\leq 1$ when $\ell>n/\sqrt{2}$; and $μ'(\ell,n)\leq n-3$ when $n \geq 4$. We also obtain computational results for small values of $n$ and $\ell$.

On the number of non-isomorphic (simple) $k$-gonal biembeddings of complete multipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article aims to provide exponential lower bounds on the number of non-isomorphic $k$-gonal biembeddings of the complete multipartite graph into orientable surfaces. For this purpose, we use the concept, introduced by Archdeacon in 2015, of Heffer array and its relations with graph embeddings. In particular we show that, under certain hypotheses, from a single Heffter array, we can obtain an exponential number of distinct graph embeddings. Exploiting this idea starting from the arrays constructed by Cavenagh, Donovan and Yazici in 2020, we obtain that, for infinitely many values of $k$ and $v$, there are at least $k^{\frac{k}{2}+o(k)} \cdot 2^{v\cdot \frac{H(1/4)}{(2k)^2}+o(v)}$ non-isomorphic $k$-gonal biembeddings of $K_v$, where $H(\cdot)$ is the binary entropy. Moreover about the embeddings of $K_{\frac{v}{t}\times t}$, for $t\in\{1,2,k\}$, we provide a construction of $2^{v\cdot \frac{H(1/4)}{2k(k-1)}+o(v,k)}$ non-isomorphic $k$-gonal biembeddings whenever $k$ is odd and $v$ belongs to a wide infinite family of values.
