On externally supported independence number of graphs
We introduce the \emph{externally supported independence number} $α_{\rm es}(G)$ of a graph $G$ as the maximum cardinality of an independent set $B$ with an additional condition, that vertices from $N(B)$ are dominated by vertices in $V(G)-N[B]$. This parameter yields an improved upper bound on the isolation number $ι(G)$. We show that computing $α_{\rm es}(G)$ is NP-hard, while for trees we present a linear-time algorithm. We also establish several sharp bounds on $α_{\rm es}(G)$ for general graphs, with additional refined results for trees. In several cases, we completely describe the extreme graph classes attaining these bounds.

Finite-Kernel Extremizers in Sparse Extremal Graph Counting
We develop a finite-kernel framework for sparse extremal graph counting. The problems considered here ask for the maximum number of copies or homomorphisms of a fixed graph under sparse edge constraints. In this regime, the leading term need not be governed by a single dense block. Instead, the extremal mass may be supported on several interacting asymptotic scales. Our framework identifies these scales via a finite-dimensional linear program, separates the leading contributions through a finite state decomposition, and synchronizes or realizes them inside a finite kernel. We apply this framework in three settings. First, we prove the sparse threshold conjecture of Day and Sarkar for graphons. For every fixed graph $H$ without isolated vertices, we prove that \[ \sup_{t(K_2,W)\le β} t(H,W)=β^{|V(H)|-α^*(H)}(C_T(H)+o(1)) \] as $β\to0$, where $α^*(H)$ is the fractional independence number of $H$ and $C_T(H)$ is an explicit sharp constant attained by a three-step threshold graphon. Second, we affirmatively answer a question of Blekherman and Patel by showing that, for every graph $H$, whenever $m\to\infty$ and $m=o(n^{3/2})$, threshold graphs asymptotically maximize $\hom(H,G)$ among all graphs with at most $n$ vertices and at most $m$ edges. Third, Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós, and Vizer conjectured that, among all bipartite graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, the quasi-complete bipartite graph asymptotically maximizes the number of copies of every fixed bipartite graph $H$ whenever $m=ω(n)$ and $m\le n^2/4$. We disprove this conjecture in the subquadratic range and give the correct order of magnitude in terms of $κ_H(n,m)$, a finite-kernel scale defined by a finite-dimensional variational problem.

Conformability is NP-complete, even on connected regular graphs
A graph $G$ is conformable if it admits a proper $(Δ(G)+1)$-coloring in which, among the $Δ(G)+1$ color classes including the empty ones, at most $\sum_{v\in V(G)}(Δ(G)-d_G(v))$ have parity different from that of $|V(G)|$. The complexity of deciding conformability was left open in recent work, and positive results for several graph classes had suggested that the problem might be polynomial-time solvable. We settle the general problem by proving that Conformability is NP-complete. Hardness holds even for connected regular graphs $G$ of odd order with independence number $α(G)=3$ and maximum degree $Δ(G)\ge |V(G)|/2$. In particular, NP-completeness persists when every color class is forced to have the parity of the order. The reduction starts from perfect triangle packing in graphs of clique number three, regularizes the source graph while preserving the relevant triangle packings, and then takes the complement. In the complement, conformable color classes correspond to odd cliques of the regularized graph; $K_4$-freeness restricts these cliques to singletons or triangles, and the number of available colors forces exactly the required number of disjoint triangles.

Bipartite cuts in Ramsey-Turán style
We prove that every $K_5$-free $n$-vertex graph with sublinear independence number can be made bipartite by removing at most $n^2(1/18+o(1))$ edges, where the constant $1/18$ is best possible. The proof method is related to extensions of Turán Theorem in edge-weighted settings, and part of the proof uses flag algebra.
Monadic dependence from reducts, and applications to twin-width of oriented graphs
We study monadic dependence of binary relational structures including at least one antisymmetric relation. Our cornerstone result gives sufficient conditions for proving that a structure is monadically dependent by only considering some of its reducts, assuming they are structurally well-behaved and compatible enough. As an application, we consider some reorientation rules preserving monadic dependence of binary structures, as well as replacement of one antisymmetric relation with bounded independence number by another. Then, we apply our main (technical) result to the study of twin-width in two ways. First, generalizing the fact that twin-width boundedness is equivalent to being expandable by a linear order into a monadically dependent class, we prove that it is also equivalent to being expandable by an oriented graph with bounded independence number (for instance by a poset with bounded width or by a tournament), and that FO-model checking is fixed-parameter tractable on such an expansion. Second, we show delineation by twin-width for some new classes of oriented graphs, including oriented split graphs and local tournaments. In all these cases, we also obtain fixed-parameter tractability of FO-model checking.
A Counterexample to Wegner's Conjecture for Axis-Parallel Rectangles
In 1965, Wegner conjectured that every finite family \(\mathcal R\) of axis-parallel rectangles in the plane satisfies \(τ(\mathcal R) \le 2ν(\mathcal R)-1\), where \(τ(\mathcal R)\) denotes the minimum number of points needed to pierce all rectangles in \(\mathcal R\), and \(ν(\mathcal R)\) denotes the maximum size of a pairwise disjoint subfamily. Over the last six decades, the conjecture has motivated a long line of work: it has been verified for several special classes of rectangle families, and the best known general upper bounds have been progressively improved, but the conjecture itself had remained open. We give an explicit counterexample. More precisely, we construct a triangle-free rectangle-intersection graph on \(n\) vertices whose independence number is at most \(n/4\). Since the graph is triangle-free, no point of the plane can lie in three rectangles; hence every piercing point hits at most two rectangles. Consequently, \(τ(\mathcal R) \ge n/2 \ge 2ν(\mathcal R)\), contradicting Wegner's conjectured bound. We also give a slightly more general construction for which \(τ(\mathcal R) \ge 2.21ν(\mathcal R)\). This shows that the standard point relaxation, equivalently the clique relaxation, for the Maximum Independent Set of Rectangles problem has integrality gap at least \(2.21\).
The independence number of uncrowded hypergraphs: bounds matching the shattering threshold
A foundational theorem of Ajtai, Komlós, Pintz, Spencer, and Szemerédi asserts that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform uncrowded hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$ contains an independent set of size $c_k n{\left(\frac{\log Δ}Δ\right)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}}$, for some constant $c_k>0$. Determining the optimal leading constant $c_k$ in this bound is a major open problem. A natural target is the so-called shattering-threshold constant $\left(\frac{1}{k-1}\right)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}$, which appears in the solution-space geometry of random constraint satisfaction problems, in average-case complexity theory, and in statistical physics, among other areas. We prove that uncrowded hypergraphs attain this threshold. More precisely, for every $ε>0$ and $k\geq 2$, every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform uncrowded hypergraph of sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$ contains an independent set of size at least $(1-ε) n {\left(\frac{1}{k-1}\frac{\log Δ}Δ\right)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}}$. Consequently, we obtain the first pseudorandom class of hypergraphs whose guaranteed independence number matches the shattering threshold, resolving a folklore conjecture. Moreover, as another direct consequence, we resolve a conjecture of Verstraëte and Wilson by proving that there exists a constant $c_k=1-o_k(1)$ such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform linear hypergraph of maximum degree $Δ$ has independence number at least $c_k n\left(\frac{\log Δ}Δ\right)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}$. Our techniques are constructive yielding efficient algorithms for both static and distributed settings. Specifically, we provide an $\tilde O(nΔ)$-time randomized static algorithm and an $\tilde O(1)$-round randomized $\textsf{LOCAL}$ algorithm to find an independent set in uncrowded hypergraphs at the shattering threshold. These results extend seamlessly to the the setting of linear hypergraphs.

On independent sets in uncrowded uniform hypergraphs
We prove an average-degree lower bound on the independence number of uncrowded uniform hypergraphs. For every fixed integer $r\geq 2$ and every $η>0$, there exists $d_*=d_*(r,η)$ such that for every $d\geq d_*$, any uncrowded $(r+1)$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $n$ vertices and average degree $d$ satisfies \[ α(G)\geq (1-η)r^{-1/r}\left(\frac{\log d}{d}\right)^{1/r}n. \] The proof combines a cleaning procedure, which reduces the maximum $r$-degree to the average scale, with a random nibble that repeatedly extracts independent vertices while controlling all lower-order degrees created by the process. After an initial top-layer cleaning, we run a trace nibble. Since the residual hypergraph contains traces of all sizes $2,\ldots,r+1$, we track the maximum degrees in every layer. A binomial-type recurrence for this degree profile yields the stated leading constant.

Ramsey-Turán Type Problem for Perfect Transitive Triangle Tilings in Digraphs
The classical Corrádi-Hajnal theorem states that for any multiple $n$ of $3$, if $G$ is a graph with $n$ vertices and $δ(G) \geq 2n/3$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/3$ vertex-disjoint copies of the triangle [\emph{Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung.}, 14:423-439, 1964]. Balogh, Molla and Sharifzadeh obtained a smaller lower bound by adding the independence number condition [\emph{Random Struct. Algorithms}, 49:669-693, 2016]. In this paper, we study perfect tilings in digraphs subject to conditions on the independence number and the degree. The independence number, $α(D)$, of $D$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $D$ has an independent set of cardinality $k$. We show that if $D$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with $α(D)\leq o(1)n$ and $δ(D) \geq (1+o(1))n$, then $D$ has a perfect $T_3$-tiling, where $T_3$ denotes a transitive triangle. This minimum degree condition is asymptotically best possible. Moreover, our result implies the theorem of Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh concerning perfect triangle tilings.

Improved bounds on the b-chromatic number using the independence and chromatic numbers
A b-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper vertex coloring where each color class contains at least one vertex (a b-vertex) adjacent to a vertex in every other color class. The maximum number of colors in such a coloring is the b-chromatic number, ${\rm b}(G)$. A ${\rm b}^{\ast}$-coloring is a variation in which a b-vertex is adjacent to a b-vertex in every other color class. We employ the ${\rm b}^{\ast}$-coloring to prove that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with independence number at most $t$ satisfies ${\rm b}(G) \leq ((t-1)n+tχ(G))/(2t-1)$. This bound extends the bounds of Kouider and Zaker (2006) and Alkhateeb and Kohl (2011). We show that this bound is sharp for all $t\geq 2$ and $χ(G)\geq 3$. Furthermore, we provide a refined bound based on the maximum number of vertex-disjoint independent sets of size $t$. Finally, we present an upper bound on the ${\rm b}^{\ast}$-chromatic number of $K_{1,s}$-free graphs.

On graphs whose cycle space is spanned by their Hamilton cycles
The cycle space of a graph $G$, denoted $\mathcal{C}(G)$, is a vector space over ${\mathbb F}_2$, spanned by all incidence vectors of edge-sets of cycles of $G$. If $G$ has $n$ vertices, then $\mathcal{C}_n(G)$ denotes the subspace of $\mathcal{C}(G)$, spanned by the incidence vectors of Hamilton cycles of $G$. We consider several known sufficient conditions for Hamiltonicity and show that an appropriate and fairly mild strengthening of each such condition in fact ensures the stronger property $\mathcal{C}_n(G) = \mathcal{C}(G)$. In particular, we consider the classical Chvátal-Erdős criterion and prove that (under various additional restrictions) if $n$ is odd and $κ(G) \geq c α(G)$, where $c$ is a sufficiently large absolute constant, then $\mathcal{C}_n(G) = \mathcal{C}(G)$. Moreover, considering the McDiarmid-Yolov criterion we prove that if $n$ is odd and $δ(G) \geq \max \left\{2 \tildeα(G) + 9, \tildeα(G) + 18 \right\}$, where $\tildeα(G)$ is the so-called bipartite independence number of $G$, then $\mathcal{C}_n(G) = \mathcal{C}(G)$. We also prove that if $n$ is odd and $G$ admits $16 α(G) + 12$ pairwise disjoint connected dominating sets, $\mathcal{C}_n(G) = \mathcal{C}(G)$. Finally, we consider an effective Chvátal-Erdős type criterion for bipartite graphs and prove that if $G$ is a balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices, satisfying $α_{\emph{BIP}}(G) \leq 2 δ(G) - 24$, then $\mathcal{C}_{2n}(G) = \mathcal{C}(G)$.
Geometric Sidon Problems
This paper considers geometric problems of the following type: given a point set $P \subset \mathbb R^2$, one seeks a large subset avoiding a prescribed geometric configuration. Our main result states that, for any $P \subset \mathbb R^2$, there exists a subset $P' \subset P$ with $|P'| \gg |P|^{1/3}$ such that all of the distances determined by $P'$ are distinct. This improves a result of Charalambides. We make heavy use of a result of Li and Postle concerning the independence number of hypergraphs which satisfy some edge distribution conditions, as well as tools from incidence geometry.

A note on the Ratio and Inertia Bounds for the $k$-Independence Number
The $k$-th power $G^k$ of a graph $G$ is the graph on the same vertex set where the edge set consists of those pairs of distinct vertices of $G$ that are at distance at most $k$ from each other. A. Abiad, G. Coutinho, and M. A. Fiol [On the $k$-independence number of graphs, Discrete Mathematics 342 (2019), 2875--2885] proposed extensions of the classical ratio (for regular graphs) and inertia bounds to the independence number of $G^k$ for $k\ge 2$. Continuing a line of work comparing these two parameters with other known bounds, we show that the $\vartheta$-function of L. Lovász and the weighted inertia bound of A. R. Calderbank and P. Frankl, when applied directly to $G^k$, perform at least as well as the ratio and inertia bounds of Abiad-Coutinho-Fiol, respectively. In particular, $\vartheta(G^k)$ provides a polynomial-time computable upper bound on the independence number of $G^k$ that is at least as strong as the ratio bound when the latter applies (i.e.,\ when the graph $G$ is regular).

Pancyclicity of graphs perturbed by a random $F$-factor
Resolving a conjecture of Espuny Díaz and Girão [Random Structures Algorithms, 2023], we determine the sharp minimum-degree threshold for Hamiltonicity in graphs perturbed by a uniformly random $K_r$-factor. In fact, we prove the stronger pancyclic statement. More generally, for each fixed connected graph $F$, we study the union of an arbitrary deterministic graph of linear minimum degree and a uniformly random $F$-factor. Let $α^*(F)$ and $α_{\text{pan}}^*(F)$ denote the corresponding Hamiltonicity and pancyclicity thresholds. We introduce two new parameters, $τ_{\text{pc}}(F)$ and $τ_{\text{ind}}(F)$, defined by the expected path-cover number and independence number of random induced subgraphs of $F$, and prove \[ τ_{\text{pc}}(F)\le α^*(F)\le α_{\text{pan}}^*(F)\le τ_{\text{ind}}(F). \] For $F=K_r$, the two parameters coincide and are equal to the unique positive solution $ρ_r$ of $x^r+rx-1=0$. Hence $α^*(K_r)=α_{\text{pan}}^*(K_r)=ρ_r$ for every $r\ge2$.

The Abu-Khzam$\unicode{x2013}$Langston Conjecture for Graphs with $α(G) = 2$
The Abu-Khzam--Langston conjecture, that is the weak-immersion analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture and a weak version of an earlier conjecture of Lescure and Meyniel, asserts that every graph $G$ contains a weak immersion of $K_{χ(G)}$. We prove the conjecture for the class of graphs of independence number two. Along the way, we introduce a notion of \emph{cycle-matching colouring} of a graph, a relaxation of edge-colouring in which colour classes induce vertex-disjoint unions of edges and odd cycles, and prove a sharpening of Vizing's theorem in this setting: every multigraph admits a cycle-matching colouring with at most $Δ(G)$ colours.
Ramsey properties for tilings in random graphs
Let $mH$ be the graph formed by $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of a graph $H$. Let $G \to (H)_r$ denote that, in any $r$-colouring of the edges of $G$, there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$. In 1975, Burr, Erdős, and Spencer showed that if $H$ is a graph on $k$ vertices whose independence number is $α$, then $K_n \to (mH)_2$, where $m\sim n/(2k-α)$, and that the $1/(2k-α)$ factor is best possible. In the 1990s, Rödl and Ruciński proved that, for all but a few graphs~$H$, the threshold for the property $\mathbb{G}(n,p) \to (H)_r$ is $n^{-1/m_2(H)}$. In this paper, generalizing the result of Burr, Erdős, and Spencer, we prove that $n^{-1/\max\{m_2(H),1\}}$ is the threshold for the property $\mathbb{G}(n,p) \to (mH)_2$, where $m\sim n/(2k-α)$. This threshold matches the one found by Rödl and Ruciński for most graphs $H$, extending their result in the case $r=2$.

Betti numbers for cochordal zero-divisor graphs of commutative rings
This paper studies the zero-divisor graphs attached to several finite chain-ring families and computes the homological invariants of their edge ideals by using cochordal constructible systems. We begin with a general layered graph $C(q,L)$, whose vertices are arranged according to valuation layers and whose adjacency is governed by the single rule $k+\ell\ge L$, form some integers $k$ and $\ell$. This graph models the zero-divisor structure of a finite chain ring with residue field of order $q$ and nilpotency index $L$. We prove that $C(q,L)$ is cochordal, determine its type sequence, then correct and refine the Betti formula of its edge ideal [Dung and Vu, Cochordal zero divisor graphs and Betti numbers of their edge ideals, Comm. Algebra 54(2) (2026) 736--744]. The results are then specialized to the Gaussian quotient rings $\mathbb Z_{2^m}[i]$ and to the truncated polynomial rings $\mathbb Z_p[x]/(x^c)$. We compute projective dimension, regularity, independence number, height, Hilbert series, and Cohen--Macaulay behavior. The computations show that these quotient rings have $2$-linear resolutions, while Cohen--Macaulayness occurs only in the expected degenerate or complete-graph cases.

The average distance of spanning trees in terms of independence number
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$, and denote by $d_G(u,v)$ the distance from $u$ to $v$ in $G$, for any $u,v \in V(G)$. The average distance of an $n$-vertex connected graph $G$, denoted by $μ(G)$, is defined to be the average of all distances between all pairs of vertices in $G$, i.e., $μ(G) = \binom{n}{2}^{-1} \sum_{\{u,v\} \subset V(G)}d_G(u,v)$. The problem of finding a spanning tree of minimum average distance is known to be NP-hard, so establishing an upper bound for the minimum average distance among all spanning trees is of particular interest. Mukwembi (J. Graph Theory, 2014) showed that if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n$ with independence number $α$, where $n > 2 α- 1$, then $G$ has a spanning tree $T$ such that $μ(T) \le α+ 2$. In this paper, we first improve the upper bound to $μ(T) < α+ 1$ for $α\ge 1$, and then we find the bound could be further improved when $α$ becomes larger, so a better upper bound \[ μ(T) < \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} α+1 & \hbox{if } 1\leα\le 6,\\ α+\frac12+\frac{4(α-1)}{α^2} & \hbox{if } α\ge 7, \end{array} \right. \] is established later. In the end, we give a remark to indicate our new upper bound is best possible in the sense of asymptotics (when $n$ and $α$ are large enough).

Coloring graphs with independence number two and no odd clique immersions
We study the chromatic number of graphs that exclude a clique as a strong odd immersion and have independence number two. Given a graph $G$ and $t\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, we prove that if $α(G)\leq 2$ and $G$ has no strong odd $K_t$-immersion, then $χ(G)\leq \lceil \frac{3(t-1)}{2}\rceil$.

Optimization and complexity of inertia-type bounds on the independence and chromatic numbers of graph powers
The inertia bound, introduced by Cvetković in 1971, is a fundamental result in spectral graph theory that provides an upper bound for the independence number of a graph in terms of spectral information about a weighted adjacency matrix of the graph. Recently, this bound has been extended to the socalled inertia-type bounds for estimating the independence and chromatic numbers of graph powers ($k$-independence number and distance-$k$ chromatic number of a graph). These bounds have recently found applications in coding theory and quantum information theory. The inertia-type bounds depend on the choice of a polynomial of degree $k$ and on the eigenvalues of the graph. Currently, optimizing these bounds requires solving several MILPs, which quickly becomes computationally demanding as the graph size or $k$ grows. This computational barrier is a major obstacle to the practical use of these bounds. Moreover, we have a limited theoretical understanding of their performance, even for small $k$. In this paper, we investigate their optimization and complexity. In particular, we improve the MILP formulations, reducing their computational burden and significantly decreasing the running time. Furthermore, we show that the optimization problems associated with the bounds are solvable in polynomial time for fixed $k$ and for small $k$.
