Let ${\varPi}_n$ be the set of convex polygonal lines $\varGamma$ with vertices on $\mathbb {Z}_+^2$ and fixed endpoints $0=(0,0)$ and $n=(n_1,n_2)$. We are concerned with the limit shape, as $n\to\infty$, of "typical" $\varGamma\in {\varPi}_n$ with respect to a parametric family of probability measures $\{P_n^r,0<r<\infty\}$ on ${\varPi}_n$, including the uniform distribution ($r=1$) for which the limit shape was found in the early 1990s independently by A. M. Vershik, I. Bárány and Ya. G. Sinai. We show that, in fact, the limit shape is universal in the class $\{P^r_n\}$, even though $P^r_n$ ($r\ne1$) and $P^1_n$ are asymptotically singular. Measures $P^r_n$ are constructed, following Sinai's approach, as conditional distributions $Q_z^r(\cdot |{\varPi}_n)$, where $Q_z^r$ are suitable product measures on the space ${\varPi}=\bigcup_n{\varPi}_n$, depending on an auxiliary "free" parameter $z=(z_1,z_2)$. The transition from $({\varPi},Q_z^r)$ to $({\varPi}_n,P_n^r)$ is based on the asymptotics of the probability $Q_z^r({\varPi}_n)$, furnished by a certain two-dimensional local limit theorem. The proofs involve subtle analytical tools including the Möbius inversion formula and properties of zeroes of the Riemann zeta function.
Some variants of the exponential formula, with application to the multivariate Tutte polynomial (alias Potts model)

We prove some variants of the exponential formula and apply them to the multivariate Tutte polynomials (also known as Potts-model partition functions) of graphs. We also prove some further identities for the multivariate Tutte polynomial, which generalize an identity for counting connected graphs found by Riordan, Nijenhuis, Wilf and Kreweras and in more general form by Leroux and Gessel, and an identity for the inversion enumerator of trees found by Mallows, Riordan and Kreweras. Finally, we prove a generalization of Mobius inversion on the partition lattice.
Möbius Functions and Semigroup Representation Theory II: Character formulas and multiplicities

We generalize the character formulas for multiplicities of irreducible constituents from group theory to semigroup theory using Rota's theory of Möbius inversion. The technique works for a large class of semigroups including: inverse semigroups, semigroups with commuting idempotents, idempotent semigroups and semigroups with basic algebras. Using these tools we are able to give a complete description of the spectra of random walks on finite semigroups admitting a faithful representation by upper triangular matrices over the complex numbers. These include the random walks on chambers of hyperplane arrangements studied by Bidigare, Hanlon, Rockmere, Brown and Diaconis. Applications are also given to decomposing tensor powers and exterior products of rook matrix representations of inverse semigroups, generalizing and simplifying earlier results of Solomon for the rook monoid.
The associative operad and the weak order on the symmetric groups
The associative operad is a certain algebraic structure on the sequence of group algebras of the symmetric groups. The weak order is a partial order on the symmetric group. There is a natural linear basis of each symmetric group algebra, related to the group basis by Mobius inversion for the weak order. We describe the operad structure on this second basis: the surprising result is that each operadic composition is a sum over an interval of the weak order. We deduce that the coradical filtration is an operad filtration. The Lie operad, a suboperad of the associative operad, sits in the first component of the filtration. As a corollary to our results, we derive a simple explicit expression for Dynkin's idempotent in terms of the second basis.
There are combinatorial procedures for constructing a planar binary tree from a permutation, and a composition from a planar binary tree. These define set-theoretic quotients of each symmetric group algebra. We show that they are operad quotients of the associative operad. Moreover, the Hopf kernels of these quotient maps are suboperads of the associative operad.

We introduce the matroid-minor coalgebra C, which has labeled matroids as distinguished basis, and coproduct given by splitting a matroid into a submatroid and complementary contraction all possible ways. We introduce two new bases for C; the first of these is is related to the distinguished basis by Mobius inversion over the rank-preserving weak order on matroids, the second by Mobius inversion over the suborder excluding matroids that are irreducible with respect to the free product operation. We show that the subset of each of these bases corresponding to the set of irreducible matroids is a basis for the subspace of primitive elements of C. Projecting C onto the matroid-minor Hopf algebra H, we obtain bases for the subspace of primitive elements of H.

We analyze the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations in detail. We give explicit formulas for its antipode, prove that it is a cofree coalgebra, determine its primitive elements and its coradical filtration, and show that it decomposes as a crossed product over the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. In addition, we describe the structure constants of the multiplication as a certain number of facets of the permutahedron. As a consequence we obtain a new interpretation of the product of monomial quasi-symmetric functions in terms of the facial structure of the cube. The Hopf algebra of Malvenuto and Reutenauer has a linear basis indexed by permutations. Our results are obtained from a combinatorial description of the Hopf algebraic structure with respect to a new basis for this algebra, related to the original one via Möbius inversion on the weak order on the symmetric groups. This is in analogy with the relationship between the monomial and fundamental bases of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. Our results reveal a close relationship between the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra and the weak order on the symmetric groups.
