A combinatorial analysis of interacting diffusions

We consider a particular class of n-dimensional homogeneous diffusions all of which have an identity diffusion matrix and a drift function that is piecewise constant and scale invariant. Abstract stochastic calculus immediately gives us general results about existence and uniqueness in law and invariant probability distributions when they exist. These invariant distributions are probability measures on the $n$-dimensional space and can be extremely resistant to a more detailed understanding. To have a better analysis, we construct a polyhedra such that the inward normal at its surface is given by the drift function and show that the finer structures of the invariant probability measure is intertwined with the geometry of the polyhedra. We show that several natural interacting Brownian particle models can thus be analyzed by studying the combinatorial fan generated by the drift function, particularly when these are simplicial. This is the case when the polyhedra is a polytope that is invariant under a Coxeter group action, which leads to an explicit description of the invariant measures in terms of iid Exponential random variables. Another class of examples is furnished by interactions indexed by weighted graphs all of which generate simplicial polytopes with $n !$ faces. We show that the proportion of volume contained in each component simplex corresponds to a probability distribution on the group of permutations, some of which have surprising connections with the classical urn models.
Intersection matrices revisited

Several intersection matrices of $s$-subsets vs. $k$-subsets of a $v$-set are introduced in the literature. We study these matrices systematically through counting arguments and generating function techniques. A number of new or known identities appear as natural consequences of this viewpoint; especially, appearance of the derivative operator $d/dz$ and some related operators reveals some connections between intersection matrices and the "combinatorics of creation-annihilation". As application, the eigenvalues of several intersection matrices including some generalizations of the adjacency matrices of the Johnson scheme are derived; two new bases for the Bose--Mesner algebra of the Johnson scheme are introduced and the associated intersection numbers are obtained as well. Finally, we determine the rank of some intersection matrices.
Major Index for 01-Fillings of Moon Polyominoes

We propose a major index statistic on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes which, when specialized to certain shapes, reduces to the major index for permutations and set partitions. We consider the set F(M, s; A) of all 01-fillings of a moon polyomino M with given column sum s whose empty rows are A, and prove that this major index has the same distribution as the number of north-east chains, which are the natural extension of inversions (resp. crossings) for permutations (resp. set partitions). Hence our result generalizes the classical equidistribution results for the permutation statistics inv and maj. Two proofs are presented. The first is an algebraic one using generating functions, and the second is a bijection on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes in the spirit of Foata's second fundamental transformation on words and permutations.
On the cardinality constrained matroid polytope

Given a combinatorial optimization problem $Π$ and an increasing finite sequence $c$ of natural numbers, we obtain a cardinality constrained version $Π_c$ of $Π$ by permitting only those feasible solutions of $Π$ whose cardinalities are members of $c$. We are interested in polyhedra associated with those problems, in particular in inequalities that cut off solutions of forbidden cardinality. Maurras (1977) and Camion and Maurras (1982) introduced a family of inequalities, that we call forbidden set inequalities, which can be used to cut off those solutions. However, these inequalities are in general not facet defining for the polyhedron associated with $Π_c$. Kaibel and Stephan (2007) showed how one can combine integer characterizations for cycle and path polytopes and a modified form of forbidden set inequalities to give facet defining integer representations for the cardinality restricted versions of these polytopes. Motivated by this work, we apply the same approach on the matroid polytope. It is well known that the so-called rank inequalities together with the nonnegativity constraints provide a complete linear description of the matroid polytope (see Edmonds (1971). By essentially adding the forbidden set inequalities in an appropriate form, we obtain a complete linear description of the cardinality constrained matroid polytope which is the convex hull of the incidence vectors of those independent sets that have a feasible cardinality. Moreover, we show how the separation problem for the forbidden set inequalities can be reduced to that for the rank inequalities. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a forbidden set inequality to be facet defining.

We introduce the class of projective reflection groups which includes all complex reflection groups. We show that several aspects involving the combinatorics and the representation theory of all non exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups find a natural description in this wider setting.
Multigraphs (only) satisfy a weak triangle removal lemma

The triangle removal lemma states that a simple graph with o(n^3) triangles can be made triangle-free by removing o(n^2) edges. It is natural to ask if this widely used result can be extended to multi-graphs (or equivalently, weighted graphs). In this short paper we rule out the possibility of such an extension by showing that there are multi-graphs with only n^{2+o(1)} triangles that are still far from being triangle-free. On the other hand, we show that for some g(n)=ω(1), if a multi-graph (or weighted graph) has only g(n)n^2 triangles then it must be close to being triangle-free. The proof relies on variants of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem.
Splicing Matroids

We introduce and study a natural variant of matroid amalgams. For matroids M(A) and N(B) such that M/(A-B)=N(B-A), we define a splice of M and N to be a matroid L on the union of A and B with L(B-A)=M and L/(A-B)=N. We show that splices exist for each such pair of matroids M and N; furthermore, there is a freest splice of M and N, which we call the free splice. We characterize when a matroid L(E) is the free splice of L\U and L/V for subsets U and V of E. We study minors of free splices and the interaction between free splice and several other matroid operations. Although free splice is not an associative operation, we prove a weakened counterpart of associativity that holds in general and we characterize the triples for which associativity holds. We also study free splice as it relates to various classes of matroids.
The Algebra of Filters of a Cubic Algebra
In this paper we discuss the inclusion ordering on the filters of a filter algebra, a special type of Metropolis-Rota algeba. Using embeddings into interval algebras we show that the notion of "untwisted" gives rise to a congruence relation on the group of g-filters. We also show that there is a natural reflection operator on the class of filters with an easily definable enveloping cubic subalgebra.

We develop a new approach to the representation theory of quantum algebras supporting a torus action via methods from the theory of finite-state automata and algebraic combinatorics. We show that for a fixed number $m$, the torus-invariant primitive ideals in $m\times n$ quantum matrices can be seen as a regular language in a natural way. Using this description and a semigroup approach to the set of Cauchon diagrams, a combinatorial object that paramaterizes the primes that are torus-invariant, we show that for $m$ fixed, the number of torus-invariant primitive ideals in $m\times n$ quantum matrices satisfies a linear recurrence in $n$ over the rational numbers. In the $3\times n$ case we give a concrete description of the torus-invariant primitive ideals and use this description to give an explicit formula for the number P(3,n).
The Circular Chromatic Number of the Mycielskian of Mt(Kn)
As a natural generalization of chromatic number of a graph, the circular chromatic number of graphs (or the star chromatic number) was introduced by A.Vince in 1988. Let $M^t(G)$ denote the $t$th iterated Mycielski graph of $G$. It was conjectured by Chang, Huang and Zhu(Discrete mathematics,205(1999), 23-37) that for all $n \ge t+2, χ_c(M^t(K_n))=χ(M^t(K_n))=n+t.$ In 2004, D.D.F. Liu proved the conjecture when $t\ge 2$, $n\ge 2^{t-1}+2t-2$. In this paper,we show that the result can be strengthened to the following: if $t\ge 4$, $n\ge {11/12}2^{t-1}+2t+{1/3}$, then $χ_c(M^t(K_n))=χ(M^t(K_n))$.

In this paper, we extend the recently introduced concept of partially dual ribbon graphs to graphs. We then go on to characterize partial duality of graphs in terms of bijections between edge sets of corresponding graphs. This result generalizes a well known result of J. Edmonds in which natural duality of graphs is characterized in terms of edge correspondence, and gives a combinatorial characterization of partial duality.
Avoiding Squares and Overlaps Over the Natural Numbers

We consider avoiding squares and overlaps over the natural numbers, using a greedy algorithm that chooses the least possible integer at each step; the word generated is lexicographically least among all such infinite words. In the case of avoiding squares, the word is 01020103..., the familiar ruler function, and is generated by iterating a uniform morphism. The case of overlaps is more challenging. We give an explicitly-defined morphism phi : N* -> N* that generates the lexicographically least infinite overlap-free word by iteration. Furthermore, we show that for all h,k in N with h <= k, the word phi^{k-h}(h) is the lexicographically least overlap-free word starting with the letter h and ending with the letter k, and give some of its symmetry properties.

Algebraic curves have a discrete analogue in finite graphs. Pursuing this analogy we prove a Torelli theorem for graphs. Namely, we show that two graphs have the same Albanese torus if and only if the graphs obtained from them by contracting all separating edges are 2-isomorphic. In particular, the strong Torelli theorem holds for 3-connected graphs. Next, using the correspondence between compact tropical curves and metric graphs, we prove a tropical Torelli theorem giving necessary and sufficient conditions for two tropical curves to have the same principally polarized tropical Jacobian. Finally we describe some natural posets associated to a graph and prove that they characterize its Delaunay decomposition.

A causal set is a partially ordered set on a countably infinite ground-set such that each element is above finitely many others. A natural extension of a causal set is an enumeration of its elements which respects the order. We bring together two different classes of random processes. In one class, we are given a fixed causal set, and we consider random natural extensions of this causal set: we think of the random enumeration as being generated one point at a time. In the other class of processes, we generate a random causal set, working from the bottom up, adding one new maximal element at each stage. Processes of both types can exhibit a property called order-invariance: if we stop the process after some fixed number of steps, then, conditioned on the structure of the causal set, every possible order of generation of its elements is equally likely. We develop a framework for the study of order-invariance which includes both types of example: order-invariance is then a property of probability measures on a certain space. Our main result is a description of the extremal order-invariant measures.
Order-invariant measures on fixed causal sets

A causal set is a countably infinite poset in which every element is above finitely many others; causal sets are exactly the posets that have a linear extension with the order-type of the natural numbers -- we call such a linear extension a {\em natural extension}. We study probability measures on the set of natural extensions of a causal set, especially those measures having the property of {\em order-invariance}: if we condition on the set of the bottom $k$ elements of the natural extension, each possible ordering among these $k$ elements is equally likely. We give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of an order-invariant measure on the set of natural extensions of a causal set.

The way to arrive at formula of zeta matrix for any graded posets with the finite set of minimal elements is delivered following the first reference. This is being achieved via adjacency and zeta matrix description of bipartite digraphs chains, the representatives of graded posets. The bipartite digraphs elements of such chains amalgamate to form corresponding cover relation graded poset digraphs with corresponding adjacency matrices being amalgamated throughout natural join as special adequate database operation. The colligation of reachability and connectivity with the presented description is made explicit. The special posets encoded via kodags directed acyclic graphs as cobeb posets cover relations digraphs are recognized as an example of differential posets subfamily. As on this night one reminisce anniversary of death of distinguished johann bernoulli the first this sylvester night article is to commemorate this date.
Equivariant classes of matrix matroid varieties
Consider an integer associated with every subset of the set of columns of an $n\times k$ matrix. The collection of those matrices for which the rank of a union of columns is the predescribed integer for every subset, will be denoted by $X_C$. We study the equivariant cohomology class represented by the Zariski closure $Y_C$ of this set. We show that the coefficients of this class are solutions to problems in enumerative geometry, which are natural generalization of the linear Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces. We also show how to calculate these classes and present their basic properties.
On Sequential Coloring of Graphs and its Defining Sets
In this paper, based on the contributions of Tucker (1983) and Seb{ő} (1992), we generalize the concept of a sequential coloring of a graph to a framework in which the algorithm may use a coloring rule-base obtained from suitable forcing structures. In this regard, we introduce the {\it weak} and {\it strong sequential defining numbers} for such colorings and as the main results, after proving some basic properties, we show that these two parameters are intrinsically different and their spectra are nontrivial. Also, we consider the natural problems related to the complexity of computing such parameters and we show that in a variety of cases these problems are ${\bf NP}$-complete. We conjecture that this result does not depend on the rule-base for all nontrivial cases.

A digraph that represents reasonably a scheduling problem should be a directed acyclic graph. Here down we shall deal with special kind of graded $DAGs$ named $KoDAGs$. For their definition and first primary properties see $ [1]$, where natural join of directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. In this report we extend the notion of cobweb poset while delivering some elementary consequences of the description and observations established in $[1]$.

Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully corresponding relations of arbitrary arity so that all relations of arbitrary arity are their subrelations. Being this $chain -way$ complete if compared with kompletne $Kuratowski$ bipartite graphs their $DAG$ denotation is accompanied with the letter $K$ in front of descriptive abbreviation $oDAG$. The way to join bipartite digraphs of binary into $multi-ary$ relations is the natural join operation either on relations or their digraph representatives. This natural join operation is denoted here by $\os$ symbol deliberately referring to the direct sum $\oplus$ of adjacency matrices as it becomes the case for disjoint $di-bigraphs$.
