Pattern restricted quasi-Stirling permutations
We define a variation of Stirling permutations, called quasi-Stirling permutations, to be permutations on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ that avoid the patterns 1212 and 2121. Their study is motivated by a known relationship between Stirling permutations and increasing ordered rooted labeled trees. We construct a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the set of ordered rooted labeled trees and investigate pattern avoidance for these permutations.

Using Henriques' and Kamnitzer's cactus groups, Schützenberger's promotion and evacuation operators on standard Young tableaux can be generalised in a very natural way to operators acting on highest weight words in tensor products of crystals.
For the crystals corresponding to the vector representations of the symplectic groups, we show that Sundaram's map to perfect matchings intertwines promotion and rotation of the associated chord diagrams, and evacuation and reversal. We also exhibit a map with similar features for the crystals corresponding to the adjoint representations of the general linear groups.
We prove these results by applying van Leeuwen's generalisation of Fomin's local rules for jeu de taquin, connected to the action of the cactus groups by Lenart, and variants of Fomin's growth diagrams for the Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of permutations of length $n$ that avoid some given set of patterns of length 3. We show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after suitable scaling. In several cases, the number is asymptotically normal; this contrasts to the cases of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3 studied in earlier papers.
Pattern Avoidance of Generalized Permutations

In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.
A Generalized Cover's Problem
Generalizing a problem posed by Cover, we propose an adversarial game in which a permutation is incrementally constructed in a setting of partial information. As in the secretary problem, this permutation is exposed in stages via the successive components of its Lehmer code. Extending Cover's result, which constitutes the case $n = 2$, we establish that a random permutation of $n$ adversarially constructed real numbers can be reconstructed with better-than-random probability, provided that certain among the numbers it permutes are made visible during the process.

We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.
New Lower Bounds for Permutation Arrays Using Contraction

A permutation array $A$ is a set of permutations on a finite set $Ω$, say of size $n$. Given distinct permutations $π, σ\in Ω$, we let $hd(π, σ) = |\{ x\in Ω: π(x) \ne σ(x) \}|$, called the Hamming distance between $π$ and $σ$. Now let $hd(A) =$ min$\{ hd(π, σ): π, σ\in A \}$. For positive integers $n$ and $d$ with $d\le n$, we let $M(n,d)$ be the maximum number of permutations in any array $A$ satisfying $hd(A) \geq d$. There is an extensive literature on the function $M(n,d)$, motivated in part by suggested applications to error correcting codes for message transmission over power lines.
A basic fact is that if a permutation group $G$ is sharply $k$-transitive on a set of size $n\geq k$, then $M(n,n-k+1) = |G|$. Motivated by this we consider the permutation groups $AGL(1,q)$ and $PGL(2,q)$ acting sharply $2$-transitively on $GF(q)$ and sharply $3$-transitively on $GF(q)\cup \{\infty\}$ respectively. Applying a contraction operation to these groups, we obtain the following new lower bounds for prime powers $q$ satisfying $q\equiv 1$ (mod $3$).
1. $M(q-1,q-3)\geq (q^{2} - 1)/2$ for $q$ odd, $q\geq 7$,
2. $M(q-1,q-3)\geq (q-1)(q+2)/3$ for $q$ even, $q\geq 8$,
3. $M(q,q-3)\geq Kq^{2}\log q$ for some constant $K$ if $q$ is odd, $q\geq 13$.
These results resolve a case left open in a previous paper \cite{BLS}, where it was shown that $M(q-1, q-3) \geq q^{2} - q$ and $M(q,q-3) \geq q^{3} - q$ for all prime powers $q$ such that $q\not \equiv 1$ (mod $3$). We also obtain lower bounds for $M(n,d)$ for a finite number of exceptional pairs $n,d$, by applying this contraction operation to the sharply $4$ and $5$-transitive Mathieu groups.
The orbit algebra of a permutation group with polynomial profile is Cohen-Macaulay
Let $G$ be a group of permutations of a denumerable set $E$. The profile of $G$ is the function $φ_G$ which counts, for each $n$, the (possibly infinite) number $φ_G(n)$ of orbits of $G$ acting on the $n$-subsets of $E$. Counting functions arising this way, and their associated generating series, form a rich yet apparently strongly constrained class. In particular, Cameron conjectured in the late seventies that, whenever $φ_G(n)$ is bounded by a polynomial, it is asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. In 1985, Macpherson further asked if the orbit algebra of $G$ - a graded commutative algebra invented by Cameron and whose Hilbert function is $φ_G$ - is finitely generated. In this paper, we announce a proof of a stronger statement: the orbit algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. The generating series of the profile is a rational fraction whose numerator has positive coefficients and denominator admits a combinatorial description. The proof uses classical techniques from group actions, commutative algebra, and invariant theory; it steps towards a classification of ages of permutation groups with profile bounded by a polynomial.
On the centrosymmetric permutations in a class

A permutation is centrosymmetric if it is fixed by a half-turn rotation of its diagram. Initially motivated by a question by Alexander Woo, we investigate the question of whether the growth rate of a permutation class equals the growth rate of its even-size centrosymmetric elements. We present various examples where the latter growth rate is strictly less, but we conjecture that the reverse inequality cannot occur. We conjecture that equality holds if the class is sum closed, and we prove this conjecture in the special case where the growth rate is at most $ξ\approx 2.30522$, using results from Pantone and Vatter on growth rates less than $ξ$. We prove one direction of inequality for sum closed classes and for some geometric grid classes. We end with preliminary findings on new kinds of growth-rate thresholds that are a little bit larger than $ξ$.
Distribution of the Number of Corners in Tree--like Tableaux
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux and some of their probabilistic properties. Tree--like tableaux are in bijection with other combinatorial structures, including permutation tableaux, and have a connection to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP), an important model of an interacting particles system. In particular, in the context of tree-like tableaux, a corner corresponds to a node occupied by a particle that could jump to the right while inner corners indicate a particle with an empty node to its left. Thus, the total number of corners represents the number of nodes at which PASEP can move, i. e. the total current activity of the system. As the number of inner corners and regular corners is connected, we limit our discussion to just regular corners and show that asymptotically, the number of corners in a tableau of length $n$ is normally distributed.

We generalize the Tamari lattice by extending the notions of $231$-avoiding permutations, noncrossing set partitions, and nonnesting set partitions to parabolic quotients of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$. We show bijectively that these three objects are equinumerous. We show how to extend these constructions to parabolic quotients of any finite Coxeter group. The main ingredient is a certain aligned condition of inversion sets; a concept which can in fact be generalized to any reduced expression of any element in any (not necessarily finite) Coxeter group.
Aldous' Spectral Gap Conjecture for Normal Sets

Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group on $n$ elements, and $Σ\subseteq S_{n}$ a symmetric subset of permutations. Aldous' spectral gap conjecture, proved by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer [arXiv:0906.1238], states that if $Σ$ is a set of transpositions, then the second eigenvalue of the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}\left(S_{n},Σ\right)$ is identical to the second eigenvalue of the Schreier graph on $n$ vertices depicting the action of $S_{n}$ on $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\}$. Inspired by this seminal result, we study similar questions for other types of sets in $S_{n}$. Specifically, we consider normal sets: sets that are invariant under conjugation. Relying on character bounds due to Larsen and Shalev [2008], we show that for large enough $n$, if $Σ\subset S_{n}$ is a full conjugacy class, then the second eigenvalue of $\mathrm{Cay}\left(S_{n},Σ\right)$ is roughly identical to the second eigenvalue of the Schreier graph depicting the action of $S_{n}$ on ordered $4$-tuples of elements from $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\}$. We further show that this type of result does not hold when $Σ$ is an arbitrary normal set, but a slightly weaker one does hold. We state a conjecture in the same spirit regarding an arbitrary symmetric set $Σ\subset S_{n}$, which yields surprisingly strong consequences.

We provide a cyclic permutation analogue of the Erd\H os-Szekeres theorem. In particular, we show that every cyclic permutation of length $(k-1)(\ell-1)+2$ has either an increasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $k+1$ or a decreasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $\ell+1$, and show that the result is tight. We also characterize all maximum-length cyclic permutations that do not have an increasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $k+1$ or a decreasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $\ell+1$.
The $μ$-permanent revisited

Let $A=(a_{ij})$ be an $n$-by-$n$ matrix. For any real number $μ$, we define the polynomial $$P_μ(A)=\sum_{σ\in S_n} a_{1σ(1)}\cdots a_{nσ(n)}\,μ^{\ell(σ)}\; ,$$ as the $μ$-permanent of $A$, where $\ell(σ)$ is the number of inversions of the permutation $σ$ in the symmetric group $S_n$. In this note, we review several less known results of the $μ$-permanent, recalling some of its interesting properties. Some determinantal conjectures are considered and extended to that polynomial. A correction to a previous note is presented as well.

We study shifted standard Young tableaux (SYT). The limiting surface of uniformly random shifted SYT of staircase shape is determined, with the integers in the SYT as heights. This implies via properties of the Edelman-Greene bijection results about random 132-avoiding sorting networks, including limit shapes for trajectories and intermediate permutations. Moreover, the expected number of adjacencies in SYT is considered. It is shown that on average each row and each column of a shifted SYT of staircase shape contains precisely one adjacency.

The set of factorizations of permutations in to $m$ transpositions of some symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n$ is naturally in bijection with the set of graphs of order $n$ and size $m$ with both edges and vertices labeled. We define a notion of duality (the \emph{mind-body duality}) for factorizations and such labeled graphs and interpret it in terms of Properly Embedded Graphs, a class of graphs embedded in a bounded compact oriented surface with all the vertices lying in the boundary, and show a close connection of this duality with the Hurwitz action of the Braid Group. Connections with the theory of Cellularly Embedded Graphs are highlighted and hints of possible applications are given. In this paper we focus on developing the necessary theory, leaving specific applications and further developments for future projects.
Permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$
We consider four classes of polynomials over the fields $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$, $q=p^h$, $p>3$, $f_1(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^2-q+1}+Bx$, $f_2(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^3-q^2+q}+Bx$, $f_3(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^2}-Bx$, $f_4(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q}-Bx$, where $A,B \in \mathbb{F}_q$. We determine conditions on the pairs $(A,B)$ and we give lower bounds on the number of pairs $(A,B)$ for which these polynomials permute $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$.

Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.

A binary $[98280, 24, 47104]_2$ projective two-weight code related to the sporadic simple group ${\rm Co}_1$ of Conway is constructed as a faithful and absolutely irreducible submodule of the permutation module induced by the primitive action of ${\rm Co}_1$ on the cosets of ${\rm Co}_2$. The dual code of this code is a uniformly packed $[98280, 98256,3]_2$ code. The geometric significance of the codewords of the code can be traced to the vectors in the Leech lattice, thus revealing that the stabilizer of any non-zero weight codeword in the code is a maximal subgroup of ${\rm Co}_1$. Similarly, the stabilizer of the codewords of minimum weight in the dual code is a maximal subgroup of ${\rm Co}_1$. As by-product, a new strongly regular graph on 16777216 vertices and valency 98280 is constructed using the codewords of the code.
