Keyed hash function from large girth expander graphs
In this paper we present an algorithm to compute keyed hash function (message authentication code MAC). Our approach uses a family of expander graphs of large girth denoted $D(n,q)$, where $n$ is a natural number bigger than one and $q$ is a prime power. Expander graphs are known to have excellent expansion properties and thus they also have very good mixing properties. All requirements for a good MAC are satisfied in our method and a discussion about collisions and preimage resistance is also part of this work. The outputs closely approximate the uniform distribution and the results we get are indistinguishable from random sequences of bits. Exact formulas for timing are given in term of number of operations per bit of input. Based on the tests, our method for implementing DMAC shows good efficiency in comparison to other techniques. 4 operations per bit of input can be achieved. The algorithm is very flexible and it works with messages of any length. Many existing algorithms output a fixed length tag, while our constructions allow generation of an arbitrary length output, which is a big advantage.

Random graphs with a fixed maximum degree
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 34 (2020), no. 1, 53-61 • Search Publication
We study the component structure of the random graph $G=G_{n,m,d}$. Here $d=O(1)$ and $G$ is sampled uniformly from ${\mathcal G}_{n,m,d}$, the set of graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $m$ edges and maximum degree at most $d$. If $m=μn/2$ then we establish a threshold value $μ_\star$ such that if $μ<μ_\star$ then w.h.p. the maximum component size is $O(\log n)$. If $μ>μ_\star$ then w.h.p. there is a unique giant component of order $n$ and the remaining components have size $O( \log n)$.

On a perfect matching in a random bipartite digraph with average out-degree below two
Existence of a perfect matching in a random bipartite digraph with bipartition $(V_1, V_2)$, $|V_i|=n$, is studied. The graph is generated in two rounds of random selections of a potential matching partner such that the average number of selections made by each vertex overall is below $2$. More precisely, in the first round each vertex chooses a potential mate uniformly at random, and independently of all vertices. Given a fixed integer $m$, a vertex is classified as unpopular if it has been chosen by at most $m$ vertices from the other side. Each unpopular vertex makes yet another uniform/independent selection of a potential mate. The expected number of selections made by a generic vertex $v$, i.e. its out-degree, is asymptotic to $1+\Bbb P(\text{Poisson}(1)\le m)\in (1,2)$. Aided by Matlab software, we prove that for $m=1$, whence for all $m\ge 1$, the resulting bipartite graph has a perfect matching a.a.s. (asymptotically almost surely). On the other hand, for $m=0$ a.a.s. a perfect matching does not exist, and the graph consists of a single giant component of size $2n -O(n^{1/2+o(1)})$ and possibly some components of size $O(\log n)$. This is a thorough revision of the joint paper (JCT(B) 88 (2003), 1-16) by the first author and the third author.
Dirac's theorem for random regular graphs
We prove a `resilience' version of Dirac's theorem in the setting of random regular graphs. More precisely, we show that, whenever $d$ is sufficiently large compared to $\varepsilon>0$, a.a.s. the following holds: let $G'$ be any subgraph of the random $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph $G_{n,d}$ with minimum degree at least $(1/2+\varepsilon)d$. Then $G'$ is Hamiltonian. This proves a conjecture of Ben-Shimon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Our result is best possible: firstly, the condition that $d$ is large cannot be omitted, and secondly, the minimum degree bound cannot be improved.

Collapsibility of Random Clique Complexes
We prove a sufficient condition for a finite clique complex to collapse to a $k$-dimensional complex, and use this to exhibit thresholds for $(k+1)$-collapsibility in a sparse random clique complex. In particular, if every strongly connected, pure $(k+1)$-dimensional subcomplex of a clique complex $X$ has a vertex of degree at most $2k+1$, then $X$ is $(k+1)$-collapsible. In the random model $X(n,p)$ of clique complexes of an Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, we then show that for any fixed $k\geq 0$, if $p=n^{-α}$ for fixed $1/(k+1) < α< 1/k$, then a clique complex $X\overset{dist}{=} X(n,p)$ is $(k+1)$-collapsible with high probability.

Two generalizations of Markov blankets
In a probabilistic graphical model on a set of variables $V$, the Markov blanket of a random vector $B$ is the minimal set of variables conditioned to which $B$ is independent from the remaining of the variables $V \backslash B$. We generalize Markov blankets to study how a set $C$ of variables of interest depends on~$B$. Doing that, we must choose if we authorize vertices of $C$ or vertices of $V \backslash C$ in the blanket. We therefore introduce two generalizations. The Markov blanket of $B$ in $C$ is the minimal subset of $C$ conditionally to which $B$ and $C$ are independent. It is naturally interpreted as the inner boundary through which $C$ depends on $B$, and finds applications in feature selection. The Markov blanket of $B$ in the direction of $C$ is the nearest set to $B$ among the minimal sets conditionally to which ones $B$ and $C$ are independent, and finds applications in causality. It is the outer boundary of $B$ in the direction of $C$. We provide algorithms to compute them that are not slower than the usual algorithms for finding a d-separator in a directed graphical model. All our definitions and algorithms are provided for directed and undirected graphical models.

Good weights for the Erdős discrepancy problem
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2020:8, 23 pp • Search Publication
The Erdős discrepancy problem, now a theorem by T. Tao, asks whether every sequence with values plus or minus one has unbounded discrepancy along all homogeneous arithmetic progressions. We establish weighted variants of this problem, for weights given either by structured sequences that enjoy some irrationality features, or certain random sequences. As an intermediate result, we establish unboundedness of weighted sums of bounded multiplicative functions and products of shifts of such functions. A key ingredient in our analysis for the structured weights, is a structural result for measure preserving systems naturally associated with bounded multiplicative functions that was recently obtained in joint work with B. Host.

Ramsey-type problems in orientations of graphs
Given an acyclic oriented graph $\vec{H}$ and a graph $G$, we write $G \to \vec{H}$ if every orientation of $G$ has an oriented copy of $\vec{H}$. We define $\vec{R}(\vec{H})$ as the smallest number $n$ such that there exists a graph $G$ satisfying $G \to \vec{H}$. Denoting by $R(H)$ the classical Ramsey number of a graph $H$, we show that $\vec{R}(\vec{H}) \leq 2R(H)^{c \log^2 h}$ for every acyclic oriented graph $\vec{H}$ with $h$ vertices, where $H$ is its underlying undirected graph. We also study the threshold function for the event $\{G(n,p) \to \vec{H}\}$ in the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. Finally, we consider the isometric case, in which we require that, for every two vertices $x, y \in V(\vec{H})$ and their respective copies $x', y'$ in $\vec{G}$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is equal to the distance between $x'$ and $y'$. We prove an upper bound for the isometric Ramsey number of an acyclic orientation of the cycle, applying the hypergraph container lemma in random graphs.
The Number of Convex Polyominoes with Given Height and Width
We give a new combinatorial proof for the number of convex polyominoes whose minimum enclosing rectangle has given dimensions. We also count the subclass of these polyominoes that contain the lower left corner of the enclosing rectangle (directed polyominoes). We indicate how to sample random polyominoes in these classes. As a side result, we calculate the first and second moments of the number of common points of two monotone lattice paths between two given points.
Upperbounds on the probability of finding marked connected components using quantum walks
Published in Quantum Information Processing 20, 6 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Quantum walk search may exhibit phenomena beyond the intuition from a conventional random walk theory. One of such examples is exceptional configuration phenomenon -- it appears that it may be much harder to find any of two or more marked vertices, that if only one of them is marked. In this paper, we analyze the probability of finding any of marked vertices in such scenarios and prove upper bounds for various sets of marked vertices. We apply the upper bounds to large collection of graphs and show that the quantum search may be slow even when taking real-world networks.

Super-logarithmic cliques in dense inhomogeneous random graphs
In the theory of dense graph limits, a graphon is a symmetric measurable function $W:[0,1]^2\to [0,1]$. Each graphon gives rise naturally to a random graph distribution, denoted $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$, that can be viewed as a generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph. Recently, Doležal, Hladký, and Máthé gave an asymptotic formula of order $\log n$ for the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ when $W$ is bounded away from 0 and 1. We show that if $W$ is allowed to approach 1 at a finite number of points, and displays a moderate rate of growth near these points, then the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ will be $Θ(\sqrt{n})$ almost surely. We also give a family of examples with clique number $Θ(n^α)$ for any $α\in(0,1)$, and some conditions under which the clique number of $\mathbb{G}(n,W)$ will be $o(\sqrt{n})$, $ω(\sqrt{n}),$ or $Ω(n^α)$ for $α\in(0,1)$.

Exact cubature rules for symmetric functions
Published in Math. Comp. 88 (2019), no. 317, 1229-1249 • View PublicationBIB
We employ a multivariate extension of the Gauss quadrature formula, originally due to Berens, Schmid and Xu [BSX95], so as to derive cubature rules for the integration of symmetric functions over hypercubes (or infinite limiting degenerations thereof) with respect to the densities of unitary random matrix ensembles. Our main application concerns the explicit implementation of a class of cubature rules associated with the Bernstein-Szegö polynomials, which permit the exact integration of symmetric rational functions with prescribed poles at coordinate hyperplanes against unitary circular Jacobi distributions stemming from the Haar measures on the symplectic and the orthogonal groups.

Pairwise optimal coupling of multiple random variables
We generalize the optimal coupling theorem to multiple random variables: Given a collection of random variables, it is possible to couple all of them so that any two differ with probability comparable to the total-variation distance between them. In a number of cases we show that the disagreement probability we achieve is the best possible. The proofs of sharpness rely on new results in extremal combinatorics, which may be of independent interest.

Girth, words and diameter
We study the girth of Cayley graphs of finite classical groups G on random sets of generators. Our main tool is an essentially best possible bound we obtain on the probability that a given word w takes the value 1 when evaluated in G in terms of the length of w, which has additional applications. We also study the girth of random directed Cayley graphs of symmetric groups, and the relation between the girth and the diameter of random Cayley graphs of finite simple groups.

The Construction of Two Kinds of Bijections in Simple Random Walk Paths
It is known that for the 2n-step symmetric simple random walk on Z, two events have the same probability if and only if their sets of paths have the same cardinality. In this article, we construct two kinds of bijections between sets of paths with the same cardinality. The construction is natural and simple. It can be easily realized through programming. More importantly, this construction opens a door to prove that two events in the 2n-step symmetric simple random walk on Z have the same probability and some further related results.

Coalescence under Preimage Constraints
The primary goal of this document is to record the asymptotic effects that preimage constraints impose upon the sizes of the iterated images of a random function. Specifically, given a subset $\mathcal{P}\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ and a finite set $S$ of size $n$, choose a function uniformly from the set of functions $f:S\rightarrow S$ that satisfy the condition that $|f^{-1}(x)|\in\mathcal{P}$ for each $x\in S$, and ask what $|f^k(S)|$ looks like as $n$ goes to infinity. The robust theory of singularity analysis allows one to completely answer this question if one accepts that $0\in\mathcal{P}$, that $\mathcal{P}$ contains an element bigger than 1, and that $\gcd(\mathcal{P})=1$; only the third of these conditions is a meaningful restriction. The secondary goal of this paper is to record much of the background necessary to achieve the primary goal.
Hypergeometric identities arising from the elephant random walk
A probabilistic approach is provided to establish new hypergeometric identities. It is based on the calculation of moments of the limiting distribution of the position of the elephant random walk in the superdiffusive regime.

Random graphs induced by Catalan pairs
We consider Catalan-pair graphs, a family of graphs that can be viewed as representing certain interactions between pairs of objects which are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this paper we study random Catalan-pair graphs and deduce various properties of these random graphs. In particular, we asymptotically determine the expected number of edges and isolated vertices, and more generally we determine the expected number of (induced) subgraphs isomorphic to a given connected graph.
New edge asymptotics of skew Young diagrams via free boundaries
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 82B.34 (2019), Proceedings of the 31st Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (Ljubljana) • Search Publication
We study edge asymptotics of poissonized Plancherel-type measures on skew Young diagrams (integer partitions). These measures can be seen as generalizations of those studied by Baik--Deift--Johansson and Baik--Rains in resolving Ulam's problem on longest increasing subsequences of random permutations and the last passage percolation (corner growth) discrete versions thereof. Moreover they interpolate between said measures and the uniform measure on partitions. In the new KPZ-like 1/3 exponent edge scaling limit with logarithmic corrections, we find new probability distributions generalizing the classical Tracy--Widom GUE, GOE and GSE distributions from the theory of random matrices.

Nucleation during phase transitions in random networks
We analyze the 3-parameter family of random networks which are uniform on networks with fixed number of edges, triangles, and nodes (between 33 and 66). We find precursors of phase transitions which are known to be present in the asymptotic node regime as the edge and triangle numbers are varied, and focus on one of the discontinuous ones. By use of a natural edge flip dynamics we determine nucleation barriers as a random network crosses the transition, in analogy to the process a material undergoes when frozen or melted, and characterize some of the stochastic properties of the network nucleation.
