Simple closed form Hankel transforms based on the central coefficients of certain Pascal-like triangles
We study the Hankel transforms of sequences related to the central coefficients of a family of Pascal-like triangles. The mechanism of Riordan arrays is used to elucidate the structure of these transforms.
Non-Holonomicity of Sequences Defined via Elementary Functions

We present a new method for proving non-holonomicity of sequences, which is based on results about the number of zeros of elementary and of analytic functions. Our approach is applicable to sequences that are defined as the values of an elementary function at positive integral arguments. We generalize several recent results; e.g., non-holonomicity of the logarithmic sequence is extended to rational functions involving $\log n$. Moreover, we show that the sequence that arises from evaluating the Riemann zeta function at odd integers is not holonomic.
A Characterization of the Degree Sequences of 2-Trees

A graph G is a 2-tree if G=K_3, or G has a vertex v of degree 2, whose neighbours are adjacent, and Gǐs a 2-tree. A characterization of the degree sequences of 2-trees is given. This characterization yields a linear-time algorithm for recognizing and realizing degree sequences of 2-trees.

Idempotents and Nilpotents Modulo n
We study asymptotic properties of periods and transient phases associated with modular power sequences. The latter are simple; the former are vaguely related to the reciprocal sum of square-free integer kernels.

Filtering bases and cohomology of nilpotent subalgebras of Witt and $\widetilde{sl}_2$ Lie algebras

We study the cohomology with trivial coefficients of Lie algebras L_k of the polynomial vector fields on the line with zero $k$-jet, (k>=1), and the cohomology of the similar subalgebras {L}_k of the polynomial loops algebra $\widetilde{sl}_2$. In both cases we construct the special bases (filtering bases) in the external complexes of these algebras. A spectral sequence based on this construction allows to completely find the cohomology of L_k and {L}_k. We also apply the filtering bases to find the spectral resolution of the Laplace operators for algebras L_1 and L_0, and obtain explicit formulas for the representing cycles of homologies for algebras L_k and {L}_k by means of the Schur polynomials.

Degree-k linear recursions mod(p) and number fields

Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$. On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be related to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period are shown to characterize ramification of primes in an extension field. On the other hand, the structure of the semilocal rings associated with the number field is shown to be completely determined by Schur-hook polynomials. The Hankel Transform of the Sum of Consecutive Generalized Catalan Numbers
We discuss the properties of the Hankel transformation of a sequence whose elements are the sums of consecutive generalized Catalan numbers and find their values in the closed form.

A note on some binomial sums

Modifying an idea of E. Brietzke we give simple proofs for the recurrence relations of some sequences of binomial sums which have previously been obtained by other more complicated methods.

Long $n$-zero-free sequences in finite cyclic groups
A sequence in the additive group ${\mathbb Z}_n$ of integers modulo $n$ is called $n$-zero-free if it does not contain subsequences with length $n$ and sum zero. The article characterizes the $n$-zero-free sequences in ${\mathbb Z}_n$ of length greater than $3n/2-1$. The structure of these sequences is completely determined, which generalizes a number of previously known facts. The characterization cannot be extended in the same form to shorter sequence lengths. Consequences of the main result are best possible lower bounds for the maximum multiplicity of a term in an $n$-zero-free sequence of any given length greater than $3n/2-1$ in ${\mathbb Z}_n$, and also for the combined multiplicity of the two most repeated terms. Yet another application is finding the values in a certain range of a function related to the classic theorem of Erdős, Ginzburg and Ziv.

Pattern Avoidance in Set Partitions
The study of patterns in permutations in a very active area of current research. Klazar defined and studied an analogous notion of pattern for set partitions. We continue this work, finding exact formulas for the number of set partitions which avoid certain specific patterns. In particular, we enumerate and characterize those partitions avoiding any partition of a 3-element set. This allows us to conclude that the corresponding sequences are P-recursive. Finally, we define a second notion of pattern in a set partition, based on its restricted growth function. Related results are obtained for this new definition.

Increasing and Decreasing Sequences in Fillings of Moon Polyominoes

We present an adaptation of jeu de taquin and promotion for arbitrary fillings of moon polyominoes. Using this construction we show various symmetry properties of such fillings taking into account the lengths of longest increasing and decreasing chains. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jakob Jonsson. We also relate our construction to the one recently employed by Christian Krattenthaler, thus generalising his results.

Linear quantum addition rules

The quantum integer $[n]_q$ is the polynomial $1 + q + q^2 + ... + q^{n-1}.$ Two sequences of polynomials $\mathcal{U} = \{u_n(q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ and $\mathcal{V} = \{v_n(q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ define a {\em linear addition rule} $\oplus$ on a sequence $\mathcal{F} = \{f_n(q)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ by $f_m(q)\oplus f_n(q) = u_n(q)f_m(q) + v_m(q)f_n(q).$ This is called a {\em quantum addition rule} if $[m]_q \oplus [n]_q = [m+n]_q$ for all positive integers $m$ and $n$. In this paper all linear quantum addition rules are determined, and all solutions of the corresponding functional equations $f_m(q)\oplus f_n(q) = f_{m+n}(q)$ are computed.
Decomposing sequences into monotonic subsequences
The function f:X -> Y is called k-monotonically increasing if there is a partition X = X_1 U ... U X_k such that f|X_i : X_i -> Y is monotonically increasing for i=1,...,k. It is proved that a one-to-one function f:N -> N is k-monotonically increasing if and only if every set of k+1 positive integers contains two integers x,x' with x < x' such that f(x) <= f(x'). The function f:X \to Y is called k-monotonic if there is a partition X = X_1 U ... U X_k such that f|X_i : X_i -> Y is monotonically increasing or monotonically decreasing for i=1,...,k. It is also proved that there does not exist a k-monotonic function from N onto Q.

An Extremal Problem On Potentially $K_{r+1}-(kP_2\bigcup tK_2)$-graphic Sequences

A sequence $S$ is potentially $K_{m}-H$-graphical if it has a realization containing a $K_{m}-H$ as a subgraph. Let $σ(K_{m}-H, n)$ denote the smallest degree sum such that every $n$-term graphical sequence $S$ with $σ(S)\geq σ(K_{m}-H, n)$ is potentially $K_{m}-H$-graphical. In this paper, we determine $σ(K_{r+1}-(kP_2\bigcup tK_2), n)$ for $n\geq 4r+10, r+1 \geq 3k+2t, k+t \geq 2,k \geq 1, t \geq 0$ .

A new random mapping model
We introduce a new random mapping model, $T_n^{\hat D}$, which maps the set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ into itself.The random mapping $T_n^{\hat D}$ is constructed using a collection of exchangeable random variables $\hat{D}_1, ....,\hat{D}_n$ which satisfy $\sum_{i=1}^n\hat{D}_i=n$. In the random digraph,$G_n^{\hat D}$, which represents the mapping $T_n^{\hat D}$, the in-degree sequence for the vertices is given by the variables $\hat{D}_1, \hat{D}_2, ..., \hat{D}_n$, and, in some sense,$G_n^{\hat D}$ can be viewed as an analogue of the general independent degree models from random graph theory. We show that the distribution of the number of cyclic points, the number of components,and the size of a typical component can be expressed in terms of expectations of various functions of $\hat{D}_1, \hat{D}_2, ..., \hat{D}_n$. We also consider two special examples of $T_n^{\hat D}$ which correspond to random mappings with preferential and anti-preferential attachment, respectively, and determine, for these examples, exact and asymptotic distributions for the statistics mentioned above.

Log-balanced combinatorial sequences

We consider log-convex sequences that satisfy an additional constraint imposed on their rate of growth. We call such sequences log-balanced. It is shown that all such sequences satisfy a pair of double inequalities. Sufficient conditions for log-balancedness are given for the case when the sequence satisfies a two- (or more-) term linear recurrence. It is shown that many combinatorially interesting sequences belong to this class, and, as a consequence, that the above-mentioned double inequalities are valid for all of them.

Calculus proofs of some combinatorial inequalities

Using calculus we show how to prove some combinatorial inequalities of the type log-concavity or log-convexity. It is shown by this method that binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds are log-concave, and that Motzkin numbers and secondary structure numbers of rank 1 are log-convex. In fact, we prove via calculus a much stronger result that a natural continuous ``patchwork'' (i.e. corresponding dynamical systems) of Motzkin numbers and secondary structures recursions are increasing functions. We indicate how to prove asymptotically the log-convexity for general secondary structures. Our method also applies to show that sequences of values of some orthogonal polynomials, and in particular the sequence of central Delannoy numbers, are log-convex.

Logarithmic behavior of some combinatorial sequences
Two general methods for establishing the logarithmic behavior of recursively defined sequences of real numbers are presented. One is the interlacing method, and the other one is based on calculus. Both methods are used to prove logarithmic behavior of some combinatorially relevant sequences, such as Motzkin and Schröder numbers, sequences of values of some classic orthogonal polynomials, and many others. The calculus method extends also to two- (or more-) indexed sequences.

Let $K_k$, $C_k$, $T_k$, and $P_{k}$ denote a complete graph on $k$ vertices, a cycle on $k$ vertices, a tree on $k+1$ vertices, and a path on $k+1$ vertices, respectively. Let $K_{m}-H$ be the graph obtained from $K_{m}$ by removing the edges set $E(H)$ of the graph $H$ ($H$ is a subgraph of $K_{m}$). A sequence $S$ is potentially $K_{m}-H$-graphical if it has a realization containing a $K_{m}-H$ as a subgraph. Let $σ(K_{m}-H, n)$ denote the smallest degree sum such that every $n$-term graphical sequence $S$ with $σ(S)\geq σ(K_{m}-H, n)$ is potentially $K_{m}-H$-graphical. In this paper, we determine the values of $σ(K_{r+1}-H, n)$ for $n\geq 4r+10, r\geq 3, r+1 \geq k \geq 4$ where $H$ is a graph on $k$ vertices which contains a tree on 4 vertices but not contains a cycle on 3 vertices. We also determine the values of $σ(K_{r+1}-P_2, n)$ for $n\geq 4r+8, r\geq 3$. There are a number of graphs on $k$ vertices which containing a tree on 4 vertices but not containing a cycle on 3 vertices (for example, the cycle on $k$ vertices, the tree on $k$ vertices, and the complete 2-partite graph on $k$ vertices, etc).

Hankel Determinants for Some Common Lattice Paths

For a single value of $\ell$, let $f(n,\ell)$ denote the number of lattice paths that use the steps $(1,1)$, $(1,-1)$, and $(\ell,0)$, that run from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$, and that never run below the horizontal axis. Equivalently, $f(n,\ell)$ satisfies the quadratic functional equation $F(x) = \sum_{n\ge 0}f(n,\ell) x^n = 1+x^{\ell}F(x)+x^2F(x)^2.$ Let $H_n$ denote the $n$ by $n$ Hankel matrix, defined so that $[H_n]_{i,j} = f(i+j-2,\ell)$. Here we investigate the values of such determinants where $\ell = 0,1,2,3$. For $\ell = 0,1,2$ we are able to employ the Gessel-Viennot-Lindström method. For the case $\ell=3$, the sequence of determinants forms a sequence of period 14, namely, $$ (\det(H_n))_{n \ge 1} = (1,1,0,0,-1,-1,-1,-1,-1,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,0,0,-1,-1,-1,...)$$ For this case we are able to use the continued fractions method recently introduced by Gessel and Xin. We also apply this technique to evaluate Hankel determinants for other generating functions satisfying a certain type of quadratic functional equation.
