Counting Arithmetical Structures on Paths and Cycles
Published in Discrete Math. 341 (2018), no. 10, 2949-2963 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite, simple, connected graph. An arithmetical structure on $G$ is a pair of positive integer vectors $\mathbf{d},\mathbf{r}$ such that $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)\mathbf{r}=0$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. We investigate the combinatorics of arithmetical structures on path and cycle graphs, as well as the associated critical groups (the cokernels of the matrices $(\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{d})-A)$). For paths, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the Catalan numbers, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to ballot sequences. For cycles, we prove that arithmetical structures are enumerated by the binomial coefficients $\binom{2n-1}{n-1}$, and we obtain refined enumeration results related to multisets. In addition, we determine the critical groups for all arithmetical structures on paths and cycles.
New inequalities involving the Geometric-Arithmetic index
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph and $d_i$ be the degree of its $i$th vertex. In a recent paper [J. Math. Chem. 46 (2009) 1369-1376] the first geometric-arithmetic index of a graph $G$ was defined as $$GA_1=\sum_{ij\in E}\frac{2 \sqrt{d_i d_j}}{d_i + d_j}.$$ This graph invariant is useful for chemical proposes. The main use of $GA_1$ is for designing so-called quantitative structure-activity relations and quantitative structure-property relations. In this paper we obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize the graphs which make the inequalities tight. In particular, we improve some known results, generalize other, and we relate $GA_1$ to other well-known topological indices.

Geometry of the vacant set left by random walk on random graphs, Wright's constants, and critical random graphs with prescribed degrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an explicit algorithm for sampling a uniform simple connected random graph with a given degree sequence. By products of this central result include: (i) continuum scaling limits of uniform simple connected graphs with given degree sequence and asymptotics for the number of simple connected graphs with given degree sequence under some regularity conditions, and (ii) scaling limits for the metric space structure of the maximal components in the critical regime of both the configuration model and the uniform simple random graph model with prescribed degree sequence under finite third moment assumption on the degree sequence. As a substantive application we answer a question raised by Cerny and Teixeira by obtaining the metric space scaling limit of maximal components in the vacant set left by random walks on random regular graphs.
The Wiener Index and the Hosoya Polynomial of the Jahangir Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a simple connected graph having vertex set V and edge set E. The vertex-set and edge-set of G denoted by V(G) and E(G), respectively. The length of the smallest path between two vertices is called the distance. Mathematical chemistry is the area of research engaged in new application of mathematics in chemistry. In mathematics chemistry, we have many topological indices for any molecular graph, that they are invariant on the graph automorphism. In this research paper, we computing the Wiener index and the Hosoya polynomial of the Jahangir graphs $J_5,m$ for all integer number $m \geq 3$.

Domination number in block designs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph. A set of vertices $S\subseteq V$ is said to be a dominating set if for any vertex in $V\setminus S$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $S$. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality among all such sets. In this paper, we obtain some results on the domination number of the incidence graphs of combinatorial designs. In particular, we prove a conjecture and disprove another conjecture in a recent paper by Goldberg, Rajendraprasad and Mathew. We also prove a third conjecture by the same authors for block-transitive symmetric designs.

On the second smallest and the largest normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with order $n$. Let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$. Let $λ_{k}(G)$ be the $k$-th smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. Denote $ρ(A)$ the spectral radius of the matrix $A$. In this paper, we study the behaviors of $λ_{2}(G)$ and $ρ(\mathcal{L}(G))$ when the graph is perturbed by three operations.

Critical window for connectivity in the Configuration Model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We identify the asymptotic probability of a configuration model $\mathrm{CM}_n(\boldsymbol{d})$ to produce a connected graph within its critical window for connectivity that is identified by the number of vertices of degree 1 and 2, as well as the expected degree. In this window, the probability that the graph is connected converges to a non-trivial value, and the size of the complement of the giant component weakly converges to a finite random variable. Under a finite second moment condition we also derive the asymptotics of the connectivity probability conditioned on simplicity, from which the asymptotic number of simple connected graphs with a prescribed degree sequence follows.

Nullspace embeddings for outerplanar graphs
Published in in: Journey Through Discrete Mathematics. A Tribute to Jiri Matousek, Springer (2017), 571-591 • Search Publication
We study relations between geometric embeddings of graphs and the spectrum of associated matrices, focusing on outerplanar embeddings of graphs. For a simple connected graph $G=(V,E)$, we define a "good" $G$-matrix as a $V\times V$ matrix with negative entries corresponding to adjacent nodes, zero entries corresponding to distinct nonadjacent nodes, and exactly one negative eigenvalue. We give an algorithmic proof of the fact that it $G$ is a 2-connected graph, then either the nullspace representation defined by any "good" $G$-matrix with corank 2 is an outerplanar embedding of $G$, or else there exists a "good" $G$-matrix with corank 3.

Mixing time and eigenvalues of the abelian sandpile Markov chain
Published • View PublicationBIB
The abelian sandpile model defines a Markov chain whose states are integer-valued functions on the vertices of a simple connected graph $G$. By viewing this chain as a (nonreversible) random walk on an abelian group, we give a formula for its eigenvalues and eigenvectors in terms of `multiplicative harmonic functions' on the vertices of $G$. We show that the spectral gap of the sandpile chain is within a constant factor of the length of the shortest non-integer vector in the dual Laplacian lattice, while the mixing time is at most a constant times the smoothing parameter of the Laplacian lattice. We find a surprising inverse relationship between the spectral gap of the sandpile chain and that of simple random walk on $G$: If the latter has a sufficiently large spectral gap, then the former has a small gap! In the case where $G$ is the complete graph on $n$ vertices, we show that the sandpile chain exhibits cutoff at time $\frac{1}{4π^{2}}n^{3}\log n$.
The largest $H$-eigenvalue and spectral radius of Laplacian tensor of non-odd-bipartite generalized power hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2016, 504: 487-502 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph or hypergraph, and let $A(G),L(G),Q(G)$ be the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of $G$ respectively. The largest $H$-eigenvalues (resp., the spectral radii) of $L(G),Q(G)$ are denoted respectively by $λ_{\max}^L(G), λ_{\max}^Q(G)$ (resp., $ρ^L(G), ρ^Q(G)$). For a connected non-bipartite simple graph $G$, $λ_{\max}^L(G)=ρ^L(G) < ρ^Q(G)$. But this does not hold for non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We will investigate this problem by considering a class of generalized power hypergraphs $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$, which are constructed from simple connected graphs $G$ by blowing up each vertex of $G$ into a $\frac{k}{2}$-set and preserving the adjacency of vertices. Suppose that $G$ is non-bipartite, or equivalently $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite. We get the following spectral properties: (1) $ρ^L(G^{k,{k \over 2}}) =ρ^Q(G^{k,{k \over 2}})$ if and only if $k$ is a multiple of $4$; in this case $λ_{\max}^L(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})<ρ^L(G^{k,{k \over 2}})$. (2) If $k\equiv 2 (\!\!\!\mod 4)$, then for sufficiently large $k$, $λ_{\max}^L(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})<ρ^L(G^{k,{k \over 2}})$. Motivated by the study of hypergraphs $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$, for a connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraph $G$, we give a characterization of $L(G)$ and $Q(G)$ having the same spectra or the spectrum of $A(G)$ being symmetric with respect to the origin, that is, $L(G)$ and $Q(G)$, or $A(G)$ and $-A(G)$ are similar via a complex (necessarily non-real) diagonal matrix with modular-$1$ diagonal entries. So we give an answer to a question raised by Shao et al., that is, for a non-odd-bipartite hypergraph $G$, that $L(G)$ and $Q(G)$ have the same spectra can not imply they have the same $H$-spectra.

The normalized Laplacian spectrum of subdivisions of a graph
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2016, 286: 250-256 • View PublicationBIB
Determining and analyzing the spectra of graphs is an important and exciting research topic in theoretical computer science. The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its structural properties and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, in particular those related to random walks. In this paper, we give the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated subdivisions of simple connected graphs. As an example of application of these results we find the exact values of their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.

Extremal Graph Theory for Degree Sequences
This paper surveys some recent results and progress on the extremal prob- lems in a given set consisting of all simple connected graphs with the same graphic degree sequence. In particular, we study and characterize the extremal graphs having the maximum (or minimum) values of graph invariants such as (Laplacian, p-Laplacian, signless Laplacian) spectral radius, the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, the Wiener index, the Harary index, the number of subtrees and the chromatic number etc, in given sets with the same tree, unicyclic, graphic degree sequences. Moreover, some conjectures are included.

On the roots of hypergraph chromatic polynomials
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected graph with chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$. Sokal \cite{sokal} proved that the roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ are bounded in absolute value by $KD$ where, $D$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $7< K < 8$ is a constant. In this paper we generalize this result to uniform hypergraphs. To prove our results we will use the theory of the bounded exponential type graph polynomials.

The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its topological and structural characteristics and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, specifically in relation to random walks. In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. As an application, we also find closed-forms for their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.

On the extremal total reciprocal edge-eccentricity of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
The total reciprocal edge-eccentricity is a novel graph invariant with vast potential in structure activity/property relationships. This graph invariant displays high discriminating power with respect to both biological activity and physical properties. If $G=(V_G,E_G)$ is a simple connected graph, then the total reciprocal edge-eccentricity (REE) of $G$ is defined as $ξ^{ee}(G)=\sum_{uv\in E_G}(1/\varepsilon_G(u)+1/\varepsilon_G(v))$, where $\varepsilon_G(v)$ is the eccentricity of the vertex $v$. In this paper we first introduced four edge-grafting transformations to study the mathematical properties of the reciprocal edge-eccentricity of $G$. Using these elegant mathematical properties, we characterize the extremal graphs among $n$-vertex trees with given graphic parameters, such as pendants, matching number, domination number, diameter, vertex bipartition, et al. Some sharp bounds on the reciprocal edge-eccentricity of trees are determined.

On the Curling Number of Certain Graphs
In this paper, we introduce the concept of curling subsequence of simple, finite and connected graphs. A curling subsequence is a maximal subsequence $C$ of the degree sequence of a simple connected graph $G$ for which the curling number $cn(G)$ corresponds to the curling number of the degree sequence per se and hence we call it the curling number of the graph $G$. A maximal degree subsequence with equal entries is called an identity subsequence. The number of identity curling subsequences in a simple connected graph $G$ is denoted $ic(G).$ We show that the curling number conjecture holds for the degree sequence of a simple connected graph $G$ on $n \geq 1$ vertices. We also introduce the notion of the compound curling number of a simple connected graph $G$ and then initiate a study on the curling number of certain standard graphs like Jaco graphs and set-graphs.

On the second largest distance eigenvalue of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G.$ Suppose that $λ_{1}(D(G))\geqλ_{2}(D(G))\geq\cdots\geqλ_{n}(D(G))$ are the distance spectrum of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $D$-spectrum if with respect to the distance matrix $D(G)$, any graph with the same spectrum as $G$ is isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we consider spectral characterization on the second largest distance eigenvalue $λ_{2}(D(G))$ of graphs, and prove that the graphs with $λ_{2}(D(G))\leq\frac{17-\sqrt{329}}{2}\approx-0.5692$ are determined by their $D$-spectra.

The Primitive Hole Number of Certain Graphs
A hole of a simple connected graph $G$ is a chordless cycle $C_n,$ where $n \in \Bbb N, n \geq 4,$ in the graph $G$. The girth of a simple connected graph $G$ is the smallest cycle in $G$, if any such cycle exists. It can be observed that all such smallest cycles are necessarily chordless. We call the cycle $C_3$ in a given graph $G$ a primitive hole of that graph. We introduce the notion of the primitive hole number of a graph as the number of primitive holes present in that graph. In this paper, we determine the primitive hole number of certain standard graphs. Also, we determine the primitive hole number of the underlying graph of a Jaco graph, $J^*_{n+1}(1),$ where $n \in \Bbb N, n \geq 4$ recursively in terms of the underlying Jaco graph $J_n(1)$, with prime Jaconian vertex $v_i$. The notion of primitive degree of the vertices of a graph is also introduced and the primitive degree of the vertices of certain graphs is also determined in this paper.

Competition Graphs of Jaco Graphs and the Introduction of the Grog Number of a Simple Connected Graph
Let $G^\rightarrow$ be a simple connected directed graph on $n \geq 2$ vertices and let $V^*$ be a non-empty subset of $V(G^\rightarrow)$ and denote the undirected subgraph induced by $V^*$ by, $\langle V^* \rangle.$ We show that the \emph{competition graph} of the Jaco graph $J_n(1), n \in \Bbb N, n \geq 5,$ denoted by $C(J_n(1))$ is given by:\\ \\ $C(J_n(1)) = \langle V^* \rangle_{V^* = \{v_i|3 \leq i \leq n-1\}} - \{v_iv_{m_i}| m_i = i + d^+_{J_n(1)}(v_i), 3 \leq i \leq n-2\} \cup \{v_1, v_2, v_n\}.$\\ \\ Further to the above, the concept of the \emph{grog number} $g(G^\rightarrow)$ of a simple connected directed graph $G^\rightarrow$ on $n \geq 2$ vertices as well as the general \emph{grog number} of the underlying graph $G$, will be introduced. The \emph{grog number} measures the efficiency of an \emph{optimal predator-prey strategy} if the simple directed graph models an ecological predator-prey web.\\ \\ We also pose four open problems for exploratory research.
A note on the Brush Numbers of Mycielski Graphs, $μ(G)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of the brush number $b_r(G)$ was introduced for a simple connected undirected graph $G$. The concept will be applied to the Mycielskian graph $μ(G)$ of a simple connected graph $G$ to find $b_r(μ(G))$ in terms of an \emph{optimal orientation} of $G$. We prove a surprisingly simple general result for simple connected graphs on $n \geq 2$ vertices namely: $b_r(μ(G))= b_r(μ^{\rightarrow}(G)) = 2\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}d^+_{G^{\rightarrow}_{b_r(G)}}(v_i).$
