Given a positive integer $n$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph (or $r$-graph for short) $F$, the Turan number $ex(n,F)$ of $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. The extension $H^F $ of $F$ is obtained as follows: For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ in $F$ not contained in an edge of $F$, we add a set $B_{ij}$ of $r-2$ new vertices and the edge $\{v_i,v_j\} \cup B_{ij}$, where the $B_{ij}$ 's are pairwise disjoint over all such pairs $\{i,j\}$. Let $K^r_p$ denote the complete $r$-graph on $p$ vertices. For all sufficiently large $n$, we determine the Turan numbers of the extensions of a $3$-uniform $t$-matching, a $3$-uniform linear star of size $t$, and a $4$-uniform linear star of size $t$, respectively. We also show that the unique extremal hypergraphs are balanced blowups of $K^3_{3t-1}, K^3_{2t}$, and $K^4_{3t}$, respectively. Our results generalize the recent result of Hefetz and Keevash [7].

A classical result of Erdős and Hajnal claims that for any integers $k, r, g \geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ with chromatic number at least $k$. This implies that there are sparse hypergraphs such that in any coloring of their vertices with at most $k-1$ colors there is a monochromatic hyperedge. We show that for any integers $r, g\geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ such that in any coloring of its vertices there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow (totally multicolored) edge. We give a probabilistic and a deterministic proof of this result.

Caro, West, and Yuster studied how $r$-uniform hypergraphs can be oriented in such a way that (generalizations of) indegree and outdegree are as close to each other as can be hoped. They conjectured an existence result of such orientations for sparse hypergraphs, of which we present a proof.

We study sparse hypergraphs which satisfy a mild pseudorandomness condition known as $L_p$ regularity. We prove appropriate regularity and counting lemmas, and we extend the relative removal lemma of Tao in this setting. This answers a question of Borgs, Chayes, Cohn and Zhao.

We consider some variants of the Gowers box norms, introduced by Hatami, and show their relevance in the context of sparse hypergraphs. Our main results are the following. Firstly, we prove a generalized von Neumann theorem for $L_p$ graphons. Secondly, we give natural examples of pseudorandom families, that is, sparse weighted uniform hypergraphs which satisfy relative versions of the counting and removal lemmas.

In this paper the problem of finding various spanning structures in random hypergraphs is studied. We notice that a general result of Riordan [Spanning subgraphs of random graphs, Combinatorics, Probability & Computing 9 (2000), no. 2, 125-148] can be adapted from random graphs to random $r$-uniform hypergaphs and provide sufficient conditions when a random $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ contains a given spanning structure a.a.s. We also discuss several spanning structures such as cube-hypergraphs, lattices, spheres and Hamilton cycles in hypergraphs.
Moreover, we study universality, i.e. when does an $r$-uniform hypergraph contain any hypergraph on $n$ vertices and with maximum vertex degree bounded by $Δ$? For $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ it is shown that this holds for $p= ω\left((\ln n/n)^{1/Δ}\right)$ a.a.s. by combining approaches taken by Dellamonica, Kohayakawa, Rödl and Ruciński [An improved upper bound on the density of universal random graphs, Random Structures Algorithms 46 (2015), no. 2, 274-299] and of Ferber, Nenadov and Peter [Universality of random graphs and rainbow embedding, Random Structures Algorithms, to appear]. Furthermore it is shown that the random graph $G(n,p)$ for appropriate $p$ and explicit constructions of universal graphs due to Alon, Capalbo, Kohayakawa, Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi and Alon and Capalbo yield constructions of universal hypergraphs that are sparser than the random hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ with $p= ω\left((\ln n/n)^{1/Δ}\right)$.

Fix $k \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$. Suppose that for each $l = 2, ..., k-1$, every set of l vertices of G is in at most $Δ^{(k-l)/(k-1)}/f$ edges. Then the chromatic number of $G$ is $O( (Δ/\log f)^{1/(k-1)})$. This extends results of Frieze and the second author and Bennett and Bohman. A similar result is proved for 3-uniform hypergraphs where every vertex lies in few triangles. This generalizes a result of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov, who proved the result for graphs.
Our main new technical contribution is a deviation inequality for positive random variables with expectation less than 1. This may be of independent interest and have further applications.

Let K_4 denote the complete 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices. Ajtai, Erdős, Komlós, and Szemerédi (1981) asked if there is a function ω(d) tending to infinity such that every 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph N vertices and average degree d has independence number at least ω(d) N/d^{1/2}. We answer this question by constructing a 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph with independence number at most 2N/d^{1/2}. We also provide counterexamples to several related conjectures and improve the lower bound of some hypergraph Ramsey numbers.

The use of tools from analysis to approach problems in graph theory has become an active area of research. Usually such methods are applied to problems involving dense graphs and hypergraphs; here we give the an extension of such methods to sparse but pseudorandom hypergraphs. We use this framework to give a proof of hypergraph removal for sub-hypergraphs of sparse random hypergraphs.

We develop a new technique that allows us to show in a unified way that many well-known combinatorial theorems, including Turán's theorem, Szemerédi's theorem and Ramsey's theorem, hold almost surely inside sparse random sets. For instance, we extend Turán's theorem to the random setting by showing that for every $ε> 0$ and every positive integer $t \geq 3$ there exists a constant $C$ such that, if $G$ is a random graph on $n$ vertices where each edge is chosen independently with probability at least $C n^{-2/(t+1)}$, then, with probability tending to $1$ as $n$ tends to infinity, every subgraph of $G$ with at least $(1 - \frac{1}{t-1} + ε) e(G)$ edges contains a copy of $K_t$. This is sharp up to the constant $C$. We also show how to prove sparse analogues of structural results, giving two main applications, a stability version of the random Turán theorem stated above and a sparse hypergraph removal lemma. Many similar results have recently been obtained independently in a different way by Schacht and by Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht.

A hypergraph G with n vertices and m hyperedges with d endpoints each is (k,l)-sparse if for all sub-hypergraphs G' on n' vertices and m' edges, m'\le kn'-l. For integers k and l satisfying 0\le l\le dk-1, this is known to be a linearly representable matroidal family.
Motivated by problems in rigidity theory, we give a new linear representation theorem for the (k,l)-sparse hypergraphs that is natural; i.e., the representing matrix captures the vertex-edge incidence structure of the underlying hypergraph G.

We give a short proof that any k-uniform hypergraph H on n vertices with bounded degree Δhas Ramsey number at most c(Δ, k)n, for an appropriate constant c(Δ, k). This result was recently proved by several authors, but those proofs are all based on applications of the hypergraph regularity method. Here we give a much simpler, self-contained proof which uses new techniques developed recently by the authors together with an argument of Kostochka and Rödl. Moreover, our method demonstrates that, for k \geq 4, c(Δ, k) \leq 2^{2^{\Ddots^{2^{c Δ}}}}, where the tower is of height k and the constant c depends on k. It significantly improves on the Ackermann-type upper bound that arises from the regularity proofs, and we present a construction which shows that, at least in certain cases, this bound is not far from best possible. Our methods also allows us to prove quite sharp results on the Ramsey number of hypergraphs with at most m edges.

A hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is $(k,\ell)$-sparse if no subset $V'\subset V$ spans more than $k|V'|-\ell$ hyperedges. We characterize $(k,\ell)$-sparse hypergraphs in terms of graph theoretic, matroidal and algorithmic properties. We extend several well-known theorems of Haas, Lov{á}sz, Nash-Williams, Tutte, and White and Whiteley, linking arboricity of graphs to certain counts on the number of edges. We also address the problem of finding lower-dimensional representations of sparse hypergraphs, and identify a critical behaviour in terms of the sparsity parameters $k$ and $\ell$. Our constructions extend the pebble games of Lee and Streinu from graphs to hypergraphs.
